Going For a Pint on the Royal Enfield Interceptor. The Perfect Bike For a Sunday Ride?

  • เผยแพร่เมื่อ 25 เม.ย. 2023
  • Today I take the Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 for a Sunday ride in the beautiful Rutland British countryside. I visit Launde Abbey, A stunning location to ride to and take in the scenery. I then head to the Blue Ball, a British Country Pub located in the village of Braunston in Rutland. A truly beautiful and quintessential pub, serving delicious food and great drinks.
I also discuss some new points about the Royal Enfield including the handling, the engine, the braking, and the longevity and quality of some of the parts used on the bike.
If you have made money, and as a result, have some disposable income, you may look at buying a motorcycle to invest your money in, and if you choose wisely, you may find the right bike that becomes a future classic, and actually, over time, appreciates in value. As we are entering a new era, with electric vehicles becoming more and more prevalent, the choice motorbikes of today, could be the valuable classics of tomorow. You could of course invest in gold, silver, stocks and shares or bonds, but a motorcycle is much more fun!!! This is not financial advice but merely our opinion. Choose wisely!

I expect most motorcycles subjected to winter roads and little tender loving care would show some corsion. I've exposed my 2016 Thruxton R to seven winter rides and the Bonneville Salt Flats several times but the finish is almost new but I've seen other Thruxton Rs have corsion issues. I clean my bikes after a ride and keep them polished that is it.
    Keep up the good work.

One of your best videos! I love the change of scenery and the pub. This format is great! I have an Int650 as well. I put on Enfield precision pipes that go horizontal so I can get bigger saddle bags on. I got them from Hitchcock in the UK and they sound great as well. Cheers!

these standard retro bikes are just perfect daily commuters imo. i'd buy them over and over again because of just how amazingly practical they are. always recommended to have one at least to partner a sportsbike/touring.

I got my Interceptor 650 beginning of March this year on a rainy day and the absolute first thing I noticed when I drove her inside the underground parking lot here is that the dials fogged up pretty bad, so, yeah, that's normal :) Last week I saw the new 2023 'Black Ray' version of the Interceptor and I spotted the housing of the dials is different. Wonder if they improved on that matter. Never seen any review mentioning this update.

Great video, mate. I love my mark 2 Interceptor 650, definitely a keeper.
By the way, mine has 4000kms and not a single point of corrosion or rust. My friend has a Continental GT with around 15000kms and same thing, no rust or corrosion. Maybe this one got a little mistreated or something, lol.
Keep the videos coming and have a great week! Cheers from Brazil!

Nice to see you back on the Interceptor again. Having owned mine since May 2020, I can say that it is not a bike to be used and abused. You do need to keep on top of the polishing on alloy parts, to prevent furring. Also, the clocks do mist up at the lower edge, but no big deal as you don’t constantly look at the fuel gauge and trip meter anyway. I have a pair of Scorpions on mine, and even with the baffles in (my preferred option), they sound fantastic. I have also done many of the mods others have, regarding letting the bike breathe and handling, and it is so much better for it. The Interceptor is still a fantastic bike, if, like me, you are not impressed by gadgets, gizmos and electronic sorcery. It’s pretty much as basic as is permitted nowadays, but that’s it’s appeal, well to me anyway. There have been some issues with cutting out, which seems to have been down to over greasing of relays, but thankfully, I have never had any problems with mine. Nice return ride, oh and I only drink cider and rum nowadays, since “Ronald’s” staff tried to kill me with a dodgy burger. Thanks for sharing.

Hello Darcy, perfect type of ride for an Interceptor. I've tried 4 different polishes on the engine cases/valve cover on my '20 INT. Best is Maguires 'Motorcycle All Metal Polish'. May be called NXT in the UK. An oil spray protectant for over wintering works well. I'm using a German product, S100. It cleans up easily with mineral spirits come Spring. Nice thing about the Maguires product is it leaves a protective coating. I polish the cases twice a year. Instrument fogging is an issue. I had an issue after the 2nd winter, '21/'22. Haven't had the issue since. It's reported on the forums that there is a yellow-colored circle of thin plastic covering a small hole on the back of each clock that when removed inhibits misting. Take care!

  • @manuelhaug4053
    @manuelhaug4053 ปีที่แล้ว +3

The misting up of the dials on a cold day is a common problem on the Interceptor.
I have stainless steel exhausts on mine so rust is no issue .
The engine case has to be polished frequently to keep it nice on mine too.

