I just love how Misha and Periphery members are interactive online. How can people even hate on a band like this?
Some people may not be in love with their music, but Periphery, and Misha's interviews in particular taught me (and probably many more people) how to run my underground band in the digital world. They should be remembered as pioneers in this sense, and they have a huge influence on contemporary metal musicians.
"Reptile" would be a tremendous showcase of Mark Holcomb's work.

So software exists - it’s not possible. We’re human so we can distinguish different instruments and parts - a computer is just reading a sound wave - it can’t isolate tracks in it because there are no “tracks”

Gabe Maddern Misha said himself he will always be in the band.. he just doesn’t have an active role in writing and touring but has an integral part in the sound. He is spiritually present I guess. I also agree with OP that he is a damn genius. The work he does with other bands as a producer is insane.

A lot of people don't like Spencer's singing. But this really showcases his talent.
Funny enough hes actually the reason i fell in love with Periphery, i guess its because his voice draws some similar parallels to Chester Bennington's, but Spence really gets to shine with this song for sure

People who write and play metal do it because they love it. It’s a part of who they are as individuals. A vast majority of other genres of music are in it to become famous, and wealthy.
Well, in this specific case, the video is giving a lot of praise to the band, and probably a lot of extra airtime to people that might not know about the band.

Periphery is one of those bands that you hear the first time and go, "Yeah, this is gonna be good." I second those requests for Tesseract also.

I didn't really have anything to compare them to when I first heard them, so I went in with a blank slate and was like "oh dang." Lol
It's one of those bands that on hearing it the first time around it's awesome. But the more you listen the more you notice things that you didn't before. And it gets better each time
The only thing I've heard from them is the "alpha" album which was hot garbage. Sounded like screamo from 2007

One day Periphery will be regarded along with the greatest of classic prog bands.
I know they are so innovative. They are prog but don’t just shove everything into a song. They start slow and add more is it goes along. It really makes the songs easy to listen to but it doesn’t feel like another pop song and the music has some complexity and actual good writing.
Absolutely they are so unique and SO listenable
I can't stand them, or most of these modern "prog" bands.

He's holding a lot of notes in that song, terrific vocal performance all along.
Periphery is much better instrumental, you can actually listen and appreciate the complex parts of every instrument and this guy just ruins the feel of the music and completely changes it and fucks it up...imo.

For anyone wondering if Spencer can pull off these vocals live - I've seen him go an octave HIGHER on some songs. Live. Blew my mind
He’s a phenomenal singer with great range and technique but I don’t think you know what an octave is if you think he can sing an octave higher than the highest notes on here lol.

I’m really digging the parts where you got Misha to demonstrate and explain the story behind parts of his songwriting. You ought to incorporate these more often with more artists wherever possible, I think it adds a whole new depth and layer to What Makes This Song Great. Keep it up, Rick!
Lurch685 Excellent idea but I suspect limited in application. There aren't many musicians who combine artistry and brilliance with humbleness and openness the way Misha Mansoor does.
I'm all about Periphery's super heavy stuff but, I gotta admit, Absalomb, Catch Fire, and Lune are my favorite songs on this album. They really hit me right in the feels and I feel like they really show the band's versatility

I met Misha Mansoor at a guitar clinic in St. Petersburg, FL. He’s a very humble and straightforward guy. The amazing thing is that he said none of the guys in the band know anything about music theory.

Rick Beato It’s not a criticism of them at all. I’m just repeating what Misha said at the clinic. It’s amazing to me that they compose such complex music with a lot of uncommon chords (at least in metal) without any theoretical background.
It's all about having an ear for it. I'm not nearly as good as they are but I know that my songwriting has evolved a lot and I tend to hear in my head what I want. And my writing has improved so much because I now know better what I want before writing it.

11:23 this is where I really think the decision to sell the individual tracks of these songs was a BRILLIANT idea. Wanna hear the song as the band intended? Unmute all the tracks in your daw. Wanna hear the song as a lush, beautiful guitar and vocals song? Mute the drums, bass, and rhythm guitars. Wanna hear a heavy groove with badass fuckin distorted bass and double kick drum? Do the opposite.
It's like 3 songs in one and buying the producer pack kinda made it feel like a video game with unlockable content. Very unique experience and I hope they continue to do it :)

This is really inspiring! You’re right, better late than never! The hardest part about learning music theory is finding the motivation to do so, which it sounds like you have! I know people have a hard time with it but I personally never struggled with it because I wanted to learn about it from day one. Also most things in theory are laid out very logically, almost like a language, where you can figure out what something is called by thinking about it’s name. You can do it!

