Of course, so happy you enjoyed it! As an aside, I'm glad you became a patron when you did, as the timing worked out so that I could add your name to the credits! I had an older, unlisted version of this video I was about to release last week, but then kenisu offered to draw some panels so I opted to take down, tweak & re-upload this updated version 😁
This is crazy to me how this is actually real, I mean, come on! History is being restored!
I've been fascinated with the topic of game preservation and anything related to it recently (especially EarthBound of course), so I wanted to help spread the news about these overlooked novels being finished and how significant their release truly is!
I never heard of this Novel and my body is ready to consume this newly discovered Mother content. Thank you very much as always Thane!

The Mother Novels weren't as discussed in the past because they didn't get a proper translation until recently, when Nyasu Nekoban stepped in.
I'm super grateful to them.
The novels are interesting on their own, and I was already familiar with the author from her Dragon Quest works.

i rarely comment under videos (if ever), but am so glad that someone's finally talking about these novelizations! i remember reading Mato's snippets that made it to earthbound central back in the day, so it was pretty astounding to hear they'd finally been fully translated in 2021!
for better or worse, i haven't been able to stop thinking about the earthbound one (haven't gotten around to reading mom 1's, but that's definitely in the cards sometime soon) since i finished it back in march! there's a lot to love/that i think the novel got right and am super willing to adopt into my personal readings of each character, but there's just as much... not very quirky weirdness in there i'm not crazy about :\
regardless, i'm grateful they've been translated and made super accessible for the sake of preservation, really speaks to how passionate fans still are about these silly little games so long after they've been out! (+and i'm looking forward to more discussions about the novels' contents specifically!) 😊
the earthbound novel is insane, its lighthearted for the most part, but around the end it gets super dark. just like most mother games lol
Only Itoi can retcon the past into the good timeline

I'd like to see a third Mother novel attempt too! I think Saori Kumi had the right idea in wanting to explore Claus' side of the story more, there's lots of potential there to *MOTHER 3 SPOILERS*
...elaborate on both what he endures while seperated from his family, and the inner-workings of the Chimera Lab/Pigmask Army. I'd love as much information about the villains as possible, from Fassad's days as a Magypsy to King P's arrival on the Nowhere Islands
i just started reading the novels and i was a bit upset no one seems to talk about them. excited for the second video on these things!!
For sure! I do hope more people check them out, there is some absolutely mindblowing stuff that happens in each 😅 in the meantime (while I'm working on that video), if there's anything that stands out to you as you're reading the novels, feel free to reach out on here! Good to see someone covering this topic. My dissatisfaction with seeing nothing related to the novels (at least M1 because for worldbuilding reasons, that is my most favorite game of the series) actually spurned me to take my own hand in translating the novel, but the rollercoaster of reality reared its head in the worst times and I eventually lost interest in the project after having a rough draft completed.
Now the only thing that is left is a polished chapter 1, a handful of notes I exchange with a confidant of mine, and a little statement I had written intending to distribute alongside the finished work.
edit: whoooooa, major typo (a "something" that was present should have been "nothing" instead). I swatted it out, but I do not know how this flew over my head when I initially wrote this

They're super good, too. I really love the novel based on EarthBound in particular--every character is given more of a backstory and the author did an incredible job at keeping the game's flavor! There's a reason Shigesato Itoi approved & attached his name to these books 😁

They're certainly worth a read! Much like the games, you don't need to read the first one to jump into the second--so you can start with whichever looks more interesting to you!
I can’t wait until someone makes physical English translations of the novels
Oh! One more thing, should I read the 1st or 2nd book first, I know the games can be played in any order but I’m not sure about the books
@@WillowFaded it doesn't matter! I read the second book first, and there is little overlap between them (much like the games themselves). I too would love a physical copy 😅

It's been a while since this video has come out, but would you happen to remember if you commissioned kenisu to make those illustrations or if he elected to make them free of charge?
He actually came up with the idea, and offered to do them for free! I showed him an early draft of the video using some of his older illustrations, and he suggested that he draw some new art for his segment.
Its a shame its mostly people passionate about japanese and the game itself who would do this not nitendo

I was hoping someone would ask 😅 that's from Gintama, episode 274 (you can watch it for free with ads right now on Crunchyroll). It's crazy--they parody the first game's ad and it lasts for several minutes. It's based on chapter 416 of the manga

Yes they are, especially the ending of the second book! I personally think it's the right type of weird, considering the source material 😅 you're right though, even by the games' standards these are some strange stories.
They are coming from the game where you fight a pile of puke by distracting it with honey.
