    From what I know of the Masks, they weren't named after the Priests - the Masks were named, and by taking the Mask, the Priest assumed the name as their own - Krosis, for example, translates to Sorrow. Konahriik translates to "Warlord". They aren't names - they are titles.

This was one of my favorite things about this game. Literally three playthroughs in before I even realized this hidden gem. I’m about to start a new play through soon, and I’m so looking forward to revisiting the things that made this game so great, and to find even more.

    What if Konahrik is YOUR mask as the player character?
    When you put on the wooden mask it is never specified that you travel back in time. What if you are reliving your past life as the Dragonborn in the previous Kalpa? Like a reincarnation thing. We already know that a) reincarnation exists in ES as that is the story of the Nereverine in Morrowind and that b) Azura, who is a daedra prince is behind the Nereverine prophecy, which would help further explain why the daedric smithing perk is tied to Konahrik.
    This also explains why Alcuin “rescues” you in the opening scene of the game, and how he knows who you are when he resurrects Solakhniir in
    Kynesgrove
    My two theories are that in your past life during previous Kalpa you were the Dragonborn leader of the dragonpriests, which being Dragonborn would make the dragons trust you in such a role. You then were either doing Alduins bidding and during the revolt against the dragons the mask was taken from you OR you sided with Parthurnax and fell during Alduins vanishing and the other dragon priests sealed your mask at the alter to save it for the next Dragonborn.

      But the Nereverine was reincarnated WITHIN the same Kalpa. Also, as far as we know, while it has been confirmed that the idea of Kalpas exist, we don't know if the main timeline is a different Kalpa or if we are still in the first Kapla. After all, there have been two times that Alduin could have ended it, but decided not to. It seems likely that while Alduin knows he has the power to do this, he does not want to go through with it, as seen in this video he would rather be worshipped as a god.

    • @Ackalan
      @Ackalan 3 ปีที่แล้ว +45

      That's a horrible theory. It's more likely the wooden mask is simply the key into the room guarded by its own (now very dead) priest. If you look at how Skyrim was structured at the time of the dragons it was a fractured country ruled by creatures with no concept of society.
      The dragon priests were the go-between between the rulers of men and the rulers among men. The ruling dragon in an area would make a demand of more sacrifices or treasure, the priest would listen to the dragon, assure it that of course it'll happen and go down to the local king and tell him to get three maidens and 5 000 gold or whatever for the dragon, or it'd come down and get it himself. The king would realize that having his subjects and lands burned would not be very profitable and thus pay up.
      This would foster a culture of very strong tribalism and ties to the dragon and its territory, since there's only so much of your people and wealth you can offer up to every passing dragon before you can't pay and someone burn you anyway, so the deal was most likely this:
      We very small and flammable humans pay you and ONLY you lord Dragon, and you keep other dragons away from us. You tell this guy here what you want and we get it for him and he'll deliver it to you.
      This however leave the entire country weak since there's no overall government, and there are still plenty of hostiles living around the Nords at that time, so every now and then a good and proper war is called for where all of Skyrim need to participate either to expand or defend. This would call for a priest to follow the army and keep an eye on the leader to make sure he doesn't get an funny ideas of disrupting the power balance between the units, dragons, humans etc and fry the enemy and display the might of the dragons (and priests) to the Nord warriors. Since all masks has to be placed it's probably a more or less democratic way of appointing someone to this position, either that all agree and place their mask, or they got killed until enough masks were gathered from the opposition to force their choice.

  • @sauloalves4994
    @sauloalves4994 4 ปีที่แล้ว +589

    The priest is called "Vahlok the jailor", so I would assume he owned the wooden mask and here's why... The wooden one has the power to access a pocket dimension of sorts, which was used to lock away Konahrik's mask.
    The jailor must have been very powerful, since he alone defeated Mirahk, and we could assume he was the most trusted and loyal priest, focusing not on power or wealth, but to devote entirely to his mission, choosing to wear a simple wooden mask and not even bothering to name the thing.

    • @Proletarius87
      @Proletarius87 4 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      Or simply it belongs to Miraak. Fact that it don't have any other power except that of "a wormhole effect" and don't has a name suggests that once it belonged to a traitor.
      After his rebellion Miraak lost its grace in dragons' eyes, so they took its powers, so with the name, to erase story of him out of existence.

