A short row heel using pins instead of the usual wrap and turn. Newer sock knitters may find this method easier and veterans will enjoy the tidy turns.

I'm trying to learn as much as I can before trying to make a worsted weight sock and of all the heel techniques and different instructors this makes it the clearest and easiest. Definitely my choice for my first pair. I'm doing circular for the first time after lifetime of straight needles and Magic Loop to boot. I need all the help I can get! :) Thanks!

This one came out very nice, despite my 2 (?) mistakes and having to rip it out more than once. Ach! Hopefully I'll still remember what I learned when I get to the second sock.
I have yet to knit a sock... somehow i find my comprehension blocked when going through any "simple" sock pattern. Maybe it's a bit of a mental coordination problem from handling the needles in addition to heel construction... so i will start with baby socks... and make as many to the point of construction comprehension. Thanks for showing this lesson on a baby sock... and walking us through each step. That was helpful.
Being my first time to try one, I'm not sure but do you still have to do the gusset before the heel (a toe up pattern I've seen for worsted does that and then a different type heel which I'd substitute out for yours. ? Thanks
i just made socks ( toe up with German short row heel), want to try it as soon as i Finnish my chunky socks, well the Q i got is did you say you can do this method on toe up and cuff down and is the method the same ?
for a 64 stitch sock .then 32 for the heel.please how many pins do you use.thanks sheree love your video and want to use this.looks like maybe 10 plain stitches in the middle? so 10 on each side ??thanks sheree
Hello again. I just worked the second heel and even though I was very careful to follow your instructions, I ended up with some bigger gaps on the side where the purls were done. Can't bear ripping it out, though. Any ideas? Also, I want to clarify, even though you slip the first stitch when you are doing the decreases, you do not slip the first stitch when you are adding the stitches back in. Is that right?
Excellent tutorial! The filming was very clear. If you used this technique on a toe, would you feel the ridges caused by the wrap? Or for that matter, do you feel them on the heel?
Question: after you pick up the pin and place the yarn on the left needle, you knit (or purl) the two stitches together, I get that part no pblm, then you turn and knit (or purl) that same stitch again. wouldn't it be better to slip that stitch after turning rather than working it twice? I did that and found its even tighter and neater but does this mess up the count or pattern? what do you think? hope my question makes sense! thanks.
+Kate From Ca N/A The method I use does work it twice. When you slip the stitch it is elongated and more obvious. If your method works better for you with the way you knit then it is just fine to do so.
+Bonnie D, as a rule the heel is knitted across 1/2 of sock stitches, 32 in your case. Divide the 32 stitches into three= 11 stitches up on one side, 10 in the middle, 11 up the other side of the heel.
Ok, I am unclear about this as well. So anytime you are making a sock, you have the heel stitches halved from the whole amount, then always divide by a third? She had 16 on the heel needle, how do you decide the divisions? She had 3 markers on each side. I don't understand it.
Do you always start by knitting to the last stitch on the needle for any size sock heel? I wonder because with short row heels the number seems to vary, for example, sometimes it starts with K17 W&T, or K13 W&T, or K some other number W&T. It hasn't always been the same number for every sock I knit. Does that make sense?

No gusset needed in a short row heel.

As a new sock knitter, how would I figure out how many pins to do if I have 64 total stitches on magic loop?
