Perfectly stated! I never really liked theatrical stage magic much because even though you may not know how it’s done, you still know that it’s just a trick and that it’s all smoke and mirrors. David Blaine changed all that with Street magic. It was in your face and undeniable. Just pure magic. Not only did you not know how it was done, your mind couldn’t fathom how it would even be possible. David Blaine restored a love for magic that I had as a child but lost as I got older. After seeing his first special I immediately wanted to do magic again.
And to boot many of David Blaine tricks in Street Magic weren't that fancy, so you had plenty of angry magicians complaining that "he does the bitten coin, it's so lame!" instead of capitalizing on Blaine's popularization of magic, and even upping up their own game.
Fun Fact: David badly cut his little finger when he stabbed the card. His hand slid down the knife and it cut the tendon. To this day he still can't bend his little finger as much anymore.
Yeah, I started cringing out loud as soon as that scene came on because I knew it was the one. Looks so bad. David of course plays it off cool as a cucumber, but yikes, man.

Chris Angel uses fake paid full audiences and also steals other peoples tricks and then sues them into not being able to perform the magic they invented. I very much dislike Chris Angel. Blaine and Penn and Teller are awesome though. Except for Blaine's bullet catch I hated that.

Hello Chris when I was starting magic and search in TH-cam magic tricks I didn't found anyone magician who teaching like this way with interesting things and topics you are my huge inspiration love from India
Bro I’m 24 years old and at the age of 6 years I was watching David Blaine late night when he was on tv. Like everyone born in the 90s should damn know him already
i’m 16 and i found david blaine one day watching like the news or something and then started watching him and just researched him and he is literally insane bruh
Meir Yedid’s twisting arm illusion is one of the first tricks I’ve ever done that made me realize the joy you feel when a crowd goes wild for your performance. Very addicting feeling.
So fun fact: the reason he didn't want to remove his shoes is because he wasn't wearing the right color socks, which is against police uniform code. Something he was afraid to get in trouble for with his chief since it would be televised and a lot of people will see it. You can hear him tell his partner which he replies with "its ok, don't worry about it."
Being 18 years old and interested in magic and illusions, I’m so glad my parents told me about David, I remember my childhood with watching these older videos with my mom, still mesmerized, I’m loving your work and even if I’m not fully perusing anything related in illusions and magic, your channel is so inspiring and fun to listen to when drawing~
Chris, THANK YOU so much for this video. I’m close enough to the younger generation (I’m 24) already, but I was raised right! I have an old magic kit that my mom bought me when I was in elementary school and there’s an OLD DAVID BLAINE VHS TAPE that she recorded from live tv for me on it. I don’t do magic now, but I absolutely adored it as a kid and the video brought back so many memories.
Oh my gosh! This brought me back to my beginnings also. I had not realized the younger gen didn’t idolize Blaine until you brought it up but it makes sense. You were also an equal idol for me and brought me back into magic because yo taught me how to perform the amazing tricks he was performing. I put you in a similar classification as Blaine when it comes to artists that transformed my future. I can’t thank you enough!

