This gives me an idea: A Pokémon game where you're a middle aged person who has a midlife crisis and decides to start their Pokémon Journey in their late 30's

I can see it now, turning 40 this year. Put his dreams away to work a job with decent pay, only to be miserable and tired of it all.
My biggest complaint so far is the constant cutscenes. I’m just sitting there like “hurry up I wanna go catch the Pokémon!”

One of my problems with gaming journalists are that most the time u don't know how long they played cause I've played a lot of games that were really fun at first n a few hours in it became repetitive (not the fun kind), has no sense of progression, etc. This is why I prefer to wait at least a week after a games release n people put some time into it to get a better idea on if the game is gonna be worth it to me
Curious to see where you land on this one. I feel like you will speak the truth. I know everyone wants open world, new mechanics, etc. and the graphics while not mind-blowing might have an art-style that work collectively to make a good experience. That said, the development time for these games and the past execution of titles makes me very skeptical. A console exclusive from a brand the size of Pokemon needs to achieve a certain level of quality -- especially this far into the life of the Switch. Absolutely looking forward to your first impressions as soo as you feel comfortable sharing them.
Not really, the artsyle is one of the most dull and uninteresting I've ever seen in a video game. All the environments feel like they were ripped straight from a Gamecube or PS2 game.

I honestly don’t really think Nuzlocking works in this title (at least reasonably with the same rules in place, unless you want to lose your mind). I can see different forms of a challenge run that can work well with this game, but the exp share and less linear structure won’t help what nuzlockes have been. I’m fine with this, I’m up for a casual time in PLA, and I can see new ideas to make it more exciting
@@aquano1972 it does work actually, you just have to choose which way you wanna count encounters. There are X amount of big maps (dont wanna spoil) and in every map there are locations with names who have different spawns. These locations just replace routes. The only thing you need is find a way to decide the encounters. Closing you eyes and catching the 1st one you hear? Catching the 1st one you see in every location? Or just simply choose your encounters for variety and to simplify it. But a nuzlocke is definitely possible and the challenge is present. People gonna struggle hardcore nuzlocking this game (level caps+no items).
What Gamefreak is doing with Sinnoh and Hisui, they need to do with every other region. This could be a completely new mainline series. Imagine seeing what every Pokémon region looked like in the past.

A couple reviews i watched mentioned monster hunter vibes and i was more excited for that instead of breath of the wild comparisons. Was a big fan of the two monster hunter stories games. They were pokemon games that rivals the actual pokemon games

I really enjoyed the way monster hunter does their missions and how their maps work. So I am really excited for this Pokémon game. When I first saw the trailer, I was getting some monster hunter vibes but now people are saying it. I can not wait for this game.

Sounds to me like this is a very solid attempt at making a, fresh, new and "open world" take on the traditional formula. It is their first attempt though, so it's natural that there will be a couple of foibles and missteps, but other than that, it sounds great to me. I'm glad we're finally doing something different that isn't just a small scale spin off like the ranger and mystery dungeon games

I want a remake or sequel of the Pokémon Conquest game. It made me have to actually strategize to win battles within time limits.

Sounds like a great time if you were already into Pokemon as long as you're open to something different. But for someone like me who never really got into Pokemon, maybe Arceus would be cool but not necessarily a must-buy compared to other games like Monster Hunter, SMT, Xenoblade, or BOTW.

Getting into Pokemon Shield a year or two later made me realize that with large franchises like these, nitpicking from all corners of the fandom is inevitable. As for Arceus, I don't care about the size of the map. I only care if the environments create immersion with the game's assets and overall theme of the title. Simply having a map as large as Los Santos isn't a guarantee for a great time...
Honestly I agree. If the map was huge but with nothing to do, it would be pointless.
Yeah, most open world games get their environments wrong. Assassin Creed games look stunning for the first few hours, but then the magic trick is broken and you see copy/paste everywhere and a ton of pointless terrain to traverse.
It's really hard to make a good open world, so I'd rather the developer be honest with themselves and hand-craft some condensed maps that are fun to explore.

@@Katie-hb8iq I think a good example of a great open-world game franchise imo is Yakuza. Sega managed to effectively reuse assets for multiple titles cleverly by focusing on what is stuffed into the map and how it interacts with story, characters, time period (huge factory to the narrative) and the player's curiosity. Mind you the map isn't big to begin with.

