If hard starting be sure to include a high concentration in the tank. Hard starting is more likely a fuel gum restriction in the carburetor (or fuel filter), so need to treat through the fuel. Intake treatments into a carburetor throat go right to the intake valves and chamber so won't clean the carburetor (fuel passageways).
My 91 Yugo GV has been having issues with running rich and the carb getting clogged up, thanks for the tutorial hopefully I can get the little thing to run a little more smoothly.
Make sure you treat the fuel to clean the carburetor by adding a couple cans of Sea Foam or High Mileage to a low tank of fuel (greater cleaning concentration). Some people mistakenly think treating the carburetor throat cleans the carburetor - treating the carburetor throat cleans the intake valves and chamber areas, which are after the fuel passes through the carburetor circuits. Hope this helps! 🙂

Hi Ed: Thanks for the post and question. Glad to hear! Yes, you can never use too much Sea Foam or use too often. However, for any auto or truck driven regularly - we recommend a treatment every 2,000 to 5,000 miles in a daily driver vehicle. For any fuel can or tank fuel that may sit for more than 3 weeks, add to every can/tank.
Nice video. On a Quadrajet, should I spray into the tube located in front of the primaries or the one in front of the secondaries, or both? I think they are fuel bowl vent tubes. Also, can I also directly spray it into the chambers (primary & secondaries?). Thanks!

Thanks for reply... I do have both and have added it to the fuel already but she has a rough idle so wanted to see if the spray would help?. Does it still apply to add the full can meaning quarter can per carb and shutting it off for 15min and starting her up again. Thanks
For diagnosing a rough idle, hesitation/loss of power.. with anything carburetor related, use Sea Foam Motor Treatment in the fuel tank. Add a full can or two when the tanks is low (a gallon), then just run it to get the Sea Foam mix into your carburetors. Every time you leave it sit the Sea Foam will be working to dissolve soft gum and varnish residues from the carb circuits. Sea Foam Spray is intended for high concentration chamber cleaning (intake valves, chamber areas, compression rings). Hope this helps!
Hey Brian, I would like to use the seafoam spray on my motorcycle. it is a 4 stroke so my question would be do I spray each carb individually then shut it off and "hot soak" or just spray around in the intake filter housing. Thanks
You can do the sequence individually or try to do in sequence. Doing one at a time works well if you aren't in a hurry. And, make certain the spray straw is placed in the carburetor throat in front of the throttle valve. Keep in mind that air intake treatment cleans the chamber area while Sea Foam in fuel cleans the carburetors. For cleaning carburetors, just add a high dosage into your tank fuel and ride as usual.
No, air intake cleaning does not pass through the carburetor. It goes into the carburetor throat, but at that point the fuel has already passed through the carburetor circuits. Adding to fuel tank cleans the carburetor. Hope this helps!
Out of complete curiosity, you stated in the video that “ 2 or more ounces per gallon” what if I were to put 128 ounces in my 38 gallon tank? Is that too much? P.s. it’s an old truck with smoke stacks so smoke isn’t an issue
That would not be too much BUT you'd get 4 times the cleaning concentration if you add 4 cans to 5 gallons. Pay half the cost and quadruple the cleaning effect. Additionally, you still have half a gallon remaining to use later.
Question, just got my car out of the body shop after 3 years…. The motor compartment was caked with body shop dust. If I spray the outside of the carburetor to clean off the dust, will it damage the new paint on the fender wells and motor? Thanks
I've had rough idling in my 73 comet and I replaced the fuel filter and added seafoam to the gas tank, but it was still sputtering and dying I'm going to spray the carb today to see if it does the trick, if it works, you're a life saver, I'll keep you posted.
Hi Alvin: To overcome idle trouble, don't be afraid to add 2 or 3 cans to a low tank of fuel (and run it!) to clean the carburetor circuits. Sea Foam Spray into the carburetor throat will help clean the intake valves/upper engine.