@@MacrosBlack360 That's part of the magic though, creating the illusion. With street/close up magic, the "magic" comes from the reaction of the audience. In almost every levitation video, he used it. Plus, dummy actors and assistants. For example, in this video, he pulled out the teeth of the girl, obviously she is a actor.
Introducing a camera at all, really fucks things up for me. Like, even if you don’t use any camera tricks, stooges, or cheesy editing, I don’t know how impressed to be by any one trick. How do I know you just didn’t do some random dumb shit 100 times until it worked out right? How do I know if you are great at slight of hand, or if you just did 100 takes? I could make up a lot of stupid shit on the fly and try it on 100 people who look stupid, and it’s bound to work once, and I’m not even a magician.
The biggest problem about getting caught lying about editing, and lying about not using plants, is that you lose the trust of the audience. Using plants and editing you can do anything without much creativity. Check this out: Me: "pick a number between 1 and infinity" Plant 1: 5,621,023,814,403,415 Me: "haha, wow, ok, slow down, I'm writing it down. that's 5,621,023,814,403,415?" Plant: "yes" Me: "Ok...now I have to find that number somewhere...sir, pull out your wallet. take out a random credit card." Plant 2: "haha, wow, ok, um here?" Me: "check this out, the numbers match."
@@sydhamelin1265 Exactly. After learning he used editing to augment his levitations on his first special I never trusted anything he did again. If I see a magician live, I know I'm being lied to but the deception is done through masterful manipulation. That's the fun of it. It allows you to think "this magician actually has magical powers" even though you KNOW it's just a trick. Maybe David Blaine really did freeze himself and hold his breath that long but there's nothing fun about it when you just can't trust it.
I'm 33, and I remember watching David's specials when I was a kid. He's the one who got me interested in magic back then, and Chris is one of themagicians who got me interested in learn some stuff 2 or 3 years ago. So I'm commenting this video will be amazing, even before watching it!
Not sure if you'll see this but seeing what you've built over the years is really inspiring. I started following you back when I was younger and much more into magic, but even now when I longer study magic like I used to I still find myself watching your videos, the fact you've built an entire business around what you love gives me the belief I can one day do the same 😁
That levitation is what made me as a kid watch him over and over and over. I wanted to believe. And then I believed less and less. And then I was like: there is no god.
I think it's really cool to see you genuinely excited about tricks that also got me into magic. I would love to see more of this kind of video, like a trip back in time of tricks that inspired Chris Ramsay
Hi Chris, love your videos man. I've followed a few guys doing closeup magic but the audience reaction always gets me. Some people are just nonchalant and not impressed whilst some at the same table look like their minds are blown, shows me something ain't too kosher.
I think even though they’re very different, Shin Lim is the “David Blaine” of today’s magic in the sense that he inspires a lot of the new generation to do magic.
That levitation thing was SO much fun back in the day. I used to work at a movie theater and I taught some of the ushers how to do the Balducci levitation. The dim lights of the theater lobby and our black shoes and socks sold the effect so well. Never got old.
I love that you encourage/shout out to other magicians... the world needs more of you... I may not be subbed to David Blaine cause I like how genuine your magic is ... keep up the great work and kudos on the office that looks dope as fuck!!!
I'm so sad on the levitation, because I remember being frustrated that I couldn't figure out how he was doing what was shown on camera without something the people on the street would notice. So sad they did it with an edit.
Love your stuff Chris!...the one with the card in the officer's shoe, the reason he was worried, was that it's against their policy pretty much anywhere in the country, to remove any portion of their uniform, unless it's an emergency situation, especially their shoes!
I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s the case every year. Like someone else said, shark attacks are extremely rare but there are lots of dumb people with phones.
His illusions are mostly just the simplest tricks of palming or line of sight. The chicken is just the "watch me pull my thumb apart" trick but with a prop. If he ever hands you an icepick to inspect, ask him if you can borrow a Sharpie and watch his reaction. He's so much better at misdirection than anyone I've ever seen. He is so much better at preparing the audience to be dumbfounded than anyone I've ever seen. I wish he would show how his old illusions are done so people would realize how easily they were fooled by something so simple. Knowing how he did what he did doesn't ruin the magic for me, it just makes it more impressive and I wish he would share that with people. He takes the oldest simplest premise for tricks that kids do and turns them into "an unbelievable feat". Teller does a bit of the same type of misdirection, but Blaine is so much better at it.
@@GodofLovers Is there not value for the industry to let old tricks be revealed and force magicians to be creative? You can 100% know the trick and still be impressed if it's done well. This YT video is proof.

I’m with you man. Before Blaine for me it was Copperfield. Then when Blaine came along with his first special street magic that’s what did it for me. This is before the Internet so I had to wait until the next time he dropped a special on network TV to see what amazing stuff he next had planned. Got a chance to see his touring theater show and meet him in person afterwards. He even signed a deck of cards I brought. We talked US Playing card co. shop for a little bit (i’m from Cincinnati and that is where it was based.) So down to earth and such a genuine guy.
The knife through the menu stabbing the spectators card was a really good one, he messed up the nerves in his pinky during that moment. You see blood from his hand at the end of the video. That is commitment and that's what makes magic real to me. He's a true artist.
Man I remember all of these videos. This is what got me into magic in high school. I dont do magic anymore outside of a few little things I can show off and I still feel comfortable holding a deck of cards and manipulating it but man this takes me back

I'm one of your younger viewers and I can tell you david blaine definitely influenced me as well to be a magician. My favorite magician before I saw some of the talents of shin lim and others still can't deny him being in the top. Amazing magician hard to believe you are actually into magic but don't know David Blaine.
I did the levitation trick for my dad recently and he freaked out a little. I did the whole spiel of "It doesn't work every time. I have to really concentrate and focus energy. I might fall from the energy drain." I even pretended like I was dizzy from it. He knew it was a trick but he couldn't wrap his head around how I could do it on the fly in the living room. I had to have mercy on him and show how it was done.