    "Konahrik" means "warlord" in the common tongue. Since no Dragon Priest is related to Konahrik, what if it was meant to be for the Dragonborn?
    The Dragonborn is a living army by the time he or she's found all of the Dragon Priest masks. Mastery of the Thu'um over the dragons themselves, blades or spells or shadows, claiming so titles that only one mortal in millenia could achieve without the gifts of the gods.
    The Dragonborn is also completely autonomous. Like the Hero of Kvatch and the Nerevarine, the Dragonborn's entry into Skyrim is by being released from imprisonment for unknown crimes. The Dragonborn controls his or her own destiny. He or she bows to no one out of obligation or from oppression. If the Dragonborn aids someone, it is the Dragonborn's choice, not the Dragonborn's compulsion.
    But I'm writing this in the middle of the video.

    I can’t believe modders never took the opportunity to make a quest mod out of this. You could have the Dragonborn go back in time and interact with the dragons, dragon priests, old nords, Dwemer(?), pre-falmer snow elves. Maybe you could even be the one who starts the rebellion with the help of the nords. It would be a large undertaking considering you’d need to overhaul all of Skyrim’s map to be set in that time period with altered geography, restoration of the ruins to legitimate holds, and new weapons and armor but it would be amazing.

    My personal theory is that Konahriik, being a title rather than an actual name as some people have pointed out, has a different owner. We know that some Dragon Priests were particularly nasty individuals and I imagine there would be little to no event, even the Dragon War that would have made them unanimously get out the mask, let alone decide who would wear it. Given that the Elder Scrolls saga tends to just have legendary items simply fated to fall into the player's hands, mostly like fate being played out (perhaps as written in the Elder Scrolls themselves), we do exactly what is necessary, to prove us as Dovahkiin as more powerful and greater than all the other Dragon Priests, putting the masks like trophies on the busts to claim Konahriik... OUR mask. For WE are the "Warlord" who felled the others and is the one worthy to wear the greatest mask. Only, we don't serve in the Dragon Cult, which is a bit of a snag in that plan.

    The Daedric smithing perk, I believe, means that the mask is as difficult to smith as Daedric armor (or its similar to work with) and *not* that Konahrik has Daedric origins.
    Why? Well if we look at Stalhrim armor, it requires the ebony smithing perk, and we are told in-game this is because a smith has to work with it in a similar way to ebony. It doesn't mean it's ebony, so in the case of Konahrik its not *necessarily* of Daedric origin. Though if it was of Aedric origin (Akatosh/maybe Alduin), that might explain the similarity.

    My theory would start with the Vahlok the Jailor. Bethesda didn't name him "the Jailor" without a reason. The wooden mask belonged to Vahlok the Jailor. The Breton steals the mask from his tomb or hired some goons to do it for him. On the other hand, Konahrik belonged to Miraak from the beginning. The game represents Miraak as the first Dragonborn so he is very close to being a dovah. The case of the Konahrik has a shape of a dragon head and it is above all other dragon priests' masks. A dovahkiin would count as the cult's highest member from the default and it would also fit the description of Konahrik, meaning warlord. Dovahkiins are beings who can use shout and magic also they are good at melee combat too.

    Similarly Konahrik was waiting for an owner? And it COULD of been gifted to Vahlok the Jailer when he returned to Skyrim but stayed behind to keep Mirrak from arising.

    • @WH40KHero
      @WH40KHero 4 ปีที่แล้ว +37

      Thats...actually quite the plausible theory. I mean, think about it like this: If someone is loyal enough to give all he has to a cult, its not as much of a stretch to think that he or she would give up his or her own name, to strip himself of his former identity completely to join the ruling elite of a circle of seemingly undying, immortal priests who have ruled for millennia, unbeknownst to the public that the people wearing each masks are most likely exchanged once killed? And since Kohnariik (the mask) is so extremely powerfull, i could totally see it as something of a trump-card only revealed in absolute emergencies, which require all eight dragonpriests to come together, strip themselves off their masks to reveal their most powerfull artifact. Which may or may not have the power to call upon the souls of all deceased dragonpriests and also make its wearer factually unkillable (assuming that the effects of the mask we see ingame are a mere shadow of its true potential if worn by a properly initiated and trained dragonpriest)?

      I am new to the Elder Scrolls lore in terms of seriously getting into it vs casually playing Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim so don't eviscerate me if I get this wrong, but the names of the Dragon Priests themselves don't seem like normal names for NPCs, that they are the names that the Dova would create for them which makes me like this theory. But I wouldn't be surprised if I was wrong.

