- In Joker, Arthur Fleck falls in love with his neighbor, the down-on-her-luck single mother. Throughout the film, Sophie seems to be one of the only people who actually cares about him. So he’s devastated when he visits her apartment and realizes that their entire relationship has been a figment of his imagination. The film makes the aftermath of this revelation ambiguous, because we don’t find out what happens to his imaginary girlfriend afterwards in the Joker movie.

The fact that she says “you are so funny arthur” is a hint that she wasn’t really there the whole time because he never told her his name.

At least, it is clear that the scene of the kiss and the hospital are fake, because she didn't even know that his mother was in hospital /dead

I didn't know he was hallucinating but I did catch hints that didn't feel right. Like, her finding him likeable and funny, being appreciative of a killer joker. I found that weird because the film boasts of realism. And in the real world, no sensible (I repeat - sensible), single mother of a little child would get involved with a shady, loner person like Arthur. That is risky dating. And she would not approve of brutal murders!
That depends on the person. So that's not entirely true.
Single mothers do it so much in the USA that it's become a cliche.
they do get in risky behavior with other type of guys with al kinds of red flags (alcoholics, wife beater, etc. etc.). Thing is Arthur had all the loser/no girl friend tropes to him (broke, lives with his mother, loser, no friends, so its less belieavable a woman will want to be with him.
This actually got me during the film. As I was watching through I was like "Oh he seems to have found a love interest, good for him and she's taken a liking to him".
Then later it's revealed she just views him as the creepy stalker guy.
But let's be honest if you ever got involved with him as a woman you wouldn't dare rip him off in divorce.

Arthur said Gary was the only one that was nice to him, but Sophie was too. She made small talk with him in the elevator, laughed along with him talking about the building, and showed she cares about his well-being in the apartment, offering to call his mother and all. She didn't know his mother was in the hospital
If he actually made a move to try to talk to her he probably would of dated her she was clearly a single lonely mom and seem to atleast want to interact with him based on the elevator scene

The apartment scene was real
She just made a very small joke to a guy she met once in the elevator, the following the next day may be real but the rest wasn't. He was just a guy she made very short conversation with and just showed at her apartment one night, we dont even know if the Sophie the movie presented was the real her, because for most of it she was just an hallucination that said what Arthur wanted to hear almost every time

I don't think he killed her. When he goes back to his apartment and you hear the sirens I think it's because she phoned the police but because he hasn't 'done anything' he wasn't arrested or spoken to. They may have just advised her to call again if he does anything else unsettling etc

How did she die?
It always upset me how she never minded his dark humor that sometimes sounded like a threat and laughed like they were friends for so long. But she was an hallucination that only said what Arthur wanted to hear. I don't remember but I realized this in the hospital scene where she just magically left before Arthur lost himself in anger and killed his mother, the hallucination left when he was unstable. Also how her daughter was suddenly gone

Before the reveal, I thought she was an absolute weirdo. Being charmed by a stalker, and kissing him back when he just walks into her apartment and kisses her with blood still all over his face. (Which I LOVED, btw. That kiss was hot AF) But I kept asking myself, "What kind of woman is this?!" I was happy he found his soulmate....until we discover it never happened.

The first time I watched I didn’t notice this scene saying he was faking the relationship the whole time, it blew my mind when my friend told me on the car ride home

Whenever I feel sad that Joker didn’t actually have a girl who loved him, I remember that Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara are happily married with a kid. Not the same thing but close enough where it helps me chin up
Well Joker did have Harley but he abused her constantly and even tried to kill her once hence making her leave but i guess that if he was still a good guy when he met her he would probably treat her good

I immediately developed a crush on Zazie after watching this movie..
I kinda figured she was a hallucination when she started spending so much time with him at night and the daughter just completely stopped being a factor. Now it’s not farfetched to say she probably could have just had someone watch her or worst case the child just stayed home by herself. But her and the daughter did say the building is awful and honestly didn’t seem like she would be too trusting to leave her daughter in it by herself or trust her with anyone coming in or out of it.
this is so fucked. at first i thought things were genuinely going good for arthur and thought he was eventually going to mess things up as normal in movies where things go TOO well. when he went into her apartment i thought that was that moment. maybe he was going to hurt her or something but to find out he imagined the whole thing just destroyed me. this movie is so sad and amazing all at the same time

This is creepy as hell. Of course you sympathize with the joker because he is the protagonist, but why the hell would anybody get on with his/her stalker.

Pity that it was mostly just his imagination, I initially had the feeling she could save him from his fate.
Another hint it’s not real is that when she goes to get the coffee in the hospital scene she never comes back
This is hard to watch, knowing what's really going through his head.
This was a really sad part of the movie, once you find out it was all a hallucination to Arthur. Sophie was the only person who kept Arthur from snapping, and once he realized she wasn’t ever his girlfriend in the first place, he couldn’t take it anymore.

The twist with her would mean so much more if she actually had more to do in the movie than just exist. At face value it's a big deal, but on a deeper level it really reduces her to absolutely nothing. A real waste of a great actor, she can do extremely well.

On the flip side in makes her more effective as it emphasizes the fact that she was almost nothing in Arthur's life, just some woman he briefly met in an elevator and hallucinated a relationship with, nothing more. She's intentionally given little to do.

The only nice thing she ever did for Arthur was loving and accepting him as a person. (In Arthur's head that was nice.) But the real one society respects is the one that never approuch Arthur with anything that didn't show humanity. The only humanity I saw was in Arthur's head that tried to believe in people. And audiences say Arthur has negative thoughts in his head. It's not in his head, it's the real world that is negative and what he sees is neglectful and harsh, not becouse bad people, but becouse good people of its representation of sociaty which is protected and assumed is not suitable or capable of communicating or cohesive understanding of anther person.

I had a bit of an off feeling. But then, there have been odder couples. It’s just so sad though when that feeling of too good to be true turned out to be real.
I somehow knew that all their interactions are illusion after a while. It was just weird, at every situation she always said everything he would want to hear. It was especially significant in the scene where she comments the murders. Also she liked his humor which let's be honest, was not really funny most of time. In a nutshell, she was too perfect. Almost like an imaginary friend he would make up rather than real person.

I think the movie makes it very clear that Arthur is a virgin, he never had sex, he never had a girlfriend, and he doesn't know how to relate to women. There are many signs and it is very virginal to fall in love with a woman you saw in the elevator just because she treated you nicely and nothing more. Furthermore, she does not seem to understand sexual jokes and is probably very embarrassed to approach a woman.
