    Every time I hear Bolero, I cannot imagine doing that drum beat for so long, and I've played the timps for Yeovil Town Band. Stunning.

    Brilliant. To play such a repetitive piece with perfect timing and stick control with no fluffing of notes takes a lot of skill. Well done

    A fellow percussionist said to me that breathing is also a crucial part for this very challenging piece. Even though the same two bars are the only material in this work, their teachers would say to them: "Exhale for the two first beats, then inhale on the third. Redo these two steps over and over and you should be fine."

    • @potrelviewer9536
      @potrelviewer9536 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Same tip should also might work for string players; you can't do that crazy semiquavers frenziness at the beginning of the last movement of Bartok's Orchestra Concerto without breathing a few times...

    How many other instruments join in with the snare...I think I hear some flutes picking up the snare drum's rhythm. One of my most favorite pieces of music of all times. And no...I cannot figure out how a drummer can keep his/her sanity!! Well done!

    • @357pick
      @357pick  8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +Bobbie Munger Thanks. Bolero requires 100% concentration from the snare drummer. You are right about the flute picking up the rhythm. All through the piece different solo instruments pick up the rhythm. This can create problems when the instrument picking up those two measures accidentally turns the rhythm around or rushes the phrase (that happens with the bassoon soloist in this recording) In that case, there's only so much minor adjusting the snare drummer can do.

      +Don Hennig
      I believe the difficulty of a snare-drum ostinato in Bolero beats J S Bach’s ostinatos (especially in his organ works) any day of the week! Hmmm Maybe that’s a little way out. lol Anyway...many thanks for that very educational rendition of Bolero.

  • @ariefaundes
    @ariefaundes 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Hi, very good indeed. I only have a question: you make a double stroke in the 8th notes, with your right hand, why? Is that the right way to play it? I'm just learning to play drums, that's why I decided to learn and play this piece, starting just by ear, and seems more natural to my hands play only single notes... Thank you.

    • @357pick
      @357pick  7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      It's not a double stroke it's merely three rights. When you use the same hand to play a rhythm it makes for a more constant sound. This is the way I have seen most orchestral players play Bolero. I know some players who alternate the entire rhythm. Experiment, try playing those two measures alternating hands then playing it using three rights. Ggod luck.

      Thanks for posting this. I need to see that!! 😄 It will be fun to see what he did with bolero! I saw him perform years ago and got to meet him. Bad attitude, but ridiculously AWESOME musician!!! He stomped off stage just because someone did something he didn’t like, and then after his tantrum, came back to finish the piece. He wasn’t very friendly after the concert either. But man, he was amazing to watch!! He’s the only professional drummer I know who could have a really bad attitude and get away with it because he could back himself up with god-like chops. Anyone else would be fried and never work again, lol.

( I will be using either a pearl 14 by 5 and a half mcx maple or a mapex black panther 14 by 6 and a half brass sledgehammer snare tuning heads batter tight? resonant head tight? I do use Remo ambassadors top and bottom(should I go to diplomats? snare wires i am using puresound 20 strand(On my mapex I am using the twisted wires My wife would be impressed if I could survive the 16 minutes on snare. Eight Miles high by the Byrds is my speed Thank you.

      Thanks Michael for your comment. I used a Pearl Philharmonic 14x5 maple shell snare with Remo renaissance (diplomat) heads top and bottom. The snares are coated and uncoated steel cables along with wire. Your 14x5 drum would work but I would use diplomat heads top and bottom for optimum snare response. I hope this helps.

    I like the except and there is many ways of playing this pattern. Please confirm if my observation is correct when you are playing.
    1. You use a combination of wrist and arm movements playing the rhythm. I have seen other videos of excerpts you have played where the extreme dynamic soft was performed by shoulder movement. Is this correct?

    • @357pick
      @357pick  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You are 100% correct. It takes much longer for the larger muscle groups to fatigue than it does the smaller muscles (wrist only.) This technique gives one much more confidence when performing fast very soft rhythms such as those found in Shostakovich 7th symphony and Bolero.

    • @357pick
      @357pick  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, if you mean counting measures. I'm focused on those two measures that repeat throughout the piece and I'm listing to each soloist in case there are slight adjustments to be made. You can't be too machine like playing this work because a soloist might want to make a slight rubato etc.when playing their solo. My point is, if you're not listening the whole thing could fall apart.
