My books for adults include The Beginning of the World in the Middle of the Night, The Girl Aquarium, The Bookshop Book, and The Sunday Times bestselling Weird Things Customers Say in Bookshops series. My picture book trilogy Franklin and Luna, and my middle-grade book The Sister Who Ate Her Brothers, are published by Thames & Hudson.
I've won both an Eric Gregory Award and the Jane Martin Poetry Prize, my books have been translated into twenty languages, and I have two new titles forthcoming in 2023 - more details on those soon.
I've worked in the publishing industry for over fifteen years, initially as a bookseller, and now as a freelance editor, content creator and disability advocate. I review books online, in print and on the radio. I run a TH-cam channel where I talk about books, the history of fairy tales, and the representation of disability and disfigurement. I also offer online writing workshops and editorial services, give talks at schools, publishing companies, universities and book festivals on a variety of topics, and I run a book club for TOAST clothing.

Evening, folks! I hope you had a good reading year. Happy new year to you all. xx
Congratulations to you and Mr. M on 17 years!
Thanks 😊
I love how you arrange the wig, it's becoming on you and original
'still missing' now on my tbr...i think you look very good in that wig in that style...congrats on the 17 years..that's great...and happy new year to you and yours jen.
Would you ever consider doing a reading vlog in which you focused on Canadian authors? I know one of my goals for the year is to read a little bit more fiction from my neck of the woods. I think I may participate in the reading across Canada read along that's happening throughout 2023. That way I can read fiction from different provinces and territories. Other than that I hope you had a happy holiday and that you and your husband had a great time on your anniversary. Lots of bookish love always and may 2023 be good to you.
I've often thought about doing a vlog reading the Giller Prize longlist or shortlist :) one of these days! x
@@jenvcampbell the Canada Reads for 2022 happened 9 months ago there should be another one in the next couple of months. Five Canadians defend five books in a debate that lasts 5 days and they pick the top Canada Reed for the year. Every year there's a different theme and The Debaters are asked to choose the one book that Canadians need to read. It's a pretty big deal in Canada it's broadcast on CBS. That would be a good Vlog if you're interested and they usually choose pretty good books.
If you're looking for Canadian reads, then look up Lindy's magpie reads. She reads a lot of Canadian authors and also engages with the Giller Prize (predicting which books might be on it among other things).
Oh that is fantastic that half your books were from small publishers!! The things I track/care the most about are indie/small publishers and translated things. Hope you are having a great start to the year!!
I'm so glad you mentioned Maps of Our Spectacular Bodies and Ghost Music: both were in my top 5 reads of the year, and new all-time favourites. Maddie Mortimer did something so special with that Maps of Our Spectacular Bodies and it's insane to me that that's her debut. Hats off.
I really enjoy these statistical wrap ups. I was surprised to discover that I only read nine books less than you did, but a few thousand pages more. It's not a competition, just interesting in the sense of how we (I) perceive other readers and our own reading. People often dismiss their own reading to me because I read so much more than they do, but I'm older and blessed with circumstances that allows me to read this much, and I am enjoying the luxury. When I was younger, I still read a lot, but in different formats, and certainly not as many books. I was pleasantly surprised to find that my reading this year was more diverse than I thought it would be, and I had a great number of favorites, as well as a solid middle of books that didn't make my "favorites" (because, as you say, they can't all), but were still enjoyable and recommendable. My goal for 2023 is to read whatever I feel like reading. A lot of my mental health self care since the start of the pandemic has been adding books to my shelves, so I very much want to read more FROM my shelves this year. It's tough when my library has such excellent taste and brings in so many new and anticipated books. I also have a vague idea of catching up on series I'm in the middle of, but we shall see. Aside from books, I wanted to mention that I liked the sort of messy cuteness of your wig. Then my hubby walked by as I was watching you and paused to mention how how much he liked your hairstyle. So there you have it.
Happy and healthy new year 🎉 and belated happy anniversary. Personally I love the hair ❤
It’s been sweet to see your beautiful natural hair, but you are darn cute in this wig & scarf wrap too! Excellent wrap of year end reading too. Now I’m all intrigued about Still Missing and have ordered it from the library. 🕵️♀️
One of my favorites of the year is another book by Claudia Piñero called Catedrales. I read it in the original Spanish and it hasn't been translated into English yet, but once it does get translated I think you'd love it!
Fingers crossed it gets translated soon. I've got All Yours by her on my TBR at the moment and hoping to enjoy that. x
@Jen Campbell oh I also read that one (called Tuya in Spanish) I found it to be... interesting and maybe a bit polemic. I also hope you love it, but if you don't, don't give up on her stuff!! She sometimes misses, but when she hits, she HITS.
I especially love the stats at the end. They are so fun!
