- How to fix an OLD Echo chainsaw that will not run. Steve is going to attempt to get this OLD Echo 550EVL powersaw running again. Can he do it? He is going to check out this chainsaw by performing the 3 standard tests - adequate spark, compression and fuel supply.

I personally love Echo products, especially old echo. I have that exact model and have used it for many years. Probably will be buying one of those ethanol carb kits for it to.

I have the 440evl but everytime I look for parts Google gives me results for the newer CS-440EVL.

They made a twin cylinder version for a short time. I think it was about 65cc. Very rare. Like butter.
My dads had a 452vl for over 30 years. Its been a dang good saw... recently was given a 462 stihl. I prefer that to the old echo, but she still cuts as good as she did 30 years ago
Got the same exact saw. Purchased new 10/22/1987 for $428.xx. It was a great saw for 20+ years. Been sitting up since hurricane Gustav. Just got hammered this year by hurricane Ida. Couldn't start it. In the past the trick was always to clean or replace spark plug. Never stored it with gas. After watching your video, I put a kit in it, and adjusted carb per your suggestion. It cranked on first pull and runs like a top. Super pleased! Thanks.

An uncle of mine gave me that exact chainsaw. He got it without blade and chain from someone else and left it rusting and rotting in a shed for years. After he gave it to me, I tore it apart, cleaned it, installed an Oregon blade and chain... and it's been running great ever since. (Even though I'm certainly no mechanic.) I use it for rough work in S&M (sand & muck ;) ) and despite all of the abuse I put it through it's keeps purring like a kitten (like the one in your video). This bad-ass hasn't let me down once since I got it :)

I have a Echo 400 EVL that I used to earn a living with in the early 1980s. Spent hundreds of hours operating it. Now, It almost starts, but hasn't run for maybe 5 years. I put it up on the work bench and followed along with your video. Like yours, it needs a rebuilt carburetor. I have project where I need it in the next two weeks, so it is time to get serious about getting it running again. BTW, back in 1982, I shopped for this saw by going to all the local saw and small engine repair shops and asked them which of the hottest selling saws, they repaired the least. Every single one of them said "Echo". I have owned it for 38 years now. It was rebuilt around 1992, but nothing since. Thank you so much for your video!! Now to find a rebuild kit for a 38 year old saw!

@@StevesSmallEngineSaloon Followed your instructions with the rebuild kit, and the thing still wouldn't start. Went through it all again. Then, stupid me took the time to smell the gas. Rookie mistake. Mixed fresh non-ethanol. A shot of carb cleaner to get it in motion and it started up using the fresh gas! The 38-year-old saw is back in business. I will be trimming an elm at the first place I ever worked. Funny how life goes in circles. Thank you!
Great video. I have a 440EVL my father gave me years ago. It runs perfectly. He used to sell and repair these old Echo saws (as well as Homelite & Partner). I still have some of his old (new) parts for these.
Found a Kioritz Echo CS-302 in someones garbage while walking my dog one day. The pull cord was hanging out. Took it home, repaired the cord and put some gas with stabilizer in it. Started after a few pulls and works like a charm. It does have a bit of an attitude when starting so I'm going to replace the diaphragms like you did Steve. It should be good for another forty years!
She's a beauty Aaa! Steve after your comment on " look we can see right there that the oiler is working" made me think about that for a minute and I was thinking what type of pumping system is utilized to do this and how does it operate off of the engine. So that has me wondering if you have a video on Oilers and their adjustment and repair and operation. Like how do they set them for correct flow? Not to little, not to much. I think it would be an interesting and useful video. This was a great video. Thank you.

I was given 2 ECHO chain saws 1 a Echo 330 EVL and the other also is a Echo CS 3450 TYPE 1-E 33.4cc by Korste Corp...both have fuel leak issues and I will be taking it apart first to remedy the fuel leak issue and will also look into the carburetor just as you showed to make sure I replace the diaphragm and gasket and new fuel and see if that would be the issue with these gifted ECHO 's in the Aloha State called Hawaii...I will bring you my results...TY
I remember my friend saying 26 years ago when his stihl 028 was wearing , that his next saw was going to be a Echo. I can see why. Good restore Steve!
I used to go from drop start to kick start then to throw start. Now I go straight to the saloon. Thank you

Hey BIG Steve I have the exact same saw with a longer blade. This was my very first saw that my mother bought me for Christmas many many years ago
and it's still going strong.Never ever let me down a real thumper !!! I left this once for approx 2 years in the shed a tree surgeon was working at my place when his saw
broke He asked me if i had a saw he could use just to finish off. All i had at the time was the old echo that had been stood for 2/3 years. Any way in the shed
out with the saw same old fuel and yep it started 6 pulls if i recall. No one believes me when i mention this story but it's true. Now most of my equipment is Echo
they just never let me down..Great Vid as always !!!!!!!!
Awesome old saw Steve. Good on ya for laying off the suds a half day and wearing your PPE. Very good to see. I fixed a Echo CS 341 top handle saw that just wouldn’t start. They have notoriously sensitive carbs and I checked it by squirting gas in the spark plug hole (I like your method better). I rebuilt it, squirted it with carb cleaner and gave it a ride in the ultrasonic bath. No dice! Customer said he been cutting palm trees with it and they produce a really fine saw dust. Hopped on Amazon and $10 later and free shipping I put on a Chinesium carb and Bob’s your uncle she fired right up!

