- Rain, snow, wind and a flat tyre! I leave Jindabyne through the Monaro Plains down the Eastern Escarpment heading to the Pacific Coast. Nowhere to camp so stealth camp it is, before heading to Sydney where I drop in on Craftsman Dave.
Dave is a real craftsman. That chair was simply fabulous, and what a great design feature for the cabinet. I’m simply in awe of people that have the skills to be able to create such amazing furniture.
Yes he is, and I am in awe of people who can great things too. I showed Dave your message and it made his day.

Hay mate what I do when I’m camping ⛺️ off the bike , is I also take an Army ( I’m X- Regular Army ) an Army ground or hoochie they are light and compact and serve a few purposes
1. After rain or dew put outside tent to pack it up on dry ground .
2. Use as an extra blank at night if it gets to cold
3. Or place over the bike
4. Use to change a tyre on .

I was going to name where I came down but was not 100% sure it was correct so I left it out (I didn't note it down and do have any tracking apps etc) I am pretty sure it is Nerriga Rd Between Nerriga and Sassafras NSW...... I think 😳. The next trip (which I'll be leaving soon on, I'll be more onto things like this. This trip was just a round idea and I wasn't even sure I would film it all but it's been a lot of fun so I am going to go again.

6:19 A good base layer set (or single piece) from a ski shop would do wonders in comfort.

PS: The motorcycle mode of Garmin XT would save you a lot of dead ends. But where is the fun in that 😉
thanks mate, glad you enjoyed it, yes put my thermal on that i use in the snow, it seem to work in the end, I wasn't expecting it to be that cold there in summer, I'll have to be better prepared next time.

It has been an epic trip.
Another great video. I currently reside in the US and am planning a motorcycle trip to Beartooth HWY in Wyoming. The altitude gets over 3500 Meters. And during the summer you can get snow. Lucky for me I have heated grips and heated seats (I ride a K1600 GTL), my wife has a heated vest. However, when we come to Australia next year, I won't be so lucky as I will be purchasing a bike in OZ on the cheap. Glad to see that you survived the mountains

It doesn't get that cold in the mountains here, it's more heat you need to worry about especially in the summer.

Just a note with the flat tyre - I have had numerous issues with a servo air hoses and getting a good connection onto the tyre valves due to spoke wheels on my Himalayan. AMX and Shark Leathers here on the Gold Coast both sell “right angle” adapters for $5 - $9 that make topping up the air with spoke wheels so easy - you should be able to get them from MC accessory shops anywhere (?). Great video 👍.
Thanks mate. I ended up getting a small lithium batteries power air pump, so I have it with me and don't need to rely on petrol station as we know how reliable they are.

I couldn't help wondering how may tyre places you must have passed with that puncture Ryan 😄.
I miss needing to use chain lube, it's been too many years, I used to lube down the back of the rear sprocket top to half way down, rolling the bike forward for the next section if I couldn't lift the back wheel to spin it, spraying just at the top (a prop under the foot peg opposite the kickstand did the trick lifting the wheel). I found this the best way to get the whole link including the O rings.
I actually stop at a few more places to check the air (didn't want to bore you with the repetitiveness of it all). In the end it seem I put the pressure in and it push the tire at the exact spot to stop the air from coming out.
Yes I could have used the centre stand to oil the chain, it was a case of me being way to lazy haha.

Cheers for the post 👍finding a working air pump in garages is getting harder all the time, the only garage near me changed their pump to (bar readout) 🤦🏻♂️I thought bars were where people hung out and drank beer 🤪 now I have to figure out what my psi is in bar. Yes it is getting harder to find air pumps that are actually working.

@@freewayproject well this summer was a total non event but usually March is the most settled and things have calmed down after the school hols. South island had a good summer this year and because we are quite skinny compared to AU things can change very quickly. Avoid Christmas at all costs, everywhere is packed and it brings a special type of motorist out.
Well March it is them (maybe a bit of February and April too). Now to worth out everything else to make that happen.

Yes Scott glad you picked it up and it wasn't just my jaw that dropped. The swell is manly from the south east there and that wave has to wrap around 180 degrees to get into that bay. There were a few others that were better than the one filmed.

but this is what I am using, a DJI Osmo Action for filming when on the bike (from the helmet) otherwise I using a Sony A7SIII. I am taking photos with a Sony A7RIII, I only have room for 2 lenses Sony GM 24mm 1.4 and Sony GM 70mm - 200mm 2.8. I also have an old DJI Mavic Pro drone from 2016
@3:50 you can turn the servo pump nozzle over to use the other side , the angle in the head is made to fill bike tyres 😉 avoiding threading the whole thing thru the spokes @Joe Ryan
Hi mate, the width of my back rim is to wide for it to be at an angle I can get it on. If I had an extension on the valve then it would work. I have another solution for the new trip, much easier, I'll bring it out soon.

Yea, in the late 70's I owe'd a Honda 1973 XL 350, I was in my early 20's living in Canterbury(NZ) I did a lot of by my self camping trips to great surf spots X's. I have been living in the Great SE since 1980 and still to this day would love to get my hands on a XL 350 (silver & blue) like the one I owe'd in NZ. I have own'd many bikes since I have been here, but not an adventure. My road bikes have been mostly Triumph's, my 750 Bonneville could go all most anywhere, but my Triumph Daytona 955i and my Rocket 111's cant. Very soon I am going to sell my much loved Daytona for 23 years and buy a Royal Enfield Himalayan and head up to the Far North. If you may be able to give me advice where there are free camping sites I would very much appreciate that. PS, keep on keeping on the great work. Thank you.
That's a lot of bike history you have there. The Honda 1973 XL 350 sounds like it would have been a super cool bike, it sounds like it created a lot of great memories.

