Range and voice type are 2 different things. Trust me, I've gone back and forth over Brandy. Even tho her range reaches a little lower and she belts in a mixed voice, not a true head voice, she does not have the voice of a mezzo. She doesn't. Her voice fades, doesn't have the roundness and presence all mezzos have. The sound also gets lost in her lower register, that's a tell tale sign of a lyrics soprano. She would sing with the 2nd sopranos in a choir, not the altos. U wouldn't be able to hear her

Her rasp and agility come from her singing off-voice, in a sort of mix. I can see how that might make you think she’s a lyric soprano singing low in her range, but her tessitura would have to be from middle C to D6... No way middle C is the bottom of her range.

Her vocal arrangements, especially when she harmonizes on certain words or phrases sounds like surround sound and its just her voice. Her musical ears blow me away. All of the stuff that she hears in her head and records in those backgrounds is just out of this world. Everyone started doing that and when autotune came out, artists in r&b and hip hop especially began duplicating her signature sound that she had from stacking her vocals.
