  • THE SEGA NOMAD HAS A BATTERY PROBLEM. LASER BEAR INDUSTRIES FIXED IT!
    In today’s episode of Retro Renew, I take a look at Laser Bear Industries’ very cool Lithium Ion Battery Pack for the Sega Nomad handheld console! This is a fantastic option for those who have a Nomad but don’t have a battery as many of the originals no longer hold a charge, or in the case of the 6AA battery pack, are very expensive. Additionally the modern Lithium Ion Pack from Laser Bear boasts 2 18650 cells that provide fantastic battery life and a modern battery management system. Additionally, I ran a battery test to see how much gameplay this Pack can provide on a single charge, and I think you will not be disappointed. So let’s see if this is a battery mod worth of your beloved Sega Nomad!

    As a direct replacement, this is awesome. However, from a modder’s standpoint, I would love to see a USB C variant available, so that it can be charged on the same cable as my gameboy advance sp and iPod video lol. We are nearing completion on the USB C takeover!

      That and flip the battery door so it has to slide up instead of down. That will take away the need for a lock and prevent it from sliding down during gameplay.

    • @SmallSpoonBrigade
      @SmallSpoonBrigade 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@Binary_Omlet I'm glad I'm not the only one that noticed that. I'm not sure why they decided to put it in upside down, I don't see any clearance issues in the design that would require that. I doubt that people are going to be opening and closing it frequently enough for it to be an issue, but still.

    • @drcarrot415
      @drcarrot415 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Binary_Omlet or a screw on battery cover would be the best IMO, as I don’t think I would ever be swapping around those types of cells, as carrying those unprotected can potentially be dangerous as seen with older vape devices that used those. But I can certainly agree that something needs done about the battery door

    • @MrRobarino
      @MrRobarino 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Binary_Omlet The locking tab has nothing to do with the direction of the battery door. The lock is to prevent the entire battery pack from falling off the back of the Nomad. It's designed exactly the same way as an original Sega Nomad battery pack. If you didn't know that, then you've never owned a Sega Nomad and you're in no position to talk.
      As for the door itself, what's the issue? You install the batteries, slide the door close and you're done. It does not slides down on its own nor do you need to open it up again. There's nothing wrong with the battery door. You people are just creating problems that don't really exist.

    My parents bought me the Nomad brand new in 1996 for my birthday. I used to use a GameGear rechargeable battery pack with mine by holding the pack backwards and keeping the plug in the top. I never had the Nomad rechargeable pack.

    This should go along with a modern screen replacement (that greatly reduces the power requirement of the system to begin with). The original Nomad screen is headache inducing and pretty much impossible to look at today. Back when it was made it was pretty much the best available, but nowadays it is just bad.

  • @UnrivaledPiercer
    @UnrivaledPiercer 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I agree that a charge LED would have been a nice addition. Something else that's hugely missed I think is a USB-C charge option. Not everyone has an original adapter so having a modern way to charge via USB-C would have been a nice option. Lastly, either a plastic clip to hold the door, or invert the print for the door to have it slide up instead of down would have helped. Overall definitely a nice thing to see older consoles like this getting some attention and preservation. Hopefully things like this continue with more custom parts in the future.

    I got my Unmodded Sega Nomad back in 2017 with the battery pack and thank god the battery pack came with it. I would say when I used Duracell batteries with it when I got it it lasted around a little under 4 hours. I mainly use Eneloops with my nomad now and they last about 4 hours before the batteries have to be charged but if you have another pair of Eneloops you can just swap them for more play time and charge the other batteries. I would only recommend using Eneloops with the Nomad if you already have the battery pack. If not the Laser Bear option is probably better to spend your money on and is probably a better solution overall for the Nomad but I do still recommend Eneloops if you have other devices that take AAs. I should try getting one of these myself to see how long my Nomad would last since mine is unmodified. The reason you got around 7 hours and 30 minutes could be because of the screen replacement since composite screen replacments tend to give you better battery life. I'm not sure how the battery life is affected by rgb screen mods like the lcddrive or rgbdrive which the lcddrive would probably be the mod I would get done on my nomad since I like the sharp image they give off.

    Still blows my mind that Sega made a portable Genesis 😆 good stuff as always man. The install looks very beginner-friendly!

    An indicator light can be added. I purchased the same management board that's in this mod. I put that management board in my old rechargeable Nomad battery pack. I used the LED and resistor on the original charging board. You run negative from B- on the management board to the resistor (I forget the value). Then, add resistor to negative on LED. Then use the incoming 10v to positive on the LED. The circuit for the light will complete everytime the battery is charging, then cut off when it's not.