I've always wanted a Pokemon game that actually feels like an RPG. And actually gives you more than 20 hours of gameplay, this seems to do both of those things so that's that 🤷🏼♂️

My take away is that not all game reviewers are the same. Some people grew up with pokemon and appreciate how far it's come. Others play COD all day and were forced to write a review on a game series they don't even like 🤷 still looking forward to it

They’re all just opinions. I never go by reviews unless a lot are super negative or positive, but most have been on the higher end for this game.
I loved death stranding personally and it is nightmare for some people too each his own. I love how Pokémon can attack you
Some people grew up with Pokemon and are upset with how the series has been devolving. Then there's people like you who keep making the problem worse because you can't help but mindlessly simp for a company while trying to deflect criticism.

I don't really care what the scores say as long as it's fun and worth my time. I keep reading comments of normal people saying they're enjoying it and "can't put it down". I haven't played a "new" pokemon game since silver of gbc, so I'm very disconnected from the series but this formula might be what I've been waiting on to jump back into the series.
I figure I'll give it a try and hopefully they'll build onto this formula with multiplayer features and new things to see and do. As a kid I always dreamed of an open world pokemon MMO. This isn't quite that, but it's a step towards it.
Wow that's a great point. there have been many fan made projects for pokemon mmos both 2d and 3d, but this seems like a format where it could actually work! A game that feels like you're living in the world just like the characters in the anime is probably what a lot of people have been dreaming of since they were kids.
@@caseydia3957 sadly I think Nintendo/gamefreak are sitting on a pokemon MMO until they have no other choice but to do it. By that I mean they won't do it until they're at risk of going bankrupt, which would take a lot of mistakes.
Another thing that is keeping an official pokemon MMO from happening is Nintendo's stance on online communications. Nintendo has been really restrictive in allowing communication in their games because they don't want children to be able to interact with adults. I'm sure there's a better way to handle that but Nintendo likes to play it safe.
Nintendo definitely knows that an official pokemon MMO is demand. I've played many fan made pokemon MMOs that Nintendo shut down. That being said, the only way I see a pokemon MMO being made is if Nintendo is desperate for money (imagine all the microtransactions they could put in the game)

Im just excited to wander the wilderness like they showed in the anime when they would be walking between towns.
It is disappointing that there arent little towns throught the land for us to discover. However, it looks like there is plenty of room for DLC which could be cool.
That type of stuff shouldn't be filled in by dlc, should've been there at launch
@@codysvlogdays I 100% agree with you. I honestly dont like the concept of dlc for that very reason. The only justified one for me is witcher 3 blood and wine. However, that isnt going to stop these companies from going that route anyways. Luckily there is more than one way to experience the content when it comes to these matters 😉

Tbh, considering the reviews for games SwSh and the entirety of PMD, you should NEVER pay attention to IGN for reviews.
I would agree with u normally but they were pretty spot on for this one. This is the issue when people always expect good things from GAMEFREAK.
They can make a half baked game and people will praise them no matter what so there's not a big push for creativity or innovation like they used to. It's all profit these days.
I'll be waiting for sometime before I decide whether to pick this up or not.

As a fan of the original Red and Blue and having played every other mainline entry in the franchise, I'm very much looking forward to picking this up. This is a bold new direction for Gamefreak and we should supporting their way of tying something new.

I think some shots I’ve seen look good, but some (like when you can see very far, or when your flying), don’t look that good. I hope the soundtrack is nice, though. Good music can really elevate a game in my opinion.
From what I heard the first three hours is a tutorial and a bunch of dialogue and the open world looks boring I would recommend people stop buying Pokémon games into game freak put actual effort in making a good game.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus is very different from the other past Pokemon games because sometime a trainer need to dodge a wild Pokemon's attack instead the usual Pokemon battle to weaken a wild Pokemon before catching it. Watch some of the video on TH-cam of how to dodge even the legendary Pokemon like Palkia, Dialga, Giratina and Arceus is really hard as it reminds me one of Nintendo sitch games like Zelda and Mario.
Definitely the highest rated pokemon game in a long time. Pokemon Sun got an 87, but Moon was at an 84. Have to go back to X and Y to see 87 and 88 metacritic scores, which was 9 years ago. Nintendo Life has been pretty hard on Pokemon games - very honest and tired of them - and they actually gave this one a 9/10.
Visual quality seems fine - it's using the Breath of the Wild engine I think, and that's probably the best the Switch is going to be able to do without a hardware upgrade.
Its definitely not the Botw engine. It looks significantly worse than that game, which came out 5 years ago.
GameFreak has their own engine that they use. Ring Fit Adventure has been the only other game that has used the BOTW engine.
@@TheAlibabatree just because it looks worse doesn’t mean it’s not using the same engine. Which I think is the case because Monolith if I’m not mistaken helped make the the layout of both games.

