There's a Karate sensei (2dan black belt) on youtube who reacted to this series and it's a very interesting perspective to listen to. He actually mentions how the actors who play Hawk and Robbie are the most skilled in the cast. Also fun to note, that Johnny is actually a better fighter than Daniel, which I believed might have been already mentioned on the couch. Fun reactions for those who also care to get a breakdown of the karate (and what isn't Karate), as well as a bit of cultural perspective from that of a Japanese person.
Well then he's not a real Black Belt. My bf was a Karate Sensei for 20 years, he told me that Hawk's technique is skewed VS Robby. Robby's textbook. Johnny is most certainly NOT a better fighter than Daniel, he's stunted af. Robby has a higher belt in RL than Johnny's actor does.

In a tournament environment it's not good sportsmanship, but when you're truly fighting to protect yourself, you should find any advantage you can. To do something like that simply for a trophy and revenge is petty, at least to me. the yell people do in Japanese Martial Arts is called a "kiai". Race has nothing to do with it. kiai is the convergence of your energy. When you shout it, you're releasing your stored energy.
I do not know if you are aware, but Phillip and Simon Rhee are the fight instructors for this show. They teach Tang-Soo Do and Tae-Kwon Do. They were both in 1 of my favorite martial arts films, Best of the Best, which would be kind of cool if you guys reacted to that movie, so you can at least get a sense of how they fight. What I always found funny about this episode and also, other future episodes of this show is I can easily believe by how Johnny's students fight, that he taught them. But, it never looks "real" and believable to me by the way Daniel's student fight that he was their instructor. Even the short instances we saw Sam showed some fight techniques in this season, I could never believe she learned that from her father. As far as I know, I think the kid who plays Hawk is the only person who was very skilled in martial arts prior to this show. If I am not mistaken, I think he also said he knows multiple styles. It is real interesting how everybody's "Kia" sounds different. Some people literally yell "Kyah", while others are more like "Hiah" and still others yell "Aiyah" or even more like "Hasaah". The point is it is just a sudden release of energy and sound at the moment of impact, similar to grunting while weightlifting can help give you a sudden bust of energy as you release air from your lungs. It can be very dangerous to hold your breath and can cause hernias if you do that, even though many people do. Believe it or not, people have to be told and taught how to breathe properly when exercising and be told to not hold your breath.
Well considering that Johnny doesn't know how to fight or teach, I'm not surprised that you donn't know what you're talking about. You're wrong about the people that have prior MA experience too. Hawk's belt (IRL) is LOWER than Robby's. Robby's a purple belt, which is ABOVE both Hawk and Johnny's actors. Man you post a lot of words to say a whole lot of nothing!
0:28 Shouting out loud during martial arts is an actual thing. It’s a way of expelling energy when you attack. Totally not racist unless you mean it to be racist!
I originally thought the Robby character was completely cheesy when he was under the teaching of Daniel-san, but damn if he hasn't become my absolute favorite character in the entire series.
This show punches way above its weight, for a show that looks like its filmed out of any old back lot in Hollywood next to the soap opera's it has better writing than 90% of shows in existence and the heart that disney wish starwars had. It's way better than it ought to be 😅
You're not being racist LOL I studied martial arts (karate) throughout my school years and yes we did kiai! I live in Japan and people here who dont practice karate also do it to mess around. Nice reaction by the way lol
That is not classified as being racist, people really need to look up the definition of racism. man that bothers me, just classifying everything as racist these days, it just completely diminishes the word when something actually racist happens.
Kiya is actually what you say. Ive been doing martial arts for 24 years. Its not said all dramatically but more often its done like a yelp. The only time you would prolong it is for effect while doing kata or forms
Wait wait guys we need to get our facts in order about Miguel’s assumptions: 1. Sam ignores his calls all day 2. He becomes curious goes to her house and sees her having dinner with her family and Robby 3. Asks her point blank what did you yesterday? SHE LIES! 4. Then Sam’s phone is gone and Miguel again thinks she’s ignoring her calls 5. Finally when he sees her shes HOLDING HANDS with ROBBY coming down to the beach. Miguel’s anger in a state of inebriation hell any teenage man in normal state that anger is perfectly rationale. Hitting Sam was an accident he was going for Robby. Can’t get mad at Miguel.
