From what I understand, Paris smells so much like crap already that it would seem that people have been doing that for a long time already anyhow.
I think the only thing that they should worry about next is the rampant cigarette smoke, reportedly so bad that foreigners have a hard time coping and the extreme amounts of literal dog crap on the sidewalk.
You would have to go to a 3rd world country to encounter a more disgusting city than Paris. The Japanese government has a hotline for citizens at their embassy for those tourists from Japan suffering from culture shock due to the dirty, smelly and rude nature of the people in Paris.
Truth stinks. But I wouldnt worry about the river as much. Much more work to be done with the sidewalks and people it would seem.

If Paris didn’t think they could accommodate hosting an Olympics, they never should have bid for it. At the very least, the athletes should be able to have air-conditioning in their housing. And the Seine River sounds like it’s been an ongoing problem for 100 years. I feel sorry for those participating. Doesn’t sound like a fun time at all.

All the rankings call out Indian rivers for being the most polluted, but that's overall mass of waste in the rivers, but if you count waste density per cubic meter of water, you'll mostly find Western rivers, or Chinese ones. Even in total mass of waste, Chinese rivers like Yellow and Yangtze are up there, plus the Communist Party isn't known for truthful reporting.