I personally think this game should be held to the same standard as something like dragonquest 11. from what I have seen so far, it looks like it falls short. You say its a big departure from the franchise, but this is a game made by one of the most expensive gaming companies in the world, we deserve more...

Tbh I think people are only giving good reviews because this is just good for a pokémon game, sword and shield set the bar so low that everything else looks good
I think you need to remember that Nintendo is not the one developing these games. It is Game Freak. Game Freak are not an AAA company despite the popularity of Pokemon. They only have 150~ employees. They have developed handheld games for years on low power. They are not accustomed to HD gaming at all. It will take a long transition for them and given they don't have many employees the process will be slower than usual. They should hire 3D artists but maybe they don't feel the need to when people will buy games at 3DS quality regardless.

I've been playing this game and am absolutely hooked. It's an absolute new take for the franchise. I find myself very excited about catching even non rare Pokémon. It's a constant interactive experience when you're in a battle or catching a Pokémon or getting chased down by a pissed off alpha level Pokémon.

Lmao what the last review said was spot on, the game is an improvement compared to OTHER pokemon games but compared to BoTW and MH, which people have been doing, it's just eh and not worth the 60$. If it wasn't 60$ then the comparison wouldn't be as warranted but the game is 60$ and the other open world games for the same price(some even lower now like BoTW) make this game look so bland. That doesn't mean there's no fun to be had in this but it's definitely not anything crazy outside of pokemon

Did the story drag on? Did it change gears? Is it an obvious story with an expected ending once you start to play?

You can compare it to open world games but at the same time, those have been practicing and perfecting the open world concept. Zelda has experimented the formula a lot and changed it up plenty of times. I don't think they've really had much problem going into another genre like Hyrule Warriors but that's because they had help from whoever made Dynasty Warriors. And Minish Cap and others were helped by Capcom. This is just Gamefreak making a pivot on their own and not really getting help from the outside.
So yeah, for a Pokémon game it's good. You're right, I'd be a little hard pressed for $60, maybe if it goes on sale. But I'd still choose it over the "Let's Go" which realistically wasn't aim towards me, and Pokémon snap (which I am curious about but I don't know if I'd be hooked on it enough to justify the price tag. Which is why I wish game rental store still existed.)
I think if they did take a dramatic turn, it would alienate old players which sounds like their target audience because I think they can throw hands with pokemon if I'm not mistaken. As far as story and graphics, I honestly don't expect much. I just wanna battle for the most part. I have low expectations with it being a Switch game. And story lines...they don't exactly go too deep. If they do, it's well hidden lore that I'll find later on the internet but not usually part of the base story.

Alien Isolation is one of the standout games from last gen for me. Suffice to say I haven’t taken mainstream game reviews that seriously since.
I know it’s crazy. That game is amazing, a masterpiece of the genre IMO. That guy was just salty the alien killed him 5000 times.
Godhand review vs Imagine Party Babies review still gives me nightmares to this day.

This game won't be for everyone just because of the big drastic changes. For me I am not super excited to rush out and play it but I'll get around to it at some point.
Believe it or not the framerate is better in the actual game then compared to the trailers.

