Nighttime Lake Exploration: You'll Never Unsee What We Discovered!

  • Wow. This was a creepfest and a half. Never before in my life have I seen so many huge, disgusting and utterly repulsive creatures swirling in the lake waters late at night. I think if I had taken a swim there, I would have been a goner or at least had a heart attack once I got out. Yet... they are beautiful creatures in their own way.

    In Minnesota we use a coffee can with holes filled with bait. You can get a ton of jumbo leeches for fishing. I've seen them get up to 6 or 7 inches long. There harmless. That was cool watching them swim.

    This is Kepvalley Wife. My grandfather used to go into those type of lakes around Magnetawan and come out covered in them. They would then roll them off and go fishing with them. As a kid I used to catch them at the cottage and play with them.

    That bug on the turkey leg is actually a dragonfly nymph. They can live in the water for 1-4 years. When we usually don't see them to much in that form. We see them when they take flight to mate, which is nearing the end of their life cycle.

    Just thought I'd let you all know, we have the most polluted lakes in Northern Ontario here. (As in 4000x the amount of arsenic acceptable by the Canadian government as "safe") This lake (Brady lake) is no exception. There are 3 mines around it in a triangle, tailings dumped into it by all 3.. where they were camping is 100' from a shaft and on waste rock that continues into the lake. Across at the end of the video is another mine. There are no fish in there, just leaches, frogs, minnows and whatever insects. Oh and birds.. but they just come to eat.

    • @kepvalley
      @kepvalley 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      One of the unfortunate legacies of past mining activity. BTW leeches are very hardy and tolerant of pollution.

      Oh man, that brings back a memory. My wife and I were in a canoe at a lake by Chapleau and we could see little wakes in the calm water. We thought it might be snakes or fish or something, but it was leeches. They were so disgusting. My wife never swam again in that lake.

    My old man spent WWII, fighting his was through the Burmese jungle as part of the "Forgotten 14th Army." The one thing he hated the most was the leeches. He said they could get through the laceholes in your boots, his socks were always sodden with sweat and blood, at the end of the day his mates and himself would burn off those leeches attatched to their bodies with a lit cigarette. Gruesome in a fascinating way aren't they!!!!! 🤢

    Oh man! You guys kill me. 😄 LOL!
    I wish we still had leeches in Lake Simcoe. They are really hard to find now. It sucks because they are awesome bait for fish. I used to “pick leeches” on shorelines before going our for the day fishing. If I was where you guys were, I would be setting out a leech trap before going fishing. That is an awesome place for them.
    But ya....I would not go for midnight skinny dip there or anything like that 😆
    I loved the loon call at the end 😁

    oh your literally giving me flashbacks. back in the day was invited to do some late night wading with a friend in a small local stream (with no mention of leaches mind you). waded for a couple hours enjoying the cold on a hot evening. left and went to a dennys to go eat for an hour and a half. got home looked down at my white sneakers and exclaimed "why the hell is my sneaker pink?!?!?!?" took it off and there was a big, fat, engorged leach on the side of my toe. kind freaked out and flipped my foot away from me, and it was so engorged it just let go!!!! stomped on it leaving a bit blood spot on the carpet with my other foot. had my friend check my back where i couldnt see or reach for more, then ran into the bathroom and checked "other regions" post haste, luckily finding no more. then proceeded to take 3 long hot showers. the little bastard had pumped so many anticoagulant into my toe it bleed for about 25 more minutes. still makes me twitch today to even think about it. uuuugggggghhhhhh!!!!

    Holy Cow Chigg, I am so glad I didn't watch this before I went to bed, I would have had nightmares of those hideous things. That lake reminds me of one we had near our house as a kid. It too was deceptively beautiful, but full of leeches. It reminds me of a thing a neighbor kid of ours said when we told him to beware of the leeches in the lake. He said, "I don't mind leeches, it's those bloodsuckers I can't stand." When we heard him say it we cracked up laughing. Apparently he didn't know the name leech and had only heard them called bloodsuckers. Thanks Chigg for bringing back childhood memories, albeit creepy ones, I hadn't thought of in years. ha ha ha You never cease to amaze me at the things you see and share. Have a great day!