@@SeaFoamOfficial Man, I sprayed the carb throat with seafoam, saw all the white smoke which indicated that it was doing what it was suppose to do, and it felt like it was wanting to continue idling but it sputtered and kept backfiring loud, so adding more seafoam to the gas tank will do the trick you think? Just don't want to get it towed to the mechanic just yet, been thinking about replacing the carburetor as well, seen some videos on here and doesn't look too complicated, I've only dumped one can in the gas tank, so u think more will help it? Due to it sputtering and not giving me enough time to keep it idling while I spray the throat, I could only do it while the engine wasn't hot, you think that's a factor? Thanks for responding too man, I want to drive this awesome car already!
Hi Alvin - 2 things going on: 1) When you apply Sea Foam Spray into a carburetor throat the engine needs to be running at least 1,500 to 2,000 RPM or you'll drown out the intake and foul the plugs. (Be sure to read can instructions.) 2) Adding something to the carburetor throat does not pass through the carburetor. When you spray into the throat (air intake) the liquid goes right to the intake runners and into the chambers. You need to add Sea Foam to the fuel to clean through the carburetor jets, etc.
Hi Hannah: Thanks for the question. We hear a lot of things about what to do and not do. Not sure where some of the ideas come from. Note: A Sea Foam Spray treatment works through a gas engine's top end to clean air intake areas, intake valve and upper chamber areas. Sea Foam Spray has nothing to do with motor oil.
Hi Sea Foam Official can i use sea foam on my 1990 4.2.l jeep wrangler YJ I'm having bogging issues. if I give it time and take off slow i have no issue but if i try to floor it it boggs on me and dies.
Hello! My 81 Fiat 127 make a very bad noise, it's doing clicky sounds like a diesel but it wasn't doing that before, but I'm using 95 octane but it's recommanded to use Super 98 octane, putting this in the tank AND cleaning the carburetor with the nozzle bottle will help cleaning and maybe having a smoother engine? Have a nice day and happy new year!
Thanks - HNY to you, too! Is the clicky sound a lifter (oil crankcase), or engine knock/pings (combustion chamber)? If lifter noise, try adding a half a can of Sea Foam to your oil for the remainder of the oil interval. If a knock, do Sea Foam Spray treatments just as this video shows. Better yet, do both!
@@SeaFoamOfficial Thanks! Okay, I will try to do both, I've seen the TH-camr "Project Farm" doing that with seafoam and his engine was very very silent after that, I hope it will work good! Do you know where I can buy Seafoam in Belgium?

Does it matter if you put the gas treatment in at another time or is there a special benefit to doing them both together at the same time as opposed to say spraying the carburetor one day and another day putting the treatment into the gas tank? I sprayed my boat's carberator this past weekend but didn't have enough gas treatment to put into the gas tank at the time so I'll have to do that separately at some other time so is it important when I do this or after how long to wait? I already had treated the gas that was already in my tank with Marine Stabil. If I use Seafoam in the gas tank in the future then do I still need to use Marine Stabli? Does Marine Stabil & Seafoam have any consequences if they are combined together in the gas tank?
i would be very very careful with spraying using the straw, those things always shoot out. Last thing you want is for it to shoot into the carb with the carb running.
My 429 engine on 66 is having some excessive blue smoke, mechanic said it’s the rings? Would this help? And maybe putting some thicker oil? Thank a bunch
Okay, so I have a 1995 Nissan Hardbody. It has a carbureted KA24E 4 banger. It starts, but it won’t idle. I have to keep the gas partially applied to keep the engine from stalling out. I was told to try seafoam, but I’m not sure how it would react. Do you guys recommend it? And how should I do it on my engine since it doesn’t like to idle?
Hi Seafoam. Just got 83 caprice that’s been sitting for years. (Sharp car and runs) Should I use this method before or after I change fuel filter & plugs?
@@SeaFoamOfficial I ran sea foam thru before the plug and filter change. Purely cleaning out the gas lines and carb. I’ve changed the plugs afterwards and plan on running Sea foam again after a few miles and another oil change. So ya, before and after. So far so great! Thanks. … and the issue was just the car was sitting for years. Sea foam seemed to help clear old gas/sludge from the carb and lines up. I’ll be using it a few more times before she is tuned.
The car is a 61 thunderbird that was parked in a dry barn since 1974 I just recently got started after changing the gas tank, the fuel pump and rebuilding the carburetor but now thats running, but the oil light came on and you can hear it missing along with some smoke coming out the oil fill cap I suspect is a stuck valve.
