      No real need for a tail gun if you move the top turret back on top of that bulge and make it remote control. That would also clear the engines. Bottom turret could be similarly placed.
      New much higher power engines would also be useful giving it a chance against modern star fighters.

    So a few comments on this updated/re-imagined Y-wing:
    First, there actually was a reconnaissance variant of the Y-wing in Legends, called the Longprobe, which definitely makes this variation interesting. However, I feel like it's more of a U-wing successor than something that feels like a development of the Y-wing after its original role has become obsolete.
    So, what would I do for a Y-wing update? Well, the original Y-wing's closest real-world parallel in WWII air forces would probably be a dive bomber... and much like the Y-wing being obsolete, those disappeared after WWII and the beginning of the jet age. The closest modern equivalent would be ground-attack aircraft.
    So yeah, I'm saying I'd make an A-10-inspired Y-wing, with a huge rotary BRRRRRRRRT blaster.

      I totally agree, although prop plane Ground Support Aircraft made a substantial comeback in recent years. If you think about it in the eyes of cost effectiveness, fueling and sending an A-10 on a strike mission on a low value target from a less than prepared countryside airfield is super cost inefficient. The ordinance alone would be absurdly overpriced for a few militia soldiers. That's why the Army has been employing Propeller Ground Support units lately to great effect in more rural areas. While fighting against a large target in an area with enough infrastructure might be perfectly suited for a robust Ground Support ship like the A-10, most skirmishes our forces currently undertake in require less than overkill results. That's why I enjoy this ships role, because it could provide ground support to smaller Militia skirmishes that an up an coming resistance would find themselves in a lot, instead of full scale battles. Having one or two of these in each strategic system would be much more cost effective than having an entire squadron of Y-wings in each system, and would allow those fighters to be assigned to more pertinent roles instead of providing fire support to local militias.

      @k-874 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Tbh I already cooked up a Y-Wing design that was litteraly an A-10 and here's so basic info about my A-10 Y-Wing:
      Looks:
      The Y-Wing would be heavily based off the Rebellion Y-Wing but modifications such as a sleeker profile, stronger more compact engines and overall a more polished design would make it ressemble a resistance Y-Wing more
      Lore:
      The Rebellion saw the need of a ground attack fighter as they noticed that their infantry are getting shredded by Imperial Walkers. Their first idea was to simply use the Y-Wing or X-Wing but both are deemed innefective because the Y-Wing was too slow, vulnurable and have a relatively small payload of 8 torpedoes and the X-Wing's laser cannons doesn't have enough punch to deal with heavily armored imperial walkers like the AT-DP and AT-AT, the 2 most common walkers deployed to serve defensive roles by the Empire. So a group of really talented mechanic and engineer decided to modify a Y-Wing since they have more Y-Wings to spare compared to X-Wings. A lot of modifications had been done such as making the profile sleeker and engines more powerful and compact to increase speed and maneuverability, the modified Y-Wing looks almost like a completely new model of the Y-Wing but they still needed to increase it's firepower. At first the engineers suggested to just increase the amount of payload but a mechanic suggested if they can put his personally modified Heavy rotary laser cannon which he salvaged from a Veteran AT-ST(Veteran AT-ST is an elite variant of the AT-ST which supported heavier armor and 2 rotary heavy laser cannons and it's 100% cannon! Look it up it's awesome). The Engineers agreed to try it and they successfully equipped it on a heavy fixed mount below the fuselage and even made it stronger to give it better anti-vehicle capabilities but there's a problem, the heavy rotary cannon consumed more energy than the power source can produce so they had to remove systems that consumed power, these included the entire shielding system, 2 medium laser cannons on the front,the twin ion cannon turret at the top of the cockpit and even the life support systems. To compensent with the lost of life support system they used a captured Imperial TIE pilot suit and gave it rebel marks and colors. The mechanics also equipped the ship a generator the same to the one you'll see on GONK DROIDS to add even MOH POWAH BABEH. The result is stunning looking ship, even with the bulky rotary cannon below the fuselage the modified Y-Wing had better maneuverability than the other Y-Wings and is slightly faster. Due to the rotary cannon being the only weapon this Y-Wing had targetting systems had also been removed and replaced with a littleral gunsight which proved pretty effective. This Y-Wing is also given stronger repulsor lifts as it will dive to ground at incredible speeds and needs power to pull up so they did. The finished ship was presented to some generals among the rebellion,they are quite impressed but they don't think a heavy rotary cannon would be enough. The trial day would soon come however as it'll be deployed to provide infantry support on a rebel assault to an imperial outpost. The most daredevil and skilled pilot they can find is on the controls and are quite impressed with the handling of the ship. A group of pinned down rebel infantry called in an airstrike and the modified Y-Wing was sent. Fingeres we're crossed that it'll work and then... The Y-Wing opened fire on the imperial forces, the gun had pin-point accuracy and killed 8 squafs worth of stormtroopers along with 2 AT-DPs on it's first gun run. Both Imperial and Rebel forces we're shocked on the performance of the new ship so the Imperials tried to focus fire on the Y-Wing but the Y-Wing easily evaded the oncoming fire and performed more gunruns and pretty much annihilated all Imperial walkers and defense. Everyone is impressed with the capabilities of the ship and gained it's nickname "The Shredder". It was great but after the battle it showed some serious flaws. Firstly the gun is prone on overheating and nearly fried it's own eletrical components on the process, the new engines are great but they are deemed unreliable with how maintenance heavy they are and the lack of shielding and external panels made it take considerable damage even by light blaster fire, the ship is also unable to engage other starfighters as the rotary gun can only fire short bursts and is innacurate unless firing on a fixed direction. After some repairs and maintenance and ship was then sent to engage an Imperial Arquitens Class Light Cruiser and it tore the cruiser apart with it's powerful laser cannon. It would perform a lot of combat missions and made Imperial forces pee their pants in the sight of this thing but unfortunately the Y-Wing will be destroyed in the Space Battle Over Scariff as the rotary gun and generator overheated too much that the shio exploded since the extreme heat caused internal fires thay reached the fuel lines leading on a chain reactions of explosions, both the pilot and astromech we're killed but not before doing serious damage on the shield gate. In the end of the day "The Shredder" was a deadly tool of war but it having no armor, being too maintenance heavy and prone to overheating made it a headache to keep fully functional. When the news of the ships destruction spreaded around Imperial Forces we're relived but the Rebels just lost something they will never be able to replace. The people involved in the creation of "The Shredder" and it's brave pilot was given high awards for their creation and contribution to the war effort againsts the Empire and it'll be one of the most well-known ships in the galaxy and would even inspire the external look of the Resistance Y-Wing

