  • After picking up a Royal Enfield Classic 500 for an upcoming day trip, we rode over to a Balinese home that's been converted into a little coffee and tea spot. The owner's a motorcycle fan and has a classic Vespa and Honda S90.

I love my 2018 Royal Enfield Classic 500 in chrome green. I really love it. I bought a Bonneville T120 Black Gold Line for longer, faster rides, but I just couldn't bear to give up my RE. Now I use the RE for shorter, local, country rides and it makes me grin like nothing else. You're right; it's awful on motorways and for all-day riding - you lose feeling in your fingers and toes from the vibrations, but for country lanes there's just nothing like it. I hope I have it forever.
Edit: Just seen the end when you're trying to kick start it. You 're squeezing the clutch in, so it's never going to work. Ignition on, in neutral, leave the clutch alone. Kick it gently, no effort, once or twice until you feel it 'bite' then a good, confident kick down and it'll start first time. Maybe second time. ;)

Great Video guy’s & brilliant to see the Royal Enfield 500 in its Natural environment, the rust issues pointed out I think is more to do with lack of care especially in a country like Bali what with its damp & humid weather my pals 10yr old Bullet is mint tho he is nuts about keeping it that way & why not! Your right about the ‘Royal Enfield’ & the nostalgia it seems to bring to oneself there’s something about it that nobody can put into words yet they can somehow’feel it’ I don’t think any other motorcycle company can do that? Freddy, for gods sake man don’t hold the clutch in when you are trying to kickstart a motorcycle, the process is, ignition on, gearbox in neutral, slowly bring the engine to top dead centre (that’s where the most resistance is) once there give it a little bit of throttle then one swift kick should do the trick, if it does not start repeat the process, practice makes Perfect.

Hello Freddy,I had a Bullet 500 efi on a 2017 reg. It was a euro 3 bike which still had a drum brake rear wheel. Great bike, cruised along comfortably at 50 with the long stoke thump of the exhaust note and lots of people would come over and chat whenever I stopped. Usually older guys who used to ride Enfield’s but I was once followed and flagged down by an Indian couple, the husband used to ride one in India and didn’t know they were imported into the U.K. the new 350 models are great, the Meteor, Hunter and Classic and are superb value for money bikes.

I've got HG Wells, my Classic 500. I've commented about him before. A bike to be cherished but not put on a pedestal. It needs ridden regularly, just to keep that smile on your face.
I use mine on all roads without any issue, however it really makes sense on flowing single-track up a beautiful Highland glen. It won't win any races, just hearts. I'm looking to buy a 650 Super Meteor to replace a Benelli I bought new last year. The 500's staying though.
What you're feeling is nostalgia for a time when the world wasn't so frantic. The 500 takes you there, in some style.
Keep up the vlogs Freddie, you're a natural at this.

It is all about a simpler slower pace....a return to slow analog in a digital world. It is perfect for that and puts a smile on my face when I ride it. I have more modern bikes too but it never ceases to make me smile. But, what were those shenanigans with the kickstart? You had the clutch in and weren't turning the engine over at all. As a recent convert to Royal Enfield, it is the feel and the character of their bikes. Horsepower doesn't matter because it feels good? I had similar feelings from old Yamaha XS 650s, of which I have had 4. And I always loved the kickstart on them. Sorry Freddie 😂

The little Honda reminds me of my first bike; a 60cc Bridgestone from the 60s. I'm amazed at what appear to be raised, poured concrete roadways in Bali! My first bikes had kick starters. You had 2 options; kick start or bump starting (if you had a small hill). I had a kickstart Yamaha RD400C...took 2 kicks at most. If you get a chance to ride an RD400, go for it!

If you can, get your hands on the upswept silencer/exhaust end can that RE used to make. I have the 2018 Stealth Black 500 with the upswept silencer and I love it to bits. Toured the breadth of India on it. The torque this generates is so enjoyable. Yes it vibrates, a LOT and top speed is a joke but this is one bike that makes me want to slow down and enjoy the riding while soaking in all the beauty around. And at 80-90 kmph it is absolutely effortless. It's got oodles of "character". One of those bikes which you either love or hate, no middle ground.
I have removed the rear seat and that makes the bike look even more fantastic. I will keep it for a long time to come.

