@dannyb9209 The ending, in general, was a cluster F! The only way I can explain it is that there are two timelines happening concurrently at the same time, and Cloud is the only one who is experiencing both timelines at the same time. Which is why he can still see an alternate Aerith who is still alive, while the other characters can not.
My defenses were already down by the end of the Barrett trial, and then the Aerith one came in and destroyed me. I cant believe how well that sequence was orchestrated.
Seeing caleb cry makes me respect him even more since he gets it, even if he doesn't agree with everything in the game. But he understands the core of it and the characters. He isn't a mindless hater like his chat.

I agree. Everyone mad at the ending needs to go watch it again. It's actually masterfully put together and leaves a lot of questions and great story telling for part three. But I'd bet a large amount of people who react negatively to it didn't play through the game or give it any critical thinking. Which is fine if you don't want too, but to spam that this ending is bad is very shortsighted. But to each their own I guess. Part 3 gonna be a wild ride.

It sets a lot of question marks for part 3 as well as Cloud's mental state, plus the feeling of emptiness it gives you in the ending. Sure I understand people that are mad at the Aerith's scene and the entire sequence not being the way they wanted it to be, but I believe it's done for a reason and that we'll get the actual scene in Part 3. Because let's be honest, we've seen Cloud blocking out his speech in Rebirth, as well as glimpses of the lake scene in Remake's ending, so eventually it's all gonna come around. Right now, the focus of the ending was Cloud, how he doesn't have a Limit Break while everyone's mad to the point where they're just ready to go all out from the starting of the Jenova Fight. The Sephiroth Reborn fight was something I'd say was perfect but it didn't belong here right now. Sephiroth isn't always meant to be the Final Boss because the players are getting too used to him and this is before the Northern Crater. Other than that, saying Nomura ruined it is just childish. The Remake series is legit one of the best Final Fantasies and games as a whole I've played in my life

People just don't understand about the word remake, that just means its made from the ground up including its story plot, the devs can adopt a plot from 1997 but they've included a twist because they can't call it a new game for nothing. Since this is a new game, you gotta understand it again from the ground up. Its not like you're going to know it right away because of the adopted plots from the OG. Just like in 1997, you just have to understand its plot since you don't know what's going to happen in the game.

This game is written by Nojima, who wrote the OG, and is produced by Kitase who directed the original. To say they don't know how to tell a good story is both wrong and a ridiculous statement. People loved FFXVI's story as well as this Remake/Rebirth series... Square is definitely doing things right as of late. That's not subjective, the ratings for both games show it, overwhelmingly positive across the board in both public and critic reviews. People are loving these games, yet a minority online bubble which you seem to be a part of are incapable of appreciating the brilliant storytelling this game is offering. No one criticizing this game's plot could conjure up anything remotely as impressive as Nojima and his team have done. The ending was phenomenal, they couldn't have ended this game in a better way. People wanted the original plot yet this game is very new hence its called a RE:MAKE than a RE:MASTER. Some people really wanted to connect all the story plots from the 1997 but it won't happen since this isn't a remastered game. Wonder what the third game will be called since the second is Rebirth, it could be Rebuild or Re:verse. This is just a thought, they might be going to restore the timeline at the end of part 3 hence Aerith will be permanently dead and will be at the lifestream like in Advent Children, Zack is also dead, and returning everything to what once was at least that's what I'm thinking since marlene is waiting in the original timeline. Returning to the original timeline will be now missing Aerith as a result.

It's not "high IQ" because they added 5 steps to the process, and not understanding isn't why I don't care anymore. I understood it, and what they've told me is that there are no rules and limitations to this fictional world anymore, because the multiverse makes anything possible, no matter how dumb and unbelievable it is. A guy dies 3 times, yet survives and drops into the final battle, gets a meteor dropped on his face and escapes through a portal. A character that was saved onscreen dies anyway cos other timeline lol, and we can just grab spare copies of world saving plot devices from the world next door if ours doesn't work, great. Why am I supposed to give a fuck about any of this? What happens is whatever random bs Nojima wants, instead of being a natural consequence of the events leading up to it, so why do I care what's happening on screen at any given moment?

The devs took inspiration to the light novel games where any decision could lead to a different path but only difference is that they went auto linear on a different path.
There’s definitely criticisms to have with the ending of Rebirth. Sure you could say “all of it will be fixed in part 3” but again till that happens people are allowed to dislike it.
Despite knowing there’s a third game, the ending of Rebirth is still extremely convoluted and fast-paced. The predominant emotion that most people will feel when the credits roll is confusion, so they are completely valid in criticising it.

@@xerpp2 Nah I don't think that the devs would use the multiverse as a fake out. In the Temple of the Ancients, the Cetra voice says that the "destroyer of worlds" will summon meteor. Sephiroth also later says that the black materia is "a key that unlocks its true counterpart hidden between worlds" It's genuine and will be further explained in Part 3.