I have a 1985 3.0L Mercruiser. I have issues cold starting when priming with throttle. Could adding Seafoam to fuel tank and carb intake possibly solve my issue?
Yes, try high concentrations in fuel (add to low tank or use 'can & hose'), Sea Foam Spray into throat will help clean upper engine (but does not pass through the carburetor circuits).
No, you need to reach the float by adding Sea Foam to fuel. The float is in the carburetor and Sea Foam Spray is applied into the carburetor throat - the video showing the spray going into the carburetor throat, so applied in the air intake stream AFTER fuel has passed through the carburetor. Sea Foam Motor Treatment in fuel will dissolve varnish that causes a float to stick. The higher the concentration the better so add a can or 2 when the tank is very low...run the engine at least 10 minutes...shut off and let Sea Foam soak in the carburetor circuits for a couple days. Let us know what happens.
My 305 Chevy engine starts after pumping my carb about 6x's and then it high idles for about 3 minutes would this sea foam help my car? Any help would be appreciated...Thanks!!!
Add at least 2 can of Sea Foam High Mileage to a low tank of fuel + apply a full can of Sea Foam Spray into the carburetor throat. Understand that Sea Foam in the fuel tank cleans the carburetor while Sea Foam Spray into the throat cleans the intake valves and chamber areas. Let us know what happens!
Hot Soak has to do with engine heat. If you wait too long the engine is no longer hot when you start it back up. No harm to cool down, but can foul plugs. Smoke is not relevant.
Adding to a low tank is a higher cleaning concentration than adding to more fuel. You can't add too much, and the more you add, the better it works to clean. Hope this helps!
I added your motor treatment to my gas tank & let it idle for 10 minutes, but no white smoke. (I also waited a day after I added the Seafoam) Am I doing it right?
Hi Thomas: Adding Sea Foam to fuel will not produce a lubricant vapor emission. All that excitement has to do with a straight application into the engine's top end.
Thanks for using Sea Foam! Please let us know if there's anything we can help with. For what it's worth, Sea Foam Spray into a carburetor through or fuel injection throttle body is the high concentration treatment you're looking for.
I just picked up a 1985 Honda Magna V45 VF700cc. Taking all four carburetors apart looks like a nightmare and I'm not "Johnny spin a wrench", so I'm going to spray the hell out of the carburetors with Sea Foam and add it to the gas tank and keep my fingers crossed. Anybody try this on their bike? How did it work out? Thanks for any feed-back. Eric
Eric: Add a bunch of Sea Foam Motor Treatment to your tank gas to clean the carburetors. Note that Sea Foam Spray into the carburetor throat does not clean the carburetors, the carb throat directs air and aspirated gasoline into the air intake runners (after fuel has passed through the carburetors). Hope this helps!
Hopefully someone can answer--my motorcycle runs a little rough. Would seafoam help with that? I can't take off the gas tank and spray it into the carb. Would it work to spray it into the air filter, like starting fluid?
Hi Michael: For a carburetor, just add a half or full can to the tank...run the engine for 8 or so minutes to get the mixture into the carburetor circuits...shut off and let sit for a day...run it to warm up and take if for a ride. Carburetors are vented to the atmosphere and form heavier, sticky gum/varnish in the passageways...Sea Foam works fast to liquefy the heavier fuel residue/clears out the circuits.
I once had a VW bug that idled very rough in cold weather. I added this to the tank the night before and drove for a bit. The next morning it idled flawlessly. This stuff is magic in a can.

Man, I sprayed the carb throat with seafoam, saw all the white smoke which indicated that it was doing what it was suppose to do, and it felt like it was wanting to continue idling but it sputtered and kept backfiring loud, so adding more seafoam to the gas tank will do the trick you think? Just don't want to get it towed to the mechanic just yet, been thinking about replacing the carburetor as well, seen some videos on here and doesn't look too complicated, I've only dumped one can in the gas tank, so u think more will help it? Due to it sputtering and not giving me enough time to keep it idling while I spray the throat, I could only do it while the engine wasn't hot, you think that's a factor? Thanks for responding too man, I want to drive this awesome car already!
Hi Alvin - 2 things going on:
1) When you apply Sea Foam Spray into a carburetor throat the engine needs to be running at least 1,500 to 2,000 RPM or you'll drown out the intake and foul the plugs. (Be sure to read can instructions.)