You absolutely can be mad because his actions were not in any way moral or justified, understandable yes but not correct, still he needed to make the mistake to learn from it
Miguel has listened unquestioningly to Johnny about everything so far, and everything Johnny has taught him up until now has benefited Miguel. So, when Johnny told Miguel to watch out for the Larussos, and then it seems that Sam has been untruthful, just like Johnny warned, he assumes the worse.
"Kyaaa" is somewhat made up by movies, or because of some of Bruce Lee's over-the-top shouts. In Karate, there is an energy shout which is called a kiai, but the noise you make isn't actually "kiai!" (and certainly not "yah!"). Depending on the person making it, it sounds more like "hei!" or "huy!" (kinda like you did at 6:16 ).

Just got home from work. Changed into the comfy comfs and slid into bed with snacks to see what TH-cam has to offer. I was not disappointed.
Do NOT stop doing it!
I think Daniel mom was at the first tournament.
I think she was.
COBRA KAI: Masterclass on expanding a popular story.
I originally thought the Robby character was completely cheesy when he was under the teaching of Daniel-san, but damn if he hasn't become my absolute favorite character in the entire series.
I can't wait for you guys to watch the finale of season 2. It's just mind blowing
Keep doing it.
Johnny is finally like, "how the turntables"
Cobra Kai is Netflix's best anime
This show punches way above its weight, for a show that looks like its filmed out of any old back lot in Hollywood next to the soap opera's it has better writing than 90% of shows in existence and the heart that disney wish starwars had.
It's way better than it ought to be 😅
The Kresse entrance is always soooooo iconic🙌🏾🙌🏾
I made some cookies for Pat he reminds me of my grandson
You're not being racist LOL I studied martial arts (karate) throughout my school years and yes we did kiai! I live in Japan and people here who dont practice karate also do it to mess around. Nice reaction by the way lol
You’re not being racist. You guys crack me up.
Signed,
A Brown Guy
Also. Karate participation medal recipient here, also. 😂
You may wanna double episode on these up now. The anticipation is unbearable! 👊
Love watching everones reaction such a really good show, can't wait till you get into season 2.
That is not classified as being racist, people really need to look up the definition of racism. man that bothers me, just classifying everything as racist these days, it just completely diminishes the word when something actually racist happens.
Define racism then in your words
@@superstinssuperstin3126treating one race superior to another
Hope u enjoyed..this show gets better and better. Season by Season..
Lmao he said if you pay us we will stop being racist 😂
Kiya is actually what you say. Ive been doing martial arts for 24 years. Its not said all dramatically but more often its done like a yelp. The only time you would prolong it is for effect while doing kata or forms
Watching Bert fight was like watching the Mighty Ducks play Team Iceland, those guys were clearly 30.
The way Kreys was in the shadows the first time I saw that I was thinking man it's the devil, but I know who it was
Season 2 is going to rock your world
Yea season 2 definitely rocked my world.
Can't wait for season 2 finale... Madness
Can't wait to see their reaction for season 3 where you know who annihilated you know who...
20:00 At first I thought he called him Cherry Silver! 😂🍒
I cannot wait till you watch next season!
I've been a martial artist my whole life and no. That sound is not fucking racist.
Wait wait guys we need to get our facts in order about Miguel’s assumptions:
1. Sam ignores his calls all day
2. He becomes curious goes to her house and sees her having dinner with her family and Robby
3. Asks her point blank what did you yesterday? SHE LIES!
4. Then Sam’s phone is gone and Miguel again thinks she’s ignoring her calls
5. Finally when he sees her shes HOLDING HANDS with ROBBY coming down to the beach.
Miguel’s anger in a state of inebriation hell any teenage man in normal state that anger is perfectly rationale.
Hitting Sam was an accident he was going for Robby. Can’t get mad at Miguel.
true
Sam had her confiscated, she WANTED to talk to him but was UNABLE to.
If you choose to drink regardless of age whatever happens is on you. Accident or not.
Just waiting for one of yall to scream QUIET!
Ralph macho kept the yellow car after the original movies, and yeah season 2 may have the best final ending in the series
What's Navi talking about? Daniel's mom was at the tournament. The literally had shots of her there. Even Daniel's neighbor Freddy was there.
I don’t think making a grunting sound straight out of legend of Zelda could possibly be considered racist people are way too sensitive nowadays