I got a copy a few days ago. I've done nothing but play it, eat, sleep, and the occasional pay attention to my job. I've put 23 hours into it in 3 days. It's pretty fantastic but does have room to grow. It is very much the zone thing but it hasn't been a real hinderance to the pieces of classic gameplay that are still there.
Me too. I've been hooked on this game. I think it's incredible. The haters have no idea. But yea man, I've been absolutely into this one.
I find it interesting that the best rated pokemon game ever has a rating of 88/100.
And the ALL of 3D Zelda games since the first way back in 1998 are 90/100+ with only like a few remakes below 90.
Yet Pokemon by far makes the most money and sells the best out of any franchise.
And then games like BOTW, OoT, Twilight princess, Majoras mask, and wind waker being some of the highest rated video games of all time.
While Pokemon rarely ever breaks the 80 barrier, with the majority in the 70s and even some in the 60s.

It’s just mass appeal, it’s pretty common that the best games ever don’t outsell pure mass appeal
Quality has very little to do with success/profit often, while they can be related at times there's countless amazing gems that only have a small following and there's tons of lazy terrible slop that rakes in millions.
Compare wonderful gems like Skeleton Boomerang, Dust: An Elysian Tale, Moon, Godhand, and such that are amazing titles that get minimal recognization by most to souless trash like CoD, Assassin's Creed, CP2077, 2K/EA-Sports and etc that have little to no integrity yet make countless loads of cash constantly.

I think inwould like this game but not love it.
I feel pokemon should try to just have a more lively world. Going into a town and see machop's building a roof or something. With loads of sidequests making you feel like your in a episode of the show

I pre-ordered the game because it was different, and definitely a fresh take I'm willing to explore, the graphics are definitely not the best it could be and is something that previous games struggle with in optimization, but I'm excited to get my copy since I haven't played any Pokemon games since the DS era.
Just like other Pokémon games, the sales will speak for themselves. There’s already a huge demand from the huge Pokémon following. To the point that pre orders are being delayed a week or more. I feel like most any avid Pokémon will be intrigued (like I am) to pick this up, while also interesting a lot of first timers. Also another point that I haven’t heard mentioned much is that you don’t HAVE to trade with people to complete the Pokédex like in most other Pokémon games. I feel that alone will pull some people in or at very least interest then more so.

I don’t necessarily agree with your interpretation of the IGN review. I think the summary was meant to convey that the critic feels the game has ignored advancements made by other games in its genre - such as the latest Monster Hunter - and that it’s design feels archaic because of that. I feel that isn’t necessarily the same thing as not advancing the genre / brand it’s working with. It’s similar to saying something like “This feels like a game from the last console generation” In my opinion. Love the video regardless!
I think it was the first review. The guy honestly seemed like a pokemon fan and even though he gave it like a perfect review, it made me excited as I'm not a graphics hog. The game doesn't have to look a million bucks just as long as the game loop is good.

Definitely excited. Glad I pre-ordered it. It's said to arrive on the release date so I'll be filling all my free time with it.
Took Friday and Saturday off so I could have a long weekend with this game hoping it’s as good as reviewers are saying.
I noticed the flute in this game uses one of the same sounds thats in botw (or pretty close to it)
Ive had it a week, it isn't the open world game we wanted. But it's another great step in the right direction. You live in a hub village. Leave and choose which area to investigate and are teleported there. You can't leave the village and run from the first wild area to the last one.

As someone who’s constantly playing the original Spyro trilogy etc I’m totally fine and happy with the graphics. Great frame rate has me stoked.

My biggest concern has been the emptiness and rendering distance of Pokémon and npc’s. I haven’t watched much other than the trailers and the npc’s load in like feet away, kinda looks bad. Hoping the mechanics carry the game.
I have read that the fields don't actually feel as empty as the trailers paint them out to be, but don't take my word for it since I'm also in the process of looking at reviews to see if it's worth buying.
The render distance, though, I have read from multiple people that it bothers them so there's no discussion about that

I played the game a week ago and its the best pokemon game i played for a while now,i played pokemon games since gen 1 and for a while pokemon were my favorite games, i love all the aspect of arceus, the freedome, watching the pokemons fight in real time and especial the japanese inspired world, i dont like the more western inspired world and you realy feel like you are in the pokemon anime wolrd.
I hope the next games go this direction because there is no need to comeback the old style pokmeon after this its very a very refreshing pokemon experience.

Never played monster hunter but I always see people say "when pokemon players grow up, they play monster hunter" now this makes sense

The last bad review were saying they didn't like the game too much because it centered around completing the pokedex but since the first trailer they said it was going to center around the pokedex so idk how they are surprised about that.