"the real magicians pretend to do the fake magic" told me someone once
So sick Chris!! You’re killing it
David Blaine lost me when I learned he sometimes used camera and editing tricks. Bummer.
Yeah that was kinda whack but I don't think he's done that for a long time now, the vast majority of his tricks are legit
Check this out:
Me: "pick a number between 1 and infinity"
Plant 1: 5,621,023,814,403,415
Me: "haha, wow, ok, slow down, I'm writing it down. that's 5,621,023,814,403,415?"
Plant: "yes"
Me: "Ok...now I have to find that number somewhere...sir, pull out your wallet. take out a random credit card."
Plant 2: "haha, wow, ok, um here?"
Me: "check this out, the numbers match."
13:40 I laughed too hard at this…

*CR-CRAAACK!*
I've watched plenty of magic acts growing up, however, it is your videos that are getting me into card tricks!
Notice that while david is levitating, he's T posing.
I just love how excited Chris is to talk about David B. like this
Chris: "This is great vintage Blaine."
Me: Vintage... vintage... Damn, I'm old.
Awesome stuff. Congrats on the studio. Been watching for years.
I feel like he was that type of kid who like stopped talking for a couple years and no one knew why
Not sure if you'll see this but seeing what you've built over the years is really inspiring. I started following you back when I was younger and much more into magic, but even now when I longer study magic like I used to I still find myself watching your videos, the fact you've built an entire business around what you love gives me the belief I can one day do the same 😁
Start now, if you haven't. It takes years to build. If not now, when?
I still dont get how he got the card in the guys shoe without the guy being in on it.
Im a HUGE David fan , now yours too. So happy you reacted to him. Would love a collab video!
Let’s be straight, the real MVP here is Fruit Loops.
Aww man that's the one guy i remember as well!
His named popped into my head as soon as I saw him. Hope he’s going alright haha
We need more vids like this Chris!
Wow people really don't know who David Blaine is?? This makes me feel old lol
Hi Chris, love your videos man. I've followed a few guys doing closeup magic but the audience reaction always gets me. Some people are just nonchalant and not impressed whilst some at the same table look like their minds are blown, shows me something ain't too kosher.
It’s a real trick - said friends of David who would never lie for their friend
I believe Penn J. saying he himself and magicians are all LIERS .
Awesome new office Chris! Looks spacious and love all the white. Great video.
Chris: debunks that the levitation wasn't that real.
Also chris: levitates to somewhat the same height.
Me: WHAT THE FU-
I love that you encourage/shout out to other magicians... the world needs more of you... I may not be subbed to David Blaine cause I like how genuine your magic is ... keep up the great work and kudos on the office that looks dope as fuck!!!
When he did the nife trick he acualy cut him felf he talked about the trick a few years ago but just keept his cool
Finally some content i subscribed to this channel for!
I'm so sad on the levitation, because I remember being frustrated that I couldn't figure out how he was doing what was shown on camera without something the people on the street would notice. So sad they did it with an edit.
As a young magician growing up this is what I watched and learned from! I would love for you to continue this series!
"I didn't really know where to study magic"
Hogwarts... Duh.
Underrated comment!
Love your stuff Chris!...the one with the card in the officer's shoe, the reason he was worried, was that it's against their policy pretty much anywhere in the country, to remove any portion of their uniform, unless it's an emergency situation, especially their shoes!
Not knowing David Blaine, is like not knowing Nirvana :-|
whos nirvana
Whats nirvana
Vintage David is the best I used to binge the old specials on Netflix when they were on there
Completely random fact:
In 2017 more people were killed from injuries caused by taking a selfie than by shark attacks.
Well that doesn't seem fun...
That's because deaths by shark attacks are actually quite rare. Whereas idiots with a smartphone are everywhere.
I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s the case every year. Like someone else said, shark attacks are extremely rare but there are lots of dumb people with phones.
Only 5 of the 88 shark attacks in 2017 were fatal. That leaves a lot of room for selfie deaths.