    I like the design, though with the upscaling I would think that it'd still be in a strike craft role, just as a heavy bomber instead of a light fighterbomber. The problem with the silly superfortress bombers that were used in TLJ would be solved with a variant of this design that eschewed the expanded crew cabin in favor of an actual bomb bay. The reason people ask where the Y-wings were isn't because they think the Y-wing would be better than an X-Wing, it's because TLJ introduced something that was WORSE than the original Y-wing in the intended role. Most people have recognized that battle of yavin era Y-wings would have been more useful not to mention survivable than the bombers that the resistance canonically DID field, and this design simply proves the point, insofar as it shows that you could easily develop an enlarged version of the Y-wing able to put a real payload on target that an X-wing simply wouldn't be able to carry while avoiding the stupidity of the superfortresses.

      I think that was partially the point. Militaries make mistakes like that. Because Rebel fighters hated Y Wings. They were death traps in universe. So it makes sense they made a brand new design. I like the remenisance of airship bombers. And the heavy dutyness. One well placed pay load completely obliterated a dreadnought! Ultimately it's good were getting new ships. And with TLJs theme of learning from failure it makes sense they returned to Y Wings in TROS. Wastydest not only that, but the y wing was at the time, about 40 years old, and still used specific models of technology in its systems, and more modern models weren’t comparable with the old design, while I wish they would redesign it, similar to the model in the videl, having this ship being a still fairly slow and big target, presents big concerns for pilot lives, and considering they are slower and present bigger threats, they would be focused on, and while they have a turret, it has the downside of being on top and having a 180 elevation and 360 turning circle. while I do love the y wing, it served its purpose, and all designs must move on, and be replaced, the x wing is new, and so is the a wing, but the y wing was nearly 2 decades old when they were designed.