Me too, got it from my late father-in-law nearly 30yrs ago. The clutch drum has only just failed. My local Echo dealer here in Australia informs me spare parts are not available for this model anymore because of its age.

I have like 3 echo CS 300s and one 3000. Most are parts saws but the 300 I just got done putting a new carb kit on. 20 bucks and all new fuel system and plug. 1 pull choked and 1 off and in action again. Can't beat it. Echo does make quality.
Nice video Mr. Steve. I have a McCulloch 3214 chainsaw that’s 26 years old. My wife bought it for me new as a surprise gift. Just replaced the gas lines, purge bulb, spark plug and carb kit installed. Runs like new again. Still has the original bar and chain. It hasn’t seen a lot of cutting, probably less than five hours total as we don’t have a lot of trees to cut but occasionally a large limb will fall and I will cut it up. The primer bulb went bad probably 10 years ago and watching these videos of yours got me motivated to get it going again. Thanks for all the great vids and tips sir. You are the best!
Great old saw. I have an old Huskavarna that's about the same age or maybe older that I "collected" that I have worked on but now I know so much more about the 2 stroke carbs from watching this video and some of your others that I feel confident that I can get it up and running again. Thanks

I have a 30 year old Echo blower and the only thing I have done is replace the prime bulb. Love Echo products.
Sounds a bit rich but love an echo. The new Echo/Shindaiwa saws are incredible and durable as always.

Awesome stuff. I have a Echo 550ESP, which is very similar to this, but they added the complication of some sort of electronic protection. Mine starts and runs for a bout 5 seconds then conks out. I would suspect the diaphrams are rotten like yours. I'll be getting a maintenance kit and getting this old saw back up and running.

Good show mate, I love old saws mainly thats because their all I own, using them is like riding in an old lincoln town car. Any one of my old saws will outwork this old duffer. I bought an echo like that for 20 bucks started right up but a buddy had to have it.

That lovely old saw starts and runs easier than my (bought under duress - last one in town after a big storm) Tanaka TCS-33, that's for sure. Takes a miracle, an act of Congress, and some dark magic to get my saw started, and has since the day I bought it... Think there's a design flaw resulting in the carb flooding but the cylinder itself not getting any fuel - tilting it forward can sometimes help. Ever seen such a thing?
Great video! I got hold of an old Echo 500EVL with the 50cc engine. Same no start problem you had and I wound up taking apart the carb and cleaning it out and got it running. The owner's manual calls for a 25:1 fuel mix or, 50:1 with a "special" oil approved by Echo. I tried the 25:1 and it ran somewhat sluggish. As expected, it runs much better on 50:1. What fuel mix do you recommend for these old Echos?

I have an old CS500VL and CS650VL they both run perfect and I have cut and fell a butt load with these guys over the years. I bought them new and am using the 500 today. Never been in the shop nor rebuilt. My son has my 650, I am 67 years old and I get my own wood in for the winter. I use a 20 inch bar so I don’t hurt my poor old back LOL. I am going to buy the CS 590 as I would like a new saw. So after watching this video yea these old saws can still stand the test of time. Just like me.

Hey Steve I always love and learn from your video's. You do a fantastic job of explaining the information on the topic your discussion about. I have stihl chainsaw that is over oiling the bar. It just pour out way to fast. The guy that had it before me use to put used motor oil in it instead of bar lube. Is this an easy fix and did putting the used oil cause this problem? Thanks

I had a Echo C's 60 s about 40 years ago, was great, reliable and did the job well. Were they Japanese or what? Used mine. For 8 yrs, then sold it on. Great vid Steve, I always learn something from your vids. Thanks.