Having lived in Rutland for number of years, my favourite piece of road lay between Langham and Cold Overton. Most memorable curve is a blind summit bend that drops into a ravine, like the corkscrew, Leguna Seca. Going the opposite direction it resembles Eau rouge/ Raidillon, Spa.
It's a hidden gem (not shown on maps).
    Enjoy.

I had the continental mr clean gt650 and as another viewer mentioned you have to keep up on the cleaning of the chrome ,The rear shocks at the top pitted first and each side of the engine casings ,I also had a 2 year old triumph t120 and I must say the Enfield put a bigger smile on my face .
I now have an 1981 Suzuki Gs850g which is my favourite. The metal is far superior and the build compared to all modern retro’s and it’s the real deal ...

I really enjoyed the video - thank you -especially that you actually went to a country pub on a bike which is one of life’s pleasures. Especially with such a classic looking bike that reminds me of the old school bikes and a Matchless 350 that I learned to ride on when I was 12. I am of a generation that often went to the pub on my bikes - memorably as a late teenager on my Suzuki X7 that went out in every weather in the late 70s in rural Staffordshire when it was perfectly acceptable to have a few jars. Whilst the crisp night air often refreshed us after we were turfed out of the local at closing hours, I have overdone it and woken up in a field …. but not ashamed as it was an early and important lesson and many decades later I stick to my 1 pint limit if it’s a short ride and zero if I have some miles ahead which one of reasons I am still on two wheels nearly every day.

Great video this is the sort of riding I really enjoy, country lanes in England and Wales (I would do Scotland but I don’t live near 😉), getting a brew or a pint, then some more riding. I ride my Interceptor all year round and I have given up trying to keep the casings shiny, now the weather is getting better I will give it a polish but in the winter I don’t bother as its a loosing battle. My clocks steamed up in the first week I had the bike.

My 2022 Himalayan dial mists up too. I treat it now as an indicator of how chilly the weather is but it goes away once the weather warms up. And my bike does seem to start corroding (patina?) in some areas and my fork rubber skirt lifts up by itself (i call that character). REs do seem to have its own charm❤ for the price....😆

Nice video. Living in Australia with it's mostly dry climate the fogging clock is not an issue. My Interceptor is 3 years old and it has never suffered from the fogging problem. Similarly regarding the early rust - here in Oz because of our climate and the fact that we don't need to put salt on the roads most bikes don't rust. The Interceptor is a grand bike - I love it.

Interesting, I’m in NSW just bought a 2021 Interceptor with only 1500km on the clock. Immaculate condition, no rust, but the fogging of the speedometer and revs did occur on most rides so far. Also noticed a slight wobble up and down front end hopping around 80 km/h. Anyone had the same experience? Mine has the Pirelli Phantom tyres.

Great review in lovely setting Darcy .Sadly, the corrosion is due to salt ingress and I know this from experience.I once bought a new Yamaha XJR 1300 in March from a dealer and after a just 3 mile pre-delivery- inspection and test, the same alloy corrosion was evident , despite warning the dealer to ensure it was washed thoroughly afterwards and of course they didn't bother as it was sunny and dry !.It can languish in the road surface for months and my advice is to leave all polished bright decorative metalwork smeared permanently with a protective oil such as ACF 50 - GT 85 .It really is worthwhile !.

  • @cliveomahoney4096
    @cliveomahoney4096 ปีที่แล้ว

I have covered all of my bikes in ACF50 every autumn and I've had almost no corrosion issues. Even on bikes that are prone to furring up. I also tend to run away from chrome and polished metal as much on bikes as much as possible due to being totally idle. Plasticky to me is a selling point.

Wondering about that foggy instrument cluster - my Royal Enfield Classic 350 had that happen and it's never been wet! Whilst under a cover, etc. this winter, on cold days, my speedo had this occur. I woulda thunk they were sealed nice and tight, but I guess not. It can't be good for the electronics - hoping it doesn't crap out on me, but we do have three-year warranty, so that should do if it does die on me!

Steamy clocks. They all do that sir! The cases are bare alloy, they need wiping off after every ride on wet roads, ACF 50 or similar if salt is about. Mine is 3.5 years old, no real corrosion trouble but they are a lot like 60s machines with the bare metal. Great bikes and great fun.