And as someone who also has a disability, just seeing you have no reading during May and September just makes me feel seen. I often beat myself up for not being able to be consistent so seeing you do as well because of health eases it. ❤️❤️❤️ Happy New Year
I love the stats too! Your videos help diversify my reading so much and I wish you only the very best in 2023 xxx
Just got home from the bookstore as I was absolutely compelled to purchase Our Wives Under the Sea per your recommendation. Thank god I missed this video before I went! 😅Your recommendations are some of my favorites Jen! Thank you. You have a gift.
I hope you like it! x
Happy New Year to you! My reading year was short, only beginning 2 months ago when i canceled tv 😃, but I read some super books like Hamnet, Piranesi, Never Let Me Go, and many others! So, am thrilled to be reading again, looking forward to full year! Thank you hugely~~~am getting good recs from you & thoroughly enjoy your vids. 🎉📚
I read All My Puny Sorrows probably 5 years ago and I STILL feel broken by it but I did love it so much 😭🥰 thank you for this sweet one- lots to add to the list! 💚
Also that wig is a stunner as are youuuu ☺️
All amazing things to you in 2023 💕 You are looking wonderful and inspire me to put a bit of effort into things-home decor & appearance! Thanks for all the readings recs & the winter walks in your last one. Be well.
I did not know that the ending of Vladimir is a play on Jane Eyre! I love it so much more now
Hi Jen! I asked about your most read author, and at first I was surprised by your answer (that outside of series, there were only a couple authors, and only 2 books from them) but I guess it does make sense with your 70%+ of new releases for the year. I also looked at my own reading, and while I did have 17 authors I read 2+ books from this year, more of them were series than I expected, only because I don’t think of myself as reading genres with common series. Still, I suppose it’s more likely to be the case that you might read the same author multiple times but over a span of many years as their books come out rather than working your way through a backlist. Thanks for sharing your statistics! 💜
love the stats at the end! i also recorded all the books i acquired this year, mine was 125?!?! mainly from gifts or £1 books from charity shops but it's still so many, my poor bookshelves 😅
hope you had a lovely christmas and wishing you a wonderful year ahead 💕
Thank you for the past year, I have tremondously enjoyed your content throughout it
Ah yes, I knew that but accidentally copied the language over into country, thanks ☺️ x
Congratulations on your anniversary. The wig looks lovely. ❤
Happy New Year Jen ☺️ always interested in your reading stats and looking forward to your favourites video soon! I was really intrigued by the comparison of amount of books with amount of pages, I need to look at this ☺️
I'm currently reading Imaginary Friend by Stephen Chobsky and it's pleasantly surprised me by how much I'm enjoying it despite its 700 something pages.
In 2023 and I want to dip in and out of all the fairy tale/folklore collections that seem to be breeding in my house 👀 sending you love and light xx
Nobody ever does Worst Books of the year. So, once again, Jen, you’re ahead of the game and I have to watch 💕❤️💕
Happy new year, Jen!!! Hope your 2023 will be filled with joy, success, good health, and all the best life has to offer (including plenty more fantastic reads)! I set myself a goal of reading 44 books in 2022 and ended up reading 51. Following your channel has helped push me out of my reading comfort zone and pick up books I wouldn’t have had on my radar, which has been fantastic! I’ve definitely got my favorite genres down but like having many different options available depending on my mood & brain capacity at any given time. 😉 Thanks for all the wonderful content you create 💕 and your own beautiful books!
Happy new year Jen! Congrats on the anniversary!
Now I'm going to prepare breakfast for tomorrow while listening to this video. Starting work again after having a week off, so preparing breakfast will hopefully ease me in.
I hope 2023 will be a good wonderful (reading) year for you!
I hope tomorrow goes well, and wishing you a happy new year. xx
I love stats, so interesting 😊 storygraph is so good, especially the level of detail it gives.
I wait with anticipation for your favourites as no doubt I'll end up reading several 😊 xx
Happy anniversary! I liked your hair today. I liked your reviews. I only read 6 books this year. Spent most of my time reading fanfiction. In 2023 I'm hoping to start again on my tbr piles.
Happy New Year Jen! Good to see all the stats, you've done well. 🙂
Happy new year, Nola x
@@jenvcampbell , thankyou!
Happy Anniversary and thank youuu for all the awesome reviews and recommendations. 💚
My favourite Naomi booth so far is Sealed but I do still have exit management to go 😀
You look so pretty with that hair color!!!! Happy Anniversary🎉
Happy New Year, Jen & Mr. M! Glad for the reminder about A Helping Hand. I am interested in The Appeal, but don't know if it will do well with me because too much complexity in a mystery just confuses me. I love the idea of keeping track of how many books come in during a year. I just started StoryGraph. Do you record audiobooks as minutes or pages? I'm not sure what to choose. Looking forward to your Best of 2022.
