About 8 years ago some scammer tried to convince me that I'd been in a really bad car accident. When I told him, nope, he said that the accident was so bad that I lost my memory about it; but he can help me claim compensation. I was half tempted to see how far the rabbit hole went; but I need to wipe my arse so I end the call.

So many of these scammers have only a very tenuous grasp of English, some others are just very stupid (I do not conflate the two), but a very, very large amount of them, if you sound to be anything other than an elderly and potentially demented easy mark, they want to move on based on and find an easy mark
This was an atypical case and operation, but a few years back, a student who came to the USA from India set up a phone scam center here - a big mistake, doing this within the FBIs jurisdiction and reach. They got caught, dismantled, charged and ???
To the point, this particular operation didn't even attempt to scam anybody who didn't sound elderly. Young voice, they hung up
Others, the majority of such operations that are run out of India or Pakistan or thereabouts, are not quite as extreme, they don't stick to this as a rule the way this one scam center did... But most all of them are mostly oriented towards seeking elderly folks as their primary marks
My point is, any kind of unexpected or atypical response gets them iffy about you right off the bat, few have the ability to riff off of anything but a confused and scared old person who just wants to comply and resolve whatever fake problem exactly as they're being told to
That said, I'm not being critical of Sam here. You can be funny and lose them quickly, or you can strategically toy with them in a way that keeps them on the line longer, but it's no fun and doesn't produce a funny bit the way this did.
I am offering these insights for folks at home who may wish to mess with scammers a bit, which I always support. Any time they're wasting with you, is time they aren't scamming some poor elderly person out of their Social Security.
I had a scammer call me the other day and instantly get into some script about how they'd provided me security in the past, but had to cancel the contract I'd supposedly paid for already - a so-called refund scam.
The scammer asked me about my internet connection and how many devices were on it.
I responded that I do not have a wireless router and in detail.explained how out of security concerns, my internet it wired and only my desktop is connected to it - and my phones use mobile data, I have no laptops etc.
Explaining with this level of detail, you know you're speaking to so done who knows what they're saying is correct
The guy was completely unable to deviate from his script, he immediately went to, "sir, I don't know why you're lying to me about this, because I was on your case personally 8 months ago and I know from then that you have a wireless router that your phones connect to."
It just threw me off so bad, like dude, WHY WOULD YOU EVER SAY THAT? Watch ONE Google video in improv or something. Pause for one second and think about how to respond and alter your scam however slightly to make it work... But why would you EVER jump straight to calling me a liar about something I am obviously certain about?
Then again, if these folks had a bit more common sense, they might have had more success finding a job that doesn't revolve around stealing bread from the mouths of poor, helpless elders.
There have been times where I felt that maybe they saw conditions that forced them to work these scummy jobs, but damn, I have been truly desperate, in my own entirely since I was a teenager, stuck in an affluent city where the housing costs were so high, and the entry level wages so low, that I'd have to somehow bend physics in some way that'd allow me to work six full-time jobs to simply earn enough to be able to live anywhere.
I had to do criminal things to earn a living, but never anything that hurt people, let alone the vulnerable... Just cut some fat off of corporations and such
