I really appreciate that you played the same riff, so we can actually hear the difference. Too many people in shootouts just play whatever for each pedal making it much harder to judge something.
The Blues Driver is really great. At lower settings you can get a nice, sparkly Swervedriver-esque sound, but you can also dime the gain and it becomes like a Fuzz Face.
The Blues Driver is easily some of the most bang you can get for your buck. I have a few pedals I prefer, but they’re like double the price. The only other great (distortion/fuzz/overdrive) pedal you can get for that cheap is a Big Muff.
dude! I also got into My Bloody Valentine after watching Lost In Translation. The scene when she's in the taxi (if I remember correctly) in Tokyo is so sublime. I remember thinking WHO is this band? Shoegaze can really create that magical place that most other genres can't. Side Note: Whenever I heard someone mention My Bloody Valentine before watching this film I always thought they were talking about Bullet For My Valentine. I remember thinking "I didn't know Bullet For My Valentine was around in the 80's."
I really loved the Digitech Hot Rod Distortion here. I was working on another screen while listening to the video and the Hot Rod Distortion was the pedal that made me stop what I was doing and pay attention to the video. Really loved how transparent it sounds yet it adds a really...warm/nostalgic sound. You make me want to spend all my money on pedals, damn it.
Haha. So cool to hear that. But I feel the same about it. I think the band STAR by Scott Cortez alias Astrobrite uses it all the time. Love that sound.
The Hot Rod is very cheap pre-owned so buying one won't break the bank! You can pick one up for about the same price you would pay new for the Behringer Super Fuzz (which sounds horrible in this video).
@@alangordon8190 I can't believe that the Behringer sounded so bad when I checked it. I must have done something wrong. It could also be my gear combo. But it's super interesting how everyone experiences gear differently.
As someone who was into shoegaze first time around especially while I was at uni, I thought you did a really interesting introduction to the genre explaining it in a way that was even new and original to me so cheers for that. I also really like the way you keep your playing inside of a template to help us compare and understand the pedals - it's a really helpful format and sounds really good too.
Thank you so much for the kind words. Sometimes it feels like everyone has a different explaination of the genre as it's very vaguely defined. :) I'm happy you liked the format.

But that does not mean we can never change old habits if motivated to make the effort.. I now own a stupidly large collection of fuzz pedals. There's no reason why big chords shouldn't sound good through some of them...???
I got into shoegaze when I saw Alison on 120 minutes when I was a kid in the 90's and couldn't find the song again until someone told me about the genre in highschool. I checked it out and it made me so nostalgic that I was instantly addicted.

I have more of a dreampop tone, a Jazzmaster into (all boss, all japanese models) Boss SD-1, then into an ME-X pedal tray, which has a BF-2 Flange, a DC-3 Digital Dimension, and a PH-2. The ME-X has some very interesting sounds, the pitch shift tracks pretty well, especially when used in conjunction with my e-bow. It also has a chromatic detune, that when you mix with the dual delays (one short, one long) and a nice spacious reverb, it sounds like the guitar is dripping into space. I noticed that the guitarist for Asobi Seksu had one in a live video I saw, which was cool, I wish i had gotten to see them live as I could have chatted with him about what use he got out of it, and how many songs he used it on, etc. Not many people use them anymore, and mine is well over 20 years old at this point.

This is a phenomenal video. Easily one of the best shootouts I’ve seen, the music is excellent, and even better that you shared the chords. I can’t wait to check out more of your content! My favorite combo for shoegaze-type sounds is EQD Dream Crusher and Afterneath. They give vast noisy sound while still letting the notes come through.
I usually stick with the "Big 3": Big Muff, Rat and Blues Driver. JHS Cheese Ball has some good sounds and I've just gotten an Old Blood Noise Alpha Haunt which is a very versatile fuzz so I'll see what I can conjure up with that one.
My favorite complimentary fx to this riff was the Waza/Boss sound. Or the Soda Miser sound on your pink Boi. That with the disaster/destroyer pedal at the end would make a solid riff fx sequence to a song, or have them all engaged at once!

