Cressida! The 1st car I ever drove about 15 years ago when I was still in High School. No Rev limiter, just had to listen to the engine to know that it's time to change gears.
Coming from small town KZN these Cressidas were seen as aspirational vehicles for small town folk back in the day. They dont die easily and they have the best ride comfort on rutted rural roads. Whoever owned one really took pride in them and its good to seem them on the roads even till this day...
This is so awesome! I learnt to drive in my dad's 1990 2L GLE. It was a beautiful silver gray. So plush inside and the stick out digital clock was so fancy! I even drove my Matriek afskeid dance date in it!
This is the first car I ever drove, I think I was 9 years old. My grandfather has had 3 of them and my absolute dream is to get him a mint 86 Cressida GL Station Wagon.
I'm from Soweto. I never knew there was a Cressida town in Mzansi. Thanks for this video. You just got yourself a subscriber and I love how you engage with everyone on the comments.
Amazing video. I have the same vibe with my Sani. I needed a car that can get me offroad, and be a reliable highway traveller. Its not much to look at, and when I do want to gatskud I use my 7 Series Beemer. But for everything else...man...still so in love with my Sani held together with stickers, wire, zipties and spit. It just keeps going. Thats what these kind of cars brings to your life.
Hi fellow atheist. My front opposite neighbour used to have a Nissan Sani. The ONLY ONE in my hood. I was mad at him when he told me he sold it. Like how do u sell the ONLY Sani in town?? LITERALLY the only one. It was beautiful, blue with black stripes. Original everything.
I adore the Cressida, my primary school teacher had a blue one, 2.8, I can't remember if it said Executive or Twincam but I remember it said a word. It was beautiful, electric windows/mirrors, sunroom, tinted windows, colour bumbers, a boot spoiler and a front bumper splinter,it also had that sail cover inside the back window and those twimcam rims and she kept it clean all the time.
My after owns one. Still fresh and mint. We are busy hunting either mechatronics or complete gearbox to give it new life. I just grew up seeing it and learned to drive with it. Some cars are madw to last 😊
Good day. Very nice video, I love your commentary. I always loved Cressida cars. Especially Gli 6 2.8 + 3.0! I currently drive a 2016 Corolla 1.6 Prestige. I would like to have a Gli 6 or 3.0l automatic just for weekends. Keep up with the nice videos.
Tops. I've been visiting Bhumshela for the last 10 years for work. Am so amazed with the Cressidas. As an avid Toyota driver Myself. Hilux drivers be like... Toyota all the Way.❤❤❤
Excellent video! Reminds me of my childhood friend's dad and his Cressida 2.8i he got in 1987. His pride and joy... You asked about similar car cultures - there's a group of T3 Kombis used as taxis in Sydenham, Durbs. I used to see them all parked in an open lot along Randles Road, maybe 20-30 of them, mostly mint condition. They range from early 80s models through to 90s Caravelles.
13:27 The beige Cressida with the mags looks like the neatest car on the rank. Awesome video and great story, but would have been even better if you filmed that one up close.
This is a Paradise. I didn't know this place exists. now I know where to find a Cressida for my restoration project. I need a Cressida to restore and engine swap, not for racing but for daily driving. I want to make a Cressida with air suspension for those long freeway trips and I know the engine bay is big enough for a large block so I have many options
Parents had one back in the day.. 90s model with the LED screen that looked like Star Trek computer screen, electric windows and that overdrive button(like a computer turbo button hahaha)
@carscoza parents took us kids on vacs throughout SA. We had our annual trip to Dbn & Jhb from Cpt to meet his family so seen places in SA as they grew. I think it was late 80s vehicle.. the dash console I recall as Star Trek was huge then. Dad kept it till 2000s
I use to do a lot of work in the rural areas and back in 2015/16 I went to do some work in applesabosch hospital when I saw this. I told people that there’s a town full of creaidas and nobody believed me 😂. So happy this has come out now.
I feel you could've gone a bit further. Take a ride in one. Go up the hills the man spoke about, be a "driver" for 2 rides or so, find scrapyards that specializes in them stuff like that
Many years ago before the Avanza came,Cressidas was everywhere in Gugulethu and Nyanga here in Cape Town,it was nicknamed by outsiders as "cockroach taxis". I worked in those areas often in my previous career, dont know why it was nicknamed that.
So calling them cockroaches would be because they say cockroaches can survive pretty much anything and are very hard to kill, so it's because they are so strong and unbreakable. So I see it as a compliment
Amazing! My late dad had a metallic blue 1985 Cressida 2.8i in immaculate condition. Looked like new wen it was stolen from him in 2007 with 120 000km😢.
Also in Soshanguve and Mabopane in Pretoria, most are still in good shape, personally I love the 2200 GLE(Getaway) or the normal 2200, 2400 diesel is also nice.
For a guy from DiepKloof(Soweto) your township Zulu leaves to much to be desired but your ENGLISH comes directly from the British empire. explains why you are behind the Microphone not behind the wheel of a Cressida. Umhlaba wethu gone forever😢
He’s not Zulu and most people in Soweto dont even speak Zulu it’s a third language , lona la bonahala hore ha la kena sekolo . Stay in your lane uyeke ukuphapha.
As Japanese, I'm very happy and ploud to see so many Cressida is still working their duty. Thank you for loving and trusting for a long time.
I have owned many cars over the years and my 2.4GLE Cressida is the only one I regret selling. It was a fantastic car!
Japanese huh?
Why ploud though??😂😂😂
I love this so much. Please do more of these local features around the country, especially in townships and rural areas.
Ndima nawe Tata, 🙏🙌
Lekker guys, we're on it!

