I've done this method a few times; it works really well! One recommendation: when you are removing the paper, while watching your favorite program, be sure to have a pair of tweezers handy to get a few of those little itty bitty pieces of paper that are caught under your quilting stitches. Great vid! Many thanks! And, Merry Christmas to all. 🎄
I just wanted to thank you sooooo much for this tutorial! I'm still new to quilting and didn't know about using quilting paper. I'm working on a project that is really large, 90x100 inches. The quilt design is bubbles, the fabric goes from light to dark colors as I move along. I had to keep drawing the circles u sing two different marking pens because of the color switches. Now, I simply draw the circles on the paper and quilt away. This has made it so much easier and faster to do! THANK YOU!!!!
I realize this video was made many years ago, but I wanted to say thank you thank you for such a awesome video tutorial. I am not good at free motion quilting and I think this is exactly what I needed. You have taught me so much so many little tricks in this short time. I wonder if your books are still available. I will check it out since you have helped me so much!
Very clear explanation of using the paper for quilting. I just did this for the first time on my last quilt and it worked well. I used a pair of tweezers to get the tiny bits of paper out when the rubbing didn't get it all. That worked well.
Why not use Quilting Made Easy paper, the pattern is already printed on the paper and it has adhesive on the back edges so you don't have to use pins. There are free motion patterns and border patterns where you just follow the line. I have been using their patterns for years and love them.
I traced my patterns in a large edge to edge strip. What a disaster!!! After I finished quilting, removing the paper I felt like I had plucked 20 geese! All of the tiny paper pieces everywhere~ Never again!!! Although your method looks easy, in the long run, still have a big mess to clean up!
This is the best video for teaching the quilting for beginners that I have watched today. Wow, This really took the fright out of it for me, I am going to try to work with your videos to learn with, Thank you so much. God bless.
I've never been brave enough to try machine quilting except for straight lines. I can't believe I never thought of practicing with no thread! Also, I'd love to know where you got your table. I've been looking for something like that. Thank you so much!
Today is June 1,2018 … would you give an example if you Are NOT doing blocks. I make a lot of quilt tops that I'm using long strips of fabric. Thank you and I enjoyed this video very much.
I have subscribed to this TH-cam channel now, as Lynn Witzenburg is a wonderful 'explain-er'! WRT removing the quilt paper, I would think something like a clean white eraser (Staedler) would be safer to use to remove the little bits under the stitching, rather than a sharp pair of scissors which could scratch a stitch apart, or heaven forbid, mar the fabric of the quilt. Just being cautious, after all that hard work making the quilt and stitching on the quilting design! Thanks for a terrific video, I will look at the entire series now! ~Diana from Toronto, Canada
Hello my name is Vickie, I've been sewing for over 40 years. My question is free motion quilting, I can't seam to control the fabric as it goes through the machine. Can you tell me what I'm doing wrong?
Why not try using ? "Wash-Away Applique" in stead of paper? It costs more than paper, but you can toss it in the wash or just soak it, and it totally dissolves. No mindless picking at leftover paper means more time to have fun quilting!
Hello, today is Feb 21, 2018 ... could you just take the master copy of the stencil and just make copies on your computer (word documents)? I think that would be faster but I haven't even done 1 of my quilt tops yet on my domestic sewing machine. I have taking them to a quilter, but I would like to do the smaller quilts myself and save some money. Thank you and did enjoy this video.
I wanted to thank you for this whole series, excellent presentation, explanation and content. I really learned so much in your quality video series. Thank you so much....excellent!
My machine will not sew without thread on top and there isn't any way to shut off that function, however, if I put a credit card where the thread would be on the side of my machine, it tricks the machine into working!
would this work using water soluble embroidery stabilizer? This tracing paper is not readily available to me but my mother has plenty of stabilizer that she claims is "ruined"
Could you explain a little more about the quilting paper you used? Can I use tracing paper? I have some lightweight (18lb) Canson sketching paper, will that work okay? Does this technique tend to dull your sewing needle quickly? I love this idea for transferring quilt designs. I think this will really expand my repertoire of designs. Thank you!!
Hi there - video 4 in this series ("Marking and Stencils for Machine Quilting") goes into more detail about the paper. Check the link in the video description for the full playlist. Lynn does say that the quilting paper is basically architectural tracing paper, so if you have something similar it should work just fine. Using one paper template shouldn't dull your needle, but if you're putting together several layers of paper and you're worried about your needle becoming dull more quickly you can always have a separate needle just for sewing paper and change out for a needle just for fabric when you're ready to start sewing.
LandauerPublishing I use a sharpie extra fine point black as shown but it still transferred the ink lightly onto my thread and onto the quilt. Luckily it was very light on the quilt, so I ripped out the stitching and replaced it with clean thread, treated the quilt, washed it and most of it is not noticeable to anyone but me, any suggestions
A regular sewing machine should be all you need - but you will want to use a special foot called a "free motion" foot, sometimes called an "open toe darning foot" or just "darning foot". Your machine may have come with this foot already, and if not you'll be able to order it based on which machine model you have, you'll want to check the machine's manual for more information.
I take the foot completely off the machine, and drop the feed dogs. As long as you're careful, it works great! For machines that are not able to drop the feed dogs, tape a business card over the feed dogs, and you'll be good to go!
What a fabulous video. Very informative, clear and easy to follow. I am only new to quilting and these ideas are a little advanced for me at the moment, but I will store them in my memory for future reference. Thanks for sharing.
Ok. I also will need to turn off upper thread sensor or it keeps telling me there is no thread. In fact I can turn off top & bottom & that should resolve it. Thank you!
Thanks this gets me some great helpful tips to working a design on my project for quilt stitching.
Fascinating! I am a new quilter and paying someone each time to quilt is a financial challenge, this certainly feels doable.
very cool
REALLY GREAT TUTORIAL!! I could even follow it all. Thank you!!
Love this! A great way to practice the movement before you actually quilt.
Wow! Very inspiring.
I never quilted a quilt top before. Can I just use a stencil draw over the quilt and hand quilt it?
I have a question, what if we used the freezer paper and iron it on the quilt and remove it after you quilt it?
Can you use regular paper?
Thank you so much. That was such a great way to learn. You are super quick at sewing.

