What a nightmare it must’ve been to judge this battle. To have to pick between Tony Vegas and Prime Cuts, when both were absolutely otherworldly. So much technical skill and musicality on display. The way both would work the crossfader and channel fader with one hand. Not to mention, stretching the pinky out to work the turntable also at times. All the while, creating patterns that sound incredible. I still can’t wrap my head around all of it to this day. 👏🏼

Alot of innovative techniques here, particularly using his unorthodox true hamster reversal of input channels.

Yeah. It blew my mind when I first saw the new things he was doing with the fader reversed. I actually thought he should've won on the night. The guy who came second, DJ Excel, had an amazing set in the UK Final, the year before this, and should've beaten DJ Pogo, and gone to the World Final. He did one trick, where he cut up a Moog tone on one deck, while using his elbow to pat the beat that was playing on the other deck. It was some crazy shit that I've never seen anyone do before or since. Anyway, the video was never released, and hasn't been uploaded on here. I heard that DJ Pogo is the only person who has the footage from that night. Oh, and Excel was the inspiration behind Q-Bert's "Crab" scratch. Q saw him doing a 2-fingered scratch called the "Twiddle", at the '95 Vestax World Final, where Q was judging, and he copied it, incorporating 2 more fingers, and called it the "Crab".

A lot of this routine ended up on the B-Boys Revenge mix the Scratch Perverts did in 1998.

He should've won this year, for doing all of that new stuff with the fader in reverse mode. Prime Cuts did some new stuff with the fader reversed as well, but it was Vegas who started it all. Check out his set at the '97 ITF Western Hemisphere battle to see where it all began.