One of my favourite vehicles ever....
I end up buying a mark II because I couldn't get a cressida in good conditions in 2006.

Yeah, it's great.
This is so awesome! I learnt to drive in my dad's 1990 2L GLE. It was a beautiful silver gray. So plush inside and the stick out digital clock was so fancy! I even drove my Matriek afskeid dance date in it!
Great feature - my late father in law had the original Cressida - drove it for 18 years. Thanks for reviving his memory for me.

We passed this place on our way to Ballito this past December. This is quite cool. We were surprised why there was so many Cressidas.
hahahahahaha!! I would also be surprised
By far the best car I have ever driven

The after life paradise of Cressidas. A true testament of Toyota's longevity. If you know, you know.

Bhamshela, very rural town but with aweaome views and hills
I had a 2.4 gle. Had good times with it. I had 9 people in the car on one night.
Great show🎉
I like - great car - it is already an icon of automotive history. Thanks for the insights and docu 👍
Awesome video, I’m totally with you on this.
We're so grateful, thank you
Even in Namibia we got Cressida, Toyota made reliable cars indeed
Awesome, also consider to come to Pretoria Mamelodi where there's more 300 VW Mk1 tht works as a local taxi as well.
Growing up in the area, we just always knew and referred to the town as Cressidaville.
We must investigate Toyota😅. All their cars are strong.
I use to do a lot of work in the rural areas and back in 2015/16 I went to do some work in applesabosch hospital when I saw this.
I told people that there’s a town full of creaidas and nobody believed me 😂. So happy this has come out now.
Ah that's so cool!
Now I'm inspired to go get myself one. Bring it back to life. Or a Yaris Zen sedan- how I want me a Yaris
I feel you could've gone a bit further. Take a ride in one. Go up the hills the man spoke about, be a "driver" for 2 rides or so, find scrapyards that specializes in them stuff like that
Your feelings lol
😢 could only wish for a 89 model .... (year I was born)
My grandfather had an 2L 89 model....

I saw a Cressida probably modded going toe to toe with a M3 the other day on the N3 going at about 180km/h , that car was nuts !
Have you seen the drag racing Cressida on our channel! Absolute monster
Also go to Estcourt, near the provincial hospital