    This is really neat. I fortunately have the original battery pack in my Nomad that I've had since I was a kid. The connection points in the original are also spring-loaded, but the shape of them isn't quite the same as this new battery pack mod. Even though I have the original, I think I might get this because the 7 hours you get with this versus the variable 2-4 hours I get with Eneloop AAs is way better. Another great video, dude!

    It's definitely great for what it is, being a replacement for the stock Nomad power bank, I just wonder why more designers aren't trying to tackle battery mods for both the Nomad and Gamegear that fit inside the AA battery compartment. I get that they both use unusual voltages for handhelds, but I doubt that makes it impossible. I've seen internal battery mods for the GG, but they're all DIY projects.
    Just feel like having a massive power wart ON the system is such an inelegant solution.

    The Game Gear blew my mind in the 90s. I think if I had learned about the Nomad back then, I wouldn't have survived the process of knowing that it existed.
    Anyway this made me day dream: Imagine being a kid on a road trip in a big SUV or van, and you and a sibling each have one of these and could plug them into the car. Did these have 2 play connectivity? Oh man...
    Growing up I had an NES and a GameBoy, and those were both great for me, but the Nomad is something else man.

    great video. I found some old forums and followed instructions to mount a sony handheld camcorder bttery to the nomad. it's very similar to this, but it mods the original nomad battery pack instead of 3d printing one...this was way back , it runs for a few hours with a modded aftermarket lcd screen as well.
    I think this product you reviewed here is a cleaner " friendlier", but a bit more expensive approach.

Like, yeah, injection molded plastic would probably be neat, but I don't think the cost for specialized tooling would be warranted for a console deemed a "commercial failure". Ok so I got this for my nomad an advice if you dont want to build and dont have the patient buy one pre built. Ok so it may seem very easy witch it is but since is 3d printed some of the parts dont fit well and its hard to fit it in. I found myself sanding down most of the smaller parts with drimmel in the low setting, to make them fit in. Ok everyhing is done now to put the back plate and screw on, yes! finally after a couple of hours I finally was able to put it on my nomad. Sweet it works now to charge and enjoy. It may look easy but because it is 3d printed the smaller parts are a bit of a headache but at the end it is well worth it. So yeah go for the pre built one.

    There’s nothing odd about the fact it (Nomad) was only sold in North America. This is where the Genesis platform sold the most.

    You might say this is the grand pappy of the Nintendo Switch as you could connect the Nomad to a TV via a video cable and it also had a input for an addition controller so that two could play either at home on the TV or on the go. Would have been great for road trips. Going to have to go dig mine out of the closet and see if it suffered from the dreaded Sega capacitor plague.

      The size and battery life/issues prevented it from being practically portable, and only about 1 million were sold

    Also ordered the battery pack a when they first came out. After a run through of several bad prints, and extremely tight fitting parts, I finally gave up after no email response. Great idea, but I guess my run was the beta test. Now I just have two 3500 mah batteries laying around.

    I was going to purchase this, but the warning on the site kinda scared me! Is there anyone that can explain a scenario where a 5v lcd mod would affect the power rails? I'm weary because Nomads are so expensive! Thanks anyone who can answer this! Mine was modified for 5volts. The diode on the LCD driver was removed and it was wired for 5v from the VCC to the regulator input.

    That is great but now we just need a battery pack for the Sega Game Gear. I know it has the 6 AA batteries but they had the external battery pack that went on back. It would be good for someone if they went on vacation with their Game Gear and forgot extra batteries.

    The battery cover wouldn't be an issue if it slid in from the top. Perhaps this can be done in a v2 of the item. A shame it;s out of stock, would dig this for my Nomad. If only there were an IPS screen for it!

    Funny this video drops. I was just complaining last night about the battery life of my own NOMAD. The NOMAD has pretty heavy mods however -- I wonder how long one of these guys will last.
    I'll pick up a kit! Appreciate the video! Also, the original battery pack does not come with pogo "pins" per say -- they are more like half circle metal discs that are spring loaded. 👀

    I would expect lithium batteries to last longer, if only because alkaline batteries aren't able to handle high power draw situations. For those unaware, drawing more power from alkaline batteries causes a disproportionately greater reduction in battery life. Like any portable gaming system, lithium is the way to go.
