  • Does early planting get you tomatoes sooner? When is the right time to plant tomatoes? Tomatoes and frost dates? The soil temperature is important for tomatoes. Should you resist the urge and plant early?

This was me in my 1st few yrs of gardening, so much time and headache plus heart ache of running around in the evenings covering plants and uncovering in the am and your so right when it's time it's time. If the ground isn't warm enough they just sit there. I lost about 40 plants to frost a few yrs ago the weather will fool u. Great video I hope more young gardeners will see this .

Good advice! I am in Mich 6b and I decided to do an experiment for next season. I made a list of Early Season (55 to 70 days, {transplanted to the garden as 6 week old plants}) and Mid Season tomatoes (70 to 80 days). I want to see if some chosen few early, somewhat cold hardy varieties can be just as flavorful as the Late Season summer varieties without waiting so long!😊

Something I am going to try this year is starting another batch of seeds now, and as soon as they germinate, plant them outdoors. Every noticed how those rogue tomatoes do as well, or better than any we coddle inside, or outside. :)

I live in Brisbane Queensland Australia, we are fortunate to not get frosts...though it does get cold for a couple weeks haha I keep my tomatoes in pots and put them in the greenhouse

A greenhouse must be wonderful. My yard just has too much slope for a greenhouse with out doing a lot of work to make a level spot. Makes for great drainage though so always a bright side.

@@djrramsey it’s just the small cheap ones with the plastic cover but seems to do the trick. We just had a lot of rain and have puddles in the lawn, your slopes definitely has a positive haha

Getting them out too late sets you back also if they become root bound. Found out the hard way last year.

I have a suggestion for you grow them inside not outside.
The weather has been changing all the time over the past year. Safest to grow indoors. You can also preserve them so you will have tomatoes all year round

it's the last week of April, it's been in the 40's, I'm holding off from putting the [lants in the garden. I'm going to keep moving the plants inside at night until we consistently get least in the mid to upper 50's. Thx for the conformation.

I planted the first 12 tomatoes today April 25, here in Lawrenceville GA. Looks like this might be our last morning down near 40F

@@GrowAndEatThis I'm next door in Upstate, SC. Forecast still calling for a mix of 40's n 50's. I don't think I've ever set out plants this late. Usually set out around 4/15. I'm think the temps may be right by 5/15.

I am not much of a tomato fan. In fact none of the nightshade family really have much appeal. Brassicas about the same. Melons are my thing, berries, root vegetables and tubers.
