    These episodes on this channel are expertly written and narrated. I find these so interesting and thoughtful. Plus, you talk about a show I love and makes me think how much people not into Star Trek are missing out on the story telling and underlying themes of these shows. Really well done! Thank you!

    And then the producers who worked on Voyager completely forgot about Mr Bates, and when it came to writing Chakotay, had a "Native American Expert" consultant... ...who was not a Native American, nor actually knew ANYTHING about Native American culture aside from New Age Claptrap.

    • @johnnyscifi
      @johnnyscifi 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I always thought Chakotay was mexican, or Navajo, or something...

    • @ZemplinTemplar
      @ZemplinTemplar 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah, it's sad. :( They couldn't even be consistent with what particular culture Chakotay was from. Or cultures, if we entertain the thought he might have had parents from multiple cultures or nationalities (certainly not an impossible option). A lot of what the individual writers threw around about Chakotay's ethnic origins didn't make sense on close inspection.
      (E.g. I've always been peeved by the fact he's hinted to have modern Maya ancestry on his father's side, but then in one episode, he claims that "his tribe never used bows". Fair enough, but that doesn't fit what we know about the Maya. They very much used bows in hunting and warfare. Additionally, the vague rituals Chakotay occassionally does is like some Hollywood reworking of southwestern and plains Indian iconography, but taken completely out of context. Chakotay's supposed origin is so confused and muddled, that it's not even silly, just annoyingly and wilfully confused.)

    Great work! Thanks for this video. I'm inspired by and in awe of Russell Bates.
    One of my favorite parts is what he says in the clip just after you're talking about how every writer is a world within themselves, and when a writer creates some of that inner world spills out. "Writing itself is a language that you learn the same as the language that you learn from you're parents. It obeys the same principles, but you're not writing IN a language, you're writing AS a language." Russell Bates

    I co-host an Animated Series and all things Trek in the 1970s podcast (Saturday Morning Trek) so I'm glad to see more and more people are getting interested in this often overlooked piece of Trek history. If not for TAS it's possible Trek would not be around today. Not only did it keep it alive in the public, but it also kept licensing fresh into the 70s!

    I fondly remember watching the Animated Series on Saturday afternoon's when first broadcast.
    The stories were good. The novelizations of them, Star Trek Log 1 - 10, were excellent, being greatly expanded upon versus the 23 minute episodes.

      I'm from Germany, and I read the books even before I got to watch the Animated Series in his full form, and I loved the books, especially Serpent's Tooth (which is one of my favorite episodes of ST) . Here in Germany, they butchered the 20 minutes long episodes into 15 minutes. (which was horrible). Later we got them full with a new dub. Sadly that TAS is so underrated.

    This is great channel.
    After finishing all the D&D Cartoon Episodes for nostalgia, I went to watch all the Animated Trek that I saw off-and-on as a kid. As I started re-watching as an adult, I realized this was not just a cartoon version of Star Trek for kids, it was actually the next and last season of old Trek (after its Live-action cancellation) -- before the Movies. Well go figure as it was made by Roddenberry with most of the original actors and some great writers.
    It was at times, almost as sophisticated as its predecessor. Now the half hour time-frame had some limitations that the original hour shows did not -- and am not saying every episode is amazing, but I would recommend everyone watch it who liked the old series, as it builds on previous episodes and fills in gaps of the whole Trek story -- just like fan-made You-Tube episodes.

      +Matt 07a Thank you for watching! Glad to have you here =)
      My approach is slightly academic. I have a background in biology and anthropology...and in that space, I've seen people do remarkable work with very little data and with subjects tiny in scope. I once attended this insane lecture on how the marketing and success vegetable shortening had unexpected impacts on the social reality of people in the United States. The researcher looked at Crisco and just helped to explain social struggle and painted a very vivid picture of life at the onset, and after the onset, of this one single cooking aid. It was extraordinary.
      My favorite thing about academia is that when you look deeper even at the tiniest thing, a whole world of understanding can approach. Star Trek is 50 years old this year...there is tons of stuff, intentional and unintentional, locked away in those stories. I find it interesting to peel back the layers to see what scurries out.