Michele Parker honestly that’s all that matters! That and the desire to learn. I really like Rick Beato’s channel because he has a mastery over the concepts that I learned in college when I was studying music and explains them in such an understandable way. He and Adam Neeley are really good at that, although Adam neeley’s stuff is the half of theory that’s very interesting (I think) but not necessarily useful to a beginner or a casual songwriter. He’s pushing the boundaries of theory. 12 tone is really good too, he breaks down popular music and explains all of it with little elephant drawings. Anyway, my point is there’s never been a better time to start learning than right now! I’m sure you can do it :)

Besides the great song analysis, what I love about this video is seeing that even big professional guitarists/musicians don't know all their songs perfectly of the top of their head. Normally when you listen to a band you only hear the one time they recorded the track, or you see them play a well rehearsed set-list on tour. So it looks like they can effortlessly play any song front to back.
It's reassuring to actually see that I'm not a shitty guitarist for having to occasionally "relearn" songs that I previously knew.
Spencers voice is what got me into periphery and now they're still my favorite band after 6 years. Incredible band. Incredible people. Such a huge amount of talent between the 6 of them. It should be illegal.

Yeah, I was glad to find out this wasn't all hit songs, it could just be any obscure song as long as it's musically good enough. Most of his episodes prior to this have been chart-toppers, nice change of pace.

Their old stuff is gonna make you get into them for sure, then. Even though i'm more of a periphery 2 guy myself I still very much love periphery's self titled, and it's pretty much just Misha's (aka Bulb) stuff. But all their albums are great imo
I'd really love to see Rick break down "It's Only Smiles". I love the layering on that song, and I think there's a lot to look at there.
I've slept on Periphery too long and I guess I'm discovering their music at the right time in my life...what Adam does on bass really inspires me to make killer basslines. I had to pause the video for 3 hours just to practice. I guess that's what good music does, it inspires others to make music.
I think maybe its time for Porcupine Tree, Pink Floyd or The Pineapple Thief! :) I love those bands

The first time I listened to this song, nothing really jumped out at me. I was listening for the technically impressive stuff like MAKE TOTAL DESTROY or Extraneous: odd time signatures, frayed rhythms, and flashy riffs. But the more I listened to it, the more depth the song had, especially after I really took in that guitar solo. It quickly became my favorite solo of all time, and soon after that, the song became one of my favorite Periphery songs. And now that you've taken it apart and shown some of the stuff that goes on behind the scenes, and shed light on some of those magical harmonies, I'm enthralled once again. Thank you for reminding me exactly why I freaking love this band. Super stoked to see the next song you dissect!
21:45 That riff is from an old song of theirs called The Fast Ones, from back when Jake Veridika was their vocalist. I remember getting misty-eyed when I heard Absolomb was gonna be on P3, and hearing that riff seamlessly dance its way into the song sent my heart soaring.
I recognised The Focus Hour in one of their studio updates for P4 and I’m ready to weep with joy.

Most often I watch these videos to see songs from bands that I’m already into... but this is one of those more rare occasions when I watch the video because I’ve heard of the band but don’t really know about them... then proceed to like the band.
The best part about this was watching Misha have to re-learn stuff he wrote. Like, most of the time you hear something from him or other musicians you enjoy, it's a finished product, nicely polished. It was just really great to hear it a bit rusty and raw. Shatters the illusion a bit, in a good way.
Stephen Mosher everytime he showcases riffs and says "a bit sloppy let's re-track" I'm like "What? I'm only dreaming of that accuracy". It's a little intimidating

To answer your question from a previous topic, has every song been written...wow, considering the complexity and uniqueness of this song, I'll guess an emphatic no. Thanks for breaking down this very intense song, I'm 58 and I'm confident musicians and the music they create will continue to inspire and amaze me until my final breathe...just wow. I'll toss in a break down request for three of my biggest guitar influences (any song would be fine), Ronnie Montrose, Pat Travers, and Frank Marino. Keep up the great work Rick!
This has to be my favorite "what makes this song great" entry so far! The depth in which you investigated this masterpiece is amazing in my opinion. I'd love to see more videos in the future where you "interview" the artists - if possible, haha. As a musician myself it's humbling and inspiring at the same time to see someone like Misha have to remember parts of his own work. It proves no matter how talented or top-tier bands are they are still made up of human beings. It makes lofty musical goals still seem possible for the rest of us.
The entire "Periphery: III" album is an absolute masterpiece. I'm looking forward to your next dive into Mark's work VERY much. Their music is something that you cannot help but get sucked into in an unhealthy way, haha. Every time you listen you notice something new!
As a side note, one of my favorite parts is watching you musically nerd out from 24:14 - 25:00, it shows how much music is deep rooted in your soul.

periphery is just one of those bands that you can look at literally any song of theirs and find new things every time you listen. they’re such talented dudes and they’re definitely going to leave a mark on music history.
Man this is brilliant. The progressive metal scene has given me such massive, emotional songs, and Periphery is a huge part of that.

I have had the privelege of being Matt's student on drums and he is the best drummer I have come across. Periphery are the band that took me into the other realms of music. This is a great video.

When you start playing the vocals together with guitars is where I wet my pants. It's so damn beautiful! These guys are geniuses! I mean you don't usually hear there are some chords, not just C when Spencer starts to sing but all under that heavy bass part is a beautiful melody. I suddenly felt teary when I heard that for the first time.

@@negromister I got the B7K Ultra about 9 months ago and it's quite honestly one of the best purchases i've made, even though it's a good $400 for the pedal. It blows everyone away that hears the tones you can get from the thing, especially the overdrive/distortion which sounds natural and full, not brittle and metallic like every other bass distortion.
