    Welcome to Belgrade, Captain! I always hoped you'll get to cover Belgrade someday and seeing this video made me very excited! It was such a great video, and I especially liked insights from the ground about how do you debrief, plan fuel and the next flight. Hope that we'll get to see the departure part as well some other day. 🙂

      I would like to take an opportunity and ask a question if that's okay. 🙂You've shown the FIX INFO page at 3:13, what are those concrete fixes showing and what do you use them for, especially those radial fixes?

      Sure, it is ok to ask questions! The fixes you see here are marking the different MSA (minimum sector altitude) sectors. Between 99 degrees and 161 degrees, the MSA is 3100 feet and in the other sector, it is 3000 feet. We took the information from the ILS approach chart.

      Yes, that is beautiful Danube. They have entered Serbia from the north between Ruski Krstur and Odzaci. Then they flew over the Danube at Novi Sad (the second biggest city in Serbia). Finally at approach, they crossed the highways one from Croatia and one from Hungary which are part fo the Belgarde ring. I lived in that area so I know it even from the birds eye view. :)

    Fantastic video as always Captain, really appreciate the quality of them, easily the best cockpit videos on TH-cam. I have a couple of questions if you don’t mind?
    On final you often will add between 1-5kts during the VLS check, how do you decide this and why?
    Also, when you perform the single engine taxi procedure, engine no 2 is always shut down in your videos, I noticed. Is it ever engine no 1? Thank you :)

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos

      Thanks for the good feedback! Please tell everybody about the channel!
      We compare the VLS on the PFD with the VLS on the MCDU. If the PFD VLS is higher, we add the difference to the approach speed in the MCDU.
      Single engine taxi is done on engine 1 because the right system also has an electric hydraulic pump, which we switch on. This keeps the PTU off.

    Twice in a row you’ve had such a quiet frequency that you’ve had to radio check! 😂
    Interesting to hear that pilots take an active part in ensuring services are in place for passengers who use wheelchairs. It makes sense for safety reasons to know, but I’d always assumed making sure there was assistance in place would be a purely customer service thing.
    Looked like a nice landing to a rather damp runway. Cool to see such a displaced threshold, by the size of the plane lining up behind I’m guessing it’s down to wing overhang?
    After getting to see you briefing at a desk, it’s a nice surprise to get to see it during a turnaround and your interaction with the Dispatcher.

      Thanks for sharing your comprehensive comment!
      Sometimes it is so quiet on the frequncy that we want to make sure that we are still on the right frequency.
      A displaced threshold this long is always something special. Lots of aiports have displaced thresholds, but most only for 100 meters or 300 feet or so.
      Thanks again and have a nice day!

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos

      The flight came from Duesseldorf in Germany. The detailed information is also available in the video description. Whenever possible, we start the descent at the ideal top of descent. This is the point at which we can do the descent with almost idle power and add only a little power to fly a stabilized approach at 1000 feet.

    • @HobbyPlayground

      @ApproachandDepartureVideos Thanks for this answer. Recently, I was coming back from Hurghada to Belgrade and the pilot announced and started descending just before we entered Serbia. It seems to me like too long distance and too much time lost. This explains it for me.
      I am just a person interested in flying and planes, knowing some things learned from my interest. I searched a bit trough Google and some forums, but couldn't find the answer.
      Thank you very much!

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      From the cruise altitude with idle power to about 1000 feet above the airport, we need roughly 100 to 130 nautical miles to get rid of the altitude with idle power. The exact distance is based on the wind, the weight and the cruise altitude.

    Great video again, Captain. Do you think you could have started to slow down a bit earlier, like 15nm out from the runway threshold? It would have saved you from using speedbrakes. Once Captain Joe said, rule of thumb is 200 at 10, 190 at 9, 180 at 8 and so on.

    • @freestate228
      @freestate228 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      They talked exactly about that after landing. Due to the bad weather coming in from behind the airport, they decided to keep the speed up and get the plane on the ground asap.

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks for your good feedback! Here, we wanted to land before the weather got closer to the airport. So we flew a little faster. In general, the perfect approach energy wise is an approach with idle power from the cruise level to a little before 1000 feet without using the speed brakes.

      Thanks for your good feedback! For the VLS check, we compare the VLS on the PFD with the VLS on the MCDU. If the VLS on the PFD is higher, we add the difference to the approach speed on the MCDU.

    It was so pleasant to hear you and Number one's conversation not being made inaudible because of ATC chatter to other aircraft, I'm not sure if you did this or it was simply because there was less traffic, anyway it was very enjoyable. As always a great approach, the landscape reminded me of a Salvador Dali painting with all its shapes and colours, really beautiful to see. Thank you.

      Thank you very very much for your helpful feedback and your important support of the channel as a member! Currently, I am working on the audio and video setup. I am testing different camera settings and locations and even different audio recording options. Here we had two advantages: The audio recording improved a lot and had way less background noise than before. In addition, it was also very quiet on the ATC radio frequency because of only very little traffic. Have a wonderful day!

      @@samkitty5894 You can fly any airplane (even a single engine Cessna) which is approved for instrument flight without looking out of the windows. You need to see something during takeoff and landing, but the rest can be done via the instruments. Good piloting skills are required to fly the plane with and without instruments. Sure, often we use the autopilot. But we have to be able to fly without autopilot, even with defective systems. And landings and takeoffs are also done manually unless it is an autoland approach in dense fog. @@ApproachandDepartureVideos That is my point. Pilots of today don't need to know the basics about aviation like the old time pilots that could feel the plane and the weather in their hands. Today's pilots behave like they are inside a simulator...trying to determine what button to press at what time. Honestly, anyone can learn to do that... and according to many TH-cam videos "anyone" is flying today's commercial planes.

      @@samkitty5894 You are completely wrong here! Pilots of today still need the stick and rudder skills. The same skills which were always required to fly airplanes. In addition, they need to be able to understand and work with modern aviation computer technology in airplanes like the Airbus. Yes, as an instructor, I can tell somebody who is no pilot via the phone how to get a fully functional Airbus on a runway equipped with autoland capability.
