Thank you for covering mods, even if they aren't your favorite. These kinds of videos are vital for the informed consumer, and save us all a lot of money and heartache.
A lot of people thinks that this kit have no shimmering effect unlike the other kits on the market but this is only because the image is larger than the viewing window exactly like if you use any other kit with the horizontal zoom. Anyway, great video as always Tito ! Congrats for the growth of your channel 🙂.
Glad you have all of these videos because I’m in the market to finally get a Game Gear and I’m planning to try and install an aftermarket screen and you’ve covered them all in-depth.
Very entertaining videos as always! Hopefully you saved some people the pain of trying to acquire and install one of these kits. The good thing is if they're crazy enough to do it, you got them covered with this tutorial.
I would be interested in seeing a game gear rechargable battery mod. Game gear is such a battery guzzler and would benefit greatly from a rechargable battery mod.
Oh man, hot glue the screen in place? Really makes you appreciate all the fine folks coming up with the 3D printed brackets so you can just drop the screen in.
I love the image quality so much with this one. I dislike the more unevenly scaled screen mods because I absolutely cannot stand scrolling shimmer. That said overall I don't think it's worth it anyways with how much you lose in terms of options. If this very slightly filtered (to stop uneven-looking scaling and scrolling shimmer) option were on the other screen mods they would be perfect.
Great informative vid! I was hoping this one would've had better integer-like scaling but it's almost... as close as it gets. Maybe someone someday will create one.
My friend and I both believe that he should also let everyone know what tools are needed for the work instead of telling everyone what tool he is using at the time so the people who are doing the mod or whatever else he may be doing so the tools and whatever else is needed can be got before the work begins.
I'm glad you try and review a kit like this, even if you ultimately find more cons than pros. While it's more likely that most of us viewers are in the States (I'm in New York, for example), bringing attention to a kit like this would almost certainly benefit Japanese viewers who would be interested in such, may have fewer viable alternatives, and be able to get it with less hassle.
Thanks Tito! The quality of the video looks great on the screen, but it is a shame that the case would need to be trimmed to fit the image. Thanks for doing this video! I would love it if you did a quarterly update on all the screen mods for all handhelds and which ones are your recommendation. Nothing worse than looking at a older video an missing out on a newer better mod.
It speaks to the vibrancy of the mod scene that this is just about the first one you've covered that I can recall that was such a resounding "meh". Thanks for covering the underwhelming side of things too!
They single one video mode is a definate pro for me. Because with this integer scale you have the perfect ratio and can cut the shell fitting the image. This can't be done with any other kit because you would have to cycle through all video modes since all other kits don't remember the last video mode. This one is a winner if you ask me, if you cut the shell properly. It would be a dream if retrosix would make custom shells for this integer scale mode. According to the brackets: For most of the kits the brackets were made "aftermarket". So why shouldn't it be possible here. Actually it's pretty easy to adopt sind the other brackets utilize screens of the same size. But the price is sadly a no-go. If the other kits would implement a save feature for the last mode used it would be a nice.
Thank you for doing video on this. I didn't know this existed. Lol. Currently I have a mcwill modded screen with video out. I'm just waiting for a screen with correct scaling and video out

I make fun of it but it's an important handheld, and I loved playing back in the day. It was always special when I got to play one. Love this niche mod!

@@apollolux yeah I know that much, but there's parts in the video where you see the game Boy for example flipping on its side and then start rotating unless it's a freaking optical illusion lol

I wish that filter option was on other available GG mods, also I noticed under the 2ASIC pads there's pads labeled MODE, Any idea what those are for? Maybe they change the screen size?
Awesome video. It's great seeing these retro consoles still receiving love all these years later. I'm still putting my own custom GBA together and wondered if I could ask some advice? What IPS screen and flash cart would you recommend?
Krikzz makes great flash carts and so are the EZ flash ones. Most of the IPs kits in the market are great in my opinion. Can’t go wrong with FunnyPlaying.
@@MachoNachoProductions Cheers dude, brought myself a FunnyPlaying IPS V2 and a soldering kit. I haven't soldered anything since I was at school, so that'll be interesting! lol Think I'm gonna get some practice in on some old PS2/PS3 pads I got laying about first. The one thing about Kaden no Ken-chan is that he's just a guy that gets other hobby self made electronics. He has one spot inside the radio-kan in Akiba, and only opens weekends because of the... world situation.
@@MachoNachoProductions I did hear that there were typical backlight mods for the VMU, too. Sort of similar to the old-style mods for Game Boy + Pocket. The best thing about them is that they're active while you have it in the Dreamcast controller, so you can actually see the display even in the dark, which helps so much for Dreamcast games which have heavy VMU screen usage.
Interesting that the kit is so lacking. I ordered the RGBDRV for the Sega Nomad from the same company and it can utilize a clickwheel to access various settings and options like brightness.
Still waiting for the holy grail of GG LCD mods - an LCD panel that can display an image close to the size of the viewport but with integer scaling. I'm convinced it will come some day. Until then I'm sticking with my McWills mod.
Thanks for the review on this mod. It is good to know there is another option out there but I don't think I would go this route. The general problems with this one just make it seem not worth it.
I'm here looking at this alternative and still don't have any of my Game Gears functional. It looks like one I would try because the board screams for an RGB out mod.
Nice mod! but I hope you talk about the new EZ flash omega Definitive edition and compare because I just modded an SP and I'm in the market for a flashcart now
The Game Gear. Such a pain to mod no matter which option you go with lol. Still, I know now not to look into this particular screen, so thanks for the video!
Word of caution from hard experience - hot glue can be hot enough to cause thermal shock to an LCD - I had a GBA backlit LCD shatter from the hot glue once, lol. Make sure you're using your hot glue gun on a low setting, and try not to glob too much onto the LCD.
I feel like at this point we have so many good replacements for the Game Gear. I really hope someone is developing an IPS replacement for the Nomad. The current composite and RGB mods while much better than factory, leave a lot to be desired.
Would love it if someone tackled the nomad. I’m afraid that since it’s a somewhat rare console it would have to be a passion project since not too many will sell.
The Nomad apparently sold a million units surprisingly making it not as rare as it could be. I think it must have sold much less units because it seems hard to find.

I actually don't mind screen mods that don't have multiple screen size selections. As long as it's very close to the native size of the original display and is integer scaled. But when its cutting off a significant portion of the screen, its a problem.
@@MachoNachoProductions fantastic..... I'm there! Loving the vids, keep up the great work Tito. Can't believe you don't have more subs. This is easy a triple digit sub channel, minimum.