Nomura quite literally said in the behind the scenes of Rebirth that there would be no meaning to a remake if it was one-to-one, he's the DIRECTOR of the entire trilogy, he approves the changes we see on screen, he only rejected Kitase and Nojima's ideas of bigger changes than that. But nice try spinning a other narrative without much evidence tho.

Personally I think this ending was good, if she just died like the original people would complain because the game has been teasing her possibly surviving, but if she survived the og purists would get angry that it didn’t happen and you don’t get that character moment, so they simply decided to go half and half, our aerith might be dead but cloud stopping that blow possibility saved 1 somewhere in those multiple worlds. And with Zack possibly making a return who’s to say she won’t. No matter what the ending was gonna be divisive just like remake.
The problem is Square Enix took a risk the moment they decided to go ahead with a remake to begin with. Once that happened, someone had to decide the answer to two basic questions: Why play a game that's nothing more than a rehash of the original? and Will we lose the FF7 OG fanbase if we decide to change the ending? But, considering all the twists and turns that have been sprinkled in, despite people being strongly of the opinion that "Aerith is dead....Period!", I'm of the opinion that there's going to be more nuance to the third chapter of the story.
Most fans are on board with the changes, but it's a bit of revisionism when people say "it would've been boring'. First, a lot of people who played this were entirely new to FF7. Second, all the clamour for a remake for years was self evidently predicated on the idea it was going to be an adaptation of the source material; that's why it was for a remake, not a sequel. How many people went into chapter 17 of Remake saying "Gee, this is boring. This needs multiverses", or got the game expecting a huge deviation from the original's core story, realistically? Also '100% on board with the changes' and 'OG purist mad it isn't shot for shot the same' aren't the only two opinions that exist; why do peoples' feelings about stuff have to be crammed into simple, inaccurate binaries?

I know I'm kind of fed up with multiverses after the Marvel Cinematic Universe got run into the ground. But, I think they did this in a fresh enough way that it's still easy enough to follow as long as you can catch certain things.
@@renegade637 The ability to follow it isn't my issue with it. There's a bunch of problems I have, but the main one is that Remake *immediately* does the two stupidest things you can possibly do with multiverses; A. Bring back dead characters B. Make the story *about* it rather than it just being a framing device. Rebirth then doubles down on this at the worst possible point in the story that it could, and establishes travel between worlds, alternate versions of characters fixing plot problems, AND establishes the alternate versions are in fact the *same* characters with their memories transferred over in some kind of quantum immortality. A is stupid because it establishes the precedent of the multiverse having limitless potential as a magic wand to fix any plot problem and undo anything bad that happens to the characters. Cause and effect are replaced by "I wanna", zero stakes. It doesn't even matter if it isn't used in a given situation, because I know it could be and that the writers are very willing to do so. B is stupid because in making it about the plot device, it both takes the focus off the characters and makes the author write their way into quicksand trying to explain it and keep it all straight, as the script gets bogged down in clunky exposition dumps that feel out of character. Which is exactly what happens in the last 2 chapters of both games, to Aerith and Red in Remake, and Sephiroth in Rebirth.

