    I watched the video on Michael Jackson's voice the other week & now that I've seen this one, I noticed they're opposites in how their voices were used in childhood. MJ sang high & loud as a child when he probably should not have been. Brandy was not forced to push her voice in that direction as a child. Therefore, her voice was preserved over the years. She changed the sound of music and vocal production along with Rodney and inspired a generation of not just singers but entertainers also. People reference her as a crossover act, someone who could do it all. Sing, act, dance. People without the ear don’t understand but she is in a class all of her own and so many others wouldn’t exist without her. She is truly THE VOCAL BIBLE!

    Thank you for this breakdown. Brandy voice has always been hard for me to explain to anyone. Her tone and the way she intentionally hits notes can confuse the ear lol. Brandy’s secret weapon aside from her voice is her hearing and musicality. Her voice range is limited but you can def tell she can hear what others can’t and she’s a musician with her voice. I have always loved her tone and vocal layering in the studio! She’s so good.

    • @TheSeeking2know
      @TheSeeking2know 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +12

      @@micahchukwudi5207 I wouldn't say her range is "limited" in that absolute sense, but rather that she didn't sing/train to blend and use the entirety of it, especially the head voice, since it wasn't needed for her expressive sensibilities. That's the difference. She was musical within the mid-to-low range and confidently stretched lower than one would expect.

    • @TheSeeking2know

      @@micahchukwudi5207 You're not wrong. There was one clip repeated in this video where she was hitting the head voice into the 6th octave, but it was a one-off.
      That was my point. She didn't need it for her style of singing. If she wanted to do a lot of belting and intense mixing it would have been helpful (and she had the resources) to get some vocal training.
      Many top singers work with coaches and trainers, so it's not a ding to propose it.

    I think in the 80s Sade along with Anita were very influencial on how being understated can be commercially successful. Toni and Brandy were bourne out of them in the 90s era working with the on trend hit makers ensuring their successes. I would add one song that is ground breaking and influencal which was Chante Moore "Love's Take Over". A pivotal song that is considered a masterpiece that influenced her early work but made for a younger market.

    I am so glad to have grown and belonged to that era where Brandy, Aaliyah, and Monica reigned supreme in the teen music landscape. The more Brandy's voice got strained and airy and metallic sounding (if that's even a word), the more I admire her vocal prowess. 👏👏👏

    Very smart commentary.
    A lot of the “layering” Brandy did was influenced by some of her predecessors such as Mariah: ballads on Emotions; “Underneath the Stars” on Daydream; and “The Roof” and “4th of July” on Butterfly, all of which used cascading vocals in light, soft layers.

    • @CassieJazz96
      @CassieJazz96 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      Yesssss!!! You can definitely hear Mariah's influence in Brandy's work. That's why I was so excited when they collaborated for a new version of "The Roof" a few years ago!

      @SoSillyWilly26 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +18

      Respectfully, while Mariah is one her influences, Brandy grew up in an acapella church and her father taught her how to harmonize. Not taking any credit from Mariah but that ear was well trained before Mariah’s debut in 1990 😂

      Brandy’s background vocals are also inspired by Micheal & Janet Jackson. She has said as much. She pulls from many different legends. Her voice is also NATURALLY lower, deeper, huskier, smokier and raspier than Mariah’s. They both share the airy quality. Brandy’s runs also sound more Black American Church. Both are inspiring.

    I think musically it's also how she uses her instrument. It's not just that she does runs because, for example, Xtina does runs all the time but with B I feel like it's her choices, her arrangements, and her harmonies her timing, her execution it all tells a story it feels true to the song which sometimes gets lost when people do more with the song. Like Gladys Anita Brandy and Toni, even lalah to me, sound signature because whatever song they sing, they maintain their sound

    Interesting that you mentioned Faith Evans cause Faith even said that Brandy is her favorite voice of the 90s era. I love Faith Evans and Brandy. My favorite singers from the 90s are Toni Braxton, Tamia, Brandy, Mariah Carey, and Faith Evans. So happy that you did one on Brandy. Wouldn't mind to see one on Faith cause to me as she got older she got better as well. I love Monica too. Georgia native love her.

    I play instruments and love to sing, as well. I did music as a subject all the way to matric. When we had to choose which instruments would be suitable for us to play, I was pointed in the direction of the clarinet and the trombone because of my lip structure. It has blown my mind that my neck structure might be the reason I'm a soprano! I would love to see more literature and history on the link between singing and our bodies, thanks very much for this video.
    PS: I'd always wondered why she was called the vocal Bible as well. This video explains that.

    The vocal bible! I love a true Contralto and wow at Brandy singing a 3rd below Toni and Anita. I always love how agile her voice was and how she used her low placed voice in a manner most at the time werent use to hearing. Her tone is airy and lyrical yet she can riff in the basement. Full Moon revolutionized Pop female vocals! Great video🎉

    This is excellent work brother. I clicked on this expecting something completely different. This has a level of quality equivalent to a course. You're covering techniques and how performers think about composition and performance. In a way that's accessible and not overly complicated. Just enough theory to highlight the skill involved. In a way that the artists would probably describe the process themselves. Thank you for this quality work and treating black music music with the respect it deserves.

    Excellent review of Brandy's voice!
    I like₫ the fact that you took the time to contrast her voice with Toni Braxton/Anita Baker and then Gladys Knight, and the different ways they use their voice, and also how Brandy influenced many of the R&B vocalists vocally and aesthetically. The point about singing in a range that is comfortable for males to cover in-key is also something I wouldn't have thought about.
    You and your team are real vocal nerds, which is great!
    Your analysis videos on individual end up being the definitive TH-cam documentaries on their vocals (and sometimes intersection with the rest of their lives, a la Whitney).
