    I made a Metra blazer in the spring in a pinstripe navy ponte. I had to give a big presentation at work, 600 people. Workshop lasted all day and I was running around- so I had to be comfortable. I got a ton of compliments on the Metra- and everyone asked where I bought it. I love it! I will me making more.

    Whitney, another great video. You helped me decide to go ahead with the Metro Blazer in a navy ponte I own with a matching dress. That's a remake of things I wore non-stop in the 70's. But speaking of the 70's, I think of ponte as an all polyester fabric similar to double knit then. But you mentioned blends. It has been a while since you have done a fabric video. Perhaps that would be an idea with all your travels. Hope your mom is doing well. Still praying.

    • @TomKatStitchery
      @TomKatStitchery  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a great idea! Ponte has changed quite a bit since the 70s. I can definitely talk more about that!

      Stopped at an Amish general store this afternoon (central Wisconsin) and found lots of polyester ponte in the clothing fabrics. I have to say I was rather amazed.

    The brown plaid is so pretty. Using it for the blazer was a great choice. So good with your skin tone and brings out the color of your eyes. With the turtleneck and flared jeans, it’s such a long lean silhouette. And the print belt is perfection with the outfit. I was thinking I need a blazer in my wardrobe and you have convinced me. I also need a turtleneck that fits my thick neck, so I’ll have to try the Arlington based on how yours looks with that blazer.

    • @TomKatStitchery
      @TomKatStitchery  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This was my first "straight" Arlington and I'm really loving how it fits. Its more relaxed than the Itch to Stitch Hepburn so a bit different, but I really love the two I just made!

    Hi Whitney, This style of video today is very helpful because I can learn your method of creating choices for your wardrobe including accessorising. It is very comprehensive - delightful and educational. My colour palette is the same as your friend whom you featured a little while ago now (summer palette). Are you going to do a similar video for her colours too please? I loved her choices:-) and Im very curious to see the outcomes. Thank you for all you do for us - you are a gem! xx

    I made a scuba suede Metra with the wider collar copying Karina's hack with unfinished edges. I wanted a lightweight coverup for a summer wedding and it turned out great. Of course, it was a beautiful day so the jacket didn't get worn. However, it's useful for autumn. I plan another with the shawl collar using the full instructions in ponte, which I've never sewn before.

    Hi Whitney, can you please share if there is anything special that you need to do for a lower break line for the collar? Your cream collar appears to break quite a bit higher than the one you are wearing...I much prefer the lower break because it elongated the collar. Thank you for another wonderful video!

    • @TomKatStitchery
      @TomKatStitchery  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly, I just steamed it into shape where I wanted it. the break is actually higher on the plaid one, but I just pressed it into shape where I wanted it. Knit is much more forgiving!

    Great video as always! I was curious if you made these all in the same size. I'm asking as I want to make one fit like your plaid one, seems like there is more distance between the centre fronts.(I always think that looks more slimming)

    • @TomKatStitchery
      @TomKatStitchery  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They are all thee the same size and have the same modifications. The plaid one is just a bit more stable of a knit (the other two have more drape). All three are a viscose/poly/spandex blend, but the the plaid has a bit less viscose and a bit more poly than the two solid ones.

    Great video, Whitney! I haven't bought this one, but you definitely have me reconsidering. I was wondering if you think a stretch woven suiting might work with this pattern? Something with 10-20% stretch maybe?
    I was also thinking one could reduce the width or height of the shawl and make it a standing collar too?
    Thanks again and hope your mom is doing well!

    • @TomKatStitchery
      @TomKatStitchery  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those are great ideas! The pattern is drafted for 25% stretch so if you are using less, you may need to size up. However, I think a stretch woven would work just fine as long as the stretch percentage is there! It would be fun to play with the collar and I think with some playing around you could get a standup collar!

I've been trying to sew my garments in order, so I'm not quite to the Metra - but might have to change the order :) Quick Question:: Can you recommend a steamer, please? Thanks!

  • @victoriahannah1633
    @victoriahannah1633 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Oh those blazers give those outfits that bit of oomph ! . That just sets them off. Update on my TDCO pants fitting. Of course you know newbies are going to struggle some. There were a few learning curves at first. I did have my husband help me pin & mark waistband in back. On first attempt I pinned & marked top of leg to low. When I sewed waistband on the center seam didn’t reach waistband. However I just raised line up & it worked better. I may need to raise it 1/4-1/2 inch as the inner corner reaches but could be at bit better. I then saw the hem was not balanced . So I put a fold at top of muslin leg right beneath the waistband. The front is looking good nice & smooth. The back is almost there but the center seam goes about inch past my center and is little too baggy. I have a couple of darts but I’m thinking of taking a 1/4 inch seam down middle of back leg to bring it in a tad. Then I just have to taper in leg on outer seam. Then I just got to wrack my brain figuring out how to transfer my muslin changes to my pants pattern. Even though I had some difficulties I think I’m going to like this method of fitting pants. I like that I don’t have to mess with inseam. I never could get tapering😊 in pants legs right. I like that by doing waistband & hemming muslin leg first it really helped me to balance the top & hem better. I could look right down at hem & see it was not straight and straighten it. My inner seam looks good. Now just to bring outer seam in so it looks nice & get a little bagginess out of my backside. I hope this was not boring.

    Enjoyed the video-enough so that I, once again, am buying a LN pattern that you’ve shown! Was wondering if you changed the length on the brown plaid. It could be just difference between you actually wearing it compared to the white one hanging on mannequin.