My CB450 K5 Honda is 51 years old, starts on the button or kickstart and has no rust at all and the build quality is first class.
Lovely scenery once again both and loved the coffee shop, not sure about the Royal Enfield to be honest but it was entertaining watching you kicking it over, ever tried kicking over a Suzuki RE5 rotary, virtually impossible for many.

Great video. A bit harsh on the Classic 500. Given the bleaching of the kill switch, this bike has spent most of its five years outside in the elements and it still looks great! As for the 'All New 350' being better? Well, I'd agree if you were talking about 1990's Bullets but the post 2008 one's with the unit construction engine are a totally different kettle of fish. They are also over 30 percent more powerful than the new 350, both in torque and BHP. They have hydraulic tappets, so no expensive 'tank off' servicing, unlike the new 350. The Classic 500 has glass and polished metal instrument dials, unlike the new 350, which are plastic and chromed plastic. The post 2008 Classic 500 has a fit and finish every bit as good as the all new 350 and my kick start works every time. Especially when the ignition is fully switched on 😉

All good points, I have a 2018 classic 500 from new, I have gone up a tooth on the gearbox sprocket and changed the exhaust system, it pulls like buggery and will do 85 mph without a problem before the rev limiter cuts in, and when the battery died I could still start and ride it, on the Kickstarter!

The kickstarter is connected to the gearbox, so if you pull in the clutch you won't be able to turn over the engine. Also, these bikes have a killswitch on the side stand, so you can only get them started with the side stand up.

I read a review one Sunday morning in 2018 for the Royal Enfield Classic 500 Pegasus Edition (commemorating the Flying Flea), I had no major interest in motorcycles never mind an intention to buy one, but in that moment I feel in love. I placed a order with the local dealer on a newly acquired credit card and took delivery some time later. I hadn’t even taken CBT. It’s such a character, I feel like Indiana Jones whenever I’m heading out 😂 It does thump along but it’s so much fun and I can’t think of a better way to get to work or take a trip out and through the West coast of Scotland. Onwards!

Kick starting a 4 stroke single. 1. Push kick start until you hit compression, ie the kick start is hard to move. 2. Lift kick start to it's highest point. 3. Whilst gently pushing pull the decompression lever until the piston moves over top dead center. The kick start will only move a couple of inches. (50mm) LET GO OF THE DECOMPRESSION LEVER! If not the engine will just spin over easily and never get enough compression to fire... 4. Lift kick start again to the top. 5. You are now ready to kick the bike over. 6. Do not "stab" the kick start as you would a 2 stroke, you want a long fast push downward. Do not straighten or over extend your leg because a backfire may damage your foot or knee... I wish you well in your learning curve...

  • @philroberts5537

Hi . A kick start works by spinning the gearbox which turns the engine. Pulling the clutch, as you'll know disconnects the gearbox from the engine so you are not turning it over. Obviously decompresor will also stop compression so it won't start.
If you like the classic bullet you really should try the old iron head engine bullets. I've written both , believe me the iron head makes the more modern classic seem very bland like most small Japanese bikes compared to a proper British ,albeit made in India , bike.

    Ah the lovely thump!
I really enjoyed mine for a couple of years but it didn’t give the level of power you need in U.K. these days . Perfect for those lovely roads. Would have been great on the roads l just came home on in the west of Ireland with turf in the middle of them. My softail slim was a little heavy but felt like a bigger brother to the Enfield .

    • @FreddieDobbs
      @FreddieDobbs  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Spot on- the thump characterises the whole bike once you fire it up. This one I had did not like the rain (it cut out a lot on the big day’s riding we did😳).
I loved it though- very special bike.

Hi Freddie, excellent vid as always. Can’t quite tell but I suspect as a Triumph guy your muscle memory is kicking in and you’re pulling the clutch in when trying to kick start it (hence no compression). Best regards from the U.K.

Freddie looks like you are trying to kick it with the clutch pulled in. You don't do that. Keep hands off the clutch and the kick should ha e resistance. You will find top of the piston stroke when it's hard to push down from the highest point, then go for it. NO CLUTCH 😊, cheers Bob