      MikaGrof well the resistance couldn’t get their hands on y wings or b wings for that matter because of their limited options when it comes to getting ships, the bombers were capital ship killers and could also destroy cities, and if the republic believed that the resistance had even the slightest thought, then they would restrict the bombers to them, also the resistance bombers were acquired through a scrap heap, so they took those and whatever else, but couldn’t buy y wings or things like that

    What an awesome direction to take the Y wing.
    One minor suggestion though, if you put the turrets up a little higher then they could fire to the rear with nearly no blind spots as well as forward for instances where the extra firepower would be useful, maybe like when attacking a larger ship like the Y wings in rogue one did against the stardestroyer.
    Also we know Elecktronic counter measures exist in star wars and they have been seen in the leading edges of shuttle craft wing's.
    Maybe since this is so much bigger add some in the trailing edge of the "wings" and maybe in the nose so attacking ships can't "lock on" to this target.
    That and a space toilet.
    Thanks!

      Australian knight lad Undoubtedly true. But dropping one bomb? Not Really. I had a game called Star Wars Rogue Squadron. And if them Y wings would have the Advance Spread Proton Bombs that could cause maybe 3 or 4 times the damage maybe more for Everyone bomb. And you can drop more then one per run. And judging by the size of that y wing it’s possible it can carry maybe twice or 3 times the load out compare to the republic and rebel one which is 20 bombs. And one last thing. If they can bring all 12 of them to the target I think they’ll be able to cause enough damage maybe take it out in one go like the single Star Fortress can.

The clone wars featured a Y wing scout bomber, and the early Star Wars had Y Wing "Longprobe" scout variants in the comics, games and books, a Rebellion era craft. The Y wing is a larger ship than the X or A wings, it makes perfect sense for them to have a greater unsupported operating time than the more combat focused craft. The only thing I would like to see in your variant is an upgraded sensor package to help support that scouting focus. Fantastic take on the Y wing!

    How about mixing the Y-Wing with the A-10 Warthog instead? Afterall, it's more aerodynamic than an X-Wing or B-Wing after all...
    Make it an Imperial Walker killer. Give it 2 massive turbolasers that run the length on its central body that the rest of the frame is built around and 2 smaller rapid fire blasters for troop masses. Then put so much armor and shields on the thing that its basically as tough as a Walker. Finally design it to fly while only having a single engine and can replusorlift hover while missing both.
    Make sure it still has torpedoes so it can be multirole.
    Basically the Y-wing is only still in service because it's so popular with the troops but the navy wants to kill it for B-wings which can do the same anti capital ship role in space and stealth X-wings for close air support because they believe every pilot to be as good as Poe Dameron.

    A rescue and reconnaissance "PBY-Wing", well, wing, that *could* under the right circumstances engage heavier targets they got the drop on, but rarely if ever directly engaged in combat, unless supported by a fighter, interceptor, or covered by the rest of their wing, showing more of the peacetime role for the New Republic fleet doctrine that the PBY-Wing would likely fill out.

    Remember: In the Clone Wars era, the Republic Navy's starfighters (V-19 Torrents, Jedi Interceptors, V-Wings, and Z-95s) were almost all lightly armored, rarely had any shields, and could carry little to no heavy ordnance (proton torpedoes, bombs, etc...). Given the state of the Republic's fighter options, it made sense to have a durable, heavily armored and shielded bomber, that could get close enough to a capital ship to deliver its payload of bombs and missiles. To hold these projectiles, a ship of this type would need to be larger, and therefore heavier in weight. This prompted the addition of the Y-Wing's characteristic engine-pods, which could produce enough thrust to move such a big, bulky starfighter.
    By the time the ARC-170 starfighter was introduced, the war was nearly over, and Y-Wings had already proven themselves useful on many battlefronts. In addition, the ARC-170 was designed to be a long-range ARC (Adaptive Reconnaissance Craft), not a bomber. As such, its designers allocated more interior space to sensor equipment and a high-capacity fuel tank, rather than ordnance storage.

    I think, at least where the dreadnought is concerned, that the resistance would have done better with Y-wings instead of the slow, clumsy, vulnerable bombers that were used. Though they would be specialized bombers with a lesser destructive capability, Y-wings are by leaps and bounds faster and more maneuverable. We also know that only 2 or 3 of the bombers were able to drop their payloads before being destroyed. These facts, combined with the lack of any decent point defense and the Y-wing’s increased durability, I think that the resistance would have benefited greatly from the presence of these Y-wings in the battle against the First Order dreadnought. They would have seen a much more efficient destruction of the big ship, not to mention the bombers actually returning from the mission.

