  • “It’s the first time I’ve ever experienced anything like this… It made me feel like dance is its own language.”
    We brought in two international dancers to choreograph a piece together. The challenge? They don’t speak the same language.

    David Vergaras / david_vergaras
    Music: Drifting - G-Eazy feat. Chris Brown & Tory Lanez

      I liked the idea of the video, and then it become more interesting to see how it's work - they were really good! I can feel the feeling and the story that they tried to share with their choreography. Right now, I am pursuing my degree in communication science, and that's true that communication is not just about words and language because there are many other aspect that makes us, human, communicate each others. I think I'll share about this on my blog! 😊

    I loved the concept of this video but as someone that lovessss the dance community and watching dance videos, I have a pet peeve of when I'm trying to actually watch the choreo but the direction makes it hard to follow because of the camera work and sudden angle changes. It looks cool for a video but it takes away from the dance itself. It's like the two arts of making videos and dance are conflicting.

I ship them haha but what an interesting concept really I always wondered how foreign soldiers were able to marry foreign women tho none of them really spoke a common language well and I guess this is it sometimes you don't need words to communicate in fact sometimes things are easier and less complicated without the obstruction of words

    • @mohamedn87
      @mohamedn87 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Goh Ying Xuan verbal language or words can rather be a obstruction to communication especially since humans don't have a common one. Though verbal language was intended to facilitate communication among humans, it rather has done the opposite obstruct it to a huge extent. It's ricidulous we have these yet we are all one as a human race.

    • @mohamedn87
      @mohamedn87 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    • @mohamedn87
      @mohamedn87 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Goh Ying Xuan . . . If we are able to come up with verbal languages. Then I don't why we can't design a one global language verbal or other type for us to communicate to one another in, in addition to the languages that already exist on this planet.

    • @personperson8563
      @personperson8563 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Adam Yusef isolation, separate cultures developed their own languages although these languages continue to grow and evolve. The closest thing to a global language is English- which is the world’s Lingua Franca (common business language) Also no one is just going to switch to a language like that, that’d way harder then you think

      Sure, I'm using your comment to procrastinate but it's fine! A little short story I hope will do :P
      Rio and David finished their dance and when everyone started clapping David just collapsed onto the ground. He was tired and just wanted to rest. Rio went to get water but couldn't stop staring at him. All that ran through her mind was, how did we pull this off? As everything was wrapping up David got his stuff together. Rio didn't know how to say goodbye, mostly because she didn't want to. So, she ended up turning her back to him and thought he would just leave. David had other plans he came right up to her and tapped her on the shoulder trying to tell her it was a lot of fun. Rio just kept a smile on her face which she felt so dumb for because she couldn't help it. David decides to go for a hug goodbye, but Rio hesitated and made it and awkward hug. David kind of played it off, and Rio waved goodbye. David walked away and Rio wanted to hit her head on a poll thinking to herself, "That was real smooth, Rio!!!" She ended up going back to her apartment and shoving her face into the pillow. "That is the last thing he's going to fucking remember; how awkward I made the hug." UGGHHH! She just shoved her face into the pillow and screamed. After dwelling in self-pity for a few hours she got hungry and decided to go downtown to get herself some dinner. Her best friend met her there. She asked "You did what??! How'd you even put it together!?" "It just did, we just worked it out so simply once we got into the groove" she answered. "I can't wait to see it" her best friend replied followed with "Was he cute?" "You have no idea, and so sweet! But I messed it up at the end by making the hug awkward…" "Well, at least you won't ever have to see him again" her friend told her. She nodded and then went back home to sleep. Before she knew it, it was a month later and she kept brushing off how awkward it was, but then the video came out. Below was his Instagram. Rio scrolled and double tapped an old picture and freaked out and unliked it as quickly as she could. She decided to give him a follow to make it look like, hopefully, Instagram just wanted to tell him about the follow. And then she got a notification, and it was David, liking her picture from July 27, 2016. And then a "Ping!" and there was a message in her direct message box. It was David, and a really bad translated Spanish to Japanese from Google that roughly said "Do you want go coffee? I'll be in Japan next week". She said "Yes." And she said it again a year later, as they performed this exact dance at their own wedding. Dancers always just have to dance eh?

    Dancers aren't the only ones who can overcome language barriers. This applies to everyone alike. Only 10% of the words we speak account for the way we communicate. So many people fail to realize this.

    "There are always nerves and insecurities, but I think when you lose those in your art, the art doesn't have meaning."
    This is so beautifully said and relatable: I had a gym class where our class and another class was supposed to dance, given only a short amount of time to rehearse, choreograph and memorize our dance. This was our pre-finals exam. We had to do two dances: one with a group which we were divided in, and one individually. We danced and choreographed, and it was difficult at first, but then I got the hang of it with the other group mates. When it was my group's turn to dance, a couple of other guys laughed at us and mocked us, but really the joke's on them because when we saw how they performed, a lot of them weren't prepared and were just fooling around (much to our gym teacher's dismay). We finished, and we were happy as a group. Well, the individual dance came up, and when I danced, some of my classmates also called me some not nice things, and were mocking me, but again, the joke's on them because when they danced individually, they looked unprepared and were taking the exam as a joke - as in, they were giggling like maniacs while they were dancing. I finished, and I was slightly hurt but I was like 'nah, screw whatever the hell they're gonna say about me, at least I had done something and I had done my best,' and I felt somewhat relieved.
    I got a passing score, and the group that I was in got a passing score as well (I got slightly lower individually than my group's score, but whatever, I was still fine with that). I felt pretty proud of myself, and of my group mates despite our differences, insecurities, and struggles. The point is, if you don't struggle in the process of making art from scratch, then your art doesn't have meaning. I struggled with it, and I'm sure my group mates did so too, with all the teasing and pressure, but at the end of the day, at least our art had meaning. :)

    Dancing is one of these things that don't need words to be understood. sure, coming up with choreography needs understanding, but once the energy is the same it's easy to just not speak at all and let the music, the rhythm, the dance completely take over. its what fascinates me about dancing the most

    I think people should do stuff like this more often. It’s a great way of people having to really look at each other, listen, and judge less.

    "I see you, you see me, I feel you, you feel me. That's how it should be in the world." This reminded me of why in the Zulu language they greet by saying 'Sawubona' which means exactly that, I see you.