I have the 452 same basic saw. It was sized and sat for 18 years.I had to replace the oil line and a carb kit and gas lines.You are able to adjust the idle from the top of the saw. Same for the oil.
My late father in law has a couple of old pioneers under his workbench since I first met him 20 years ago. They don’t run. My next visit to nfld I’m going to utilize this video and see what I can do with them. Wish me luck. 👍

That was fun to watch! Isn't it great getting old power equipment going again! I have a 1972 Snapper mower I am working on. I have the parts for the carb, but I haven't been able to work in my garage for several weeks due to a bad back. Hope to get out there soon and finish it.
Vernon Bruce 1972 snapper isn't that the one that came with a 2 cycle in a magnesium deck, extremely lightweight?
@@daleslover2771 It has a 4 cycle 3.5 Briggs and Stratton. It may be the commercial version, not sure about the deck material. It will run with a bit of persuasion, but it needs a new carb diaphragm, which I have yet to install. It smokes a bit, I am hoping it's just the head gasket and not the bore. I've yet to diagnose that. Not physically able to do the work on it right now.
Vernon Bruce I worked on a snapper it had to be mid-60s in my shop and it had magnesium body to it , it was a two-cycle and I pretty sure was made for little old ladies, the blade was no longer than 18" cutest little lawnmower I ever seen in my life, and wow I have seen a lot of them.

Yeah, like how did the Japanese come up with the brand name 'Echo' rather than 'Sayonara' or 'Chop, chop'.
@@johncollins8304 It goes both ways, to the Japanese too (or for that matter the French, Dutch, Italians) brand names like "John Deer, Coca Cola, Fridgidaire, Buick"etc sound strange, rough, archaic.
As for them choosing "Echo" as a brand name, back in the 1950's when Japanese companies were starting to go global, their marketing depts researched into brand names for the export market. These fitted well with marketing. And so they came up with Brands like "Nissan" Fairlady, Toyota (originally "Toyopet"), "Sharp" etc.
Just for your info, Japan is the No1 nation in the world in quality metal work, plus other production like machine tools, electronics, aerospace, land, sea and air transport etc. That TV or computer that you are using is Chinese made but its major internals are Japanese.

My first serious saw was an Echo 702EVL. Great power and reliability. The weak point of that design was the chain oiler. It threaded into the crankcase and ran off a lobe on the crank. Over time the backlash in those threads would cause the thread to fail and even if you put a helicoil in it you would have an air leak. I really loved that saw. Same happened to others I had.

Loved the Echos of the mid 80s. Dad had a smaller model very similar to this one in the video. I wanna say it was a 3hundred something VL. The problem we often had was that the fuel line would get hard where it laid near the cylinder.

Steve I had a professional 602 eco compression release, wonderful saw. Used a chisel chain an it really could process the wood.

One thing you should have mentioned, (for DIY'ers) was to check for bad fuel lines ---- bad lines can go undetected by "newbies". Good video 😁👍🇺🇸✝️
I have --what you had to do--to do. CS360T. Had not ran in years so I looked at the piston as best as possible for scoring=none. Examined muffler for screen gunk. Sprayed light oil into piston cylinder and replaced spark plug. I did that because it pulled very hard but got better after lubrication. Started for a second on starting fluid..........
Steve: I don't run any gas with ethanol on any of my small engine yard tools. But would gas with ethanol destroy the fuel lines on an old saw like your Echo? I really j=enjoy your videos, and you've saved me quite a bit of money by showing me how to fix and tune my own equipment. Thank You!
Yes, alcohol in fuels will even degrade aluminum when it gets old. It gets all gummy as well

Great vid. Got an old evil 440 in the shed that I refer to friends as my Harley of chainsaws due to it's low rpm and high torque. It's a really good feeling picking up and using the old girl. Makes you appreciate where chainsaws have come from. Have 2 beers tomorrow!!

Those old echos are fantastic saws. I think at last count I have 4, one that is really rare with an anti theft pin key that can't be bypassed. Remove the key and the saw won't run. Fitted from factory.

Yes, that's correct. I think I saw a lot more John Deere saws than Echo. Back then every Deere dealer was selling them.

That's funny, I just saw this video after I got an "old" Echo cleaned and started. Good work on your Echo which outdates mine by quite a few years! Yours is cleaner than my "dirtier than dirt" CS-3400.

I've been looking online the model nr. With no success, but i think it's from the 70's or something. Made in Sweden is all i know and it's a small one,doesn't have a chain stop. Initially i thought i solved the issues with the carb gaskets, but it turned out my fuel lines are compromised ad well. It started, ran perfectly, than suddenly it died. Turned out to be the fuel, more precisely pressure loss in the tank. I looked online for videos about that, but i only got fuel line replacement vids, nothing about this type of pressurised fuel tank and workings of it. It is a lot to ask of you, but it could be a good idea for a video for you, even more so as there are none on youtube. Cheers!
Another great video. I have a dead 650 EVL I am hoping to bring back to life. I have a couple of questions if I may ask. Typically you are dealing with 40 to 1 and 50 to 1 when it comes to fuel mix these days. Is it true that these old saws call for 20 to 1 fuel mix? Regardless, what is the best fuel mix you like to use? Thanks. Dennis.

I have that same model Echo with a 24" bar. Works great. I call it a Man Killer, because of it's weight. But it has never let me down. Thanks for putting this content out. I learned much if I ever have a problem.