Please, me too, what kind of paper.
i love that quilt in the background
I have not done tracing method before but like the concept. Thank you for a very good tutorial.
thank you - these were excellant directions!

Where can I find that paper? What is it called?

I know this is extremely old, but could someone tell me if you could use a walking foot and a simple heart shape for this?

Thank you! I have not used quilting paper before and now I have good ideas of how to transfer quilt patterns to my quilt.
Let us know how it goes - it looks like a great technique, and watching Lynn do it here made it look like a breeze.

Can you use freezer paper to trace your design then stich it then iron the freezer paper to your block then sew? instead of pinning?
I've used freezer paper and it was a little tough to tear out. This paper is thinner. Using a smaller stitch helps too.
@@karenwescott2615 hank you :)
just what i was thinking about, but needed the trick of perforating the paper! thank you
Love you video! You explain things so well. I’m a beginner and can’t wait to try your process!

Outstanding video. One of the best I have seen on You Tube and quilting.
It is so much easier to photocopy the design into tracing paper. Sav s loads of time.
I am just curious. The other stencils. Couldn't you just trace the dots? Just wondering.
Really good instruction!

I LOVE THIS CONCEPT, AND I HAVE TONS OF TRACY PAPER
Enemerio Galvan
I WOULD HAVE LOVED TO SEE A LITTLE BIT MORE DETAILS.. LIKE ACTUALLY QUILTING THE QUILTS ON THAT PAPER. THANKS FOR EVERYTHING ELSE
How many stitches per inch? Thank you

My machine will keep stopping without the thread. Where do you put your card?
Well done. Thank you.
Thank you for showing how you do this, it's good to watch rather than be told. love your style, thank you.
would this work using water soluble embroidery stabilizer? This tracing paper is not readily available to me but my mother has plenty of stabilizer that she claims is "ruined"
Could you use pounce to make the perforations show up better?
What is the largest size of paper that can feasibly be used/pinned/sewn? I have a baby quilt that I want to quilt with an overall pantograph.
Hi, I don't speak English, I use a translator. Could you please tell me what the paper used for the templates is called?🙏🙏🙏🙏
Golden Threads Quilting paper - Comes in a roll, three different sizes.
12 inches X 20 yards, 18 inches X 20 yards and 24 inches X 20 yards
What kind of tracing paper
Brilliant!!

Плохо что нет перевода на русский язык,приходится только догадываться о чем речь.
do you use a regular sewing machine or a different one?
if you use a different one then can you please tell me which one

are you free motion sewing?
my machine gives me an error message when I have no bobbin thread in it...
any way around that??
Ellen Hofer Hi Ellen - you still need bobbin thread in your machine when you free motion quilt.
Ok. I also will need to turn off upper thread sensor or it keeps telling me there is no thread. In fact I can turn off top & bottom & that should resolve it. Thank you!
