They say "the best dissertation is the done dissertation." This is hard to follow, however at the end of the day we just want to get done with the dissertation no matter how much we loved the topic and felt passionate and enthusiastic about that in the beginning. It all comes down to completion it may take 3, 4, or more years, all onto us. While seeking perfection, we burden ourselves, and that pressure burns us and kills our motivation to do work. Delayed submission is also prone to lose novelty. Therefore, we better get it done asap. If we just focus on completion, things become easier. Interestingly, we'll never submit bad work as we would definitely have a perfect draft before submission. This is what I have learnt during my journey. ❤❤❤

Thank you for this video. I just started my MA and I'm already getting a bit overwhelmed by everything, so it was honestly very affirming to hear someone in academia who was struggling and then to hear it work out was so lovely. I can't imagine it's easy to be so vulnerable online, but it's truly appreciated!

Nice work being honest Kaelyn, and thank you. I’ve been following your content for about a year now - I’m a licensed therapist turned historian-in-training of medicine making my way back into academia (almost done my MSc and currently applying for PhDs!!). Anxiety is the absolute worst - know you’re absolutely not alone (hello sleepless nights over here!) and from what you’re describing, you seem to be managing the challenges of anxiety really well. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you so much for your vulnerability. You being honest about the process is so important! Many of us don't see this and suffer in silence. I am now working full time (that job market is ROUGH) and pushing to finish my dissertation this fall semester. I made the decision to delay my dissertation in July and as expensive and heart-breaking as it was, it was the best decision. I am finding that I'm building an identity outside of academia in my new career and that my dissertation is NOT indicative of my value/worth as a person. Yes, I want a good dissertation, but I also just want to move on to bigger and better things. Wishing you all the best. Do what is right for you! And thank you for your contributions to your TH-cam community.

You've got this, both with the dissertation and with your content creation. People are dynamic. We change over time, and so do our interests and identity.
I've started going back to school in my 30's to get a bachelor's and then a master's. My life has pivoted drastically over the years from getting an associates degree for veterinary technology and working in that field for a few years, moving and being unable to get a job as a vet tech somewhere else without having certification forcing me into different work which ended up being a job as a legal assistant that I really enjoyed for the last decade, and now recently switching again to going back to school for botany/microbiology/toxicology with hopes of working in toxicology and public health. I haven't decided if I'm going to aim for a PhD or not, but videos like yours are incredibly helpful so I know what to expect if I do go down that path.
I 1000% understand how therapeutic vlogging about major life changes and struggles can be. I've done it before. It's amazing how something as simple as talking to a camera and uploading the vlog can help you be able to take a step toward healing and moving forward. Do that as much as you need to. If it helps you, it's worth it. And it also helps us as well, if any of us happen to be in a similar circumstance.
AND I've also dealt with pivoting the subject matter of my content. It's scary for sure, but making content you enjoy making and want to make is better than forcing yourself into a small box of content. If you want your channel to be more varied, then do it! Yes, you might lose some viewers who aren't interested in the other subject matters you post about, but you might gain new viewers with it and it will even out. Personally, as helpful as the PhD vlogs are, I would also absolutely tune in to watch videos about the horses or whatever else you want to post about.
Ultimately, go with the flow in the directions life takes you, and just do whatever feels right and makes you happy.

Making a decision is really hard… I was pushed into this early this year when my primary and secondary supervisors decided to go to a different university and I felt so lost… not knowing whether to go or stay. I decided to stay. This meant I had to scratch off all my progress from my previous research after a year into the program… and start anew with a different supervisor. I followed my gut. I’m more relieved.

At the symposium I said I'd been watching back through your content and the thing that comes through always is that you love having multiple jobs and multiple passions - if anyone watching thought you are about only one thing then they haven't really been listening! I hope the response to the last video has helped show that people appreciate seeing the tough side, and in Accepted you've created a place for fellow jugglers who are doing their best to make it all work. Sending hugs and support, see you soon! x

I feel the exact same way, I’m a 9-5er in marketing, graduated with a BA in history, wanting to pursue a MA in PR/Strategic Comms in the UK, an adult ammy equestrian (but on a break), run a publication and podcast about the royals, all while living with my parents in a small town on the east coast. I don’t know what to call myself. Writer-Marketer-History Buff-Royal Commentator-Ammy Equestrian-Soon to be grad student? I enjoy having multiple passions, but this world is very pro-one way lane, surrounding yourself with similar people is key.

Hi Kaelyn! I've been following your content for a while now and never commented but I just have to in this video.
    I admire you. So much.
I'm a first generation university student from Brazil (International Relations) and my dream is to do my postgraduate degrees at Oxford (with a scholarship, because without it I wouldn't be able to). Currently, I am at the end of my undergraduate degree, going through the motions of writing my thesis.
Seeing you overcome so many challenges has been very inspiring, because you make me believe that it's possible. Not only to go there and study and keep going, but also because you are not only one thing. I love research, but still am not sure if it's the (only) end path for me. I just wanted to say that when you are having a hard time thinking about how you should do the intro, just remember that you are not what you do. You offer to this community so much more than showing the things that you do, but by showing who you are, you give us something precious. And you are all those things you do, but also more. I love to see the life and the struggles and celebrations of who you are besides all the routine and activities you do.
Just wanted to come here and give you a little kindness and love. You've got this!! 💗

But the operative word is "intersection." it's all the rage doncha know :P You could be like, "hi I'm Kaelyn and my content exists at the intersection of academia and entrepreneurship, as I'm a 5th year... while working full-time as a ... at productivity lab". Wherever you end up, I'll keep watching! it just encourages me to see people striving while i'm trying to be all strive-y.

A doctorate is much harder than the general public might believe; it's complex, tedious, psychologically taxing and that's partially why merely 2% of Americans ever obtain these. Not sure about other countries, but keep your head up and your S.O.C.K. will be great, I'm sure because your subject matter helps pull the knowledge for the under represented demographic you're helping.... you're so close 🎉😊

I think you are right when you are discussing taglines. A label doesn't do any justice to who you are and what you do on the channel. Because your videos are more "slice-of-life" or can be summarized as "documentary." They are not so much a "productivity guru-esque playbook" I agree that experimentation is better than already defining a niche from in the beginning. The latter would stifle your creativity. I think the thread of all videos is just you in the end and these videos showcase how you deal with different various aspects of life (friends, writing, burn-out, the books you're reading, Moo, difficult decisions, Moving to London, Moo, your symposium, your documentary essay, etc.). It's like reading how a story unfolds. Yes, the different aspects that you choose to showcase in your videos don't categorize your videos, but they are enriching! These are my two cents here.
