Thank you, Moviewise. I've watched at least a dozen videos of the best of the year, and more in print form, and they all seem to name the same damn movies over and over and over again. This video was a breath of fresh air and gave me a bunch of new material to watch.
Glad to see Decision to Leave getting some praise on the channel. Really loved that film. Moviewise chad list as expected, Ferrari was great, and I need to watch The Peasants, Dogman and El Conde ASAP.
I think The Banshees of Inisherin might have got a mention for 2022. Nonetheless, I'll look forward to watching the movies you suggested. Cheers for the lists!
"Get good". Another good slogan for this channel. Loved these lists, lots for me to check out. Hoping to see "Coup de chance" soon and I'm glad to hear people giving it praise.
I watched The Peasants in its original Polish with Turkish subtitles and absolutely loved it (I don't speak neither Polish nor Turkish but the movie is that good)
I haven't seen most of these as in the UK they just don't seem to have a cinema release for most foreign film. Good to see a mention of the late Troy Kennedy Martin. Ferrari is not his first film about cars or cars in Italy as he was screenwriter for the iconic Italian Job (The 60's original with Michael Caine & 3 minis, red, white & blue of course)
Finally some mention of Beau Is Afraid. Easily my favorite film of the year (along with Poor Things, of course). It was just so damned much fun to watch. Joaquin Phoenix in yet another role that he was born to play is worth the price of admission alone.
I still enjoy your channel. 👍Surprised you didn't find room for 'La chimera' in any of the categories, it's a good, interesting movie. 'The Menu' could be the most outstanding movie of the 2022 imo, and I really appreciate your admiration to 'The Taste of Things', it's a masterful film! Looking forward to more videos from you 🤩🙏🙌
Hi Moviewise, appreciate the video. I agree with prasie for acting in Ferrari and it being masterfully directed. On the other hand- don't you think that a film about car race should have faster pace and be more concise?
Great video as always, new list of movies to watch. A lot of your earlier arty lists made me think of something: I would love to see you do a video on whether the artistic flair destroys the narrative elements. I remember a quote from a cinematographer years ago who said something to the effect of "If you notice my work, I didn't do a good job" (I wish I could remember who said this and what the exact quote was, it was much better than my remembrance of it, I'm sure). But basically he was making the point that the cinematography should enhance the focus of the story, not be the focus itself. Like, just look at the 2021 Tragedy of Macbeth. I don't know much about this movie past the clips I've seen of it...but it's based on a PLAY, which is famous for dialogue. The cinematography should enhance that, but just look at it! It looks like some kind of modern brutalist garbage where the focus is on the bizarre sets and camera action, not the characters or their words. Looking at clips from this movie makes me race to earlier films which made the actors and dialogue the focus. It makes me run away from it, not towards it because of how overt it is, and how is that good cinematography? It also makes me wonder, can cinematography be considered good if the movie is just that bad? I've seen movies be great in spite of lazy direction and cinematography, but I can't think of a time the reverse has been true. And looking at this version of MacBeth, I'm wondering...can overly artistic cinematography actually ruin a film? Again, would love a video of it.
First of all, thank you for the new awards video! Your picks are fascinating and should inspire a lot of discussion. The biggest revelation for me is "The Peasants." I've never even heard of that movie before, but it looks incredible! While I liked "Ferrari," I also found it frustrating because the ending is where I wish the story had begun. Or make it twice as long. There's a bunch of text at the end telling us what happened next, but that's the part of the story that interests me most.
Haven't seen it yet, but why was Ferrari so ignored/trashed by critics? Reviews (and the overall state of biopics) were so discouraging in fact, that even me, a big fan of Michael Mann (and Ferraris!), didn't bother to see it.
Yes, that seems to be the consensus. I myself didn't bother with it because, aside from reviews, it felt like an Oscar-baity biopic, and I hated his other "Oscar-baits" (Ali, Last of the Mohicans). To me, real MM is Thief, Manhunter, Heat, Collateral, and his absolute masterpiece The Insider.
