Preach it brother... The best camera to take pictures is the one in my hands. I almost fell in that trap a few years ago, until I realized a lot of TH-camrs are either sponsored or getting paid way more than me or something else to get those latest greatest or switch systems. I'll stick with what I like and can afford to deliver great photos or videos. As always, great video.
I totally agree with everything you’ve said. At last someone who speaks honestly about gear and attitude towards getting the job done for the client. I’ve shot manual for 35 years, I use vintage lenses that require me to focus manually and I shoot single frames (quickly and deliberately). It works for me and my clients. I see no reason to shoot at 20fps, I’m not a sports shooter and I have no desire to sort through 20 images to just use one. I must admit, I have 35 years of photography behind me, I know what I need to shoot to get the job done. I understand that there are many newbies out there who don’t have that experience but I agree with you, you learn faster by being deliberate and choosing your moment, and not relying on your gear to do it for you.
Thanks for posting this message. I laugh when people come on TH-cam and say they are switching to s different brand of camara one year and the switch again to another brand a few months later. It's not fair on the novices who come to my shop where I sell cameras to return it because of what some stupid yutuber said.
Point #1 definitely. I do most of my people shots at f4. I only go f2. 8 when I start on the candid shots. Also I've just found the drag AF on the R5. This has revolutionised my focussing 😊
Nice! I’m the worst and shoot wide open all the time but I know this is the one tip that most people don’t talk about commonly. I feel like all I ever hear new photographers saying is “why are my photos not sharp”
In the early 2000's I watched a profile of a Sports Illustrated swimsuit photographer who shot with a DISPOSABLE camera. Granted, he had a lighting crew and assistants but photos from his disposable camera were published in the Swimsuit Edition. I remind myself of this anytime I obsess over gear.
You are right, however with myself I seem to be a bit unsteady with my hands and having eye autofocus really helps nail more shots. I have used a canon 5Dm4 which is a great camera but because it uses a focus point to track if I moved my hand to much I missed some shots, which were not tack sharp. With my new mirrorless camera I get fewer shots out of focus. I do like eye autofocus...

Hey John I hear ya, I'm still shooting the Fujifilm X-T1 and Canon 5D MkII, 6D, 7D. Haven't really had the need to upgrade. Oh! and by the way I shoot most of my clients on the X-T1.
Thank you John. A lot was said. Love it. I am still shooting with Nikon D 610 but I invested in good glass and learn my camera and lenses. The funny things is the customer doesn’t care what camera and lenses you use. All they care is how beautiful the pictures will be and sharpness. It’s up to the photographer to use his or her skills to make it happen. I belong to a photography group and when chatting with other photographers. All they talk about is the latest gear instead of how you got the shot and why you chose the settings. That’s when I excuse myself and walk away. Don’t want to hear about gear talk. Love to talk about lighting and composition and different angles.
The D610 is an underated camera. Few months ago, I didn't like it because of the "small viewfinder" compared to the one in the D800, max shutter speed of 1/4000s. But boy I was wrong. I choosed the D800 with 36MP and everything was slow : shooting, post-processing 36MP. Now I purchased a D610 and the pictures I got are amazing. This camera has the same dynamic range and image quality as the D800. The only difference is the MP count and it is in the right way because post-processing 24MP is really fast. Pair it with a good glass and you get amazing results
Great advice bro! I will always be working on number 03. I’m such a documentary photographer that I really prefer letting things unfold and shooting the beauty of the natural moment, *but* like you said I’ve learned how important it is to provide direction to the clients. In addition to what you said it really puts forth confidence because I’ve also been learning to be confident no matter what, because the client will pick up on that and be encouraged.
When there’s more than one person in the frame stop down. If you have a f1.4 lens, even going down to f2 or 2.8 is fine. If you have a f2.8 lens, stop down to f3.5 or f4. Just a little bit will do.
My first time I had no other choice but to shoot at f/4 because that's what I had, but I now actually prefer that 3.5 to 8 range as more of a documentary style shooter unless it's really that dark (sometimes I like the iso grain I'm black and white though). I learned a ton from watching you though. By the time I showed up, nobody but the crew I worked with could tell it was my first time lol.
I have no interest in shooting weddings professionally (currently I only shoot pin-up style), but I love your videos on the craft and professional aspects of photography. Keep it up dude! :)
Fantastic video 👌 I have the Fuji xt5, xt4, and sometimes I use my Fuji xh1 at events and when people see the photos afterwards they say wow these are beautiful photos and they comment that you must use the latest top camera!!! So it’s not about the latest gear but like John says you must know how to use your camera in all the settings for different environments and therefore my xh1 produces the same photos as my xt5
Agreed brother! Especially with the autofocus piece. I never use continuous autofocus for weddings or commercial work so I never understood all the autofocus talk. I do use continuous with family shots with my kiddo and quick snapshots, but if someone is paying you for your work, choose your focus point! Cheers brother!
EXACTLY! Also most styles of photography aren't even that fast that you need always on the eyes continous autofocus at all times. It starts becoming a bit much after awhile.

