    No matter how you feel about this song, it's pretty clear that the production here is a great example of leveraging simplicity (the basic chord progression and melodic contour) by peppering in bits of complexity (rhythmic content and color notes).

      Define "trash"... As this video goes into great detail to illustrate, there are things about this song that _are_ in fact great. So it's not "trash", just not your "cup of tea." - It's really worth your time to see and understand the value in things that are not necessarily your preferred tastes.

    • @velhomiguel
      @velhomiguel 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      CortMarshal agree. I wonder if artists in general even know those kind of chords. I’ve been writing music for ten years but never studied music theory. I usually just go with what sounds good, so this is basically “a cool variation of Eb” to me.

    • @liteoner
      @liteoner 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@velhomiguel It's always good to keep in mind that practice always precedes theory. I can guarantee that they didn't write the song thinking "hmm, maybe let's try an add4/6". They were probably just playing around with chords and went with what sounded good.

    I actually really like these pop analysis videos as much if not more than the really complicated well-known rock tracks. It helps me not feel guilty or ashamed for enjoying "simple", "normie' or "commercial" music.
    Edit: I do agree with some of the other commenters in that I would like to see some analysis of similar artists with slightly more musical complexity e.g. deadmau5, Avicii, even some analysis of Hip-Hop production (albeit it is kind of hard to beat Genius when they have the producers themselves analyzing the song)

      Same here. This was the only song that I would pay attention to when it was played on the radio at work. The way the lyrics and vocal melodies played against the music certainly made this song stand out. There is a simple genius in well written 3 chord songs, as the Beatles demonstrated. This (and the one on Max Martin) are among the most helpful/relevant to songwriters hoping to be successful among modern music. I love rock as much as anyone else here but music always moves - you can either move with it or find a niche. That said, DON'T COMPROMISE YOUR OWN MUSIC, but it's a good idea to learn tricks from different genres. Especially the music an average person finds appealing.
    Thanks Rick!

      Abhisek, I'm not thrilled about that trend either but some electronic music is very sophisticated and some is just terrible. Just like any genre - it takes talent to do it well. I don't think rock will come back like it did BUT INSTRUMENTS WILL. People like the energy/unpredictability that synths make possible, but eventually they'll get their fill of it and they'll miss the authenticity and sounds instruments bring. For now though BE SMART ABOUT IT - I think that tying in instruments with modern beats is a great opportunity to be unique/expressive AND appealing.

Artists like Illenium, Seven Lions, and Porter Robinson have some really great stuff that is interesting from a theory and production standpoint, especially Porter Robinson. I love this type of videos.. please, consider trying to analyze something from Deftones.. I love them.. I think they sometimes use some interesting chords.. For example, I love "Rosemary", my latest favorite song of them that made me to love them even more.. it has interesting ending with really heavy 4 single notes in interesting rhytm.. I'm just too excited about that, because it's really simple and somehow it brings so much enjoyment for me.. and outro is simply just beautiful mood change that is just fantastic.. If you would make something about them, I'd be really happy...

    Hey Rick great video! Thanks for breaking this down. Something I noticed is how in the intro and Pre-Chorus they're teasing the chorus and post-chorus/interlude Melody with the filtered vocal samples and bell pad. It's really neat how the hook Melody is hidden throughout the song, used in different instrument parts so it doesn't get incredibly repetitive.

    Great! I love it when the drone sound is playing the tonic (let's say the song is in Ab Major), so that there's an add11 chord on the dominant chord or a minor b13 on the mediant chord anyway! Like playing with open strings on the guitar, when you play in E and then get an Badd11 chord; heavenly!

  • @MindfulProgramming

    Hey I don't love this song, but I appreciate you presenting the great sounds from tons of different creative people. That's why I love your work!
    To the haters: go ask your favorite artists about what popular music they listen to, a LOT of metal musicians draw influence equally from other heavy music as they do country, hip-hop, pop, and electronic music. The point of it all (in my opinion) is learning empathy and altruism. I try to think about what techniques(production, instrumentation, pacing, key signatures, etc.) they use to tell their stories effectively. It is okay to not like this music, but maybe you can learn to understand what makes this song great to other people.
    EDIT: while watching this video for example, I came up with my own little(non-metal) riff on my baritone guitar tuned to F#. Very fun!

    Rick constantly has his hand on the pulse and for that he can see past his own prejudices and personal preferences to appreciate the nuance and cleverness behind modern pop hits. Music is constantly evolving and there is something to appreciate and gain from being open to everything that’s happening. I’m a guitar player and found myself in a rut with approaching the instrument traditionally after many years working in conventional formats yet since delving into the new school of hip hop, rnb and pop driven by soul/gospel and novel approaches to production and value, I’ve been able to overcome that plateau and bring something fresh to my playing. It’s worth it to step outside you comfort zone. Great vid !