    • @TomKatStitchery
      @TomKatStitchery  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The length of all three has been shortened 1”. The white one has more drape than the plaid one so that could be the difference as well!

  • @denisedorsey2889
    @denisedorsey2889 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Your Metra blazers look different from one another as you stand there. Is it because of the mannequins? (I’d have to try to compare your twirl videos for a more accurate look). The lapels on the red look uneven, compared to the ivory (just being picky, I know) and the plaid seems to have a larger front opening. I’m getting ready to cut mine out and sew it up and I just wondered about any fit adjustments you might have made, or other little changes to get the different looks. Perhaps it’s the fabrics themselves? You look stunning in the plaid, by the way.

    • @kellietrudel8222
      @kellietrudel8222 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m looking at the red and I also feel one lapel looks longer than the other but I’m wondering if it was done intentionally? Or is it how it’s hanging? They are pretty tho and I love them. Whitney?
      Also, the shirt under the red blazer…#goals! So well done

    • @TomKatStitchery
      @TomKatStitchery  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the mannequins are what are throwing the different blazers. All three were made with the same size and alterations (I made the size M with full bust and shortened the body and the sleeves 1"). There is a good chance the red one was crooked on the mannequin as well. The plaid on is a more stable knit than the solid ones so that is playing a part in how that is sitting as well!

    • @TomKatStitchery
      @TomKatStitchery  2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Metra blazer is next on my list…question…approx how long does it take for Minerva fabric to arrive in the States? I swoon over their fabrics, but am hesitant to order because of the distance the fabric has to travel…I am not very good at planning ahead! 😅

  • @judykski
    @judykski 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I started sewing with Ponte back in 2009 when it had started to show up in sewing stores and on fabric websites. I no longer purchase Ponte with polyester in it due to pilling in high contact areas. I prefer Ponte with a rayon/nylon/stretch (lycra, spandex, elastane) fiber content.

    • @TomKatStitchery
      @TomKatStitchery  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The rayon/nylon/spandex is my typical go-to as well. However, if the poly is low enough, I think it holds up well.

If so, could you advise me on what adjustments I would need to make? I know this a lot to ask but really would like to make this blazer. Thanks for any help you can give.😊

    • @TomKatStitchery
      @TomKatStitchery  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It could definitely be sized down! I have a petite adjustment video on the channel here: th-cam.com/video/IxQVU5V-pD0/w-d-xo.html . I think this combined with shortening the sleeves and the body at the waist would work great. You might also need a narrow shoulder adjustment and I have that tutorial on the channel as well: th-cam.com/video/QezzzOhi3m0/w-d-xo.html . You might need or want to take in your side seams a bit, but I think this combination should get you something that works really great!

    have you thought about making the blazer in stretch corduroy

    • @TomKatStitchery
      @TomKatStitchery  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't, but as long as the fabric has at least 25% stretch, it would work!

    I would never have considered Love Notions without your work. And, is it possible (and reasonably easy) to change a coat like the Love Notion's' Octave from double breasted to single breasted?

    • @TomKatStitchery
      @TomKatStitchery  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven’t made the Octave yet, but I would be able to tell how hard or easy it would be once I’ve looked at the actual pattern. It is definitely possible!

    Wow-the blazers make you look tall and slim! I looked at your link to Minerva and all of the Ponte is sold out! Do you have another recommendation?

      It is?!! Take a look at the StyleMaker Arietta Ponte (stylemakerfabrics.com/products/arietta-ponte-de-roma-solid-burgundy). I had that sample in my sample stack and it feels nice and stable for the Metra. Also, Stylemaker has a beautiful pin stripe Ponte that would be amazing (as well as some dark florals that would be cool). stylemakerfabrics.com/products/designer-pin-stripe-ponte-knit-midnight

    i am a fan of the shawl collar. This might be the one to get me over my knit phobia, stable knit is the way to go. What seam finish would you do for the boiled wool? some sort of raw edge flat felt? I love the length of the red and plaid. I will have to watch video on the pocket.

      I love the shawl collar as well! Stable knits (aka Ponte) is definitely the way to go to conquer any knit sewing fears. As far as the boiled wool, you could definitely use a raw edge flat fell! That would be beautiful!

    Did you have to do any adjustments as far as the bust and shortening the length?

    • @TomKatStitchery
      @TomKatStitchery  ปีที่แล้ว

      I made the Medium with the full bust front and then I shorten it 1" at the waist and shorten the sleeves 1" and that's it!

    What size of metra blazer did you make?

    • @TomKatStitchery
      @TomKatStitchery  ปีที่แล้ว

      I make the size medium with the full bust front. I shorten the bodice and the arms 1".

    Did you shorten the pattern at all?

    • @TomKatStitchery
      @TomKatStitchery  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I did. I shorten most Love Notions patterns 1" at the waist as I have a short torso/high waist.

    You always look good, but that pairing of the blazer and flair leg jeans is spectacular! Is it possible that you’ve lost weight? Or is it the outfit? Or is it both? I don’t know, but I do know that our legs don’t get longer as adults, and those wider leg jeans, paired with the blazer that leaves that vertical space through the top half of your body makes you appear to be suddenly much taller. 😍

    I have a bundle of patterns I want now! Unfortunately I called the local copy centre. It is soooo expensive to print them! Even one A0 costs more then the whole pattern🥲
    I think all the time I did spend looking on and reading about the patterns, are a time not well spent😅

      I’m pretty sure there is an online option for those in Europe. I can’t remember what it’s called, but I would google online copy shops. It’s much cheaper that way!