I'm surprised you only use one of the two settings on the Behringer Super Fuzz? That little thing is my go to Distortion nowadays. Another cool trick I use is putting the Boost setting on my drum machine. It gives it a real hard, slap, in your face punch.
Hey Max, it's true. I actually forgot to record it. But at the moment of making the video the sound of Fuzz1 just didn't seem right. I had problems getting a good sound out of it. I tried few distortion from Boss and they are probably for me the worst distortion i ever heard. I also have a Marshall Jackhammer, very cool pedal for leads but for chords it can go too fat. But you can adjust the filter and the coutour of the sound and it's very nice. But yeah the best distortion that i ever heard and play it's the Proco RAT, through my avalanche run and a flanger it's sound so great!
im kind of insane so i have fuzz at multiple points in my chain. we start with a RAT, into a DBA Fuzz War, into modulation, then reverb, then a Big Muff after the reverb
I just use two Distortion/Fuzz pedals, a Zvex Fuzz factory and a Proco Rat clone that has a Silicon/Germanium circuit option. The Fuzz factory is just as wild as you want it to be and the Rat on germanium can give great distortion sounds plus a great fuzz tone on either circuit option. Apart from that I use a Blues driver basically as a boost pedal, works well for me!
@@berlinshoegazer it’s a great setup, the cost of a genuine Fuzz factory made my eyes water a bit but I compensated by a decent Rat clone and I already had the Blues driver. I prefer to play with my Jazzmaster set up with Irongear P90’s, it’s got a better sound than Humbuckers to me, I tried a Mustang with Irongear Humbuckers that I also have and it just didn’t seem right!

“Thank you, Kenneth!” After you referenced the DF-7 in multiple videos, I finally got one ($75 ebay). Wow - totally worth it and as good as you said! Anyway, GREAT recommendation - now I can sell my Ratt and SD-1 👍
@@berlinshoegazer You really did - and do help! I learn a lot from what you share here. I'll be keeping my Blues Driver since the DF-7 doesn't have that, and now I can put my real Big Muff AFTER my reverse reverb [Holy Grail Max]. From your recommend, I also finally got a MS-70CDR [coming on Monday, also ebay / "like new" $95 including shipping]. Also, really enjoyed your set on SHOXXXBOXXX Live [the puppets not so much, ha ha]. Thanks again, Kenneth. Keep looking down :D
I'm using a Muffuletta, and The Big Muff Russian or Ram's Head settings both sound the best with chords IMO. The Russian especially backs down a lot when you lower the sustain knob, almost going into more of an overdrive sound.
I'd recommend grabbing whatever you happen to have on hand, most people have some random dirt pedal lying around and even fairly trashy sounding pedals can sound great for shoegaze.
Have you ever checked out EarthQuaker's fuzzes. They have so many good ones. I'm a huge fan of their Fuzz Master General and Terminal Fuzzes. The Fuzz Master General has a really cool octave fuzz sound and the Terminal has that vintage velcro zipper sound to it.
Yeah, the Fuzz Master General has almost a Ring Modulation inside.. And the Terminal Fuzz has this squeeziness tha I also love in my DbA Waveformer Destroyer in Filter mode.
Enjoyed your video great Demo’s of fuzz pedals. I would recommend the DBA Fuzz War it’s currently on my board and complex chords still are very clear even when fuzz is cranked, I play through my ac15c1 or my peavey classic 30. I also love the keeyley loomer it’s fuzz circuit is very similar to the big muff plus it’s reverb is good although I use the old noise endeavor dark star for reverb currently. Proco Rat is great, old noise Haunt is an interesting fuzz. I’ve been digging your fuzz creations very cool.
Lost in translation and My Bloody Valentine changed my life ! I rented the movie 2003, just gorgeous!!! I wonder just how many young musicians had this experiences at the same time !?
Great video as always. I use a Danelectro Daddy O going into an EHX Big Muff Pi. The band I'm in uses a TC Electronics Fuzz, modified Proco Rat clone and Daddy O overdrive, with the addition of an EHX LPB-1 and Tube Screamer clone. They all work great with the Digitech Digiverb. I'm also using the Alesis Guitar FX Reverse Reverb programs.
i'd go Hot Rod...great sound for the money...Big Muff would get second place! Ultrablast would be third...looks fun! The others take the fuzz too far man!!