There is an App called Wikicamps the Australia version it shows all the free camps, plus other paid site if needed.
Lucky you, the pump at the BP in Jindabyne was out of order last week! Not so lucky waking up to a flat tyre! Really enjoying your videos, please keep them coming.

Another cracking video Joe and as you said to me last week it’s certainly getting colder, I don’t usually think of anywhere in oz getting that cold 🥶 but it obviously does in certain places so stay warm and safe journey mate and looking forward to your next video 👍

I have a portable usb air pump by xiaomi, best thing ever, because i hated to stop only to add air to the tyres, now i inflate them in my house a night before leaving. And if its a long trip, i take with me

Don't worry Malcolm I won't be home for long. I think a couple weeks where I'll do a video on the gear I took and another on the bike. Then I am thinking of heading west........ that's as far as I have got with the planing stage 😂😂😂. I'll just have to wing it..... 🤔 maybe that's what I'll call the next series "winging it"😂
I am using Final Cut Pro, the 3 main editing software are all good, experience for these types of videos. I am not collaborating with anyone, I do not have special effect etc... so it's more about speed of use. I have use Final Cut Pro since version 4 or 5. so I know it like the back of my hand, also I am on a Mac laptop so FCP is the fastest editing program as it is optimised for the Mac.

I think iMovie (if you're on an Apple computer ) is an entry leave to FCP, and I think comes free with the computer (it used to). an easy way to get into it.

Hi Joe, another great vid. Thanks for sharing your journey! Can I ask a question, Are you running tubeless tyres? I thought the himmy's spoked wheels suited lube style tyres. If so, I will also put tubeless on my himmy next tyre change!
Thanks Steven, glad you enjoyed it. I have what came with the bike so I have tubes in the tires. You would need to add that special tape to be able to seal the inside where the spokes coming to the rim. I am sure it would be possible.
Never lubed a chain ever. It just lasts so much longer.
After rain then dirt the rain then dirt the chain stiffens up in sections the mechanics said the only way to get it to loosen up again is to clean it and re lube, it worked for me.
Watched all 17 episodes. Great filming and editing. Tasmania looks more interesting than main land Australia. Heated vest would be a great addition instead of all the layers, once you have tried one you will wonder why you never had one before. Have you ever ridden in Scotland or Ireland? If not you would love it. Good luck.

It was only one day that was cold and a couple cooler day over the month and there is nowhere else in Australia that is colder it mainly like the first few episode to hot to wear riding gear haha. But definitely will look into a heated vest when riding in colder places, would be good with out needing all the jackets.
I have not ridden in Scotland or Ireland but would love to, from what I have seen the landscapes are stunning. Are there a lot of trails there to get off the main roads?

@@freewayproject Unfortunately Scotland and Ireland don't have off road trails, but wild camping is allowed. Some of the Tasmanian scenery is similar to Scotland and Ireland. What bike did you have before the R.E.?
I gather wild camping would be best in Summer.
Yes the distance from the equator is similar for Scotland/Ireland and Tasmania, just towards the opposite poles so it would make sense some of the vegetation and scenery might look similar.
I also have a KTM EXC-F enduro bike, I was doing photo/film shoot in Canada with the KTM guys here and had to ride bike to get into some remote country, loved it ever since.
I road around Australia last year on a Husqvarna 401 with 2 other mates for one of there birthdays, totally the wrong bike for it but a lot of fun for 50 days.
Did I see something in the tyre at 3.45?
just a stone caught between the tread, it ended up being a pin hole size leak, that if the tube was in the right position it stopped leaking.

thank Sudesh, glad you are enjoying the series. Yes I could do with a wider angle lens, I only have 2 with me a 24mm and a 70-200mm. I cold put the camera on a tripod but then it's to far a way to get good sound, I could then get a lavalier mic but then I have to set it all up and when I just want to say something quick to camera in 10 seconds it doesn't seem worth it, so I'll have to save up for a wide angle lens at about 14 - 16mm.
Can I ask why you think it would be better with more distance form the camera?

7:59 how much range do you from a tank?
The Himalayan tank is 15 L, I have gotten 420km when I filled up I put 14L in, so there was still one L left in the tank, doing the math mean I theoretically could get 450km. The extra tanks on the sides of my bike are 5L so should get me 150km each. So in total I could get 750km. but this is riding conservatively, if hard on the throttle obviously you'd get a lot less.

Yourself and Tina and Jason who are travelling Aus on a pair have convinced me to get one instead of a bigger adventure bike I was looking at for twice the price. Took one for a test ride and loved it
I just saw something online that claims 462km range on the Himalayan so my experience seem to support that, again depend how hard you twist that throttle 😂
All adventure bike are great as they get you out there, I think it's more about stepping back and understanding what type of riding you want to do and what is your true ability on a bike (not what we all would like to be able to ride like). I have a dirt bike which is epic but to ride fast down a trail (using all the ability of the bike) alone in the outback with camera gear on my bike, well lets just say the ride would be over in the first hour or so with me coming off and destroying all the gear (and having to service it ever 15 hours would mean it getting service every 3 or 4 days). The Himalayan is a great bike for exploring, if you going flat-out you have to concentrate hard so you miss out on all the things you could be exploring. Well that what I have found.

You're lucky your air is free in all of the petrol statins you have shown us. Here in France you pay up or shut up : normally one euro, about 1.60 aud. Nothing is free in France, soon they'll be charging us for rainwater (already underway) and the air we breathe. Bloody sharks!
I guess it would be better to take a small electric pump when riding there. I haven't been to France for 20 years, loved the place, would be awesome to come back and explore on a bike.