People need to listen to Sephiroth. He’s blatantly telling to plot flat and clear. We breach fates walls, it opens up millions of possibilities. “But they all fade” and we will only have the original flow of time. The difference is just like, he is using the alternate timelines or paths to build on the original story. They even said there’s no way this doesn’t end with leading into advent children. Cloud saved Aerith in terrier, sephiroth merged the worlds and then fed off of the rage and emotion that was the result. Just like he was to use meteor to damage the planet and absorb the lifestreams effort to repair it. He’s using the merging of worlds now too for the same purpose. There’s a reason they keep showing us sephiroth absorbing meteor. People seem to be focusing on the differences of the games rather than seeing sephiroth plain and clear plan. This is all building and building on one single thing. Clouds absolute mental breakdown. It has been doing that sine the very beginning of remake. Almost every line sephiroth said to him in the game was said to cloud by someone else in this game
He literally is and idk why so many people are ignoring it. He laid it out so clearly. The worlds are doomed to fade. It may be a “multiverse” but it’ll all flow back to the original timeline regardless. IMO this will make the lifestream sequence hit harder, because if it is confirmed by the next game that the Aerith we see is from a different timeline, then that Aerith will go back into the lifestream right? Then cloud will have to accept and come to terms with her death. THAT is when they’ll show the scene in full with cloud putting her in the water etc. Bold and ballsy move which did sacrifice some emotional weight from the end of this game, but if it pays off it’ll be worth it
Maybe I'm crazy, but I don't mind the ending for Rebirth Will be easier to judge after finishing my hard mode playthrough, and likely more after that but first impressions like 2 weeks after it I like the ending But I am also glad it isn't just a shot for shot remake of the OG for the most part, as much as I love the OG And hell, i'm sure once all 3 parts are out someone will make a mod that cuts out all the non-OG stuff from the trilogy
My thoughts aswell I think he's just like flat out in denial of the situation and part 3 will start with them trynna get through to him and him eventually breaking down when it catches up to him but that's just my take
No he isn't hallucinating. He IS going insane, yes, but he is going insane because he actually saved Aerith in ANOTHER timeline and through Sephiroth and Aerith he is now able to also see things/people from other timelines or the rift in the sky. So while he is under the impression that he saved her, he actually just created diverting timelines, one where he saved her and one where she actually dies, his timeline, just like the OG. What is fucking him up is that he is seeing the Aerith from the timeline in which he saved her, however that is not the timeline he is living in. In his timeline, Aerith still died. So he is not hallucinating because the Aerith he sees and talks to, just like the rift in the sky, are real however they don't exist in his timeline and that's what's so fucked up about this. He needs to come to terms that in HIS timeline, HIS Aerith is dead. He is not just leaving her behind temporarily, she is gone. He will go absolutely insane
When Cloud held Aerith in his arms, for a brief moment, Tifa could also see two timelines. One where Aerith was saved (no blood), and a timeline where Aerith died (blood).
Initially i thought that too but then it wouldn't make sense esp when Cloud literally knows about other world's existence. So my take is he did manage to save Aerith but just not in his world. That our Cloud is jumping ot confusing between his world and other worlds.
guess i'll just leave this here, but a bit of a theory i have about the end with the two results we see of cloud succeeding and failing to save her, I don't think these are separate time lines happening. I think what is happening is aerith is manipulating cloud's perspective of how things happened akin to what sephiroth does. Why would she do this, i think possibly its to postpone clouds loss of self and grief over her death. Tis a theory though and i may be way off base but given the way they use flickering the same way it happens when sephiroth is screwing with shit and clouds memory is altered.
People really needs to understand that this is designed to be confusing because it's the second part of a trilogy. It's crazy to think we would get all the answers of what is going on in this 2nd game. And i am so sick and tired of people blaming Nomura for every single thing. There's a lot of people working on this project who loves FF7 as much as we do. To all the people who thinks Nomura is the "Evil Mastermind trying to destroy FF7" i've just 2 things to say: 1. You clearly don't give a damn about FF7 and just want to throw hate and criticize everything without even investigating a little about FF7 Story and Legacy. 2. Nojima is the Writer and father of FF7 Story not Nomura. If you really understand FF7 you could make the difference between both of them. This project is no way close to the mess and confusing story that is Kingdom Hearts. And to be clear, FF is no stranger to timelines, worlds colliding and parallel worlds. I am an OG FF7 Fan since i was a kid and this ending is fascinating in every single way. Cloud's mind is so more damaged than ever and he's possibly doing the exact same thing he did with Zack's death. Creating a false illusion but that now Aerith is alive.
Cloud had DID "Dissasociative Identity Disorder" in the original og FF7. But you're saying that Cloud's mentsl state is even worse in this rebooted FF7 series.
@SomnusShinra Yeah, I know that. The FF7 remake ending pretty much confirms this FF7 series is a sequel to Advent Children. But it also feels a bit like a soft reboot to the FF7 compilation.
I know I'm late, but I agree whole-heatedly about the ending. It filled me with so many conflicting emotions. Cloud's behavior is incredibly concerning, but there's still that element of hope. Everything felt so deliberate too, despite the amount of ambiguity we're left with. I'm sure most of this is all still leading to generally the same place OG leaves us, but I'm still excited to see how its executed. I can already see the Nibelheim reveal and the Plant's Crisis scene being elevated by all the setup Remake and Rebirth have done so far. That's just off the top of my head though.
From what I heard, Nomura actually wanted to make the game closer to OG FF7, but Nojima's the writer. And if I recall right, Nojima's the guy who also wrote Lifestream Black and Lifestream White, which is what this whole Remake Sequel trilogy is based off of. I know the Damn you Nomura meme is fun and all, but this is pretty much mainly on Nojima's hands, and that they wanted to try to keep cohesion with all the extended lore and stuff. My main hope is that by the third game, they properly wrap it up and it makes more sense going back on the game, like how FF7's story makes more sense when you play knowing that Cloud is full Schizo. And I for one believe that Aerith is 100% dead and Cloud is just being schizo and seeing her in the lifestream, and the Aerith you gave the Holy materia to was the already dead Aerith from Lifestream White. All I know is that it better have a good payoff, because all of this setup is hopefully just intended for us to feel the massive impact of an unreliable narrator through Cloud's perspective and it's actually far simpler than it appears, because we keep seeing everything through Cloud's Schizo's viewpoint.

