      I’m just getting started in the business and my navy summer suits have been great. Footwear has been my issue, and all birds seem too casual. I have two pair and would not consider them wedding appropriate. I’ll give them a try and look for side eyes.

    • @andybowlin
      @andybowlin ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@tobisonbrown I thought the same thing. Until I realized no one is looking at my feet. Black ones seem to be acceptable for my area.. wineries and rustic vibes mostly… Maybe not for super formal black tie events though? They comfy - I like wool runners or tree runners. They have a lot of styles

    This is great! I have two followup questions:
    1. How do you stay hydrated through an eight hour wedding day? Also, how do you balance that with bathroom breaks when you're expected to be taking pictures most of the day?
    2. Is there a better alternative to business cards? I take pictures and videos of bands at street festivals, and would love to find the right way to let people know who I am without wearing a sign or something else super tacky.

      Exactly. Also, honestly when you wear all black a lot of the times guests think you're a caterer or some other vendor. The photographer and the planner are the most important vendors in the room. You should kind of stand out.

    Great topic. I'll add in for pants that look dress but feel great, consider golf pants. They have great stretch and movement, are super comfortable, and look good. Same for shoes. Consider the new modern golf shoes. They are MADE for all day wear and walk (super comfortable) have a textured sole for grip (anyone ever slipped a little on concrete after a walk thru the grass with dress shoes?), and are often waterproof for that heavy dew morning grass or rainy wedding day transitions. The new modern golf shoes look fantastic like most modern dress shoes now.

    Funny enough, I was just discussing if what we wear to weddings as photographers really matters these days? I’ve been told that the couples and people didn’t really care much these days. I’m not inclined to believe that. I used to wear all black but I’ve started wearing more navy blue and browns. Great video bro

    • @jbivphotography
      @jbivphotography  ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I think it does and it doesn't. Basically if you're dressed average you won't make an impact on the guest they more or less won't care or won't really see you. Where as if you dress nice guest will notice you and see you as an important person in the room. Leading to conversations, compliments, or even leads.

    Late to this vid but also wanted to shout out Thompson tees. They're sweatproof undershirts that I wear under my dress shirt. The under arm portion is a little thicker to help catch the sweat and prevent it from seeping. Have never had an issue (and I'm a 200-pound dude in Florida who sweats).

    I definitely have different styles. It’s usually based off the weather. I can shot in a suit in the summer. I look my best like if I’m a guest. So I can fit in with the crowd I stand out enough with the cameras and flashes.

    Had a wedding last week here in Sardinia and I was struggling. Temperatures are rapidly increasing above 30 degrees celsius. What to wear during a wedding here, especially during summer, it's a real challenge. You don't want to look trashy but also don't want to melt. It's really difficult to look cool and tidy while working in this climate condition

I don't do the all black thing..I wear a backwards Goorin Brothers drivers hat, a cool looking shirt, thin fabric pants and whatever shoes go with it..Sometimes, we don't get the memo when its going to be black tie..If you are going to be in the heat all day, take a second set of clothes to wear after ceremony, just before reception.

    Super video!! Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this subject. I often wonder again and again what to wear as weddings 😅
    I totally agree with your thought about dressing according to the wedding.
    My current go to is white dress shirt, with chinos or dress pants and a vest. On the feet, I like to have leather trainers or other confortable yet clean shoes.
    I'm moving more towards white shirts of late because it's a more common color for the wedding guests and I want to try to blend in as much as possible (which isn't easy with a camera...)
    Looking forward to your next video!

    I don’t necessarily like wearing all black but I’m usually pouring sweat in the first 5 minutes here in north Florida. I do have a light tan lululemon short sleeve button up that still hides sweat. In Florida at least light colors fit in. Even the highest end weddings here have a bit of a casual vibe. I’ve just started wearing Nike Huarache escapes and getting lots of compliments. 😂 I’ve never been so comfortable. Can’t go back. Cool intentional casual is the way for me. I actually think all black stands out most but it makes a Henley tshirt and my holdfast look a little more formal and intentional. Thanks for the suit suggestion because I need something for the occasional black tie. 👍🏻

    I'm an older guy, so the whole high-water pants w/no socks look doesn't appeal to me. I haven't done any real high profile weddings, so my usual outfit is a black pair of creased Dickies work pants, black t-shirt, and matching or contrasting photographers' vest (which distinguishes me from the help). If I need to dress it up a little I'll wear a white shirt & black tie instead of a t-shirt, or I'll wear a leisure suit (I have several colors) instead of the t-shirt & Dickies. I do however, like the idea of a traditional suit that you can toss in the washing machine - gonna look into that.

    • @jbivphotography
      @jbivphotography  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah having a suit that can easily be cleaned like this I think is perfect for wedding photographers. Also the nice thing is you don't have to have your ankles out either. You can choose the type of pants and the fit as well. I'm a huge fan.

    Hate to break it to you but that Sene jacket is not a suit, it's a travel blazer, designed to be more casual, lighter, and sportier. Good for backyard summer weddings or at a boat house wedding, but you'll want a proper suit at a formal church wedding. Those who know suits will take one look at the fabric and know immediately that it's informal. Looks nice and comfy though and great for business casual and less formal events. Great video as always!! I still can't rock a hold fast though. I also agree, all black slacks with a black shirt just makes me feel like the help. Even worse when I see photogs do the branded polo. Feels cheap to me. I don't mind all black if I can add a pop of color with a tie.

    I generally don't ever go full suit, but you got me looking at this now because damn that would be sharp. I'm usually in navy blue or dark purple dress shirt and chinos in grey or tan. Sleeves are usually rolled up. Either the black dress shoes or my brown leather Stetson Chukkas depending if its an indoor or outdoor venue.

    I agree it doesn't have to be all black, but you also have to be careful about what colors you're wearing that they're not casting color onto the bride's white dress when you are physically close to her (or a groom, if he's in a light colored outfit). I once was photographing a bride about to come down the aisle as her dad gave her a kiss on the cheek and the wedding planner was hiding behind her fixing her train. But the planner was wearing a hot pink blazer, so the edges of the bride's ivory dress had the cast of hot pink on it, even though I couldn't see the planner. So I try to stick to dark gray, dark blue/navy and black for that reason! But I spice things up wearing Dr. Martens with this kickass blue snake/skull/floral pattern, so guests notice me (and recognize me at future events) for those!

    A regular haircut might help you expand your client base. People will be looking at your shoes; wear more business appropriate shoes and socks. If you had a different barber, they might recommended a simple #1 or #2 after you finished college, and certainly now that your hairline is receding. I'm not trying to be hurtful, but you don't seem to see yourself as some others may see you.

      "fixing your hairline" isn't going to book more weddings. But thanks for the feedback.

      idk why everyone thinks you have to wear all black and that's the only option.