Ahzidal the first great human enchanter, he enchanted the blades of the 500 Companions. Ahzidal, Dukaan and Zahkriisos were Miraak's acolytes. They literally haven't left any impact on Nirn there's no documentation of their exploits or feats. Also the masks are supposed to be Representative of Rank, it's very rarely power doesn't play into rank and considering Azhidal, Mirak, & Vahlok were some of the strongest mortals ever I'd make a good guess power was the biggest part in ranking them. Even Masked priests with little backstory give reasons to believe they're Exceptionally strong.
      - Alduin trusts Nahkrin with protecting the portal to Sovengarde. Logically he'd have to be absurdly strong for Alduin to trust him with protecting the portal.
      -Mirakk Trusted Dukkan & Zahrikosis to some extent. Most likely signifying some level of strength considering Azhidal was also apart of his circle and he's both absurdly strong & Knowledgeable.
      Majority of the Masked priest have some type of evidence/lore that can be used to quantify their strength and solidify their placement among the Dragon proest lords. The unnamed ones have literally nothing, their's no reason to try and gauge their power to be above the Lords in the Slightest.
      Edit: The masks were also given to those Alduin Trusted. Why would he give them to weaker Priests? To control them? That wouldn't make any sense considering many consipired with Mirakk, who literally was the only person at the time who could've slain Alduin.

Yet we see Vahlok and he is UNMASKED, he has no mask, whether because he wore the Konahrik mask we don't know. But during the fight with Miraak he was Vahlok not Konahrik, and their fight was land shaping. If he was the Konahrik then 8 Dragon Priest Lords chose the strongest one among themselves to fight Miraak a non Dragon Priest Lord and his acolytes. If he wasn't Konahrik then why would the 8 powerful Dragon Priest Lords send not a Lord after Miraak.
      Masks weren't given by Alduin to the Priests, they were given by the 'Dragons'. Each Priest had his own Dragon who made a mask for them e.g. Zaan and
      Thurvokun.
      Miraak and Ahzidal are examples where you can be powerful and not be a Lord. With both of them reaching into Oblivion for Daedric knowledge because the knowledge of the Dragon Cult wasn't enough for their power lust. Being a Lord doesn't mean you're the most powerful, it could be just you're powerful enough and influential enough as the Dragon didn't care much about how the Dragon Priests ruled and managed mortal related stuff.
      EDIT:
      Just because we don't know about many unnamed Priests doesn't mean they weren't powerful. As a fact we know very little about the kingdom of the Snow Elves and they weren't a Cult they were whole nation. Nords are just good at cleaning after they're done. Same goes for the Cult, after the Dragon War, Nords wanted to distance themselves from the Cult days and erased many records.

      Alduins soul can’t be eaten by a mortal. He is the world eater and destined to bring the world’s end. Alduin became greedy and wanted to conquer the world not destroy it. That’s bad so Kyne created a way to return alduins soul to akatosh so that he can be reborn and follow his true destiny. Akatosh created a dragon by using a mortal body (dragonborn) and Kyne taught it to speak Dovazhul. A dragon that’s born, destined to die. A weak mortal in body but an immortal dragon in soul. This weak dragon is the opposite of alduin and it is why he is stronger. Alduin sought a strong body forsaking his soul and destiny. As Dragonborn you slay him by being weak in body but strong in your dragon soul. Shaming him. Showing him how his destiny was not to be bested by a mere mortal and that he made a mistake through greed. You send him back to his dad for a proper whooping. Dovahkiin is basically just the cop who caught a bratty rich kid drunk in public and beats his ass before dropping him off to his dads house for yet another ass beating

    I also find it tangentially interesting that the Eldergleam Amber and the Wooden Mask both resonate a melody or a hum, and that they both have connections to not only gods but time/space too. It's interesting that the Dwemer came to a similar conclusion when trying to tamper with reality/time/space and ascending to a "higher" plane of existence, so they used instruments and devices that emit tonal frequencies to alter these factors of interest. Lastly, also a stretch, the dragons, beings who are capable of using their "Voice" to conjure power and sometimes manipulate the natural structures of reality, are the children of Akatosh; the Dragon God of Time. I don't have anything significant to say while trying to connect these things together, but there seems to be a coincidental trend with sound, frequencies, and tones used and understood as a conduit to the fabric of reality and to reaching Godhood. I wonder if ancient cultures of the series had some deeper understanding to this method that was perhaps lost to time.