Saving the lake body drop funeral scene for the lifestream reveal. I like what they are cooking, just wish it didn’t take away from the scene. Confusion sucks. Sacrifice the now for a future payoff, since the Zack payoff is gone? Yeah that’s great, but damn the throne scene took an emotional hit because of it. Ah well. Little Aerith scene made up for the tears. Great game. 110 hours of bliss playing and now I get to play post game. I can understand how some people have complaints about the ending, but seeing that live chat and some people saying it ruined the game makes me question humanity, or to be more precise “gamers”/ff7 fanbase.

Idk how people don't realize part 3 is gonna open up with an hour of Aeriths death and explaining it. They're leaving us thinking and wondering rather than explaining it all. you wanna know EXACTLY where we're at going into part 3? It makes sense to keep the hype and speculation rather than ending with she's dead, roll credits. People just expected something that they aren't trying to use as a story point YET
That's not why I disliked it. It's that multiverse BS obliterates any sense of dramatic tension now we know quantum immortal copies of characters live on and can world hop now.
It's weird because on one hand the ending was kinda worse than remakes imo, but the fact that after remakes ending rebirth stuck to 90% of the OG content and improved on virtually everything with just the [10] guy ending and 30 minutes of Zack scenes makes me less worried for part 3. The changes are basically just a marketing gimmick at this point to try and get influencers to theorize about nonsense and build media attention.
They’ve literally explained why they’re doing what they’re doing. There’s not secret marketing going on. They said that making the original game word for word wouldn’t be very interesting, so they’ve added these new elements to give an element of doubt even to people who have played the original game but ultimately things will end up the same as the original. They said everything will link up with Advent Children by the end.
The ending of remake is amazing the reason you think it sucks is cause it changed the story but what they did is freaking brilliant and so is rebirth's ending it opens the story to so many posibilities if you and the "fans" are close minded thats on you.
I think the best way to think about the multiverse is multiple copies but one spirit. It’s not like oh look there’s another Cloud or another Zack. It’s Cloud and Zack. Just different experiences. I think what gets in the way of people coping with the meta stuff is ego. To imagine there’s one you and only one you. One life one fate. It’s solid and predictable. It’s grounded. Funnily enough the multiverse is probably more likely even in our reality. We just don’t see the madness.
The reason they add the button presses in scenes like this, especially when it makes no difference, is obviously to give the player that sense of having made effort physically which will engage the emotions more. At least with most people… not everyone is in tune with their feelings I guess.
I honestly just think the whole trilogy project is a way for square enix to bring back zack and aerith without actually bringing them back ya know?. They will still remain dead in the main ff7 storyline / canon, but this whole multiverse thing is just so that the fans and players can see them and hear them again without it impacting the outcome. It's just fan service and i'm guessing it'll be a happy ending sort'a thing. Aeirth and Zack will be together albeit in a different universe entirely. I mean going through all this new crazy story stuff just to have the outcome be the same is kinda pointless imo, shouldv'e just kept it a 1 to 1 remake but hey...like i said its just fan service.

I think people forget or don't know about the 3 act structure to story telling. This is only the second act. I feel like to many people are judging this ending and forgetting to realize there's still chapters left.

I believe what they’re building up to is that sequence in which they will show cloud coming to terms with aeriths death fully. I believe he’s subconsciously denying it and going crazy seeing a lifestream aerith after Sephiroth merged the two worlds (that’s why when you see cloud holding aerith you see flashes of him saying something which is inferred to be “aerith won’t laugh, cry etc” Really builds up the unreliable narrator and it’ll have huge payoff IF executed well. Combined with the Zack stuff it’ll make for a really tear felt moment imo. Only thing that sucks is that they sacrificed some emotional weight for the final game. If they fuck up that final game? Yeah it’s over, but I have complete faith
Am I the only one who thinks it is good to have those confusing scenes (ending)? I think the intention is to make us confused like cloud, because we are seeing most of the story in cloud's schizo perspective at this point the only narration you can trust is Tifa's & other party members' perspective def not Cloud's. I thought all of the confusion is a perfect set-up for Cloud's story in part 3, at least that's how I feel having played the OG & for the new ones a cliffhanger til part 3 😅
I may have not beat rebirth (lost interest in it) but holy shit the scene with Aerith and her mother made me cry... seen it once in someone elses playthrough, it made me cry then and its making me cry now... 😭
How can people still think that it's a sequel? The entire basis behind the sequel theory was that Sephiroth was meddling with the timeline to try and create a future in which he wins, and the Whispers were trying to protect the timeline because of that. Yet in Rebirth, Sephiroth still kills Aerith, which causes his downfall, and the Whispers (the normal ones) straight up save Zack and Biggs, which means they weren't trying to keep things the same as OG. The entire theory is debunked at this point.
It's a sequel in the sense that at least Sephiroth and even a version of Aerith are aware of what happened in the original, implying that this is in a way is a reboot in-universe that those in the lifestreams are aware of. It seems some events cannot be changed but regardless they seem to be leading into a completely different ff7 ending for part 3 where everyone in the planet is saved but not without some consequences I'm assuming. Making advent children events to be erased.
It's not that the theory is debunked, it's that this is explicitly the case, but it doesn't make sense because the writers are incompetent and don't realize recreating the story almost beat for beat is irreconcilable with it being a meta sequel where characters clearly have foreknowledge, but they do anyway.
It doesn't help on how many ppl are really believing on a fan theory about the games are taken place after AC and not a remake of the original with an updated story that is being told, without any proof of that claim

