The only type of Asian restaurants in my city (with 1 exception) that doesn't have a Shen-Yun poster is a Japanese restaurant. My grandmother and aunt do Falungong, intensively. My grandmother got arrested in China then deported, my aunt gave up her career and has worked for epoch time for really low wages for way too long. I went to ShenYun in Toronto (~2017?) with them together just to bond the family when she visited me. I watched the whole shit without sleeping, wrote down childish notes and contributed largely to a burst after few months. There's way too many weird things, it actually surprises me most people going there have no idea what are they gonna see. They do okay hospice service, they bring enough daily exercise to their community; but they refuse medical treatments, and I'm lucky that my parent (or the CCP government) actually protected me. I still suffocate my sanity every time I want to reconciliate with that part of my family.
My family and I were at one of their performances here in Denmark. It starts out normally, with different “traditional” dances from either places or stories in China, but around the end it gets pretty weird. There’s a whole bit about communists kidnapping people and stealing their organs. My (Chinese) mother said the dancing was neither traditionally Chinese, nor as good as she thought it’d be lol (she also didn’t know it was made by a cult before going)

You can actually see a huge Tang-style temple from the compound if you ride the Metro-North Port Jervis Line. For those into fun train rides, I highly recommend riding the Port Jervis Line, you can get some pretty incredible views on the Moodna Viaduct (highest active railroad trestle east of the Mississippi River), there are weekend shuttles to Woodbury Commons (they've been working on regular shuttles to Woodbury Commons as well as shuttles to Legoland New York, Stewart Airport, Storm King, and the Renaissance Fair), and Port Jervis is home to a tri-state monument where NY, NJ, and PA meet. On top of the horrible things that have happened to people at the compound, everything built there goes against local construction and environmental regulations. Expansion plans in 2019 met with opposition from the Delaware Riverkeeper Network and other environmental non-profits and citizens’ groups regarding the wastewater treatment facility and the elimination of local wetlands, impacting local waterways such as the Basher Kill and Neversink River. The town took them to court in 2014 over persistent illegal construction (they have a history of breaking local laws and then paying the associated fines without complaint), and they were sued by residents and NYenvironcom in 2022 for breaking the Clean Water Act and state law for discharging pollutants into the river. The Shen Yun commercials genuinely work, theyre everywhere even on the Spanish channels. Back in 2019 I remember my mom asking me to take her to one of these shows. At a local anime convention last year, there was one artist who made their booth sell posters of a Shrek parody of Shen Yun called "Shrek Yun". It was one of the best parodies I have ever seen, and I think it sums up pretty well what anime fans in my area think about Shen Yun.

Oh man I haven't thought about Shen Yun in a bit. I saw them perform 2 years ago in January of 2023. I had no idea there was any religious element to it until there was some song about atheists going to hell. After the show I remember a Chinese gentleman wanted to interview me, he asked me what I thought about the show. I wonder what they did with that recording.... I saw them interviewing other people too. When I got home, I did some research and found out about Falun Gong. I was kind of disappointed. I went to the show because I knew like nothing about China, and then what I thought was going to be a beautiful educational experience just turned out to be propaganda. Feels bad.

Genuinely thought it was just a dance group who did traditional Chinese dance. The Shen Yun commercials genuinely work, theyre everywhere even on the Spanish channels. Back in 2019 I remember my mom asking me to take her to one of these shows. During the early 2020 pandemonium I started to see Shen Yun memes and the cult stuff. I swear I didn't see that anywhere before. Now everyone makes fun of it but it seems like its aimed at older people.

At a local anime convention last year, there was one artist who made their booth sell posters of a Shrek parody of Shen Yun called "Shrek Yun". It was one of the best parodies I have ever seen, and I think it sums up pretty well what anime fans in my area think about Shen Yun.

Oh man I haven't thought about Shen Yun in a bit. I saw them perform 2 years ago in January of 2023. I had no idea there was any religious element to it until there was some song about atheists going to hell. After the show I remember a Chinese gentleman wanted to interview me, he asked me what I thought about the show. I wonder what they did with that recording.... I saw them interviewing other people too. When I got home, I did some research and found out about Falun Gong. I was kind of disappointed. I went to the show because I knew like nothing about China, and then what I thought was going to be a beautiful educational experience just turned out to be propaganda. Feels bad.

Omg I live in Oregon where it's advertised like crazy. I've alwqys wanted to go and almost bought tickets for it a few years back. Genuinely thought it was just a dance group who did traditional Chinese dance. Had no idea about the cult stuff all i remember their posters and website saying that some performers were escaping persecution in China. Really sucks how misleading this is, and I'm glad i found out about this before going to one of their shows. Still feel disappointed though, and it's gonna be awkward telling my mom about this since I got her interested in going with me if i ever got tickets.
Since 2015 I saw ads in print and tv for the Shen Yun and always wanted to watch it. Went to it last year with the wife to see the dances and cross off my bucket list.
There are the 2 main female and 2 male dancers that you know get a lot of money and special privileges, while the rest are just supporting casts. I thought the strict hours of practices and injuries were due to everything needing to be perfect with all the jumps and dances. Toward the end they explained the word Shen Yun is chinese for "Godly People".
Did not realize some of these things going on. And won't be going back since seen it once and done.