    I've only seen a few episodes of the animated series but I do remember that Larry Niven, the author of ringworld wrote an episode and it featured aliens from his books. It blew my mind to see the kzin in Star Trek and it was such an odd feeling seeing a cross over of two old sci fi franchises meet like that. To me, a kid in 2012 it was so random that an old sci book I loved and an old sci fi series I loved melded together.

    Bingewatching all videos on this channel right now - damn, how did I miss out on this for so long?
    Your videos are amongst the better documentaries here on youtube for sure. Not just, because I like the Trek and you dig out some interesting informations about the show.
    It's the general quality of the production, the research behind the episodes. You show no sign of what many other channels over time fallen to over the years: They raise the frequency of their releases on one side and then, of course, can't put as much work in individual episodes any more. And in the end many resort to "let's just record a bunch of guys talking unscripted about the topic for an hour" - less preparation, less post-production (if any) and usually average content at best.
    Stick with your model, guys! Good stuff!

    • @Trekspertise
      @Trekspertise  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you very much! It is a struggle with any size production, from TH-cam all the way up to your casual George Clooney film. How much time does one dedicate to crafting the best video or film experience vs. the need for audience size and regularity?
      We have been sporadic with our releases partly because it takes time to craft together something and, not to say that any of this is perfect (first videos are downright cringe-worthy) we are proud of many of the entries in this series as a result. The best ones, like this one ("The Serpent's Tooth"), take a lot of time and even some travel to make happen. But also, we have to take regular paying film and video gigs when we can, which also ruins a regular release schedule.
      But, you know...we are aiming to change this right now. With Patreon inching its way up to the $500 per video mark, we can promise a scaling up of production that won't diminish quality. So, look out for that real soon. We are planning on moving this channel into the broader category of sci-fi video essays, too, along with various Star Trek topics. And with Star Trek: Discovery around the corner, we are hoping to put out some weekly episode reviews.
      Thank you for swinging by to check this space out. In short, you ain't seen nothing yet. And be sure to check out Kyle's personal channel, too...same editing style, but with different topics: th-cam.com/users/kylesullivan

    • @commanderkruge
      @commanderkruge 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      "It is a struggle with any size production" - yah, I know. I did a few vids just for fun when I first came to youtube years ago - for shits and giggles and to see if this was my thing, and if nothing else that gave me some insight into how much work is involved in videos that aren't just unscripted vlogs. And honest respect for ppl who do that on a regular basis, this is actual work. :)
      "it takes time to craft together something" - and it shows that you TAKE the time you need and not rush things. Which is cool. Hence my comment. ^^ "we are proud of many of the entries" - And rightfully so. :)
      [more material in the future] - God, I love when crowdfunding works for people who make stuff I like. :D That doesn't sound bad at all. As for the broader category of future videos - great! There's loads of worlds to explore in scifi that are not Trek, and to me you've already shown that you like to find interesting angles to view the material from.
      I'm looking forward to it! Once again: Thanks for the great work you guys do and q'apla from Bonn, Germany! :)

      my favorite eps are when you do analysis eps, rather than behind the scenes eps. like the Gul Dukat one was my fave. and the History of the Borg.
      I'd like to see an episode where you review/contrast characters from the series. Like, who is the best doctor? Who is the best helmsman? Who is the best 1st officer and why is it Riker?

    Contrary to some, I do love the animated ST series and I also noticed how it influenced post STOS like STNG, STDS9 and STV. Obviously not when I first saw as a kid in the 70's but later on when I revisited the series. My only complaint with the series was the voice overs. There's a huge gap in histrionics between the voices of the original crew and most of the cartoon voice actors. The original crew voices give us a true performance while the cartoon voice actors down grade it to a simple kid's show gig, I totally get it but is the only thing I dislike of the STCS. In the other hand it totally shows how voice actors have evolved to a point that many have become popular in Their own and also how famous actors are more willing to "lend" their voices in animated films or series. Love this channel.