The only way I can explain it is that there are two timelines happening concurrently at the same time, and Cloud is the only one who is experiencing both timelines at the same time. Which is why he can still see an alternate Aerith who is still alive, while the other characters can not.
My defenses were already down by the end of the Barrett trial, and then the Aerith one came in and destroyed me. I cant believe how well that sequence was orchestrated.

Sure I understand people that are mad at the Aerith's scene and the entire sequence not being the way they wanted it to be, but I believe it's done for a reason and that we'll get the actual scene in Part 3. Because let's be honest, we've seen Cloud blocking out his speech in Rebirth, as well as glimpses of the lake scene in Remake's ending, so eventually it's all gonna come around. Right now, the focus of the ending was Cloud, how he doesn't have a Limit Break while everyone's mad to the point where they're just ready to go all out from the starting of the Jenova Fight.
The Sephiroth Reborn fight was something I'd say was perfect but it didn't belong here right now. Sephiroth isn't always meant to be the Final Boss because the players are getting too used to him and this is before the Northern Crater.

People just don't understand about the word remake, that just means its made from the ground up including its story plot, the devs can adopt a plot from 1997 but they've included a twist because they can't call it a new game for nothing.
Since this is a new game, you gotta understand it again from the ground up. Its not like you're going to know it right away because of the adopted plots from the OG. Just like in 1997, you just have to understand its plot since you don't know what's going to happen in the game.

This game is written by Nojima, who wrote the OG, and is produced by Kitase who directed the original. To say they don't know how to tell a good story is both wrong and a ridiculous statement. People loved FFXVI's story as well as this Remake/Rebirth series... Square is definitely doing things right as of late. That's not subjective, the ratings for both games show it, overwhelmingly positive across the board in both public and critic reviews. People are loving these games, yet a minority online bubble which you seem to be a part of are incapable of appreciating the brilliant storytelling this game is offering. No one criticizing this game's plot could conjure up anything remotely as impressive as Nojima and his team have done. The ending was phenomenal, they couldn't have ended this game in a better way. People wanted the original plot yet this game is very new hence its called a RE:MAKE than a RE:MASTER. Some people really wanted to connect all the story plots from the 1997 but it won't happen since this isn't a remastered game. Wonder what the third game will be called since the second is Rebirth, it could be Rebuild or Re:verse. This is just a thought, they might be going to restore the timeline at the end of part 3 hence Aerith will be permanently dead and will be at the lifestream like in Advent Children, Zack is also dead, and returning everything to what once was at least that's what I'm thinking since marlene is waiting in the original timeline. Returning to the original timeline will be now missing Aerith as a result.

A guy dies 3 times, yet survives and drops into the final battle, gets a meteor dropped on his face and escapes through a portal. A character that was saved onscreen dies anyway cos other timeline lol, and we can just grab spare copies of world saving plot devices from the world next door if ours doesn't work, great.

There’s definitely criticisms to have with the ending of Rebirth. Sure you could say “all of it will be fixed in part 3” but again till that happens people are allowed to dislike it.
Despite knowing there’s a third game, the ending of Rebirth is still extremely convoluted and fast-paced. The predominant emotion that most people will feel when the credits roll is confusion, so they are completely valid in criticising it.

@@xerpp2 Nah I don't think that the devs would use the multiverse as a fake out. In the Temple of the Ancients, the Cetra voice says that the "destroyer of worlds" will summon meteor. Sephiroth also later says that the black materia is "a key that unlocks its true counterpart hidden between worlds" It's genuine and will be further explained in Part 3.

Nomura quite literally said in the behind the scenes of Rebirth that there would be no meaning to a remake if it was one-to-one, he's the DIRECTOR of the entire trilogy, he approves the changes we see on screen, he only rejected Kitase and Nojima's ideas of bigger changes than that. But nice try spinning a other narrative without much evidence tho.