I think you'd really enjoy RMN and About Dry Grasses. Two great new pictures by Palm D'Or winners and dripping in cinematic language. Nuri Ceylan is the modern day Antonioni/Angelopoulos.
Great Video. Just saw one critic, in Brazil, that said that Ferrari was the best film of 2023. I wish "The Card Counter" had show up in the top 3 of 2021.
You have great taste when it comes to technicalities of film (cinematography, editing, directing, production design) but I cant help but feel you elavate these aspects above the whole. West Side Story was peak cratsmanship, but the overall picture was still a lacklustre, pale imitation effort to the '61 version.
I think Moviewise views films like paintings in a museum. He appreciates them more for their artistic merit rather than for how interesting their story is, or for how entertaining they are.
I like your snark on 'The Worst Person in the World.' Overrated movie. Did you see 'Syk Pike' (called Sick of Myself in English), another, less hyped film from around then, also about a mixed-up young Oslo woman? So much better.
Good video as always with Moviewise, but I'm very disappointed with the lack of appreciation for The Promised Land, which is in my opinion perhaps the greatest movie of the 2020's so far. An incredible story with a very rich screenplay with great density, fantastic acting by Mads Mikkelsen (one of the finest actors of our time) and the rest of the cast, stunning cinematography and visual beauty... SadIy, I don't feel the world appreciates it for the great work it is, one of the best historical pictures of the last 25 years.
Since you liked Leila's Brothers, I wonder if you saw another great Iranian movie of the same year: Third World War (the title is an allegory). And yet in the same year, two other greats: Joyland (Pakistan) and Dalva (France)
I'm a great admirer of this channel, but I couldn't disagree more about "Ferrari" (I watched it the other night and already forgot I'd seen it), and "Tar" for that matter. But thanks for mentioning a lot of films I hadn't yet seen. I made a list!
Oh my lordy lord! The first time you showed Ferrari I thought on the very topic of, "if you are fake-speaking a non-English language why do an accent?" Two notables who never seemed to do accents: John Wayne and Sean Connery. Now it may be argued that John Wayne ALWAYS played John Wayne even when the character's name was Genghis Khan.
I watched The Accusation upon your recommendation today. I was thrilled to see a movie better than Anatomie. And... Nope. I think u r wrong. Of course it's a good movie, which succeeded to remain objective with a theme there it is extremely easy to turn everything into black and white, but there is not a glimpse of Anatomie's magique and suspence. It never deserved such a praise as Anatomie.
I admire your channel and your infinte movie wisdom. But: Ferrari? Really? This Film was a big disappointment in my eyes. A staggering amount of unmotivated shots, one example being when Ferrari visits Dinos Tomb. Or was anybody able to keep track which red car was piloted by whom, who was in the lead and so on? Also: Which drivers are we supposed to care about? I had the impression that some just disappear from the story randomly. I could write pages about what I didn’t like about a film I very much wanted to like.
Well said! I enjoy this channel a lot, agree with most but Ferrari let a lot to desire. I couldn't care any less about the characters. All the cars looked the same and the shots felt kind of random. Some great, some good but with no point. Jamiroquais Cosmic Girl clip is a more memorable Ferrari film.

Now the top movies of 2023 (and 2022 and 2021) that aren't dramas or drama-adjacent. You mentioned one comedy, but seemed to imply it wasn't even meant to be a comedy. Maybe the issue isn't that your taste didn't involve action, comedy, thriller or horror, but rather, movies in those genres weren't even close to being contenders. Shame, if so. Our tastes seem wildly different though, I'll say that. I don't like sad endings, I don't like depressing stories, I don't like somber atmospheres, all of which you seem to adore. It was unfocused and relatively biring.
Because it is completely unspectacular. Not near Mann's best
Only one way to find out then.
Because it’s a slow and boring family drama that should’ve not been named as “Ferrari” cos it had very little to do with Ferrari.
