As I am now including my boyfriend and children in sabbats and witchy holidays, I appreciate the more inofrmative videos like this. You tend to be rather midline, not making things about following Redes or laws, thus making things friendly for witches like myself. Thank you for that. Keep being awesome and sharing your wealth of information!

Not gonna lie... it really hit me how July is a winter month in the southern hemisphere. I always knew that the seasons were flipped but I never thought about the months!

Cailleach is pronounced "Kai-lock" or "K-eye-lock", it is also the word for hag and witch in modern irish!

Lammas is my favorite festival. It was the first festival I celebrated after becoming Pagan and this time of year has always been a favorite of mine, the beginning of autumn. In my area we don’t grow a lot of wheat, at least not anymore. Hay is our number one agricultural crop and beef cattle the number one livestock commodity. Hay is essential to the survival of the cattle through the winter. By mid to late August the last of the hay is usually put up. I always include a mini hay bale on my Lammas altar to give thanks for the hay crop. Although I don’t have cattle, I do have other small livestock and know all to well how miserable things get when we run out of hay before spring arrives!
We celebrate with a outside feast around a campfire with friends and family. I always make zucchini bread, which is sweet bread using zucchini squash. Usually using squash from my own garden. I try to use as much from my own garden as possible and get as much locally as I can. I do this all the time, but make a special effort for this meal. We have blackberry wine from a local winery and cap off the weeks festivities with a trip to a local agricultural fair. Hope you enjoy your Lammas! Start some traditions!

Ah Lammas is actually one of my favorites!! How could it be forgotten?! It's when the garden is the most abundant, I can bake some bread, the weather is great for a picnic lunch or dinner, we could sit long into the night around a fire hanging out with friends and drinking beer, enjoying how green and lush everything is on a forest walk, etc.
Thank you, this was quite in depth! I always look forward to these how to celebrate videos as well as your seasonal altar videos!!

I think it was amazing that you explained that Lammas and Lughnasadh come from two different cultures💖 I celebrate Lughnasadh being Welsh with Irish ancestors and I get so happy when people become more educated with Celtic culture because it has meshed into other cultures celebrations, which theres nothing wrong with that but it's good to know the origin💖 this video is amazing, I really would love to see your channel grow bigger💖 many blessings🌒🌕🌘

August 1 always makes me a little sad, because there’s hints of fall already- summer birds are gone already, crickets start. Maybe what’s needed is a festival to celebrate and mark the occasion. Will pay more attention next Lughnasa. And I need the ritual for protection of livestock! Very informative, thanks Hearth.

We can’t have bonfires because we live in the desert and it’s too dangerous. Also it’s too hot and dry to be in front of a fire anyway. So we cook our feast at a friend’s house on a BBQ grill. We write wishes on Oak chips and sprinkle them over the hot coals, then cook our feast together over the grill.

As a pagan sister, I'm so happy that I have a wonderful Father Figure in Lugh. Truly Lughnasadh is one of the best of the three Harvest festivals to give thanks. The three Harvest festivals Lughnasadh, Mabon, and Samhain are basically a extended Thanksgiving long before it existed. May you have a blessed Lughnesadh dear sister. ☀️🌙🌻🌾

Thanks for this extremely well-done and informative video. I've been a witch trying to celebrate this holiday for decades, but it's been a very difficult one to connect with. Maybe it's because all this time I've lived in the city. I'd bake some bread or so, but...the only thing I know about this time of year in the city is that it's bloody hot and gross outside and I don't wanna do very much. Bleah.
BUT...I just moved to a rural community in Washington State, USA and this is our first Sabbat in our new home. In the country, the connection to this holiday has changed. I am carefully marking what's active in the plant and animal kingdoms here right now. The swallows swoop and fly constantly over our field, and so do the eagles and hawks and owls (I've never seen so many raptors before!). They all have babies to feed, so they're all pretty busy out there hunting. Yarrow and clover is flowering in abundance. Best of all are the BERRIES. This region is known for it's berry farms, so we have a plethora of blackberries, raspberries, and blueberries everywhere to celebrate with.
NOW this holiday has hit Home and shall forever be special. This year is our First Harvest of decades worth of work getting ourselves to our new farm. Lammas/Lughnasdha will be a feast of thanksgiving for all our blessings, and a pledge of love to this land to keep it well. May you and all the beloved children of the Earth Mother feel the same blessings I have been granted. Blessed Be, so Mote it be.

Also the witchlings want to know what is hanging from your pentagram Hearth? One says feathers and the other says hair (😮)

They're feathers. I found one feather earrings and decided to let it fill the gap before I add something else in its place xx

I will let her know. I did say it wasn't likely to be your hair 😉
It looks good anyway. I'd like to add more feathers around the house so I might try something similar....

Corn is a "new world" plant. So, how was the ancient Celts making corn dolls?

This is just speculation, but as corn became incorporated in other areas in probably became an important crop and now it would only make sense to incorporate it in the festival. I also assume that with how difficult history can be( between the lose of culture, histories & oral traditions that were not written down by the people practicing them, and the outright destruction of history & traditions by invaders & colonizers) some things have become muddled and it might be easy to accidentally attribute things where they would not be. Especially considering there are so many different facets of history to be studied.

Because British English calls grain corn, mostly wheat, I believe. American corn specifically is called maize.

I feel like I just betrayed everything I've ever learned and should take some time off from my practice. We had to put my boyfriend's familiar down this morning as she had become viscous and began randomly attacking me to the point of causing me to have to have surgery to put my calf muscle and skin back together.

Sister, weren't the Anglo Saxons( Saxons) also Celts?

    • @HearthWitch
      @HearthWitch  5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

As far as I know the Anglo Saxons were Germanic in descent and colonised only England. Whereas the Celts were across all of the UK but primarily Wales, Ireland and Scotland using an alternative Celtic language which is still spoken in these regions.

Celts also ended up in northern France (Bretagne/Brittany) and the Northwest tip of Spain (Galicia).