Hi! I just want to share my story: I started photography 3 years ago from zero. Since then now still worked full time as an engineer. My carrier is ok, I don't need money from photography (just time but that's what I do not get without quitting my only income.) So after the first year I started wedding photography and had 3, after the next year I had 4... This year is zero. (so long as no one has booked) I don't know what I did wrong, because my skill is improved, so much my skill above average full-time photographer. In mostly and mainly doing just portraits, with "models" (but not professional ), And asked people why they not want me as a photographer for casual portraits or weddings. One useful comment was that: Im too professional and my photos too good for them. And they want simpler photos that they see in my portfolio. Im thinking how can I separate these two sides? I don't know i want to make money of my skills, Now I'm over 2000 hours of photography ( shootings and edit) So i think i can.

If u have mirrorless u can shoot wide open with no issues. I used M50 since it came out and didn't miss focus that much. Now with r6 and r5 the autofocus is even better. Shooting wide open is not scarry anymore.
Single point, centre square aim for the face/eye, if it’s a woman you can normally aim for the boobs as they’re normally in line with the face so should be in focus too. Focus is in a plane. So anything along that plane should be in focus.
Yes nothing wrong with shooting auto... however, if you are saying you are a photographer but your asking what other people settings are, you're just a camera shooter... get off auto and UNDERSTAND YOUR SETTINGS. The stopping down I agree as well,. I've met so many people who are so afraid to shoot past wide open. Sometimes its good to have elements of the area in the shot, not all blown away with a subject looking like they are in the Matrix room.
Hiya John, If you aren't using continous focus, how you shot "March In" if they are doing indoor and the venue not allow flash? (I mean F2.8 ISO500 1/100 would be good, if I have to make sure "freeze" them when they are marching in, I may need 1/250, that mean I have to boost ISO to 800 or even 1000 to keep the same brightness)

i know u use fuji but i challenge u to tray the sony a7 2 and show me what u gonna do with focus :) the camera have a part of that job and great camera make the work easy not something else like make u a good photographer, but bro i still make good quality with a7 2 but she makes me angry sometimes because the AF ( sometimes i use MF when i actually buy a 85mm 1.4 or 35mm .14 )
I would still just use single point. I don't use it because my camera can't do continous auto focus. I use it because I don't like all of the big choices to be in the hands on my camera. I like to be the one actually telling the camera where to focus.

@@7lattt I am not famit with Sony's coz I have only used canons. So far M50 r5 and r6 no issues with focus when wide open. You miss here and there but most times you win even at 1/10 shutter you might win
John, I have a question for you, .I have a same sex wedding to shoot in August, I'm kind of nervous but I can handle it. Have you ever shot a same sex wedding and hiw does it differ?
I've done a couple. Honestly you kind of just pic who will be the anchor in the couple and then pose that way. Other than that it's the same. Generally the taller person is easier to be the anchor but you can also base it off of personality.
at this day and age. Clients wants more photos so you can't shoot less than a thousand. And I was wondering if they're going to print all that photos or post it on their social media and who will browse a thousand photos?
That's incorrect. I think many photographers have the perspective that clients want more photos but it's just not true. I've been delivering about the same amount of photos my whole career (about 10 years) and it's never been a problem. Also, shooting less is more about your approach and not about how many photos you deliver. That's kind of what I was getting at. You should have a sure fire process that gets you the same results every time so that you know you're getting exactly what you're going to deliver. Don't leave it in the hands of your clients, educate them on what you're going to provide and they "won't want more photos"
I have never understood this logic of 1000s of photos, what are they going to do with them all? Spending weekends showing them to family? In reality they just show and post their favourites. But there is a thinking more is better🤔. I have heard it from clients.
Fiddling around with an AF box? This doesn't guarantee great photos or makes someone a better photographer. The same with manual focusing. Why not use an external light meter?... Cameras with great AF performance and face/eye detection and tracking are a great support, making life so much easier. Free to concentrate on composition and lighting. Photography is not about "the art of focusing without assistance".
From my experience photographers rely on it TOO much resulting in missed shots. And them missing shots is more on the camera, not just them missing the shot. So instead of always "looking for the next best camera" because the one you're currently using "misses shots" I think it's more in the hands of the photographer to actually figure out the best approach so those shots don't get missed. So it's not that not using continous makes you better. But make sure that you're doing your due diligence to learn the camera and it's pros and cons rather than just comparing "which camera has the best autofocus". It's just a trap to always be upgrading.
I disagree with tip #2. You should shoot through the moments and so that means shoot the hell out of it. There’s always that perfect moment that will be caught by shooting more. Just ask Erika and Lanny from Two Mann Studios. 😂
I disagree. Shooting through that “moment” you can easily end up with probably 200 photos, just for that moment! Whereas you’re probably going to choose maybe 5 out of that if you’re lucky. Save yourself the hassle and shot wisely, and less! Lol 😅
Good points: But one that is questionable is pose the clients. A number of photographers actually advertise as a pro they don't pose and get "natural" shots, and a number of clients believe this, asking for, no editing and no posing, natural. I kinda think, why hire someone, just use your IPhone. A bad practice i have seen is photographers using zoom lenses, instead of changing a len or using their feet they get close and wide angle the lens, giving a pin cushion affect, making parts of the body distorted. Then thing they have a banger shot by giving the client big arms or big legs. As to AF, i do feel it is far more important with video, stills, just do what you suggested, move the focus point. And i would add the BIGGEST improvement to photos is lighting, on camera fill lighting and OCF. The best banger video and still shots have some sort of staged lighting.