    My theory :
    Each of the masks were forged with the help of individual high-ranking dragons in Alduin's army ,with Konahrik's creation being assisted by Alduin himself. But because of Alduin's disdain for humanity, nobody in his eyes was worthy of the mask.
    With the wooden mask being forged by Paarthurnax who had alredy turned traitor ,hence why it's made out of wood instead of some precious material.
    Each of the masks however, is tied to the dragon and most of these dragons were most likely killed or worse, causing the magic of the masks to go berserk and slowly corrupt their users. Hence why the majority of them went insane or were forgotten, with the exception of Nahkriin who is still very much sane and trusted.
    This also explains how the masked Dragon Priests are able to not only able to serve after death but also retain so much power, to the poont where they are arguibly the most powerfull undead you can encounter in the game.
    Dragons can't die of old age and can't truly be killed by conventional means, so that's why said priests are still "alive".
    Konahrik being tied to Alduin also makes sense because the mask exists in the past but not in the future, similar to how Alduin exists outside of time thanks to the Elder Scroll that was used to banish him

Either through diplomacy or war you had to get all the other masks together to be named Konahrik as the other dragon priests are minor kings in their own right. The dragon priests masks were made by either Alduin, Akatosh, or some other dragon but Miraak's mask was made by Hermaeus Mora as a symbol of their alliance. The Mask of Alkosh is the Khajit dragon cult version of Konahrik. The Mask Konahrik would be the symbol of High King until Harald's rebellion and he created the Jagged Crown, his symbol that he fell the dragons. The wooden mask was/is ceremonial, used to appoint dragon priests, and imbued with power to lock away Konahrik until another worthy of the title came along.

    As others have commented, the mask may have been made for the Dragonborn. Maybe not the player, but a Dragonborn to stand against evil dragons. To keep the balance between Akatosh's children and mortal races. The dragon priests may have taken it from Mirak in the battle and stripped it from his face. But before they could finish the job, Mora swept him away to safety. That resulted in the dragon priests, seeing the power this mask held and how corrupted its user became, took action to preserve the world. They locked it away where it could be found it absolutely needed, but not by any mere mortal. They also renamed it, as an insult to the former priest that wore it. calling it warlord as a way to show what it turned Mirak into. And with that, the mask was left undisturbed by anyone for eons.
    That might also be what kept them from fully dying. A fear that the mask would be found and used as a weapon against the whole world, and so they stayed in this realm, never fully dead and at peace. Ever guarding the keys to the most dangerous weapon of their age.

    I personally believe that the dragon priests adopted the names of the masks they were given and not the other way around. That explains why the priest without the mask didn't share the name with Konahrik. In a similar vein as the Umbra sword forces its identity and name on the wielder. That would be yet another interesting way for the dragon overlords to control their highest priests and ensure loyalty. Which would mean that all masks are made by dragons (maybe even including Akatosh/Alduin) and not the priests.
    I like the idea that Konahrik was made by Alduin (it sends back souls/shades of dead dragon priests, that he might have potentially devoured) and the wooden mask was made by Akatosh (for the time travel powers, but without a recipient)
    Another idea I've been playing with was that maybe the fact that the wooden mask doesn't have a name is the reason why it doesn't have an owner? Assuming that the priests took the names (and maybe identities) of the masks, someone taking on the wooden mask without a name would become nameless and without identity, becoming a sort of erased from existence. Or maybe it is similar in function to the Cowl of Nocturnal, hiding the wearer's name and identity if they take on the mask as their own. Maybe that one was the mask meant for the maskless dragon priest but he didn't wear it without needing it as it would kinda make him "Ethereal/invisible/non-existing" and his pride couldn't take it.

      Exactly. And the Wooden Mask belongs to Vahlok, used to seal away Miraak's old mask after he fled to Apocrypha. If Miraak were to try and return to claim his mask, he would have to defeat all 9 remaining priests. It also makes sense that Vohlok would hide his mask elsewhere, knowing that Miraak may come for him first, for revenge over his defeat.
      It doesn't make sense that Miraak's mask was made after his defeat, because he clearly had a tentacled influence on the 3 dragon priests on Solthstim.

