    ▬ About the Behmor roaster ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
    The Behmor 2020SR Plus coffee bean roaster is an easy to use coffee roaster that allows the user to utilize pre-programmed roast settings or manually control roast parameters. Roast 100-gram samples to 1 pound small batch production The Behmor Coffee Bean Roaster employs patent-pending smoke suppression technology for roasting.

    ▬ About the Gene Café roaster ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
    The Gene CBR-101 coffee roasting machine is very popular with home roasters - especially thanks to its excellent roasting results with very simple operation, but also thanks to its value for money. It is a convection roaster, i.e. it roasts by supplying hot air. The beans (max. 250 grams) are constantly turned so that they roast evenly. The appliance is controlled by two wheels: one for the temperature supply, which controls the temperature gradually up to 250°, and one for the time. This allows you to intervene very quickly and easily in the roasting process and adjust the curve.

    I've had a Gene for over 15 years and I love it. Initially I went through a couple of the heating elements in the first 18 months and then the manufacturer upgraded the quality of the element and the second replacement has lasted ever since. I roast about 3-4 lbs a month and I am very happy with the Gene. I use it on top of the stove and use the overhead vent hood to take care of the smoke. I can roast 4 full batches before I empty the chaffe collector.

    I have been using a toaster oven equipped with a rotisserie basket for years and I get great results although it is more manual and you have to may close attention to the roast colour and cracks.

      Great to hear. In self made solutions I always recommend to put some emphasis on airflow to have a large enough portion of convective heat transfer.

    You described the differences between those machines and this is good, but you didn't explain why they are important. There is no recommendation between those machines in this video. Which one is better than others in a specific scenario. Who should choose Behemor and who should choose Gene and why. The only two differences I remember watching that video is that Behemor has a bigger basket than Gene, and using Gene is harder to hear when coffee crack. The most important subject, recommendations, in this video is missing.

      Thank you for your valuable feedback, Marcin.
      It is not easy to give a clear recommendation on which roaster for whom. The advantage of the Behmor is for sure, that you can press one buttons and the roaster does all the rest. For some people, this will be of help. On the other hand, there are some features, I like about the Gene roaster, e.g. the large window, the fact, that it needs hardly any maintenance and that the roast chamber can directly being removed after the roast to immediately cool the beans externally.
      Kind regards

    I just bought a Behmour 2000 AB and could not be happier. I find the auto mode P2 works great for me. I don't worry about the time when the beans yellow because I have found most small varieties of coffee beans transition from green to yellow in this mode about at 4:30 or so and at that point I speed up the drum to go into the Maillard phase....I listen for true first crack ignoring outliers which is usually at between 7:00-7:30...then push C to countdown the development phase...if I want a darker bean I add 15 secs., darker yet 15 secs., darker yet 15 secs..
    I let the machine go about 1.5 minutes into the cooling phase then pull the drum( once the drum is pulled I close the door and kick the cooling phase back in for the sake of the machine and to prepare for the next roast) and I cool my beans down on my front step on a big cookie sheet that is chilled to about -10 degrees( we have winter here). They cool down fast.
    I have roasted Ethiopian Yergacheffe, Brazilian Bourbon Santos, Guatemalan Antigua and Rwandan Gakenke.
    I find they all yellow about the same, first crack is about 7 mins to 7:30 and I vary the development time as I see fit for the roast color I want.
    On P2 once the machine comes up to heat I let it monitor the temps(I record temps every 30 seconds for my own information.)
    I find this a very simple method allowing the machine to monitor the temps never getting near auto shut off and I can concentrate on speeding up the drum, listening for "true" first crack and attendiing to C duties and + duties as required.
    Doing it this way instead of in manual mode temps are quite stable and I am not having to do the "chase the temperature dance" I have seen some people do.
    I have roasted four varieties of coffee beans so far and I get consistent repeatable results. Love the Behmour and still learning.
    I think some people think the auto modes are no good( and I have read that multiple times) but in truth they assist in maintaining stable temperatures so you can concentrate on the roast phases and doing what you need to do when it needs to be done.
    Therefore people go into manual mode thinking they can contol things better, chasing the temperature and end up with different temperatures, different phase times and different "first crack" times and different development times... therefore getting different and inconsistent results, bad batches and non repeatable roasts.
    You cannot be chasing temperatures up and down on every other roast and expect consistent repeatable results....it just won't happen and I think that is where people get frustrated.
    P.S. I preheat to 140 degrees always then put the drum in and then restart the roast.

    Genecafe all the way. It’s simple to use, like everything there’s a learning curve but it’s lots of fun. My main criticism would be the cooling, which is everyone’s critique, also if they could increase the capacity to 500gr. I know there’s a 1 kilo version. But overall a great roaster.

    • @CoffeeRoasting
      @CoffeeRoasting  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely. You should use an external cooling. They are indeed working on a 500g roaster.

Thats a testament to the quality of the unit.

    I have a Gene Cafe as well but had to do a teardown to do a heater replacement. Mine is over 10 years old but did not have a lot of run time as I have other roasters I used for small batches. The Gene Cafe has quite a few wear points, my drum ceramic support bearings had flat spots on them and the right side drive bearing is getting slop. Just ordered the Behmor 2000AB as it's mechanicals appear simpler and have easier access and not a bunch plastic.

      Hi! Sweet Maria's in Oakland sells the upgrade for the 1600 models and it beeps to let you know and it gives you a 30 sec window to keep it going by pushing the start button! Check out Sweet Maria's website and it's not too expensive either but I think it's worth it. That way at least you can be doing other stuff in your kitchen during a roast and just listen out for it.

    • @CoffeeRoasting
      @CoffeeRoasting  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Steve. It only beeps once during the roasting process and cannot be bypassed. You should not leave the roaster unattended - especially the Behmor.
