  • BUY, LEASE OR FINANCE A HONDA JAZZ CROSSTAR FROM OSV: bit.ly/3pCIbIi
The Jazz Crosstar is intended by Honda to bring more of a lifestyle vibe to the Jazz supermini range and, like the standard model, gets a full hybrid engine. With the Crosstar, there's most of what you'd get with a small SUV - including a bit of extra ride height. But none of the crossover compromises you won't want to make if at heart you're still a supermini buyer.
    Background
These days, if you don't have exactly the right kind of SUV-style crossover model for every conceivable market segment, it seems you have to create one. This trend is perhaps most obvious at the smallest end of the crossover market. If your brand doesn't have a really small SUV model in the style of a Nissan Juke or a Volkswagen T-Cross, it's a potential problem. Which is why Ford had to jazz up its Fiesta supermini to create the Fiesta Active. And Audi felt the need to rugged-ise the A1 to create the A1 Citycarver.
Honda is in much the same boat. For crossover buyers, it doesn't have anything smaller than the HR-V. Hence the reason why the brand's fourth generation Jazz supermini range includes the SUV-style Crosstar model we going to look at here. Changes over the standard car are fairly minimal, so there's the same full-hybrid engine under the bonnet and the same clever 'Magic seat' system inside. But this Crosstar variant will make much more of a statement on the school run.
    Driving Experience
Thanks to a 37mm increase in ride height, the Crosstar version of this Jazz should be able to offer increased suspension travel, but any benefit is difficult to sense on the road in comparison with the standard version. There are no mechanical changes over the ordinary car and there's no kind of front wheel grip control system either. Like all current Jazz models, this one comes only with one engine - the brand's e:HEV powertrain. This is a full-Hybrid unit - so it's properly electrified like a Toyota Yaris Hybrid, rather than being only mildly electrified like the MHEV unit you can now have in a Ford Fiesta. The difference is important because a full-Hybrid can have far more reliance on battery power, especially in urban conditions. In this case, it's a 1.5-litre unit putting out 109PS which uses two electric motors and a compact lithium-ion battery pack. The combustion engine sends drive through a clever fixed-gear auto transmission which Honda reckons is smoother and more efficient than the type of belt-driven CVT set-up the Jazz had before (and the one that Toyota uses in its hybrids).
Basically the whole set-up is a downsized version of the 2.0-litre electrified engine used in the CR-V Hybrid and as there, you get various drive modes which the car selects for you. Most of the time at the wheel of this Honda you'll be in 'Hybrid Drive', which combines the engine and the battery pack in the most efficient way possible while recovering electricity from deceleration and storing it for future use. 'EV Drive' forces the Jazz to run in electric-only mode (though it can only do that for very short distances). And the 'Engine Drive' setting combines the petrol engine and the electric motor output for maximum performance. In this mode, the e:HEV powertrain gives this Jazz a 0-62mph time of 9.9 seconds and a maximum speed of 107mph.

Good review, thank you. We are downsizing from 2 cars to one and my wife doesn't want to drive a 'big' Focus! So, this will work for me as at least it doesn't carry the Jazz stair lift tag. OK, I'm 74 but hell I still have some life ahead, I hope.

I own both. The Crosstar is more agile than the standard version. Both are exceptional cars.

I think the benefit is that it can clear some curbs/road imperfections better than the standard jazz. One comment I had was that it is a bit expensive for what it is, but on the other hand you have a history of reliability for whatever it's worth. I like it in general, thanks for the review. Will wait for HR-V though!

According to my local dealer, the Crosstar is no longer being imported here in Italy. It did sell in tiny numbers, so that’s probably why

Yet another great review. Bought a top of the range Jazz in 2004 for £10.000.. how things change !

Part of that can be accounted for due to inflation (2004 was 17 years before this comment). But you have a valid point - cars are vastly more expensive now than they were. At the moment there is a terrible trend of sticking on some tacky plastic cladding, jacking up the suspension, adding an X to the name and 5-10k to the price because it's now an aspirational "lifestyle" car. or - to put it more succinctly - total bovine excreta - because, as noted in the owners manual - it isn't an off road car and if you try to use it as one the warranty is void....

I think the extra cost is worth it as it looks more interesting than the standard Jazz. It is much better made than the new Yaris and probably more reliable long term than the rest of the competition. Great review thanks.

I agree. I think it's more interesting than the regular Jazz. It looks quite appealing and it's a Crossover that would actually fit in my garage. It's just so pricey new. That said there are fair few dealer demos around the 20k mark and even a touch below showing on Autotrader.

Good review. Is it autocharged or plug in model? Is it Japanese or assembled in other country? Is a second hand car available for export ? What is the price in £ or $ ? What about freight and shipment ?

And sorry that Honda Australia were 'pulling' the Jazz from our shores. Given, the Crosstar would be probably better accepted, it's a sad end for us, but not for The UK. thanks again.

The straightforward, factual style of your reviews are great. Thanks for them. However on this one, do note that the Crosstar loses some features of the Jazz Ex - it doesn’t have the cross traffic monitoring or the blind spot assist. Perhaps Honda think that the extra body cladding will soak up the scrapes instead!

Repeating the extra ground clearance is 37 mm compared to the standard model is not very useful if you don't know the ground clearance of any of the cars. Why not say what the ground clearance of both cars is?

    @Rapscallion2009 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I'm not sure why you'd bother with the crosstar version. It's not actually 4x4 and has the same seat position as the stock car, but the higher driving position will slightly increase fuel consumption. It does look better, but I suspect most Jazz buyers won't care much about that.
Although. Did someone say "upgraded stereo" ?