    Not that I knew much about him at all, but I didn't know Russell Bates was Native American ^_^
    As is mentioned, that's interesting because you didn't see much of any minorities in front of or behind the camera in any form at that time.
    I was around 10 when this show was on the air (Yep, I'm an Old Nerd ^_^), but I still recall to this day being SO excited that it was being broadcast! Even at that age, I never thought I would get to see NEW Star Trek ever again, and I still fondly recall all of the episodes, even the incredibly corny ones like "Infinite Vulcan" ^_^

      +Trekspertise Mirrors of the Federation and The Case for Gul Dukat.
      Because Dukat has always been part of my Holy Trinity of fav Trek characters Dukat/Garak/Picard. Mirrors because it introduced to your channel, plus the intro scene to it is is possible my fav scene in all of Trek.

      +Trekspertise Russell Bates here. First, because Kyle is into Native American studies, writerfella (me) was pleased to see he had that book with one of writerfella''s stories. Second, that was Kyle's library, not writerfella's. Third, freeze frame and look at the titles, and you then will get a better handle on who Kyle Sullivan is as a person. Sorry, Kyle, but a personal library reveals who YOU are! writerfella has 12,000 Sci-fi books. Good luck on finding who writerfella is!

    The animated series was the first Trek that I saw "live". Wish they had done more. In fact, wish they would continue an updated version set either in TOS or TOS movie era. It's a shame that Paramount did not make more movies with the original cast before they started to go where no man has gone before. Better make some more STNG movies before they begin to head off as well.

    • @Trekspertise

      +Rafay Siddiqui TAS is tough to swallow, admittedly. But the spirit of the show is very much the same as the original, and that is nice to watch.
      And thanks. The problem isn't ideas...I've got about LOADS of those. The problem is money. I have to stop Trekspertise in order to take work that will pay bills. If Patreon funded Trekspertise up to $500 a video, I can pay others to help produce these, and thus promise a minimum of two videos a month. Just gotta reach that level...

    As a kid, may have watched a few randoms eps, I remembered Serpents Tooth and the ep Yesteryear. It wasn't until I grew up and saw DVD box set being released of the original series and the TAS that I got the full series of TAS. Many of the episodes truly do stand up and should not be discounted. Thankfully they've been canonized. Well all except Robert April. Or has he?

    • @enterprisingcaptian875

    About giving credit to an outside influence to other cultures and the shoe on the other foot thing. Not only did no one make a big deal about it, but now we have the Ancient Alien theory. I also do not think racism was the reason they did not think the native populations built the structures, rather an observation based off what they saw of the people they met. They were proven wrong through evidence. Or as a good skeptic, sufficient evidence was presented to show that at one point they were able to build these structures. You do know not everything is racist or sexist. right?

    Also, I find it unfair that Native Americans aren't given credit for the civilization they built. That simply doesn't make any sense.

    • @Trekspertise
      @Trekspertise  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Trekkie NZ Thanks! I would do that every time, if I could.
      And yea...removing agency from Native America doesn't make a lot of sense to me either. But...it's a rich and lengthy tradition among colonial Europeans and their descendants. Ethnocentrism has real staying power, sometimes.

    • @lovedigenous4026
      @lovedigenous4026 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It makes perfect sense. It gives the USA the agency to go around the world and accuse others of genocide and human rights violations. Ignoring what the USA, Mexico and Canada has done to the Hemisphere in the past and currently is contingent on the erasure of Indigenous identity, land claim and accomplishments...such as corn, tobacco, turkeys, sunflowers, cotton, peanuts, rubber, quinine, taxol, aspirin and the US constitution.

    I think the animated series exists inside the star trek universe as a cartoon kids on earth watch, I imagine that in yhe star trek universe, kirk and crew would be well known among people everywhere, and people made a show based on their adventures, for the entertainment and education of children.