That David history montage thing was great. I loved how you did that!
That wouldn't be smart if he cared about the industry. So others can learn and keep the legacy alive.
@@GodofLovers Is there not value for the industry to let old tricks be revealed and force magicians to be creative? You can 100% know the trick and still be impressed if it's done well. This YT video is proof.
Love David he was the first magician I ever saw on tv the same videos you showed inspired me to start magic
Can't help it but I feel that the editing is just crossing the line, what's next, postproduction CGI?
Nah, that's Criss Angel
Editing is a huge part of his "tricks"
that's the problem. Once you know there's SOME editing it might as well ALL be.
Thanks Chris, awesome video as ever. P.S. That floor is looking so good.
Don't compare David Blaine to Mr beast... thats just an insult to David.
lol how can you compare a loser that plays video games all day to a man that has perfected his craft. But yeah cant compare
@@techfreak111 lmao that "loser" has donated and given out thousands to shelters, people in need, helped plant 20 million tress and is one of the most successful youtubers and is only 21? Tf have you done?
@@jase7722 yeah I would do the same to avoid paying paying taxes at the end of the year get out of here with that small brain thinking lmao stay woke baby boy.
@@techfreak111 Are you really that pissed off because you're poor? Mr Beast living the dream while you make fun of him on youtube. Sucks to be you loser
This is probably my favorite video you've done in a while and I'd love to see more like this!!
I used to pull the head off the chicken. Then I got a girlfriend.
I did it with a fruit bat to get my girlfriend , a nice woman named Sharron btw 😁
You just dated yourself by saying “the TH-cam”
The knife through the menu stabbing the spectators card was a really good one, he messed up the nerves in his pinky during that moment. You see blood from his hand at the end of the video. That is commitment and that's what makes magic real to me. He's a true artist.
Legit cops when they were legit.
Side note: It's included in the legality of a cop being out of uniform on patrol. Yes, even a shoe.
I am 13 and i started watching David blaine when i was 4 and he is the reason i started doing magic
Who's here early??
meeeeee
Me
Man I remember all of these videos. This is what got me into magic in high school. I dont do magic anymore outside of a few little things I can show off and I still feel comfortable holding a deck of cards and manipulating it but man this takes me back
How does someone not know David Blaine??? In 16 and this man was my idol growing up
Thank you for this. Been wondering if anyone like you would review David Blaines old videos.
When i first saw david blaine do his version of the Ambitious Card routine, thats when i fell in love with card tricks. And to this day, thats still my favorite routine.
I remember growing up we got a copy of David Blaine Street Magic from like a $5 walmart bin, and that started my love of magic! Can't tell you how many times I watched that!
This was great to watch because I too found out about David Blaine about 20yrs ago when I was 12 and I had the same reactions then as I do now! Thanks for some of those flashbacks, I'm gunna go fondle some cards now 😂
I'm one of your younger viewers and I can tell you david blaine definitely influenced me as well to be a magician. My favorite magician before I saw some of the talents of shin lim and others still can't deny him being in the top. Amazing magician hard to believe you are actually into magic but don't know David Blaine.
I always loved the close up magic, I was never a fan of the stunts they never attracted me to the performances.
At 1:35 that isn't a picture of David Blaine. It's comedian Mitch Silpa who does very funny parodies of David Blaine! Here's a sample of one, if you want to
see it: th-cam.com/video/AYxu_MQSTTY/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=ThoseLilRabbits
I've seen Mitch Silpa's series of David Blain parodies. They were hilarious!!
Hey Chris,
just wanted to say a huuuuge thank you!
Your Videos never dissappoint and literally are the Highlight of my day!
Gonna buy the hell Out of your Mercha as soon as my financial Situation recovers from covid ^^
Greetings from Germany
My first experience of David Blaine was seeing a TH-cam video from like 6 + years ago called Real or Magic and I was hooked. In fact I stumbled upon Chris Ramsey’s channel because of a related suggestion last year
