You’re being slept on my dude. This is the most mechanically focused and detailed review and explanation of this game I’ve seen. I watched tons of reviews trying to get a feel for this but all anyone had to say was ‘many powers, much thematic’ - pure fluff
I agree... This is the best in depth explanation of this game and it's mechanics... After reading the book and watching this, I feel a little better of running this game for people.
"Imbalance isn't a bug it's a feature. This is an Asymmetrical game" That told me all I needed to know, and I bought a copy. Marvel being Marvel means that not everything is watered down, equaled out. Sometimes heros or villains are outclassed but they fight their best anyways. And certain characters are on another level than others, no matter how many fans they have. This is part of the secret sauce that makes Marvel great, and makes stories feel true to an actual universe, and not cheap PLOT ARMOR cop-outs left and right. That Marvel was not afraid to let this shine in their RPG model is a BIG selling point for me. Where balance is needed, you could simply limit certain nights' adventures to only certain ranks, or enforce a system where players should play a variety of ranks and not always go for a demigod tier.
This is an excellent overview. You cover the mechanics and the tone. Well done! As GrognardPiper noted, you may want to increase your volume significantly for future videos.
Really appreciate the honest in-depth review. Especially as someone who does not read dense material well. And respect someone not getting compensation for passion. #subscribe
I love the insights here. I always try to find how a system wants to be run, and your advice on failure conditions and when not to call for rolls are exactly the kind of knowledge I crave. Fantastic analysis!
SO incredibly spot on, thank you. In basic terms, the game reminds me of something between D&D and action RPG video games, with super heroes of course. I personally like it a lot and agree with your analysis. I LOVED Marvel Heroic RPG (2013), but that game was also meant for interactive narration (which is good) as well as increased character balancing. I like the way this one has more overt "tiers" of heroes, as well as distinctive specializations. Would you say that if there are objects nearby a character should also be able to Skulk behind them to avoid hits, with the object having a melee defense of either 10 (since it wasn't the original target), or even 0?
@@WorldofGameDesign I hear you. Honestly, I'm just trying to figure out how the lower-level agile characters of the world (Daredevil, Beast, Iron Fist, etc.) stay out of the way of the heaviest of hitters... guys like Thing, Juggernaut, Hulk, etc.
Hey I just wanted to say that you produce some really helpful primer videos for learning new tabletop RPGs! After watching your video on Mothership, my friends had a great time when I ran the introductory one-shot adventure. While getting ready to play this superhero game, this is the best intro video I’ve come across. Liked and subscribed my man! 😊👍🍻
The big challenge that I have with the Powers section is that Flight 1 and Speed 1 are inaccessible to Rank 1 heroes. This means that a beginning character like Lightspeed from Power Pack wouldn't be able to be created. There should be Rank 1 options for these powers.
Having played Mutants & Masterminds, I recognize a lot of the same philosophy in this and I approve. Gotta disagree with Black Widow's character sheet though. Distinguishing Feature shouldn't be "None" but rather "Luscious red hair", but that's just me. Love that she has Slow-motion Dodge as a power though. :P Happy to hear the Fastball Special is in the game.
Were you running a Marvel Multiverse table at NYCC? I'm pretty sure my gf and I sat in at your last table on Sunday and you totally sold us on the game. We're excited to learn the rules and talk our friends in to it. Cool to run into your lesson online.
Fantastic video buddy, thank you! subbed. Balancing in RPG game is the highest bulls**t possible. They lost me on design here when i saw 60 Health points.. nah, when i see HP in a role playing game...
Question: Is throwing someone or something based off of Melee, like how the ability descriptions say it's used for punching or throwing, or is it based off of Agility, as suggested in the description of the Fastball Special reaction?
So if a power uses a different stat to attack (Penance Stare being an ego attack for example) does that mean it goes against the attacking stats' defense unless it specifies otherwise?
It does not come with a story, no. Though there is a short adventure on their website. There's a big adventure book coming out in the next couple of months, and more slated for after that. As far as whether it's good for beginners, I would say yes, but not for kids under 13 unless they have an adult to help guide them through some of the more intricate mechanics.
I wish you would compare and contrast this game a bit more to other superhero games and not D&D:/ For telling superhero stories, this game, at first impression, seems a bit restricted and clunky to me. I loved the cinematic way Marvel Heroic handled it, or the narrative approach that Masks, Truth & Justice or Atomic Robo is going for... I am a bit curous about how it handles though, but seeing defined powers with set distances and so on, rarely work in a supers game for me:/
I do love the imbalance that I am seeing in this game, mutants for example should not be the same rank. The X men would have never worked if they were the same power rank.
I am confused, is it just a guide book? IS there a set of figures or cards or anything to help out? Or is marvel being cheap, per usual and just making a book with rules and making you come up with it?
No cards or figures. This is an RPG in the same vein as Dungeons & Dragons. You can definitely use your Marvel heroclick miniatures or something like that if you want, but it also works very well without them.

Couldn't agree more. Enjoy your copy!
Played the TSR Marvel RPG when I was a teen. Picked up a copy of this yesterday so I can share it with my 13 year old. Thanks for covering this

Thank you very much. I'll definitely keep the video volume in mind.
I had a blast playing it today with you! You were right about Luke cage! I took 4 damage while everyone else took like 30 lol!
He's a beast, for sure.
I love that instead of advantage you have edge, as i love edging

I feel like Skulk is specifically for other characters, but to each his own.

I was! Thank you for picking up a book. I travel all over the country and get to teach a lot of people different systems.
FASERIP is the classic supers genre game. This seems like one heck of a potential successor.
5 min in and very well said so far ❤❤

Okay dude, great vid. But you need to work on the Audio. Even at Max volume through headphones I have issues hearing you.

hulk dont need stealth
Well, often when in the woods after leaving a rampage, Hulk often is very quiet and stealthy.
Great review
Thank you very much
nice ill sub!
Thanks!
What rank would Batman be?
Hehe. Hard to say...depends on the variant, but I would put him in the Rank 4 category.
Win condition ?
In an rpg ?
youre a superhero, heroes fail (gwen's death in the comics)
So I know I am dating myself with this but... Does a 6+6+Marvel mean Aunt May can kill Galactus with a spoon still?
I do love the imbalance that I am seeing in this game, mutants for example should not be the same rank. The X men would have never worked if they were the same power rank.
so they just basically stole Hero points from Mustangs and Masterminds for the "Troubles?"

Why explain everything through the D&D lense and through D&D terminology. That's not helpful at all in my opinion.
