Pokémon Stadium 2 Shiny Hunting: Explained - Tama Hiroka

  • Tama teams up with Feanen to figure out how shiny Pokemon colors are determined in Pokémon Stadium 2, and how we can use this information to get lots of easy shinies! Gen 2 shiny hunting was way easier than modern games like Pokemon Go or Pokemon Sword and Shield. If you have a copy of Gold Silver or Crystal ready, let's dive in.

    Do you also like video games a normal amount? Maybe you want the shirt I'm wearing in today's video? Fear not my friends, I have it covered: teespring.com/i-like-video-games-a-normal-am 👀
    I have been implored to add a correction to this video. Early on, I say that gift Pokemon have DV's that are set to a certain range and are more likely to be shiny. The reason I believed this was that in my own now 999 hour play through, every single gift Pokemon in the game was shiny within an hour of resets, whereas non-gift event Pokemon on the over world would consistently take months of resets. I assumed that this pattern was too consistent to be a coincidence, and that perhaps it gift Pokemon in Crystal worked the same way as the Odd Egg or something. There's also plenty about these games that has yet to be well documented so I figured maybe this was just one of those things. Well I have been told now that this is not likely to be true. So I'm just posting this to clear up any confusion and explain why I said what I said. I never intentionally set out to spread misinformation but as I mentioned in the video itself I am occasionally an ignoramus and am just wrong about things.

      Thank you for making the correction! However, just one thing:
      "There's also plenty about these games that has yet to be well documented so I figured maybe this was just one of those things."
      While this is true for Stadium 2, in case you didn't know, Gold + Silver as well as Crystal (all main series Gen 1 and Gen 3 games as well) have complete disassemblies available online. It's safe to say people can at least figure out everything they need to about these games by look through their respective files, and is why it's safe to say that if gift Pokemon had higher odds of being shiny, it would have been widespread news by now.

    • @Tama-Hero
      @Tama-Hero  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@kajpor9937 These things might be known, but are they easily searchable? Is this information included in a well known hub like Bulbapedia or Serebii? I had someone in the comments explain that they had to do their own research to figure out how telephone gifting in Crystal worked not that long ago. There's stuff that people might know in discords or boards but the information isn't accessible somewhere that everyone can access. There's also stuff about FRLG I learned just a few weeks ago that is also widely mis-reported/not accessible. Stuff for older games is often not updated in the typical places you might find information about Pokemon games, old walkthroughs from 15 years ago are missing information, most of the stuff on Serebii hasn't been touched in a long time for Gen 2, Bulbapedia is good for a basic overview a lot of the time but the details aren't there. I disagree that all things that are known about older games is widespread. People just don't update info for older games that much.

    It really makes me want Stadium and stadium 2 released on the Switch’s virtual console with wireless compatibility with the Pokémon VC games. I feel like it would have made these more hidden methods of shiny hunting more accessible to more players as well as providing an avenue to send those shinies to your modern games. Without the stadium titles, the Gen 1 and 2 experiences feel incomplete

    • @Deoxys911
      @Deoxys911 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I never realized that the Dodrio mode made the game play in grayscale, so thankfully now I don't feel quite as disappointed that I couldn't cut all those hours spent Shiny hunting in Crystal down significantly since I wouldn't have been able to see that I had hatched a Shiny right away had I been using that mode. Now I just generally wish Nintendo would let us choose to play downloads of their classic games at two or three times speed as a standard option!

    When the Pokemon games were released on the Virtual Console on the 3DS I hoped that they would release Pokémon Stadium 1 and 2 respectively alongside them; even on the 3DS to easily connect with the games on your system. I think it would of been great as the Stadium games are great companions to the Gameboy games especially with the specific things you can do in Stadium One and Two. Your videos made me want to go back and play them on their original hardware to experience them. As a kid I nicknamed my Pokémon and seeing different colors had me puzzled but it was cool to learn why. Anyways I’ve said a lot but thanks for posting these vids it’s been great watching them and feeling like a kid again playing Red and Crystal!

    You know, it's funny that they never brought back the hue system since it was pretty clearly made to make your Pokémon feel like an individual. You'd think they'd want to have that feature return, especially after introducing mechanics like Amie, which were aimed specifically at building a bond with your individual Pokémon.

    • @electrocast
      @electrocast 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      it confused so many people that knew about shinies though. check out modern playthroughs of the stadium games, especially by people that are unfamiliar with it, they ALWAYS say "hey wait is that a shiny?" to weirdly-coloured nicknamed mons used by the AI. i do love the personalisation it brings though & always wished they found a suitable visual replacement for it, like the dressup for your partner in let's go, but i guess i'll have to wait for years before gf realises i want a cane and top hat for my fancy old dragonite

    • @CinemaBizarreShinya
      @CinemaBizarreShinya 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@electrocast I think they just overdid the hues, but it wouldn't be too crazy to establish the idea of different shades of Pokemon. I'd really love that, but it would make some Shinies even more indistinguishable than they already are (like Gengar).
      But some Accesories wouldn't be too bad either. But seeing gf go from Stadium to Pokemon Amie to Pokemon Camp let's me doubt that they really want people to bond with their Pokemon.

    • @electrocast
      @electrocast 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@CinemaBizarreShinya gf wasn't behind the stadium games. there's totally different code going on in there. the real progression is from following mons to amie to camp. they do care, they are just trickling in these kind of features supremely slowly [which is a fair criticism as i hate this about them myself]. but i think it's important to understand why they trickle in features instead of blowing us away in one game, and i think a large part of it is for series longevity. i don't agree with it in any way, but there's a lot going on that makes it a more complicated & nuanced issue than it seems.

