Tilting Trikes Part 10 - making misalignment spacers on Myford lathe

Misalignment spaces are little fittings that allow the angle through which a rod end bearing can rotate to be increased greatly. This is important when the rod end needs to angle freely through two directions, such as for suspension movement and steering on a vehicle.
In this video, I make some misalignment spacers for my tilting velomobile project using a Myford Super 7B lathe.

@4:18 Achually! Special lathe files exist. I my self use Bahco feather file, works excellent. I also have a long edge lathe file.

They look great , nice seeing getting it further , mine spacers have arrived too and i will collect them tomorrow , i ve been thinking that it would be wise to have somehow some stops for the tilting before rod ends go to their limit , i havent thought so far how i will put them to my design but i would like to hear your opinion about that , i think that if the bike can lean more than the rod ends there will be excesive amount of load on them .

Yes, I will be using tilt and steering stops to prevent the rod ends bouncing off their limits.

Hi, in fact the 5mm ones are used for the steering linkages, the ones supporting the weight use 8mm bolts. I’ll show a closer look at how it all fits together in the next vid.

Do you think M12 rod-end has sufficient strength for my reverse trike steering? 125cc

It’s difficult to say with any certainty, you would need to determine the specified load capacity of the rod ends and do some stress calculations for you particular application. Don’t take my word for it, but M12 sounds about right. Mine are M10.

The rod end bearings are from eBay; if you search for 10mm rod end, you will find the kind of thing. These are cheap, non-branded ones.