As much as I like the Enfield I'm not keen on the results of winter on it.
I thought we moved past that many years ago. Indeed when I was young and lived in a flat I owned a Honda which sat outside in all weathers and its first week with me was in the snow. There was no rust/corrosion when I sold it at around 11k miles - though I did always rinse it off after any wet or salty road ride.
I suppose in fairness its probably been ridden on all surfaces in all weathers and rarely washed but even still thats poor for a 1500 mile bike.
I love the relaxed video. Just pottering about doing what we like to do is one of the great things too many people forget about these days. This is the more traditional side to biking and I feel too many people miss out on it because they only get a bike as a cheap way to commute. This shows there is so much more to them than that. When you're not reviewing bikes more videos like this where you're just doign bike things would be very welcome.

Very nicely done. Riding a motorcycle is, as we used to say in the '60s, my "E -Ticket". A passport to adventure. Fun. I do not want to exceed any limits on public roads, I just want to enjoy myself. Here in Southern California we have the deserts and 40+ years ago I would ride out and back nearly every weekend. I no longer do that due that all the time but do visit relatives in Arizona and Oregon but I got ride of the GL1800 and bought a truck. Still have my Sportster 1200 Low and if not for the way too loud pipes that the previous owner put on it (and he got rid of the stock ones) I would give those rides a go on the Sporty.
    Maybe I will anyway. 🙂

I picked up my Interceptor in December 2022 and it has just 2100 km on it. Was about to get this colour but fortunately decided on the Mark 2 chrome one instead. Matte finish is hard to maintain, though so is chrome. I haven't had any fogging yet but those corrosion marks on the engine covers are normal for bare aluminium alloy. They need to be polished every now and then. My bike also has one issue that this one does at 8:34 which is the handlebar brace. It crawls upwards on the left.

Salt will make a mess of the engine casings quickly if not washed off. Some maintenance is required! Gauges steaming up is a common problem with the Interceptor. It is still my favourite bike though.

Regularly cleaning & polishing a motorcycle is part of motorcycle maintenance...but no matter how much it's cleaned & polished, these slight cosmetic issues are going to happen even with the best of materials...the only way to keep one in showroom condition is to keep it in a showroom...if it gets ridden, these things will happen no matter how diligent you are about cleaning it...regularly cleaning & polishing will certainly slow it down & keep it to a minimum, but nothing will stop it completely...

Really no surprise to see that bare alloy parts corrode when exposed to ready salted Winter roads. It can be avoided with either fastidious cleaning and maintenance, or leave the bike at home until Summer. Let's face it, bikes like these are not about ballistic A road performance, their forte is doing just what Mr D has done here. A leisurely ride on some nice country lanes with maybe a stop for a pint here or a coffee there. They excel at the type of riding that would prove a right PITA on a sports mount or heavyweight tourer. I went down the triumph route with a Street Scrambler and enjoy riding it as much, if not more, than the others in the garage. I think the Triumphs have the edge on finish with the durable black coated engine cases but make no mistake, neglect any bike over Winter and you will pay for it. Safe riding all👍😃.

Saw both GT and Interceptor Dark models at Cooperb Motorcycles and they look fantastic. I actually prefer them to the polished/chromed finish models and I suspect they would still look fresh after a couple of years and a thousand’s of miles.
Nice to go for a ride out and stop somewhere nice for a pint 👍
    Cool video😎

I have a 2022 interceptor in chrome/red and I must say that the pipes are way too quiet for commuting (very dangerous to be silently filtering). The sound is nice, especially above 5000 RPM but strangled by the euro5 pipes - I'm looking at replacing them with the TEC big bore kit.
Having said that, absolutely loving the bike and zooming around the south of England between hedgerows! It's my first bike and very good as a base for customisation.

Yes, the fogging issue in the meter console is common. I got the console changed and the new ones on production that are in market now seem to have been taken care of.

The heat blade ring thingy... they all do that. Way I fixed it was by replacing it with a full tec system lol.
The dials? They again all do that. RE will replace em but the next set will do it too so most dealers will tell you it just isn't worth the faff.
As for the chrome. Keep it polished and it will stay good. All that detritus on yours will come straight off with a little autosol.

with regard to the engine casings the alloy case do not have a protective finish so you have to polish them ,I use solvol autosol and elbow grease really fetches them up nice

Not surprised about the clocks misting seems to be a common issue with these. As for the build quality well I expected as much they are built to a low price something had to give.

I have installed 865 big bore kit with the Kent stage 2 cam(made in Uk) from Hitchcock on my interceptor. It vibrates more now but it's a Beast now, I miss the smoothness of the stock bike. I live in a rural village in India. Thanks to our Almighty Creator. I managed to do that.
