Used to watch these classic matches on the Golf Channel in the 90's. It's so much easier to relate to these old golf swings than the new robo-golfers with their perfect swings on the PGA tour nowadays. Caddies chain smoking, it was a different world back then!
My dad was the chef for Pauma Valley Country club from 72 to early 73. Lived near the bottom of Cole Grade Road,my dad played this course many times,always said it was the best he ever played!
I remember the irons we had in the sixties and how hard it was to hit the ball squarely. I went with Lynx in 1973 and right away the game became much easier. Same with persimmon woods. You needed to hit the ball 'on the screws' to get any distance. Metal 'woods' made it much easier. The courses today are longer and harder though to make up for the clubs.
Golf was much more of an art back then. Minimal technology. Wood drivers, metal shafts, and blades. The golf swings back then seemed to have much more character, much less cookie cutter than now. Golf instruction was also less technical (no cameras, no swing and position tracers etc); you had a few fundamentals, and that was pretty much it. It was then up to you to figure out how to hit the ball consistently. In a lot of ways (excluding the technology aspect), watching old golf matches is more relatable than the modern PGA tour. I mean, how many of us are driving the ball 340 yards, or hitting an 8 iron 200 yards.
The ball is the pacing item for distance when comparing different eras. In each era, rest assured the pro's hit the ball as far as they can/could. Today's golf balls are very consistent and high tech. These oldies uses to cut easy and get out of round frequently. I remember guys carrying a ring to pass the ball thru as an out of round check!
What was the date of this match? I remember watching these in the early 60s and really enjoyed them as a young boy. Notice how short the ball went in those days!
Times have changed. 465 yard par 4 , drive and 4 iron (Palmer). Today, likely a drive and short iron .. maybe a wedge for the longest hitters. But, where is the challenge in that?
Actually the commentator said about Arnold "Last year Arnold became the first player to exceed $100K in winnings". So that would make the date either late 1963 (after the official tour closed) or early 1964. 1963 - Arnold Palmer, $128,230 1962 - Arnold Palmer, $81,448.33
Never have seen golf show from this era where the driving distance wasn't anything special, even when they swung out of their shoes, fairways look longish not much roll, it looks like a warm day don't see big wind, doesn't take much of a miss on the old drivers, irons were worse
a totally different game in 1963 than it is in 2018! The tee shots are at least 75 yards shorter and you may hit a 4 iron 170 yards. Now a drive is 310 by the big boys and a 4 iron is 210. And the course looks like crap. nothing like today. Now he players have to take the friggin glove off and on, off and on, and fold it nicely and put it in their back pocket over and over and over. It gets on my nerves. todays players are candy asses. they don't smoke, or look at the girls and probably never have a beer or shoot a game of pool. candy asses - all of them. fuck golf
Just because one abstains from tobacco and alcohol does not mean that he/she is a candy ass. As a matter of fact, they are doing their life a big favor (provided they are not consuming PEDs).
No technology had it right. Every drive plus 300 means courses have to be absurdly long. Jack's distance is documented, it's not some myth, virtually is whole career is on film.
I am a member at Pauma Valley now and there are so many differences mostly the houses. I am surprised they didn't mention John Wayne's house that sits off of the 14th fairway. This property was John Wayne's Ranch. This is one of the best courses in all of Southern California. Difficult but fair. Straight forward

This course is very tough with modern equipment let alone persimmon woods and old balls.

agronomie has changed. todays boys get 80 yards of roll sometimes.

Either the fairways didn't roll out or what. I know the irons back then in loft were weaker. 5 iron loft kinda was like 7 iron now.
