    I related way to hard to the having to learn art part. It's always hard to get into it but an absolute must have skill!

      Indeed! It's tough, but so rewarding :)

    Thanks so much for the inspiration! I'm a female game dev as well and it's been over a year trying to just get started making my game. I started with Unity but now I'm switching to Godot. I signed up for a game jam but was worried about finding the time. I think I need to just stick with it and do them because I think they'll help me a lot.

      I've found that game jams can be such a huge motivation and confidence boost because of all the feedback I can get even if my game isn't great. My first game jam entry was very bad, but people were still friendly and gave me tips. I hope you stick with it and have fun! :)

    Nice devlog. Loved the aesthetic so much ^^
    (For coding I would recommend not to comment out code and delete it entirely. You could use a version control system like Plastic to not loose your old progress. But having commented code makes it harder to work with it again and even harder for other people to read it)

      Thanks! I usually do use a version control system, the code in the video was from an old project I'm not working on anymore :)

      I can't tell you how many times I've resurrected commented-out code... or how many times I had to delete it entirely. IMO leaving it there is best if you aren't publishing your source code.

    I've been wanting to make games for the longest time ever but coding is something that doesn't appeal to me. I'm trying to learn a codeless engine but still find it difficult. I feel dumb because it should be easier but the urge to see my art in a game has me going. You're an inspiration!

    • @PastelPixelsDev
      @PastelPixelsDev  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Aww, thanks so much! I've often felt the same way about art, but holding onto that goal of sharing my games with people keeps me going through the tough parts too :) You can do it!!

      Visual programming doesn't tend to make every task easier. You're doing much the same thing, just entering it in differently, so what is difficult the one way is going to be similarly difficult the other way, especially when you get in to more complex logic. Not saying you should necessarily learn a typed out programming language, but I'd say keep it in mind and that it might not be as bad as one may think, and a lot of times it's much easier to move concepts to another language/environment/engine/whatever, so you don't get trapped with having to stick with one.

      @@Aeduo Thanks I will keep that in mind. Once I'm done with the mini game I'm working on I think I'm going to try scratch.

    Thanks for the encouragement! Was interesting and inspiring to hear your story! I also like to write fiction and wanted to be a game designer as a kid and ride horses 😂 I have learned a lot about game dev and learned how to use unity and godot and unreal…. And have even started a couple small projects but never got far. I’m not good at coding or art so jumping in is a bit scary for me 😟

    So much of my free time i spend making games and similarly I dropped a CS degree for a more general tech degree because it was so much work that wasn't immediately applicable to 90% of the game dev process. Found myself skipping class and taking shortcuts on programming homework so that I could get better at more general game dev skills in that time.

    Great video. Thanks for encouraging others. You are obsoletely correct in that you can learn anything. Many people are afraid of learning and get held back.

    Hey, your pixel cats looks very good. And i understand, GUI is hard... And a little boring :p. In other hand, do you mind try to work with someone else for the jams? Maybe a musician or a generalist to split tasks :D

    what specifically did you do to learn art? i'm in the exact same boat - programmer but the games i want are art dependent

    • @PastelPixelsDev
      @PastelPixelsDev  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When I started learning how to make art for my games, I picked out a single style/medium (pixel art) to focus on and found some good TH-cam videos that covered the basics--not tutorials, but videos about shading, color, and more general principles like that. I also did a lot of game jams, which gave me practice with my art. Examining art from games that I like the style of has also been helpful for learning new techniques. Hope this helps! :)

    I think people need to move away from college spending 200 grand on something you can easily learn for free just isn’t feasible or smart anymore having a house is better
