      It could also help if he modified the "Hugo there" for cars coming off the straight VOP and onto the curved one. Adding the option for the cars to not only stay in their lane but also to move one lane to the side.

  • @shraddha278
    @shraddha278 2 ปีที่แล้ว +114

    At 24:44 the two bridge peices don’t have a nod in between for the cars to change lanes. The cars that come down the bridge from either side are forced to go straight back to another bridge even if they want to turn and not take the bridge.

    • @linnoff
      @linnoff 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      This, and/or giving one of the ground level lanes an option to go both ways. As it is, there's no reason for the overpass lanes to go to ground level since they go back up without any lane switching allowed

    • @portnoyslp
      @portnoyslp 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Although the cars seem to be finding a way -- at 27:16 you can see some of the cars jumping lanes at the "nodeless" connection to avoid having to go to the next bridge.

  • @tigonologdring9189
    @tigonologdring9189 2 ปีที่แล้ว +91

    Most of the traffic issues seem to have been down to "dedicated turning lanes" where you forced two lanes of through traffic into one heavily choked lane and one empty turning lane, a bit like you had at the end before you reverted the one-way back to a two-way overpass. Great looking stuff though! Reminds me of the Mancunian Way quite a bit. The underpass version would be like bits of Paris I think.

    • @cherriberri8373

    Hi Biffa! I think you made an oopsie around 24:48
    As you can see, there isn't a node between the two overpasses where cars can change lanes, so they are forced to go up the second overpass whether they like it or not.
    No idea if it was intentional :P

    • @MrDexSat
      @MrDexSat 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Was just about to comment this. As it was, the second overpass seemed unnecessary and building it that way meant people using the first one are forced to use the second one. Bit of an oopsie, but hopefully an easy fix (though I'd personally just remove the second overpass altogether)

    • @Foulwynd
      @Foulwynd 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      if you look at 27:53, the cars are changing lanes there even though Biffa set it up weirdly, so it probably works as it should despite Biffa's intentions

      @@MrDexSat also here to comment on that :D I would have a single overpass over the two intersections. Overpasses are only 2 lanes while the roads are 4 lanes, it seems to me that most of the people will use the road for turning into the city.

    • @DanRamone81
      @DanRamone81 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

  • @V8HiluxZX6R
    @V8HiluxZX6R 2 ปีที่แล้ว +30

    9:15 when you added in the timed traffic lights it changed your lanes to allow a straight on again... (forgive me if you addressed this later in the video - you did notice it but not sure you knew why it happened). You caught it when it happened on your second overpass/flyover.
    Edit: it became irrelevant in the end because of the extension over the roundabout, you now need the straight on lanes for people coming off the roundabout from the other directions.

  • @raymaa1223
    @raymaa1223 2 ปีที่แล้ว +19

    It may be because I am European, but I’d prefer to have underpasses rather than overpasses (especially at the roundabout in order to preserve its beauty)
    Apart from that, I love the way you solve all these traffic issues in various ways, it’s very inspiring (although I can’t apply 90% of these solutions as I play on console and don’t have access to mods…)

  • @stephenclark9917
    @stephenclark9917 2 ปีที่แล้ว +51

    Alternatively you could make better use of the existing lanes. Let straight on traffic share a lane with right turning traffic - abandon dedicated turning lanes. At 2:20 is a classical example, the right turning lane empty, massive queue in straight on lane. Two downstream lanes ready to receive traffic, but only one lane supplying it. Lane mathematics applies to junctions too.

    • @kaltaron1284
      @kaltaron1284 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The standard AI had problems with mixed use lanes which made people use only single use ones AFAIK. This shouldn't be as much of an issue because he's using TM:PE but he's lowered the AI settings for performance so maybe it might still be an issue?

    • @artistfkaW
      @artistfkaW 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kaltaron1284 yeah I was gonna say that’s one casualty of trying to make the game run smoother. Applying lane math to intersections works if there aren’t nodes they can switch in before the next turn off but otherwise the basic game mechanics will send basically everyone on the same route

    • @wohlhabendermanager
      @wohlhabendermanager 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah, that would be the logical thing to do, but sadly the game AI isn't that clever. It will happily pile up in one lane even though there are three available. Even TM:PE can't solve all the AI's problems, even though I've noticed an increased usage of other lanes with that mod.

  • @eeffiieejj

    27:45 You're forcing everyone turning right to stay in the right hand lane, which then forces them to turn right at the next intersection, go around the block, then choose the lane to come back in order to take a left. This will make a bigger mess. Those overpasses aren't meant to be used back-to-back like that.

  • @paulleah5887

      The cars can leave the lane, but do so only right at the start of the 2nd overpass. I consider this an inappropriate spot however, a node in between to allow for switching would be best I guess.

