    I was at this game. Kenley walked slower than a 90-yr old man from center field bullpen to the mound. If he half-ass jogged or even brisk-walked, I'm sure the ump would've let him complete his pitch warmup, but his absurdly slow walk from center field was noticeably ridiculous and ate up all his warmup time.

    The ump missing a pitch and then making up for it by giving the pitcher a strike on a close call is The Game Within The Game. The pitcher knows, the catcher knows, and so does the batter and both skippers. No discussion or arguing and the whole thing is totally unspoken. Baseball's GWTG is really great sometimes.

    • @donjones4719
      @donjones4719 2 ปีที่แล้ว +62

      Good observation. Also, afaik Bill Miller is the president of the umpires' union. He can see the problem of two rules that clash. I think enforcing the rule and calmly letting it play out - and take a lot of time - is his way of making a statement about it. Quietly saying something loudly. A different aspect of the GWTG. Then he gave the pitcher a close-enough strike.
      Listen up, MLB! Bill spoke loudly enough. Fix this on an emergency basis.

      Weird you'd put it on Manfred....You do know that the players association agrees to rule changes right? I mean Manfred is far from perfect.....but it isn't as if these rule changes come out of no where....How bout a little of that criticism for a whiny, pampered pro athlete that 'didn't get to stick to HIS routine'.....Because I guarantee that if the shoe was on the other foot, not only Jansen, but the Braves manager would be all for the same thing happening to their opponent.
      Bottom line is that you can't 'vote' for rule changes ( which is what players do with their reps in the players association) but bitch about those rules being applied to you even though you know damn well you (and your organization) would love (and support) the same scenario to be imposed upon your opponents.

      @@Benjamin-1776- the ball the pitchers use to warm up is not the same ball for live play. Unlike little league, MLB goes through more than 100 balls a game. anything that hits the dirt, any foul ball, slight contact, etc they swap balls. The check is to check the equipment (hat, wrists, arms, belt, etc) for anything illegal
      and getting a W is well worth a 4-5 game suspension, especially for the closer who might see 1 or 2 of those games max

      Sort of dumb rule, I get why it exists but it's too open-ended and can lead to situations like this where the pitcher is robbed of time by the glove check. Are they going to start calling hitters out on time after checking their bats?

    • @BoomerKeith1
      @BoomerKeith1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The plate ump is supposed to be deliberate when checking the closer so that the closer can get his warm up pitches in, and in just about every case this season there hasn't been an issue. The plate ump took his time which set back the closer and his routine. If the plate ump would have done his part and moved the closer along none of this would have happened. This is on the plate ump for taking his time.

    Nice to see this resolved in an adult manner, without a ton of f-bombs or theatrics. Both sides have valid points. MLB needs to fix the clock thing if the umps are going to check the incoming pitcher for foreign substances. Jansen needs to do more than saunter in from the bullpen next game. But, that they discussed it after the 3rd out calmly was encouraging.

    • @JS-nr7te

      bro 1 more pitch would have taken a fraction of the time of all this drama. initially telling him no more, pitcher umpire arguing, snit comes out and argues, blocks plate meeting on the mound... all of this compared to one pitch and the throwing it around the diamond. would have taken 15 seconds at most

    • @alexn78666
      @alexn78666 2 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      @@JS-nr7te True, and at the same time, rules are rules. If the ump makes an exception this time, it's more likely to happen again, then again, and before long it becomes normal to disregard the clock/rule and now every pitcher is expecting to be allowed an extra pitch, maybe two from this ump. You think the pitchers would take responsibility for that? Nah, that would be on the ump, he would be the one in trouble if MLB decided to fine somebody.
      It's a dumb rule, but the umps aren't there to decide which rules to enforce. MLB needs to fix it.

    What you missed is that it took Kenley a really long time to get from the bullpen to the mound. After the top of the 9th was over he stayed in the bullpen and kept throwing a few more pitches. Then he walked really slowly to the mound. By the time he got to the mound he had wasted a lot of time. He needs to get to the mound quicker and this could all be avoided. These are the pace of play rules that the union agreed to. This is not umpire Bill Miller's fault. This is Kenley's. He needs to get to the mound quicker.

      Been watching baseball since 1987. I don't like a lot of the new rules, but let's not pretend that player routines haven't created all this dead time during a game. Normally, late game situtions with runners on base are supposed to be the most tense and dramatic, but the combination of relief pitchers holding onto the ball for extended periods and batters stepping out of the box have killed the pace of the action. Players have gone unpoliced for decades and the result has been slower and slower games.

    The rigid enforcement of this rule actually caused the time between innings to be extended well beyond what simply allowing Jansen to take the one more pitch would have. When Bill Miller was insistent that Jansen was not going to get that one more warmup pitch, Jansen ambled in from the mound, then Snitker came out of the dugout to take up for his player. It would be interesting to see if anyone has a clock on what the real amount of time was between the third out of the top of the ninth inning and the first pitch of the bottom of the ninth inning.