2) Adding something to the carburetor throat does not pass through the carburetor. When you spray into the throat (air intake) the liquid goes right to the intake runners and into the chambers. You need to add Sea Foam to the fuel to clean through the carburetor jets, etc.
How much seafoam should you pour into the gas tank without knowing how much fuel(inaccurate fuel gauge reading) is in there ?
As long as you have half a gallon of fuel, the whole can is always best for creating a higher cleaning concentration. Hope that helps!
@@SeaFoamOfficial ok Thanks
Will this also help with all that bad smoke smell that the carburetor lets out through the exhaust
Not sure what you mean cuz the carburetor and tailpipe are at opposite ends.
@@SeaFoamOfficial I know
Great video!
Great video. can this procedure be done on a inboard boat ?
Has Same engine
Yes, can do the same procedure with the boat on water.
Why does everybody tell me to change my oil afterwords then?
Hi Hannah: Thanks for the question. We hear a lot of things about what to do and not do. Not sure where some of the ideas come from. Note: A Sea Foam Spray treatment works through a gas engine's top end to clean air intake areas, intake valve and upper chamber areas. Sea Foam Spray has nothing to do with motor oil.
Will this also help clean the fuel pump ?
It may, adds lubrication.
Hi Sea Foam Official can i use sea foam on my 1990 4.2.l jeep wrangler YJ I'm having bogging issues. if I give it time and take off slow i have no issue but if i try to floor it it boggs on me and dies.
Yes, try it and let us know what happens. Make sure you include a cleaning concentration of Sea Foam in fuel to clean the fuel passageways.
@@sheppardpat47 Let us know what happens. Sorry, no idea on getting Sea Foam in Belgium.
@@SeaFoamOfficial I hope I can find it on Amazon but it's a bit expensive, but I don't care since it's quality 😁
It's three times the price than in the US, I will get my car in one month max I think!
My arm is pretty near ready to fall off holding the damn throttle for four minutes
Hahahaha I felt this

1. Don't have to use at the same time but helps. 2. Can mix/combine in fuel. No worries!
i would be very very careful with spraying using the straw, those things always shoot out. Last thing you want is for it to shoot into the carb with the carb running.
Great point, Raymund. We agree!
Can I use regular seafoam not spray in air intake?
Yes, in a carburetor intake. Be sure to pour slowly. Note that adding liquid does not disburse as evenly as spray.
Newaz Sharif yes u can use seafoam in the intake
My 429 engine on 66 is having some excessive blue smoke, mechanic said it’s the rings? Would this help? And maybe putting some thicker oil? Thank a bunch
Is it blue smoke at start up?
Okay, so I have a 1995 Nissan Hardbody. It has a carbureted KA24E 4 banger. It starts, but it won’t idle. I have to keep the gas partially applied to keep the engine from stalling out. I was told to try seafoam, but I’m not sure how it would react. Do you guys recommend it? And how should I do it on my engine since it doesn’t like to idle?
Sea Foam and Sea Foam Spray will only help, just like the video shows. How old is your fuel filter?
So I just add to gas tank, warm up, turn off, drop a can inside the carb, turn her on. Drive ? And the sea foam will just evaporate?
Spray a can into the carburetor throat, yes. No, Sea Foam does not evaporate.
Hi Seafoam. Just got 83 caprice that’s been sitting for years. (Sharp car and runs) Should I use this method before or after I change fuel filter & plugs?
Hi Ryan. There is no concern with fuel filter or spark plugs so makes no difference. Let us know how it goes!
@@SeaFoamOfficial Thanks Seafoam! I will
@@SeaFoamOfficial it went great Sea Foam! Runs smooth as can be. Thank you
@@Ry77x Great! What did you end up doing? What was the issue?
@@SeaFoamOfficial I ran sea foam thru before the plug and filter change. Purely cleaning out the gas lines and carb. I’ve changed the plugs afterwards and plan on running Sea foam again after a few miles and another oil change. So ya, before and after. So far so great! Thanks. … and the issue was just the car was sitting for years. Sea foam seemed to help clear old gas/sludge from the carb and lines up. I’ll be using it a few more times before she is tuned.