That's the right answer. All cameras since 2012, even Canon 5D original from 2005 or Nikon D3/D700 from 2007/8 are amazing and can get the job done

I think you could make a full video on the first tip providing examples of when it is okay to stop down and when it is not.

lol. Exactly. How you're using the camera is much more important than the camera itself.
The only time I use face detect is when I want to swap orientation a lot during formals. Single point is just the most predictable for 98% of the time

That’s the only time during the day that I use continuous autofocus. Not face either just zone.

I've done a couple. Honestly you kind of just pic who will be the anchor in the couple and then pose that way. Other than that it's the same. Generally the taller person is easier to be the anchor but you can also base it off of personality.

at this day and age. Clients wants more photos so you can't shoot less than a thousand. And I was wondering if they're going to print all that photos or post it on their social media and who will browse a thousand photos?
That's incorrect. I think many photographers have the perspective that clients want more photos but it's just not true. I've been delivering about the same amount of photos my whole career (about 10 years) and it's never been a problem. Also, shooting less is more about your approach and not about how many photos you deliver. That's kind of what I was getting at. You should have a sure fire process that gets you the same results every time so that you know you're getting exactly what you're going to deliver. Don't leave it in the hands of your clients, educate them on what you're going to provide and they "won't want more photos"
I have never understood this logic of 1000s of photos, what are they going to do with them all? Spending weekends showing them to family? In reality they just show and post their favourites.
But there is a thinking more is better🤔. I have heard it from clients.
Fiddling around with an AF box? This doesn't guarantee great photos or makes someone a better photographer. The same with manual focusing. Why not use an external light meter?... Cameras with great AF performance and face/eye detection and tracking are a great support, making life so much easier. Free to concentrate on composition and lighting. Photography is not about "the art of focusing without assistance".
From my experience photographers rely on it TOO much resulting in missed shots. And them missing shots is more on the camera, not just them missing the shot. So instead of always "looking for the next best camera" because the one you're currently using "misses shots" I think it's more in the hands of the photographer to actually figure out the best approach so those shots don't get missed. So it's not that not using continous makes you better. But make sure that you're doing your due diligence to learn the camera and it's pros and cons rather than just comparing "which camera has the best autofocus". It's just a trap to always be upgrading.

I disagree with tip #2. You should shoot through the moments and so that means shoot the hell out of it. There’s always that perfect moment that will be caught by shooting more. Just ask Erika and Lanny from Two Mann Studios. 😂

I disagree. Shooting through that “moment” you can easily end up with probably 200 photos, just for that moment!
Whereas you’re probably going to choose maybe 5 out of that if you’re lucky. Save yourself the hassle and shot wisely, and less! Lol 😅

But one that is questionable is pose the clients. A number of photographers actually advertise as a pro they don't pose and get "natural" shots, and a number of clients believe this, asking for, no editing and no posing, natural. I kinda think, why hire someone, just use your IPhone.
A bad practice i have seen is photographers using zoom lenses, instead of changing a len or using their feet they get close and wide angle the lens, giving a pin cushion affect, making parts of the body distorted. Then thing they have a banger shot by giving the client big arms or big legs.
As to AF, i do feel it is far more important with video, stills, just do what you suggested, move the focus point.
And i would add the BIGGEST improvement to photos is lighting, on camera fill lighting and OCF. The best banger video and still shots have some sort of staged lighting.