  • @poelmeister

    You can use VOP to make double roundabouts, so two levels, one that turns normal at street level and one that turns opposite on the elevated level. You essentially cut your traffic in half and reduce time spent in the roundabout. And it will much better handle excess influx.

  • @TheRealSurajShrestha

      They're good in situations where you've got a major intersection dominated by through traffic on one road, but with enough traffic turning and crossing to make traffic lights both essential for the side road and disruptive for the main road.

  • @HilcoKlinkert
    @HilcoKlinkert 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    A "Vanilla Under Pass" would probably work wonders at the roundabout, allowing heavy industrial traffic to head straight on to the highway.
    I'm surprised you didn't go for that, as you mentioned the possibility of tunneling with VOP, and I was curious to see it built. I'll just have to try it myself then 😀

    8 meters is pretty high for a bridge piece really - 26ft! even 5 meters would be a more than acceptable height for an overpass bridge (over 16ft, more than enough for road traffic). Love it though, thanks for the ep!

    • @A._Meroy
      @A._Meroy 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The road pieces are quite thick from top to bottom, probably roughly 3 meters. Raising them only 5 meters (which counts from top to top) would result in only 2m being left from the top of the lower section to the bottom of the overpass. Trucks would clip through the bottom of the overpass for sure.
      Edit: Just rewatched the relevant part. Bridged road pieces are apparently only 2m thick. So elevating 5m would be like 3m space + 2m road above it. Sufficient for normal cars, but large trucks still wouldn't fit.

  • @xtnuser5338
    @xtnuser5338 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    If you put a couple of the overpasses pretty close to each other - like only one road segment apart between overpass ends - I think you should add a node to that in-between segment halfway along it. That way the cars can come off one overpass and have a chance to change lanes before they hit the next overpass.

  • @Sparkiebc

    A lot of people already mentioned that all the HugoTheres force traffic in some direction. But it's not because of HugoThere, it's just VOP quirk: it is more space-consuming then it seems.
    I've built a lot of intersections with VOP and found that you just shouldn't use two VOPs on close junctions at all, you have to give it some room to breathe.
    What is cool with VOP however is busy 4-way junctions. You make one overpass, one underpass and ground level is dedicated to only turns with two-phase light. It just decimates any traffic!

    • @A._Meroy
      @A._Meroy 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Combining overpass and underpass for the crossing through lanes almost turns it into a full blown stack interchange. The lights are essentially only needed for left turning. No doubt that will decimate traffic like nothing else.

    The VOP already has tunnels. Just use tunneling like anywhere else when you create those overpasses, just go down. Also, on main junctions, it is about lane management. A. cool way to use the OP tool--if you let it go underground, you create a three way overpass/bridge setup, where you have an intersection, an underpass straight through bypass, and an overground overpass that turns into a bridge. Basically like a urban limited space stack interchange for a river bridge. And of course, the purpose is to have a double bypass so that the bridge can essentially function as an expressway. This is especially useful when you have really close connections.
    We can imagine, for example, the bridge connects to downtown proper, but we use the overpass to connect the bridge into the main junctions, while the rest of the road carries on into another 4 way junction. This allows traffics to be very easily dispersed and a main street maintained without becoming a stroad.

  • @richardlanglois172

    Hi Biffa. Great vid as always. Others have mentioned it, but:
    You'll need a decision node between the overpass by the police station (#3 that you installed today) and the turning overpass (#2). There's no decision node in the 6-lane road between them, so, once a driver has entered either overpass, they're forced onto the other one too.
    Some have noted that drivers are (weirdly) still changing lanes, that's because the Hugo There at the east end of ramp #3 is missing its middle assignment.
    I use VOP a lot in my city, and I've found that I can get away with not using Hugo There for the outermost nodes of the VOP (6-lane-with-chevrons to vanilla-6-lane), though it can still look a little wonky sometimes, cause you'll wind up with what looks like "OMG MY EXIT!!" behaviour from the sims, lol.

    I think you are giving way too much into designated turning lanes. At 2:39 for example the traffic is building up not despite designated turning lanes but because of it. Most traffic wants to go straight ahead and are stuck in one land while the other line with right turns is hardly used. Having the right lane allow right turns and straight one would greatly increase the capacity of that junction. Same is true for lots of other junctions. Designated lanes make sense if you have an (more or less) equal amount going in different directions.

    Biffa, the problem with the roundabout buildup is due to not being allowed into a blocked junction. Technically in the game once a couple of cars are out of the junction, those cars would fill up the first section of the roundabout. This means that no more cars will enter the roundabout until those cars move onto the next section. I hope this makes sense.

    About the "missing node" the bypass is over a secondary road, so I dont think its a big problem cuz they can detour to the juction before, while making a bypass for the main road, without causing traffic problems if a roundabout is added at the beginning of the first bypass

  • @lamb-mz2sd

    I wish the devs will consider adding mid road overpass/underpass in the game. Even just fixed road assets will be totally fine.