    Wow man, you got a lot of information here that answered some of the questions I always had about this place and these masks.
    But after everything you pointed out I think you came so close, but didn't quite get there. And I think it all steams to one interpretation you made that was fundamental to your thinking. That being that you view the 8 masks being needed to unlock Konahrik as a lock put in place by the dragon priests. I have a different interpretation, and that's it's a lock put in place by the dragons themselves. Possibly by Akatosh himself. A fact I think is backed up by several choices made by the developers.
    To start with there is the name, Warlord. You need all 8 masks to unlock the Warlord. I think that pretty much sums it up right there. How do you get your 8 masks? By killing every dragon priest and claiming the mantel of Warlord. Sounds like a very dragon thing to do to me, to reward the one strong enough to beat your strongest acolytes.
    Next you have the wooden mask, made out of the material that would be most susceptible to the ravages of time. Yet time is exactly what it influences. Clearly Akatosh made the wooden mask. And it's purpose was to work as the gateway for someone to the vault were Konahrik was waiting. Again, this person would have had to have taken all 8 masks from the most powerful people in Tamriel.
    Now we have the fact that neither mask has a name from its owner. And the reason for that is actually very simple, they don't have any. Or rather, they didn't.
    Because now they do, the Warlord has come to claim what was always meant for him.
    So if you can't see were I'm going with this, then let me spell it out. Konahrik is the mask of the dovahkiin, only to be claimed after proving himself worthy. I assume for the purpose of fighting Alduin and purging him from Akatosh. So the player is the original owner. Also, take note of the fact that the mask is concealed with in a dragons head. Symbolizing that it is a gift being bestowed by a dragon to the player. Just as the lore states all masks were given to the original owner.

    Hear me out on this one, as this is a stretch: the player is a reincarnation of Konahrik. Miraak may have been the first dragonborn, but, who's to say he was the only dragonborn who was a dragon priest. Konahrik might have been the leader of the priests due to him being a dragonborn. Maybe they did fear the power of the mask, but, one of two reasons could have happened to why they would lock it up for fear it might fall into the wrong hands. Reason number one: he may have died. Either naturally or by Miraak and they locked it away in honor of their leader. Reason number two: the dragons and the other priests betrayed him. The dragons grew wary of his power, so, they instructed the priests to banish him and seal away his mask so no one would take his place. Skip forward many years as the last dragonborn is born. Konahrik's soul was reborn into the player. Granted, the mask may not be as powerful as if it might have been all those years ago, but, the player isn't exactly the physical Konahrik either, so, the full power of the mask could not be used. But hey, that's just a theory. A Skyrim theory. Thanks for reading.

      The funny thing is, since you start the game with no memory there's nothing to say you aren't the exact same dragon priest who got moved forward in time. Same thing happened to Alduin so it's possible, Alduin even got sent to the same place geographically.
      If that's the case, you betrayed Alduin, helped to send him into the future but lost your mask and got trapped in the future too.

      I know when I first played Skyrim, id always get these 3 guys wanting to beat me up. Couldn't understand why. I was a Khajiit, id go to Whiterun many many times, I would have a student from the College of Winterhold come and ask me to teach him of his spells. When I play other characters, its different. How many times have you had a woman from Mistwatch Tower tell you she was abducted. That doesn't happen anymore in the very beginning. All I know is when you play a different character, different things happen to you.

    I understand maybe 2 people will read this, but i have a pretty damn good idea. In the quest, Lost to the Ages, the dragonborn works with a sage, if you will, to locate a powerful dwarfen forge, and after deafening in my opinion the most scary dwarfen robot, can craft a item out of a super dooper rare metal called Atherium or something. The connection between the dwarfs and dragon preists is “yet do be discovered” however, lets not forget that the entire race of dwarfs disappeared. I think this definitely worth looking into or dissproving.

    • @citiestoash
      @citiestoash 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Very easy to disprove. The dragon cult was dismantled in 1e 140 in the merethic era. The Dwemer disappeared in 700th year of the first era. Far after the dragon priests were overthrown. The person you’re referring to isn’t a sage. Just a treasure Hunter and scholar who you collaborate with to put her soul to rest. Moreover. Even if the Dwemer and dragon cult timelines synced up. The Dwemer would not be working with the dragons to create a mask out of aetherium. The Dwemer didn’t care for gods. The game files say it was created with potential ties to daedric means. Leaning into the fact that the dwemer wouldn’t have played a part due to their dismissal of gods. I could keep going. Dwemer don’t have much if anything to do with the mystery

      Of the options given in the video, it seems the most likely. It's also entirely possible that the mask was never bestowed to anyone and was there as a sort of "if the need arises," kind of thing, but due to circumstances around the time of the rebellion, was never accessed.