I'm not actually sure, let me check... * checks * Apparently, I have it down as pages ☺ x
I got Vladimir by Julia May Jones for Christmas so am doubly excited to get to it now that you approve of it. I also got The Beauty by Alia Whitling for Chrimbo after you said you loved it (i think). The Neapolitan Quartet by Elena Ferrante was one of my favourite reads this year. And i didn't set any reading goals last yr and haven't for this one either.
Happy Anniversary! Happy New Year!
I was painting my nails when I watched this, looked up when I was done and I think I put on the same colour as your nails hahah!
It’s Essie Playdate ☺️
@@jenvcampbell Yesss that's what I was applying! Haha so funny
Hi Jen! Based on all your stats, I think you would really like the work by Lygia Fagundes Telles, who is a Brazilian author. I have no idea if translation of her work is easy to find in the UK though
Elena Knows was the book that made me cry last year. Yup! 😂
It certainly gets you in the feels. x
Thanks Jen, amazingly interesting as usual.
A happy and healthy new year to you. Thank you for your content, always informative and entertaining 🌻
Happy New Year! I feel inspired by your stats. I'm going to challenge myself to pay attention to reading more widely in regards to geography and time.
I had a SHOCKING reading year. According to my Storygraph 2022 Wrap Up, my average star rating was something like 2.4, with my highest rated book all year being only 3.5 stars. But it already looks like 2023 might be a different story. I finished my first book of the year last night and it's a rare 5 stars from me! I'm also currently in the middle of two other books which I'm LOVING so far. One of them is Woman, Eating, which I heard about through your channel, and the other is When The Whales Leave by Yuri Rytkheu (trans. Ilona Yazhbin Chavasse) which I think you may like, especially if you're still in the mood for a wintery setting.
I hope this year is a much better reading year for you ♥️ x
Happy New Year, Jen!
Happy new year to you, Priscilla x
Happy New Year🤗 Loved your book recommendations and added some to my reading list for 2023💕
Always enjoy these wrap up videos and there is always a book or three to add to my tbr. Looking at these stats I wonder if you keep all the books you read throughtout the year. Do you donate or resell a few? (Especially the ones you don't like.)
I don't resell but I gift to neighbours, putting a box of books out every so often. I'm the book fairy on my street, ha. x
Really enjoyed 😊
Thanks, Hayley x
I’m definitely getting “Still Missing” , I watched Dahmer over the holly days and I would like another look at a discussion about Institutional bias agains queer people, but hopefully without the weird taste of fetishism the series left.
If you’re interested in some books in translation recommendations I would point out:
• We all loved cowboys; by Carol Bensimo (translation by Beth Fowler)
• Amora: Stories; by Natalia Borges Polesso (translated by Julia Sanches)
Both about lesbian protagonists
• The Chandelier; by Clarice Lispector (translated by Benjamin Moser and Magdalena Edwards)
Happy new year :) I really enjoy your vlogs
How do you record your audiobooks on story graph so that you can see the difference from regular books?
You can set your audiobook preference to record audiobooks as minutes instead of pages. Then, when you select a book to read, click 'choose different edition' and make sure you select the audiobook version.x
I'm also a fan of Books Unbound podcast. :) Could you maybe suggest other bookish podcasts similar to Books Unbound? :)
You might enjoy What Page Are You On? ☺️
@@jenvcampbell thank you, I will check it ❤
I wonder if the reading stats include DNFed books or just books you actually finished? I know some people count DNFed books as ”read”, for me personally I only count the books I finished as read.
I think there were four books in that list of 165 that I DNFed more than half way through, and any other DNFs didn’t count in that number.
I know we should be able to enjoy a book with only the context it is given to us. But I just wanted to tell you that when reading Mariana Enriquez we need to consider Argentina's context, because her writing is really charged with references to the immense amount of gendered violence and poverty of the country. It really hits different as a woman who lives that as her everyday life. Ps. Love your videos and books
I did read it knowing that context but we’re all going to enjoy different things, that’s the beauty of books. I much prefer Claudia Pineiro’s writing on those topics, for instance, and Elena Knows is my favourite book of the year. I’m also keen to get to Dolores Reyes and Selva Almada whose books are on my shelf. x
@@jenvcampbell I think Dolores would be right up your alley, she's got hints of magical realism and it's just great.
@@ciinthiamk Fabulous :)
I read 121 books in 2022. 73% by women. I didn't identify any non binary writers, so that's something to look out for. 79% fiction and 21% non fiction which is fairly similar to last year. 7.5% of the fiction was translated fiction. I am Australian and try to read a decent amount of Aussie fiction but was down this year from 21 in 2021 to 16 in 2022. Another area to keep an eye on this year. Also I did not like I want to die...tteokbokki either, it felt very one dimensional and would have been a better experience for me if the writer wrote more commentary around how the sessions helped her change her views and behaviours or what light bulb moments she had or similar. Therapeutic work mostly takes place away from the sessions. Anyway that's quite a long comment. Happy New Year Jen and Mr M and Lola.