  • @Jaylen510
    @Jaylen510 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    At 24:44 You are forcing all the cars that went onto the overpass to continue onto the other overpass because they cannot switch lanes! You should add a node there so the traffic from the overpass on the right isn’t forced to take the overpass on the left! That way people can turn right at the junction!

    If you want to see these in real life, check out Memorial Drive on the Cambridge side of the Charles River and Storrow Drive on the Boston side of the same river in Massachusetts.
    The Memorial Drive side (north) of the Charles River, has ramps coming in from the side streets and then connecting to the parkway. In these locations, through traffic remains straight in underpasses and tunnels. Where the bridges cross over to the Boston side, there are ramps leading up and down to the drive.
    On the Storrow Drive side (south) of the Charles, there is a similar setup but with more tunnels and over passes. This is usually where trucks get stuck because they don't read the signs about height limits! This usually occurs at rush hour too when it's pouring ran to make matters worse. Anyway, all of this ends with sweeping on and off ramps, tunnels and overpasses as this parkway enters into Leverett Circle, which is a gigantic overworked and ruined roundabout that the traffic geniuses "fixed" a few years ago.

    This mod feels a bit convoluted. Kinda feels like you could have done this without the mod, even if it would take up a bit more space. As well, it seems it's meant to always be a straight overpass, rather than turning at all.

    As you've set it up to not allow those on the first overpass to do anything other than take the second overpass, could you not just have built one continuous overpass? That way people trying to get from one end to the other can just carry straight on through! You could even take it further down the road.

  • @pitabread79
    @pitabread79 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    They way this city (and Blightea-on-the-Wold) have developed is as follows:
    Traffic -> Mess around with lane arrows -> Temporary fix, traffic comes back -> Add/tweak timed traffic lights -> Temporary fix, traffic comes back -> Add more travel lanes -> Temporary fix, traffic comes back -> Change intersection to/from roundabout -> Temporary fix, traffic comes back -> Add bypass lanes -> Temporary fix, traffic comes back -> Add alternate routes, demolishing buildings -> Temporary fix, traffic comes back -> Add even more travel lanes, demolishing buildings -> Temporary fix, traffic comes back -> Now this...
    In one or two episodes I guarantee all the traffic will inevitably come back. In Cities Skylines, as in real life, the only way to actually address traffic is to reduce the number of cars. Let's see some more/better public transit, more bike and pedestrian infrastructure, and more mixed zoning, lest we continue on with endless traffic fix videos that, while very entertaining, clearly don't work.

    These vanilla overpasses are great but I do not like the curved ones because one direction has always been traffic that went through the junction collision-free. 8:54 This double right turn is unsatisfying in a similar way because these right turns go and always went quite smoothly - if you keep the initial overpass setup (and don't do the long bypass over the roundabout)* there is also another option: turning the three-way junction into a four-way junction by continuing the collector road. That way traffic from a district on one side of the arterial ex-stroad (Spring Hills) to districts on the other side (Crest) could cross the arterial where overpasses exist instead of turning onto the arterial to leave it somewhere else.
    18:08 Similar thing here: how many of these [talking about vehicles on the lanes you are adjusting] would love an option to drive straight-on because the route is much shorter? If the overpass followed the former stroad this option would come with an affordable pricetag.
    *) Having argued against the long bypass, I feel like I need to offer a different solution for the backed up roundabout. Vanilla Overpass is only necessary because it branches off a road vertically [to a bridge or tunnel] from the median of a two-way road. 31:32 But in your roundabout you split the two-way roads into one-ways - this split might be moved away from the roundabout a little bit and then offers you the opportunity to branch off / merge in an additional one-way that can go into a bridge.

  • @UTBanjo
    @UTBanjo 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    At 27:32, if you turn left from the road on the right side of the screen, you are stuck going straight since there is no node to let you get out of that inside lane.

    I would say that the overpass corner should have a less sharp corner on it. Don't cut directly over the the roundabout, comma maybe make it a little bit more of a sweeping curve.

    you need a node inbetween your two ramps. Right now if they enter the straight on ramp they are forced to go into your left turn ramp. Put a node in the middle so they can dive off to the right and make a right turn on your main street.

  • @beerforlife32

    If there isn't a 1-2-1 Version I think a 1-4-1 would fit better at a t-crossing (lane mathamatics).
    Also if you want to use time traffic lights, make your own setup, because you only need 2 cycles not 3.
    At 11:00 if you make the right crossing a 1-4-1 and keep the left as a 2-2-2, then people from the left junction can reach the overpass on the right junction. At the moment only the people who use the left overpass can also use the right overpass, because there is no node to change the lane.