Forget that noise. How about I judge what I see, an episodic mess that rubs its waste all over the original like a pig in mud.
Personally I think this ending was good, if she just died like the original people would complain because the game has been teasing her possibly surviving, but if she survived the og purists would get angry that it didn’t happen and you don’t get that character moment, so they simply decided to go half and half, our aerith might be dead but cloud stopping that blow possibility saved 1 somewhere in those multiple worlds. And with Zack possibly making a return who’s to say she won’t. No matter what the ending was gonna be divisive just like remake.
The problem is Square Enix took a risk the moment they decided to go ahead with a remake to begin with. Once that happened, someone had to decide the answer to two basic questions: Why play a game that's nothing more than a rehash of the original? and Will we lose the FF7 OG fanbase if we decide to change the ending? But, considering all the twists and turns that have been sprinkled in, despite people being strongly of the opinion that "Aerith is dead....Period!", I'm of the opinion that there's going to be more nuance to the third chapter of the story.
Most fans are on board with the changes, but it's a bit of revisionism when people say "it would've been boring'. First, a lot of people who played this were entirely new to FF7. Second, all the clamour for a remake for years was self evidently predicated on the idea it was going to be an adaptation of the source material; that's why it was for a remake, not a sequel. How many people went into chapter 17 of Remake saying "Gee, this is boring. This needs multiverses", or got the game expecting a huge deviation from the original's core story, realistically?
Also '100% on board with the changes' and 'OG purist mad it isn't shot for shot the same' aren't the only two opinions that exist; why do peoples' feelings about stuff have to be crammed into simple, inaccurate binaries?

I know I'm kind of fed up with multiverses after the Marvel Cinematic Universe got run into the ground. But, I think they did this in a fresh enough way that it's still easy enough to follow as long as you can catch certain things.
@@renegade637 The ability to follow it isn't my issue with it. There's a bunch of problems I have, but the main one is that Remake *immediately* does the two stupidest things you can possibly do with multiverses;
A. Bring back dead characters
B. Make the story *about* it rather than it just being a framing device.
Rebirth then doubles down on this at the worst possible point in the story that it could, and establishes travel between worlds, alternate versions of characters fixing plot problems, AND establishes the alternate versions are in fact the *same* characters with their memories transferred over in some kind of quantum immortality.
A is stupid because it establishes the precedent of the multiverse having limitless potential as a magic wand to fix any plot problem and undo anything bad that happens to the characters. Cause and effect are replaced by "I wanna", zero stakes. It doesn't even matter if it isn't used in a given situation, because I know it could be and that the writers are very willing to do so.
B is stupid because in making it about the plot device, it both takes the focus off the characters and makes the author write their way into quicksand trying to explain it and keep it all straight, as the script gets bogged down in clunky exposition dumps that feel out of character. Which is exactly what happens in the last 2 chapters of both games, to Aerith and Red in Remake, and Sephiroth in Rebirth.

People need to listen to Sephiroth. He’s blatantly telling to plot flat and clear. We breach fates walls, it opens up millions of possibilities. “But they all fade” and we will only have the original flow of time. The difference is just like, he is using the alternate timelines or paths to build on the original story. They even said there’s no way this doesn’t end with leading into advent children.
Cloud saved Aerith in terrier, sephiroth merged the worlds and then fed off of the rage and emotion that was the result. Just like he was to use meteor to damage the planet and absorb the lifestreams effort to repair it. He’s using the merging of worlds now too for the same purpose. There’s a reason they keep showing us sephiroth absorbing meteor. People seem to be focusing on the differences of the games rather than seeing sephiroth plain and clear plan. This is all building and building on one single thing. Clouds absolute mental breakdown. It has been doing that sine the very beginning of remake. Almost every line sephiroth said to him in the game was said to cloud by someone else in this game
He literally is and idk why so many people are ignoring it. He laid it out so clearly. The worlds are doomed to fade. It may be a “multiverse” but it’ll all flow back to the original timeline regardless. IMO this will make the lifestream sequence hit harder, because if it is confirmed by the next game that the Aerith we see is from a different timeline, then that Aerith will go back into the lifestream right? Then cloud will have to accept and come to terms with her death. THAT is when they’ll show the scene in full with cloud putting her in the water etc.