    I really love the design of this ship. Bringing back the roots of the original design from the Clone Wars, but also addressing the maintenance and new procedures from the Rebellion. Also finding a new role for the ship which could incorporate its other characteristics & features that were overshadowed (like the turret for example) was brilliant. And of course bringing it back to WWII which so many weapons and ships were based on, just brought the whole thing together. I can definitely see this as a practical and awesome Star Wars ship!

    • @LoneWolf20213
      @LoneWolf20213 5 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @TheSuccTM no no no
      I want a venator that is better built if the new republic were to bring them back, I mean come on, we all like the venator's way better then the ISD of even the Home one anyway

    • @LoneWolf20213
      @LoneWolf20213 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @TheSuccTM actually, I think they took aspect's of the Venator, and just remodeled the ISD since this ship isn't a carrier
      what I mean is to redesign the venator that has that ventral hanger bay and use it's shape and structure to give it a thicker hull and stronger shield's along with covering many weak points, like adding some weapon's to the bottom and front area of the Venator to give it more firepower and effectiveness in capital ship combat

    • @LoneWolf20213
      @LoneWolf20213 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @TheSuccTM well, let's be honest, the ISD was a massive letdown, and the FOSD is just an oversized version of that
      I truly liked the republic ship's, just add some upgrade's and I'm game for an army

    • @LoneWolf20213
      @LoneWolf20213 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @TheSuccTM hey, i liked the way the Venator was going, it was rough around the edges, but it had good bones for design's

    • @ВасилийДанилов-у8я
      @ВасилийДанилов-у8я 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@LoneWolf20213 You miss an important point about the ISD. During GCW,the ship was mostly used for planetary sieges and assault. That point is reinforced by the fact that it has 10k stormtroopers+armor battalion+all the shuttles to carry them onboard. It uses most of its internal space to carry those things,and that's why it has comparatively low fighter capacity and smaller ships like MC80 can match it in firepower. If you look at the cutouts of the ship,then you can see that ISD deep storage facilities have about twice the volume of Venator's prow hangar. If you convert them to carrying starfighters and make a couple of cutouts on top/broadsides of an ISD,you can get a much better version of a Venator. If you read Legends books,then you must know that some of the Imperial Remnant ISDs were converted into this kind of semi-carriers. In "Hand of Thrawn",Pellaeon's "Chimera" had,in addition to like 120 proton torpedo launchers, about 200 starfighters,2/3rds of which were hyperdrive-capsble and could take on capital ships. Even later modifications of ISD like "Anakin Solo" and "Right to Rule" carried up to 500 starfighters,most of which were super-advanced like Defenders and XJ series Xwings

    As slow as the technology moves in SW, it seems highly unlikely that the Y wing would be obsolete so quickly. More likely they just want new ships for new movies, and they also really just wanted money so being completely true to the SW universe really isn't on their agenda.

    i really like this design it makes a lot of sense the armor is placed in locations that wouldnt be a kill shot but likely not be protected by a shield to save on weight by not upgrading to a bigger shield generator for the larger ship or on the drawing board traded out for a stronger shield that cant protect the entire ship but covers the vital areas such as the crew compartment and the places that are exposed are recessed allowing for an additional armor plate to be added if they needed or they can go all in on no armor, the armor layout also protects the machinery from a pursuit and because the resistance is made out of a peace time space navy they wouldn't have a need for a dedicated bomber and used their resources for the specified role

  • @Gigas0101

    The rear of the ship could be modular, switching between additional thrusters, expanded cargo space, extensive ECM/ECCM/Sensor suites, rear ion or blaster hardpoints, expanded bomb bays or rear-firing torpedo launchers... The options are endless and that's just me spitballing while looking at how you designed the back of the thing.

    That's pretty awesome. Something I would add on is based on a modified Y-Wing used by the players in an old D6 campaign, essentially just adding a large box to the rear-top, behind the cockpit, over the droid socket, from one nacelle interior to the other. This "box" can be easily modified for numerous purposes, from extra passengers to significant cargo or even a specialized weapons platform. While it attaches to the top, it should be able to disconnect easily, with its own minimal repulsorlift engine, to ease detachment and maneuvering, but not to function in any but the most desperate or adventurous circumstances as a vehicle by itself.