  • @AdamANelson
    @AdamANelson 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Rick, I've got a theory that songs like this are actually in their relative Major, despite the fact that they don't ever play the I chord. I'm talking about songs like Justin Bieber's "Sorry", "Tik Tok", "Teenage Dream" (despite its deceptive opening), "Treasure", "Last Friday Night" etc. By intentionally leaving the I chord out, the song sounds like it has a perpetual groove, like it will never end (and neither will the party!) because the tension is never resolved to the I chord. Most pop songs in minor (or more commonly, Dorian) will still have a V (or Vm) - I cadence somewhere (Boulevard of Broken Dreams, Careless Whisper), which tells our ears exactly which chord is the I chord. The above songs don't have this, and ending on the "vi" chord never makes the song sound finished, at least to my ears. When performing these songs live without the luxury of a studio fade out, I often play the missing I chord and the song finally sounds finished. I think the composers are at least subconsciously aware of this trick they're pulling off. Thoughts?

    • @Roikat
      @Roikat 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree that this chord progression gives a "perpetual groove" effect, and have also speculated similarly regarding the lack of resolution to an implied major chord. The subject of simple chord progressions that psychologically suggest they should be on perpetual repeat is fascinating.

    On another note, I think this "might" be the first time seeing 6-7-1 progression used outside of gospel music realms where it's typically used as a device or a "turn around" to resolve to tonic.
    Anyone have any other contemporary examples? I don't listen to much pop music ( listen to everything else) so I have no idea if the usage of this progression is prevalent in this genre of music.

    I am not a fan of The Chainsmokers at all, but as somebody who has tried to write generic pop music to prove it isn't that hard, it is WAY harder than people give it credit for. There's a certain art to creating hooks that will stick in somebody's head for hours and making a simple four chord progression get a crowd dancing and singing along. I don't respect it from a technical musicianship standpoint but I do absolutely respect it from a songwriting standpoint. I don't think these are songs that will be played in 60 years but I do think they have a place in the music world and think some of the followers freaking out about you covering such a poppy artist have really misplaced anger.

    Dude, your song choices continue to be on point. This is by far the best Chainsmokers song (kinda the only one I like by them tbh). As a straight up pop-punk kid for llfe, the influences on this song are clear and speak to my soul haha (cue Blink-182 ref).
    One thing though, in the first chorus vocal stack it doesn't really sound like Halsey doing the high octave, it sounds more like either a falsetto or straight up pitch-shifted Andrew Taggart, either way heavily tuned to give it that nasty but great electronic tone. Halsey's voice would sound way more natural up in that range, even if they tuned the bejesus out of it. You can tell because on the second chorus her voice is blended w/ Taggart's in that octave and it beefs up the second chorus nicely.
    Also, I like that you mention that they extend the instrumental interlude. It's the clear EDM influence of pop music today, where vocal chorus hooks have kind of been ditched for dance breaks. I like that this song has both, whereas a bunch of tunes today don't bother to write lyrical choruses anymore. (Also the lyrics of this tune are really good.)
    Anyway, keep up the great work, Rick!

When Jim sings it, he's not just showboating, he really means it. I mean, the guy sings "The future's uncertain and the end is always near" and he's dead a year later. That's an amazing and powerful line written by someone who lived on the edge, it's not just some 80s rock cliché. I have never heard this before. [edit] but it sounds like there's room for some guitars.

      You could actually go to Tronicbox channel. They did 80s version of it and added killer guitar solo.

    This one was awesome Rick Thanks! Would love to see some more modern pop like this because the production is just incredible! 👌🙌

    I think you could make a great future episode of your series: "ALWAYS THE SUN" by The Stranglers. Or Golden Brown or anything by The Stranglers (Killing Joke, The Cure or any british post-punk bands would be also pleasantly welcome). But Always The Sun is one of those great pop hits that just seems to fly above the strains of time crafted by acute musicians and melodists, a marvel of arrangements, production and emotion. I have chills when the chorus hits on and I call for your musical knowledge to explain me why I feel so moved by this melody. Please, consider some post-punks bands, Mr Beato .

    I’m sorry, Rick. I’ve heard this song several times and I watched the whole video, and I respectfully disagree with you wholeheartedly. I don’t see anything in particular that sets this song apart from anything else on pop radio. It’s mediocre. I respect your musical knowledge and sensibilities immensely. You are a treasure on TH-cam. I sincerely love your stuff, and agree with almost all of your great song picks. I am puzzled by this one, however. I will continue to watch and learn.

      Chris Bourassa, he does say that and in hindsight I think the majority of my opinion rest in the fact that I don’t like this genre. I don’t know exactly why but I can’t stand modern pop. It doesn’t resonate with me and I feel like 20 years from now folks will be saying “who are these guys?”

      David Curtis I don’t think anyone in 20 years is going to be wondering “who is this” about anyone that hit the top 40. Taste aside (I’m not super fond of LOT of pop these days) it’s not hard to appreciate what some of the producers and artists do sonically even if the music doesn’t speak to you personally.

    I really like this song, and I think it's aging pretty well (still seeing a lot of airplay despite being a few years old at this point). I kind of wish you had spent some time on Halsey's wailing in the outro, which is my favorite part of the song. But great job nonetheless.

    One of the best videos on your channel. I love how you enjoy every bit of this song and how you showcased each nuance. Thanks for the good work Rick!