Will be easier to judge after finishing my hard mode playthrough, and likely more after that but first impressions like 2 weeks after it I like the ending
But I am also glad it isn't just a shot for shot remake of the OG for the most part, as much as I love the OG
And hell, i'm sure once all 3 parts are out someone will make a mod that cuts out all the non-OG stuff from the trilogy
I really think Cloud is hallucinating. He think that he saved Aerith, but she is actually dead. Cloud is going insane just like the original .
My thoughts aswell I think he's just like flat out in denial of the situation and part 3 will start with them trynna get through to him and him eventually breaking down when it catches up to him but that's just my take
No he isn't hallucinating. He IS going insane, yes, but he is going insane because he actually saved Aerith in ANOTHER timeline and through Sephiroth and Aerith he is now able to also see things/people from other timelines or the rift in the sky. So while he is under the impression that he saved her, he actually just created diverting timelines, one where he saved her and one where she actually dies, his timeline, just like the OG. What is fucking him up is that he is seeing the Aerith from the timeline in which he saved her, however that is not the timeline he is living in. In his timeline, Aerith still died. So he is not hallucinating because the Aerith he sees and talks to, just like the rift in the sky, are real however they don't exist in his timeline and that's what's so fucked up about this. He needs to come to terms that in HIS timeline, HIS Aerith is dead. He is not just leaving her behind temporarily, she is gone. He will go absolutely insane

When Cloud held Aerith in his arms, for a brief moment, Tifa could also see two timelines. One where Aerith was saved (no blood), and a timeline where Aerith died (blood).
Initially i thought that too but then it wouldn't make sense esp when Cloud literally knows about other world's existence.
So my take is he did manage to save Aerith but just not in his world. That our Cloud is jumping ot confusing between his world and other worlds.
guess i'll just leave this here, but a bit of a theory i have about the end with the two results we see of cloud succeeding and failing to save her, I don't think these are separate time lines happening. I think what is happening is aerith is manipulating cloud's perspective of how things happened akin to what sephiroth does. Why would she do this, i think possibly its to postpone clouds loss of self and grief over her death. Tis a theory though and i may be way off base but given the way they use flickering the same way it happens when sephiroth is screwing with shit and clouds memory is altered.

People really needs to understand that this is designed to be confusing because it's the second part of a trilogy. It's crazy to think we would get all the answers of what is going on in this 2nd game. And i am so sick and tired of people blaming Nomura for every single thing. There's a lot of people working on this project who loves FF7 as much as we do. To all the people who thinks Nomura is the "Evil Mastermind trying to destroy FF7" i've just 2 things to say: 1. You clearly don't give a damn about FF7 and just want to throw hate and criticize everything without even investigating a little about FF7 Story and Legacy. 2. Nojima is the Writer and father of FF7 Story not Nomura. If you really understand FF7 you could make the difference between both of them. This project is no way close to the mess and confusing story that is Kingdom Hearts. And to be clear, FF is no stranger to timelines, worlds colliding and parallel worlds. I am an OG FF7 Fan since i was a kid and this ending is fascinating in every single way. Cloud's mind is so more damaged than ever and he's possibly doing the exact same thing he did with Zack's death. Creating a false illusion but that now Aerith is alive.
Cloud had DID "Dissasociative Identity Disorder" in the original og FF7. But you're saying that Cloud's mentsl state is even worse in this rebooted FF7 series.

But it also feels a bit like a soft reboot to the FF7 compilation.
I know I'm late, but I agree whole-heatedly about the ending. It filled me with so many conflicting emotions. Cloud's behavior is incredibly concerning, but there's still that element of hope. Everything felt so deliberate too, despite the amount of ambiguity we're left with. I'm sure most of this is all still leading to generally the same place OG leaves us, but I'm still excited to see how its executed.
I can already see the Nibelheim reveal and the Plant's Crisis scene being elevated by all the setup Remake and Rebirth have done so far. That's just off the top of my head though.
From what I heard, Nomura actually wanted to make the game closer to OG FF7, but Nojima's the writer. And if I recall right, Nojima's the guy who also wrote Lifestream Black and Lifestream White, which is what this whole Remake Sequel trilogy is based off of. I know the Damn you Nomura meme is fun and all, but this is pretty much mainly on Nojima's hands, and that they wanted to try to keep cohesion with all the extended lore and stuff.
My main hope is that by the third game, they properly wrap it up and it makes more sense going back on the game, like how FF7's story makes more sense when you play knowing that Cloud is full Schizo. And I for one believe that Aerith is 100% dead and Cloud is just being schizo and seeing her in the lifestream, and the Aerith you gave the Holy materia to was the already dead Aerith from Lifestream White. All I know is that it better have a good payoff, because all of this setup is hopefully just intended for us to feel the massive impact of an unreliable narrator through Cloud's perspective and it's actually far simpler than it appears, because we keep seeing everything through Cloud's Schizo's viewpoint.

It IS roughly 7 seconds from the time the camera pans up to Sephiroth falling until cloud snaps out of his control and shouts "NO"

Saving the lake body drop funeral scene for the lifestream reveal. I like what they are cooking, just wish it didn’t take away from the scene. Confusion sucks. Sacrifice the now for a future payoff, since the Zack payoff is gone? Yeah that’s great, but damn the throne scene took an emotional hit because of it. Ah well. Little Aerith scene made up for the tears.