super inspirational but respectfully,, i'm gonna see what pops up on marketplace for under 35 dollars first and hopefully it sounds sorta like this video 😋
I get what you mean about the chords getting lost in the distortion/fuzz. I got a friend that does everything "shoegaze" he only plays jazzmasters and he would say the same thing about the more melodic chords getting lost in the distortion, but I let him borrow a guitar with an emg 81 active pickup and he loved how pronounced the chords sounded, but he did say there is no way in hell he is putting an Emg on his jazzmaster no matter how good it sounds lol...but I suppose that the "crutch" or "purity" shoegazer have, they are very die hard about what guitars, pedals, amps and visual aesthetic they prefer, many shoegazers prefer a certain "look" over function lol.
Hey Kenneth, big fan of the channel, my first pedal was a Zoom MS 70 CDR which I bought on your recommendation! If you're looking for any new pedals to demo in your videos, I highly recommend the EHX Attack Decay, especially for the fuzz! It isn't even marketed as a fuzz pedal, but I found the fuzz setting so be so good it actually replaced my Big Muff. It's the warmest, most saturated fuzz I've ever heard, you can dial in weird low-res glitchy stuff into it too, and the tone shaping has a boost at the cutoff so you can even get synthy sounding sweeps by moving the knob around. It's also got a ton of other features that fit really nicely into a shoegaze aesthetic. I'd love to see what you can do with it! Cheers xx
I like when they go VROO VROO and VREE VREE
hell yeah!

I'm using a Muffuletta, and The Big Muff Russian or Ram's Head settings both sound the best with chords IMO. The Russian especially backs down a lot when you lower the sustain knob, almost going into more of an overdrive sound.
I use it as well! The Russian setting is my light overdrive/breakup tone :) but you gotta love the maxed out Ram's head for Shoegazing.
I'd recommend grabbing whatever you happen to have on hand, most people have some random dirt pedal lying around and even fairly trashy sounding pedals can sound great for shoegaze.
One of my favorite channels, even if you release one video a year! What about the Boss Super Overdrive?
Mate, this is very good content! Definitely new stuff would be amazing! all the best from Warschau. :)
I have the fulltone octafuzz and love it!
great video! i love my blues driver
I use a boss bd2 and a eqd dreamcrusher, i stack them . Good vibes
The Dream Crusher is my favorite fuzz! I love to combine it with the Afterneath reverb... the sounds are huge and vast.
Thank you so much, Blake. Means a lot to me. I'll check out your recommendations. :)
@@berlinshoegazer Your welcome, keep making awesome videos, and designing pedals, most of all keep playing guitar!
/your videos are incredible, don't stop
Ultraaaa blassst is fire 🔥 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 , ULTRAMAN FOR THE WIN
I think Big Muff sound better than all those... good Video Bro.
They all sound good
Loove your channel kenneth im gonna ave some shoegaze videos myself soon!
Great video mate. You should check out the band narrow head, they sound kinda like hum if you like bands like that
i'd go Hot Rod...great sound for the money...Big Muff would get second place! Ultrablast would be third...looks fun! The others take the fuzz too far man!!
I’m getting decent results with a boss ds-1 and a big muff. Would really like to give a blues driver a go. Nice video. Thanks

I have a big muff circa 1978 model. You ought to build a song around those chords. Sounds catchy.
super inspirational but respectfully,, i'm gonna see what pops up on marketplace for under 35 dollars first and hopefully it sounds sorta like this video 😋
got a big muff, a rat, a fz-m, to go along with the behringer od300 i already had. and man, it sounds so beautiful.
+blues driver and ocd fulltone sounds fuzzy at the max gain
great shoegaze-shootout! i'm using an old vox overdrive v810 into jekyll and hyde visual soud into twosome dual fuzz from blackout effectors...
Would like to here that sound. Pretty cool combination. 👌
@@berlinshoegazer be my guest!👍
Thank you for this!!!
Great video! thanks!!
I think the ocd by fulltone works pretty well
Great video ❤
hot rod competes so good
Yeah, it's such a great little and overlooked pedal.
@@berlinshoegazer I like that sound too! Is it analog or digital?
@@roodjacklija I believe it's digital.
Cheers xx
Wow. That sounds super interesting. Thank you for that comment. I'll check it out. :)
Imagine this but DONE IN THE CONTEXT OF A MIX
I will remember it for a next video.
