- Big JP and I fished a tournament on the St Lawrence River out of Clayton New York and had a decent finish! The most amazing part of the event was the when Dan and Matt from Great Lakes Finesse and used a bait that I helped design to win with over 32 pounds for 5! How do you release large smallmouth like this after the tournament? Are they just released at the dock? What is the rate of attrition? Not PETA or anything. Just a curious fisherman not sure I would want to see a tournament near me if trophies were being pulled off beds unless they get back into the water alive.
There is a release boat that drives them out into the lake

@@hoplite2247 Used to hate that bass season is closed during the spawn here in this part of Canada but I've grown to appreciate it.
@@jeremyowen1 Probably crucial in lakes that ice up. Watching these guys pick 6 pounders off of beds to be released hours later in another part of the lake doesn't sound like sound management.

Dude, using that cone thing, then yelling set it. I was on the fucking ground be careful the cone doesn’t become permanently attached to your head forever. It can happen. Good luck, y’all.
I have no problem with bed fishing but tournaments should ban it until we know that pulling the largest fish off of beds every year does not impact the health of a population.
I completely agree, bed fishing is fine when you take a quick pic, weigh it, and release it quickly. However, when you catch them and take them away from their beds It certainly impacts the eggs that the fish was guarding. On bodies of water like St. Lawrence that have gobies, it is even more important that you release them quickly because gobies will eat all the eggs in a matter of minutes. John Whyte from time on the water has a video up on his channel that shows how quickly gobies eat the eggs from a bed.
I have a problem with all bed fishing even fun fishing
@@andyb2604 The problem is removing the huge fish from their bed and keeping them for weigh-in. An immediate release will put them right back on the bed. Kidnapping them kills that entire hatch and all of those eggs are from the largest, strongest fish the pros spend days spotting. In northern lakes that ice over and only see one spawn... My gut tells me this ends badly.

Certainly see your point. Everyone has different feelings and emotions around activities in all aspects of life. I found it’s best to concentrate on those activities that you enjoy and try not to worry what others do.