I can understand how some people have complaints about the ending, but seeing that live chat and some people saying it ruined the game makes me question humanity, or to be more precise “gamers”/ff7 fanbase.
If you dare to comment ANYWHERE about thinking rebirth's ending was actually kinda neat or that the concept of defying fate is actually a neat premise for such a storied game, all I can say to you is this: Embrace your dreams and protect your honor...as a Soldier!

I believe when they say defying fate I don’t think it’ll be a thing of Aerith and Zack living till the end. The devs did say this will link to advent children which means they have to stay dead.

It makes sense to keep the hype and speculation rather than ending with she's dead, roll credits. People just expected something that they aren't trying to use as a story point YET

It's weird because on one hand the ending was kinda worse than remakes imo, but the fact that after remakes ending rebirth stuck to 90% of the OG content and improved on virtually everything with just the [10] guy ending and 30 minutes of Zack scenes makes me less worried for part 3. The changes are basically just a marketing gimmick at this point to try and get influencers to theorize about nonsense and build media attention.
They’ve literally explained why they’re doing what they’re doing. There’s not secret marketing going on.
They said that making the original game word for word wouldn’t be very interesting, so they’ve added these new elements to give an element of doubt even to people who have played the original game but ultimately things will end up the same as the original.
They said everything will link up with Advent Children by the end.
The ending of remake is amazing the reason you think it sucks is cause it changed the story but what they did is freaking brilliant and so is rebirth's ending it opens the story to so many posibilities if you and the "fans" are close minded thats on you.
I think the best way to think about the multiverse is multiple copies but one spirit. It’s not like oh look there’s another Cloud or another Zack. It’s Cloud and Zack. Just different experiences. I think what gets in the way of people coping with the meta stuff is ego. To imagine there’s one you and only one you. One life one fate. It’s solid and predictable. It’s grounded. Funnily enough the multiverse is probably more likely even in our reality. We just don’t see the madness.
The reason they add the button presses in scenes like this, especially when it makes no difference, is obviously to give the player that sense of having made effort physically which will engage the emotions more. At least with most people… not everyone is in tune with their feelings I guess.
I honestly just think the whole trilogy project is a way for square enix to bring back zack and aerith without actually bringing them back ya know?. They will still remain dead in the main ff7 storyline / canon, but this whole multiverse thing is just so that the fans and players can see them and hear them again without it impacting the outcome. It's just fan service and i'm guessing it'll be a happy ending sort'a thing. Aeirth and Zack will be together albeit in a different universe entirely. I mean going through all this new crazy story stuff just to have the outcome be the same is kinda pointless imo, shouldv'e just kept it a 1 to 1 remake but hey...like i said its just fan service.

I think people forget or don't know about the 3 act structure to story telling. This is only the second act. I feel like to many people are judging this ending and forgetting to realize there's still chapters left.

@@torchlight1785a lot of the parts of the OG were confusing prior to the lifestream sequence. I believe what they’re building up to is that sequence in which they will show cloud coming to terms with aeriths death fully.
I believe he’s subconsciously denying it and going crazy seeing a lifestream aerith after Sephiroth merged the two worlds (that’s why when you see cloud holding aerith you see flashes of him saying something which is inferred to be “aerith won’t laugh, cry etc”
Really builds up the unreliable narrator and it’ll have huge payoff IF executed well. Combined with the Zack stuff it’ll make for a really tear felt moment imo.

I think the intention is to make us confused like cloud, because we are seeing most of the story in cloud's schizo perspective at this point the only narration you can trust is Tifa's & other party members' perspective def not Cloud's. I thought all of the confusion is a perfect set-up for Cloud's story in part 3, at least that's how I feel having played the OG & for the new ones a cliffhanger til part 3 😅

How can people still think that it's a sequel? The entire basis behind the sequel theory was that Sephiroth was meddling with the timeline to try and create a future in which he wins, and the Whispers were trying to protect the timeline because of that. Yet in Rebirth, Sephiroth still kills Aerith, which causes his downfall, and the Whispers (the normal ones) straight up save Zack and Biggs, which means they weren't trying to keep things the same as OG. The entire theory is debunked at this point.
It's a sequel in the sense that at least Sephiroth and even a version of Aerith are aware of what happened in the original, implying that this is in a way is a reboot in-universe that those in the lifestreams are aware of. It seems some events cannot be changed but regardless they seem to be leading into a completely different ff7 ending for part 3 where everyone in the planet is saved but not without some consequences I'm assuming. Making advent children events to be erased.
It's not that the theory is debunked, it's that this is explicitly the case, but it doesn't make sense because the writers are incompetent and don't realize recreating the story almost beat for beat is irreconcilable with it being a meta sequel where characters clearly have foreknowledge, but they do anyway.