How does this work on a car that's been sitting for 4 years?
Can't think of a better way to get things going again.
Do you think this stuff would help unstick a Valve in a car that’s been sitting for years?
Intake valve? Depends on how stuck/why it's sticking.
@@craigmoon4641 Yes, if you can get the fluid around the top of the valve and let it soak for a few days.
And that alls you need?
I have a 1984 F2 50 with the 351 Windsor in it I'm pretty sure the float is sticking in the car will this help
Is a 1000 RPM over idle best ?
Likely if it's over 2000 RPM's, the sea foam will be sucked in too rapidly to effectively do it's job...
Good question. Holding at 1500 to 2000 RPM is ideal.
My 305 Chevy engine starts after pumping my carb about 6x's and then it high idles for about 3 minutes would this sea foam help my car? Any help would be appreciated...Thanks!!!
Try what's showing in the video and let us know what happens!
If needing to pump 6 times your fuel might be flowing back to the tank too quick (overnight, etc).
I have an 89 Camaro, 305 tbi, and the idle shows that my carburetor is super dirty. Will this work on it?
Add at least 2 can of Sea Foam High Mileage to a low tank of fuel + apply a full can of Sea Foam Spray into the carburetor throat. Understand that Sea Foam in the fuel tank cleans the carburetor while Sea Foam Spray into the throat cleans the intake valves and chamber areas. Let us know what happens!
What happens if I let it hot soak for two hours? I had to run an errand and when I came back and drove it there was no smoke, 1975 c10
Hot Soak has to do with engine heat. If you wait too long the engine is no longer hot when you start it back up. No harm to cool down, but can foul plugs. Smoke is not relevant.
This wouldn’t cause any issues running through a supercharged carbureted engine would it?
Would not. It goes right into the carburetor throat to clean intake valves and chamber, then done and pushed out exhaust valves.
Just went to try on my Tesla, but I can't find the gas cap. Someone please help!
When spraying directly into carb and dumping in gas tank do I need to change oil afterwards???
No, not related. You can also add it to your oil.
What do i do if my truck will turn on but turns off wheni let off gas? Hard idol. 1984 f-150
Start with looking at fuel filter.
I have a 77 delta do I put the sea foam in the tank after the gas or before I put gas in the car?
Adding to a low tank is a higher cleaning concentration than adding to more fuel. You can't add too much, and the more you add, the better it works to clean. Hope this helps!
I added your motor treatment to my gas tank & let it idle for 10 minutes, but no white smoke. (I also waited a day after I added the Seafoam) Am I doing it right?
Hi Thomas: Adding Sea Foam to fuel will not produce a lubricant vapor emission. All that excitement has to do with a straight application into the engine's top end.
Thanks!
Thanks for using Sea Foam! Please let us know if there's anything we can help with. For what it's worth, Sea Foam Spray into a carburetor through or fuel injection throttle body is the high concentration treatment you're looking for.
Sea Foam Official I sprayed about 3/4 of the can when I had to stop for family matters. Will the Seafoam be just as effective without a full can?
Three quarters effective, which is far better than zero quarters... Nice going. Can always do more later!
Nice Car!!
I have a 93 gmc 5.7 carb. engine, would it be safe to pour the sea foam into the brake booster line?
We do not recommend - Sea Foam Spray works much better, safer!
whats the best way to free up an accelerator pump in the carb
How old is it? Reason I ask is if pre-ethanol era, rubber material (seals) will harden easily.
Sea Foam Official 1966 Pontiac parisienene
@@FirstGendodgegarage My hunch is the rubber/seal is no good.
Dumb question. Would this work for a 1984 Pontiac G6?
Yes, any gas or diesel engine!
Is there a lot of smoke or will my neighbors not notice it?
Not a big deal. Sometimes more (visible vapor), sometimes less.
Can anyone give me a clue what kind carb should I get for my 305 gmc motor 1980 and pump
Dont .just rebuild the one on it.buying a new 2 barrel is pointless. & putting a 4 barrel on it would just cause problems using the stock cam.
How do you treat a car with 2 carburetors (I own a Chevy Corvair with dual carbs)?
Half the can per carburetor throat or a can each. Just make sure each throat is treated evenly. Hope this helps!