    Loving this sudden influx of videos lately. Especially the ones that tackle non-Pokémon stuff. That’s been a nice change of pace.
    Speaking of, any plans to tackle Chao raising from the Sonic Adventure games again?

    This is epic. I’m breeding shiny Porygon and Larvitar eggs(saving so i can simply unhatch the shinies) in silver for my crystal cart (sadly not my original crystal cart due to a botched save battery replacement) and when you said that gift Pokémon like Chikorita and Eevee have boosted odds made my day. I already have the Porygon egg(i have so many shiny Porygon over the years and it never gets old) and im 47 eggs into the Larvitar hunt. Im hoping to use my crystal team to carry me through the round 2 pokecup ultra and master ball tourneys and figure out something with the little cup round 2 to finish my stadium 2 game and get Dodrio tower round 2

    Very interesting!! I still use pokemon stadium 2's PC, and I am mind-blown that it is possible to streamline the shiny hunting process! Also the name changing guide is something that I've been hoping for, for years. Thank you

    Gen 2 shiny hunting is definitely interesting. I eventually hatched a shiny Eevee in Crystal, passing down the "shiny gene" from the Red Gyarados to an Ekans, and then to an Eevee. Getting a "shiny gene" female Eevee was a little time consuming, but from there, it did not take me too long to get a shiny Eevee. Since this was on Virtual Console, I eventually transferred my shiny Eevee (as an Espeon) to Gen 7, but I waited to evolve it into Espeon prior to transfer, so that I could teach my shiny Espeon the Gen 2 exclusive move Zap Cannon.
    I named my shiny Espeon Anabel, after the trainer that used a Zap Cannon Espeon in the Gen 3 anime (which was an illegal move in the games at that time, as Gen 2 Pokémon cannot transfer to Gen 3). Anabel also has a role in the original Sun & Moon games, but less so in USUM.

    I've been lucky enough to have encountered several shinies over the years without ever hunting for one. But this video has me kind of inspired to try it. I have all the hardware necessary for this, and Gen 2 is one of my favorite gens. Thanks for the very informative video!

    Well for people who don't have the gameboy color and n64 games but have gen 2 games on your 3ds, you can still have a complete gen 2 experience!
    You can export the save with JKSV, convert it to a gameboy save (there are plenty of videos on youtube for this) and play pokemon stadium 2 with it on project 64. As for the dodrio gameboy (which doesn't work properly on project 64), you can play on visual boy advance and set the throttle at 300%.
    Of course, you can then reconvert the savefile to 3ds virtual console and play again on your 3ds whenever you like.

    This video spoke to me on a personal level. Not just because it was interesting, but because I can relate to it a lot. It seems I'm always trying to find more info about a specific thing I noticed or learned in a game (usually info that no one else cares about). A couple stories that stick out for me are...
    Just today actually I was searching for a video that talked in-depth about the differences between the NES and Arcade versions of Gradius. I remembered this great video about it but couldn't find it on YT, so I had to find a link to it from another site. But then it turned out to be privated, so I went to the Wayback Machine...and found several instances of the video...but the video wouldn't play on any of them. But since I found the TH-camr's channel, I was able to find his Discord server (which was lucky that he had, as he's a small TH-camr). I messaged an admin of the server who said he'd pass my concerns to him, and now I'm waiting.
    A major one which bugged me for years was trying to find information about this mode in Super Smash Bros. Brawl that gives you a list of various Nintendo games. The problem was that the list has differences across each region, and I only have access to the NTSC version. Smashwiki had all the info in the NTSC version of course (which I already had), but had incomplete info about the PAL version, and absolutely nothing about the Japanese version. I was able to find the Japanese version by searching in Japanese and going on a random website. I also was able to verify that the info was at least a little accurate by finding an obscure YT video, which featured game footage for a little bit of the info I needed for like 5 seconds. I found a similar list for the PAL version on a Spanish website, but I couldn't find anything to prove it, aside from a single image on the website which gave me a tiny bit of confirmation, but not enough.
    I looked far and wide for the Japan and PAL ROMS of the game, but there were none on the internet it seemed like, even when searching on non-English sites. I was considering modding my Wii and buying the different region copies of the game. I even tried torrenting for the first and only time in my life to find it. After that bad experience, I found a video that a guy made a couple months prior that talked about the info I needed. After that, I checked the wiki, and the whole page had been fully updated with the information! Now, I can finally rest with my useless knowledge.
    I know this was kind of a tangent, but I just wanted to give my personal tale on this. I doubt you'll see this Tama, but I figured you'd be able to relate to my experiences. Either way, I really liked the video, and I've really loved the content you've put out this year. I've been watching you since late 2012-mid 2013, and I think your new stuff is probably your best yet (though I still miss your old Pikachu hoodie sprite :P)! I'm not usually one for videos that are more on the personal side than objective, but your videos have always been the exception. I hope you continue to make great videos for years to come. Best of luck! ^_^

    You don't know how long I've waited for a video like this...thank you. :) Count me as #3 in that count BTW. I...never realized that either, despite probably hatching like at least 15 Shinies from Crystal...
    Also, would you mind elaborating on why/how the starters and gift 'mons have a higher Shiny chance? I can't find any guides that mention anything like that, and just regurgitate the same basic info...
